Esports — a game changer

UGC Events puts Midwest on the emergent industry’s map

EDWARDSVILLE — You might think you understand “gaming” — widely perceived as a video game-playing hobby, either individually, interactively or in teams — but electronic sports, a k a esports, takes “gaming” to a whole new level via competitive video game play, not only for competitors, but for emerging industry leaders involved in all aspects of the esports’ phenomena.

Ultimate Gaming Championship (UGC) Events’ recent Halo Classic awarded a $35,000 prize pool, divided among the participating top eight winning esports teams. And, Madison County got a piece of the pie.

Edwardsville, Illinois-based UGC Events team decided to hold the three-day tournament in Collinsville, Illinois, at the Gateway Center, where UGC held esports

events three times previously.

Ninety teams of four players, out of the 140 teams who purchased Halo Classic tournament’s competition passes, competed throughout the weekend to qualify in the last day’s finale championship, for which the top eight teams, each made up of four players, received the prize pool, distributed equally among the individuals, on the last day of the tournament, held Jan. 11-13.

“We were just blown away from the response,” said Ultimate Gaming Championship (UGC) Events’ Matt Jackson, 32, of DuQuoin, Illinois; Jackson is UGC’s founder, co-owner and chief executive officer. “We sold out of passes for each day, within hours. As we saw the response, we knew the event could be big. Some of the teams who purchased passes didn’t end up playing, due to weather or other individual circumstances, so our final count of For The Edge competitive teams was ninety.”

“At our live events, we can make these events more mainstream,” Jackson explained. “TBS is airing esports and that’s about as mainstream as you can get. ” Today, esports — literally — is changing the game.

“There’s several different perspectives,” Jackson explained. “First, when talking about esports, it almost differentiates esports away from video games.

Stereotypes lump video games and esports together, but just like athletes who want to play baseball, basketball, football; competitors want to play esports. The esports culture has shifted stereotypes from a once seen as a ‘lazy gamer’ to a competitor and professional athlete. Like many other industries, it takes dedication and commitment to make it.”

Most are paid salaries and maintain a healthy lifestyle, of fitness and diet, in efforts to enhance their performance on the digital battleground.

“It’s a job and these guys put the hours into practicing, producing content and interacting with their fans,” Jackson noted. “Second, we’re definitely seeing generational views shift to a different view, and the next generation will have adopted video games and we’ll see new types of people. Those perpetuated stereotypes limit that shift and cause comments such as, ‘Gamers just sit in front of their screens, never go outside and lead unhealthy lives.’ ”That said, you have to compete while maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Watching TV versus playing a video game might seem ‘no different,’ but playing video games is probably more stimulating for your brain.”

Many traditional sports’ professional athletes are now supporting esports by purchasing teams or activating esports at their team’s stadium.

“We are seeing an acceptance of the

future generation and it is setting the tone for esports to scale exponentially in the next five years,” Jackson said. “The growth of UGC esports has been a journey.”

From hosting tournaments in a small Southern Illinois community, UGC Events would add resources, such as Xbox 360s, to ensure each event could scale. In 2009, UGC built an inventory of turn-key esports equipment to facilitate large scale Microsoft Xbox 360 tournaments.

“I continued to host local esports events, while continuing my education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale,” recalled Jackson, who graduated from SIUC in 2010 with a Master of Architecture. “It was important for me to finish and develop a craft that could be applied to my goals. We have since built a team that has developed their craft — it gives UGC an incredible edge as a creative team.”

UGC hosted its first Microsoft-partnered event in 2014, at the Hilton St. Louis Airport, where the event had recordbreaking attendance.

In July of 2016, UGC Events was acquired by Jeff Cooper’s Lineup Media Group located in Edwardsville, Illinois. This new collaboration provided UGC with resources to scale its business development in destination events, including in Las Vegas and Atlantic City, New Jersey, online technology and content creation.

“Lineup Media Group has given us the opportunity to develop, beyond financial resources,” Jackson said. “Jeff has a vision and is open minded to the next wave of business and start-up. This is incredibly beneficial for emerging industries, such as esports. The business development expertise and culture provided by Lineup Media Group is cutting-edge and on the forefront in this area. The future is bright for UGC and other

projects developing within the Edwardsville-based incubator, much to the credit of the executive team.”

Lineup Media Group’s office is located at 103 W. Vandalia St., Edwardsville, to where Jackson regularly commutes from

DuQuoin. Cooper, is a former attorney at Simmons Cooper, now Simmons Hanly Conroy, in Alton, Illinois. Since 2016, UGC Events produced the Vegas and Atlantic City events, partnering with Caesars Entertainment; Microsoft partnered and supported the events on a corporate level. In Vegas, the same venue that hosted “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” hosted UGC Events’ tournament. Both tournaments offered a $200,000 prize pool for UGC’s biggest productions at that time.

“It’s great, because seeing the acceptance from non-endemic esports industry brands, such as Caesars, validates the growth of esports as a sustainable market for competition and entertainment sectors,” Jackson noted. “It gives me chills, to see the growth from 2005 to 2019. We have big brands and companies wanting to work with us now, from where we started in a twenty-five-feet by twenty-five-feet attic space in DuQuoin, Illinois.”

JOBS — MORE EVIDENCE OF ESPORTS BECOMING MAINSTREAM “Esports’ popularity — because of the emergent industry — is because it’s creating graphic artists, video producers, accountants, utilizing all these other existing industries, to help it grow,” said Ultimate Gaming Championship (UGC) Events’ Matt Jackson, UGC’s founder, co-owner and chief executive officer. “As we see the industry develop, we’ll see curriculum grow at schools. There are professional video gamers, sponsored by big brands, getting 200K to 350K a year to play, which is opposite of what we do. We produce intense competitions by professional esports athletes. It’s a legitimate career path, whether a player, competitor, event producer, or all three. Like a professional athlete playing football or basketball, it’s the same work flow.

“There are industry opportunities to work in this space, but you don’t have to be a competitor or a programmer; you can be an event planner, content creator or video editor.”

UGC produces an event, which involves freighting all of its gear, un-boxing and un-crating, to get ready for a tournament; building all of its sets, including the design aspect; lighting diagrams for events’ main stage; and, production and broadcast of entire events, which involves setting up a broadcast schedule and facilitating it both live and online.

“It’s like a TV studio just dropped into the room to capture a live event and display it for the world,” Jackson said.

And, as far as Jackson is concerned, the Midwest is the best.

“It’s a great region for Classic Halo players. It’s what I experienced in ‘05, when

I saw it building then,” he said. “Halo players are the best in the world and they live in Illinois. The Midwest is known to be a breeding ground for Halo.”

He’s particularly fond of the Metro East and building tournaments in the region.

“I love working with Gateway Center, UGC has hosted four events at that location,” Jackson noted. “I’m so happy we can do it there and have UGC bring esports through the St. Louis metropolitan

area. Cities are trying to bring more esports to their venues, and UGC is already established. The fact that we can be on the ground floor, bringing large scale esports events to St. Louis, is a dream.”

UGC Events also immediately upped its tournament security to high alert in response to the tragedy last year at a Madden NFL tournament in Florida.

“There was a series of unfortunate events, where there was a shooting,” Jackson said.

“Because of that, we upgraded our security with metal detectors, bag checkers, so that we are intentionally responding to such an occurrence.”

Food for Thought … with Vicki Bennington Vicki Bennington For The Edge

Cleveland Heath is a nice little restaurant in Edwardsville, with many different facets.

The front room is reminiscent of a diner or café, and the impressive bar is a nice place to sit for casual eating or quick appetizers like I recently had there.

But, the rear portion of the building has the feeling of a fine-dining establishment. No matter what you feel like doing, Cleveland Heath can set the scene for you. If you can get a table, that is.

My husband and I stopped by with friends one Saturday night, and there wasn’t a seat to be had. We were told it could be a long wait.

We tried again on a recent Sunday — early evening — after a movie. We felt like eating something, but didn’t want a full-blown meal because of course, we had popcorn at the movie theater. We turned to the appetizer menu.

Feeling adventurous, we chose a dish called shrimp and grits, with Argentine red shrimp, cheddar grits and chipotle tomato sauce. Our second choice was deviled eggs, described as eggs with Frank’s RedHot sauce, parmesan and paprika. We split both dishes, and were happy with the choices.

The shrimp was especially good.

Other starters on the menu included chicken wings, crispy pork belly, a mushroom fondue and beef tartare.

Kale salad is all the rage now, and Cleveland Heath has a version of its own, topped with garlic, chili flakes, parmesan chips and lemon vinaigrette.

Several sandwich selections are there for the choosing, like pulled pork, turkey or the special Cleveland Heath burger - locally raised, grass-fed beef.

If you are hungry enough and lucky enough to get a table on an evening when you want to go all out for dinner, try some of the gourmet comfort food, like the porterhouse pork chop, steak of the day, seared duck breast or locally raised roasted chicken.

If you’ve saved room, you might try a dessert before you go, like a frosty root beer float or warm brioche beignets with Chantilly cream and chocolate ganache.

Cleveland Heath has been recognized for its brunch, though I haven’t tried it myself — yet. It’s only served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, so you have to plan accordingly.

Another memory I have of Cleveland Heath is from 2014, when it was used as the setting for a movie, and I was an extra — believe it or not. The movie was “Marshall the Miracle Dog,” a movie filmed in and around St. Louis. I was there with a friend, and neither one of us had ever been involved in the filming of a movie before, and simply taking in the sights and sounds was an enlightening experience.

We reported for duty at the crack of dawn at Cleveland Heath, wearing an outfit that we believed adhered to the pre-set guidelines. But, we were instructed to bring along two extra ensembles — just in case we didn’t pass muster — of solid colors, no logos, no white, no black (that made it really difficult for me). I passed with my solid navy blue sundress, but my friend had to make a quick change. She wasn’t quite casual enough for the diner-type atmosphere created for the movie, but luckily, one of her backup dresses fit the bill. In the end we were ready to be filmed — we thought.

We were called for our scene, and as in our roles as patrons just leaving the restaurant,

“Walk softly,” the casting supervisor said.

“Both of you, take off your shoes,” called out director and executive producer Jay Kanzler, a St. Louis native and lawyer.

My head spun around to look at him. I wasn’t quite sure he was serious.

He nodded, and yes, indeed, he meant what he said. We “performed” our 11 or 12 takes, barefooted. It was a little difficult to walk breezily through the scene without shoes (especially when choosing our shoes was a big part of the day’s preparation — and they made us look taller). But we managed to pull it off — we think.

Of course, one of the highlights was meeting Marshall (the “miracle” dog) himself. He walked onto the set without an arrogant bone in his body. You would never know he was a celebrity, as he greeted guests of all ages, genders, shapes and sizes with the same kindness and acceptance as any regular dog on the street might have.

So, I have a unique memory of Cleveland Heath that I will certainly never forget. And, if you haven’t seen the movie, pick up a copy on DVD, or maybe it’s on Netflix. See if you

It’s Oscar season, and nominations are out Movie world waits for Feb. 24 awards

The bulk of this weighty movie hinges on the Shibatas’ adoption of their neighbor’s 5-year-old daughter, Juri (Miyu Sasaki). When Juri is found digging through the garbage for something to eat, she’s invited into the modest home that is the main setting for this feature.

She’s fed and warmed on a cold night and that’s when she’s found to have many burns and bruises, evidence of abuse at the hands of a battered mother.

Taking care of Juri and hiding her location from her family and the authorities becomes a game for the entire Shibata clan. They’re not people who trust institutions or the police on their own. While harboring a missing child, they go to greater lengths to protect the anonymity they’ve crafted via hustling over the years. By the movie’s midpoint, revelations about each character will give every audience member a reason to feel sad, uplifted, betrayed and maybe even a little optimistic. I learned something about family along the way.

“Shoplifters” runs 121 minutes and is rated R for some sexual content and nudity. I give this film three and a half stars out of four.

Now, back to the Oscars.

favorite, but Poland’s entry, “Cold War,” is a strong contender. Its beautiful black-and-white cinematography and directing also were nominated. The trailers for Lebanon’s “Capernaum” and for Germany’s “Never Look Away” (featuring photography by six-time nominee Caleb Deschanel) look amazing. Who hates subtitles? Not this guy!

Other great reveals include “Black Panther” being recognized as a Best Picture candidate.

And how about Melissa McCarthy (one of 12 actors recognized for playing a real person) as a potential Best Actress? I foretold that one to you when I ramped up excitement for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” way back last May. Shorts TV will host its annual presentation of the 15 short film nominees in one week. Look for more on those (I’ve already checked out a few on YouTube like any true obsessive). Join the quest, friends. This is the best month of the year!

Dilemma of having an R. Kelly-penned hit: Sing or sink it?

For Grammy-nominated singer Joe, singing the hit song R. Kelly wrote and produced for him is out of the question.

“I’ve stopped performing the song,” he said in a statement to The Associated Press, referring to “More & More,” a Top 20 R&B song released in 2003.

“No music or intellectual property is worth being inconsiderate to the feelings or pain of others,” 45-year-old Joe continued.

In the wake of multiple sexual abuse allegations against R. Kelly — which intensified this month with the release of the Lifetime documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly” — some performers are denouncing songs the R&B hitmaker created for them.

Sometime ago Jennifer Hudson removed two songs R. Kelly wrote for her from some streaming platforms, including YouTube and Apple Music: the Grammy-nominated “It’s Your World” and “Where You At,” a Top 10 R&B hit. On Thursday, she removed “Where You At” from Spotify but “It’s Your World” was still available.

“I simply cannot, in good faith, continue to perform ‘Sleeping With The One I Love.’” In support of all of the survivors who so bravely came out, the track will no longer be a part of my setlist for all future performances,” the former “American Idol” champion said.

Lady Gaga apologized for her 2013 duet with R. Kelly, “Do What U Want,” and removed the track from streaming services.

Celine Dion followed Gaga’s footsteps, removing her Grammy-nominated duet with the embattled singer, titled “I’m Your Angel,” from streaming platforms.

And B2K, the boy band whose only song to the top the Billboard Hot 100 chart was the R. Kelly-produced “Bump, Bump, Bump,” said after their reunion tour, which kicks off in March, they will no longer perform that song, or the others R. Kelly crafted for them.

“After the tour I am retiring those songs from my set list,” lead singer Omarion tweeted. “I too am raising a future queen.”

R. Kelly, who has denied all allegations of abuse against him, has written and produced his own hits like “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Bump N Grind.” He was once a white-hot hitmaker that most artists clamored to work with. R. Kelly was behind Michael Jackson’s “You Are Not Alone,” which became the first song ever to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when it did in 1995. He also worked on multiple songs for Whitney Houston’s final album, 2009’s “I Look to You.” He produced “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number,” the 1994 debut album for Aaliyah, who was 15 when she married a 27-yearold R. Kelly the same year the album was

released. The marriage was later annulled.

Aaliyah’s album included “Back & Forth,” a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; other Top 10 hits R. Kelly crafted for others included “Stroke You Up” and “G.H.E.T.T.O.U.T.” for R&B duo Changing Faces; “808” for the girl group Blaque; and Maxwell’s “Fortunate,” the crowd favorite he performed at the last stop of his tour in New York in December.

But will he sing it again?

Several artists, through their representatives, didn’t return multiple email requests from the AP asking if they would continue to perform songs R. Kelly wrote for them, including Maxwell.

A rep for Kelly Price, whom R. Kelly has worked with, declined to comment.

R&B singer Syleena Johnson told the AP after looking closely at the lyrics of her debut song, the R. Kelly-penned “I Am Your Woman,” she can no longer perform the track. She said she got goosebumps just thinking about how she sang lyrics like “Now I’ve been dealin’ with you since sweet 16/Woman enough to let you raise me/You used to call me daddy’s ghetto queen” for roughly 20 years.

Toni Braxton is currently on tour but it’s not clear if she’s performing “I Don’t Want To,” a hit song R. Kelly wrote for her multiplatinum sophomore 1996 album, “Secrets.”

R. Kelly signed R&B singer Sparkle and produced her 1998 debut album, which included the hit “Be Careful” (Sparkle alleges Kelly sexually abused a young relative). And he even produced a mild hit for Britney Spears, 2004’s “Outrageous.”

R. Kelly also contributed to the careers of veteran acts like the Isley Brothers and Charlie Wilson, helping the seasoned performers find a home on contemporary radio alongside acts half their age.

Gospel singer Marvin Sapp’s “Listen” was written and produced by R. Kelly and peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot gospel songs chart last year. Though “Listen” was a success, Sapp has become a 11-time Grammy nominee thanks to his No. 1 hits like “Never Would Have Made It,” ‘’The Best In Me” and “My Testimony” as well as “Praise Him In Advance,” a No. 2 hit.

Sapp said in a statement to The Associated Press he is praying for R. Kelly.

He took pains to note that “praying for someone does not equal supporting them and it does not equal defending them.”

“My prayer is that R. Kelly and everyone involved are restored and redeemed — body, mind and spirit.”

Fantasia echoed some of Sapp’s thoughts.

“I’m praying for him and I hope that some things change because I am a mother and it breaks my heart.”

Open vaults: Unpublished Salinger work to be released

Associated Press One of the book world’s greatest mysteries is finally ending: J.D. Salinger’s son says previously unpublished work by his late father will be coming out.

In comments that appeared Friday in The Guardian, Matt Salinger confirmed longstanding reports that the author of “The Catcher in the Rye” had continued to write decades after he stopped publishing books. He said that he and Salinger’s widow, Colleen, are “going as fast as we freaking can” to prepare the material for release.

“He wanted me to pull it together, and because of the scope of the job, he knew it would take a long time,” Salinger said of his father, who died in 2010 and had not published work since the mid-1960s.

Salinger, who helps oversee his father’s literary estate, says any new work might be years away and did not cite any specific titles or plots. He did indicate that the Glass family made famous in such fiction as “Franny and Zooey” would be seen again.

“I feel the pressure to get this done, more than he did,” he said, adding that the unseen work “will definitely disappoint people that he wouldn’t care about, but for real readers . I think it will be tremendously well received by those people and they will be affected in the way every reader hopes to be affected when they open a book. Not changed, necessarily, but something rubs off that can lead to change.”

J.D. Salinger published just four books in his lifetime: “Nine Stories,” ‘’The Catcher in the Rye,” ‘’Franny and Zooey” and a volume with the two novellas “Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction.” The last work to come out in his lifetime was the story “Hapworth 16, 1924,” which appeared in The New Yorker in 1965.

Salinger rarely spoke to the media and not only stopped releasing new work but rejected any reissues or e-book editions of his published material.

This year marks the centennial of his birth and signs of a new openness emerged in 2018 when his estate permitted new covers and a boxed edition of his old fiction to come out for the 100th anniversary.

Diverse female cast to perform women’s rights play The Edge

ST. LOUIS — That Uppity Theatre Company is producing Eve Ensler’s iconic “The Vagina Monologues.”

The event will feature one of the largest and most diverse casts of women seen on stage in St. Louis and will include cisgender, which means denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with their birth sex, transgender, non-binary, a general term relating to people whose sense of personal identity and gender corresponds with neither male or female, African American, Asian American, Latina, white, immigrant, and refugee women, spanning several decades in age. The play explores consensual and nonconsensual sexual experiences, body image, genital mutilation, direct and indirect encounters with reproduction, sex work, love, assault, menstruation, birth and many other topics.

That Uppity Theatre Co.’s Joan Lipkin is the producing artistic director of this production.

This production is part of the international V-Day movement started by Ensler, which this year will run from Feb. 1 through March 8 and encompass more than 1,000 productions around the globe. “The Vagina Monologues” is the cornerstone of the V-Day movement, for which participants stage benefit performances of the show and/or host other related events in their communities.

V-Day is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that distributes funds to national and international grassroots organizations and programs that work to stop violence against girls and women. V-Day’s 2018-2019 Spotlight campaign will focus on women in prisons and jails, detention centers, and formerly incarcerated women.

Ten percent of the proceeds, not only from this production, but from every V-Day production worldwide, will go to Ensler’s Spotlight campaign.

The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m.

“The Vagina Monologues” is an episodic play was once noted as “probably the most important piece of political theater of the last decade,” by Charles Isherwood of the New York Time and was included in the Times ’s list of the most influential American plays since “Angels In America,” last year.

Ensler based the piece on 200 interviews.

Since originally performing the piece in 1996, she has continued to edit and expand the text to include transgender perspectives, writing the monologue “They Beat the Girl Out of My Boy,” after interviewing a group of women whose gender identity differed from their assigned gender identity at birth. Each year, the script released for V-Day is slightly different.

Production is set to begin this summer on eight episodes that the cable channel aims to air later this year, Levine said.

EDWARDSVILLE — The Greater St. Louis Area Council for the Boy Scouts of America hosted its annual University of Scouting event at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Vadalabene Center last week. ‘Jane the Virgin’ creator says finale should bring ‘closure’

The CW show’s creator, Jennie Snyder Urman, said she’s crying in the editing room as she works on the concluding episodes of the show starring Gina Rodriguez.

The producer and actress grew emotional discussing the telenovela-style comedydrama Thursday with TV critics. They were asked how they would look back on “Jane the Virgin.”

“How much representation matters, what it feels like to be seen,” Urman said of the show focused on a Latino family, a rarity on TV. Rodriguez said the audience response affirmed her belief that young girls would be

empowered seeing a Latina character. She’s encouraged to increase her influence through directing and producing, she said.

As for the final episode, Urman said she’s intent on providing “a real sense of closure.”

She said she’s feeling pressure to say goodbye in the right way and wants to “stick the landing.”

The fifth season of “Jane the Virgin,” which begins March 27, has much to resolve. Last season closed with Jane, who’s contemplating marriage to Rafael (Justin Baldoni), learning that her late husband Michael (Brett Dier) may have made a miraculous comeback.

The mystery of Michael’s apparent return will be explored in early episodes of season five, which will conclude this summer. The finale date has yet to be announced.

There may be a spinoff, a telenovela anthology series with Rodriguez and Urman serving as executive producers. CW has ordered a pilot for series consideration, with cast members yet to be announced. Rodriguez will be heard if not seen on it, narrating stories based on fictional novels written by

“Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson announced Wednesday that he is making a new film out of some 55 hours of footage — shot in January 1969 — that has never been seen by the public. The original movie, directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, came out soon after the Beatles broke up in 1970 and has long been viewed as a chronicle of the band members growing apart. Basking in an Oscar nod, Grant recalls ‘Withnail’

Associated Press Richard E. Grant braved a paralyzingly cold night on Thursday to attend a screening of “Withnail & I,” his cultishly adored film debut, in the midst of a whirlwind and much-enjoyed campaign for his Oscar-nominated turn in “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” That it was frigid was fitting. Grant and his co-star, Paul McGann, both playing hopelessly out-of-work actors, spend much of 1987’s “Withnail & I” either freezing, hungry or, most of all, desperate for a drink. “It’s like Greenland in here,” Grant’s Withnail says.

“We’ve got to get some booze.”

If “Withnail” captured the lowest of ebbs for an actor, Grant is, 33 years later, riding the ultimate high. Once again, it’s for playing, as he says, “an alcoholic in a long coat” in a movie about friendship and failure.

Grant is nominated for best supporting actor for his Jack Hock in Marielle Heller’s 1990s New York drama. Hock is an old acquaintance of biographer Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) who, shortly before she turns to forgery, is befriended by Hock in a bar. “This and that,” he summarizes his doings in the lean, intervening years. “Mostly that.”

But much more than it has for his characters, fortune is smiling on Grant. Even on a dark, cold night, he was aglow with a spotlight that has seldom found him.

“People on the street smile at you in a way I’ve never experienced before,” said Grant, with a scarf tucked snuggly around his neck, in an interview before the screening at the Manhattan repertory sanctuary, the Film Forum. “I was walking around SoHo and even in this blistering minus-15 degree cold, I’ve seen very friendly faces looking toward me. Grant, 61, has spent a journeyman, character actor’s career oozing a gentlemanly charm that often only thinly masks an eyepopping mania. In his second, surreal collaboration with “Withnail” director Bruce Greenfield, “How to Get Ahead in Advertising,” he played an ad executive who, in the throes of a nervous breakdown, grows a talking boil.

A kind of revival was kicked off for Grant a few years ago in a recurring role on Lena Dunham’s “Girls” and Richard Shepard’s “Dom Hemingway.” He has a part in the upcoming “Star Wars” movie. But the only award Grant ever recalls being nominated

before was a Razzie (for 1991’s “Hudson Hawk”). So lately, he’s been “floating on a hovercraft of disbelief” — even if he recognizes the sensation is ephemeral.

“You shoot a movie for 26 days and then you’re on a promotional awards trail, as they call it, for five months, and you don’t earn any money doing that. But for me it’s a oncein-a-lifetime thing,” says Grant. “Yet come February 24 when Mahershala wins, it will be gone, cheers, tumbleweed.”

Grant, a natural storyteller and daily diarist, has often turned his exploits as an actor into finely sculpted Hollywood tales. Steve Martin, a friend since they worked together on “L.A. Story,” has called Grant “a screeching mind, a stream-of-conscious faucet spewing sentences — sometimes a mile long.”

Grant has adapted his journals into a few books, including the memoir “With Nails,” in which he suggested “movies operate along the lines of a medieval court, with despots, divas and duckbrains.”

After the screening of “Withnail & I,” Grant regaled the crowd with tales of the dubious financier who bankrolled the film with George Harrison, how he owes much to Daniel Day-Lewis (who turned down the part) and of his alcoholic acting style. Famed as he is for playing drinkers, Grant is a teetotaler, allergic to alcohol. His father was an alcoholic.

Beforehand, Grant attempted to measure the distance from “Withnail & I” to “Can You Ever Forgive?”

“The irony has not escaped me that playing an out-of-work actor has led to almost every job I’ve had since,” he said. “Someone told, ‘Forevermore, you’ll be known as ‘Oscar-nominated Richard E. Grant’ until your last breath.’ At least there’s that.”

And Grant roared with giddy laughter.
