Collaboration brings special brew for Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week

Farmhouse 66 recipe 100% Illinois-grown

By Jill Moon jill.moon@hearst.com EDWARDSVILLE — Friends, collaborators and brewmasters from the city’s Peel and Recess establishments say there’s only camaraderie between their five-member team of Metro East brewers who created a special craft beer for Great Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week, starting Friday, highlighted by a craft beer festival Saturday. Peel Brewing Co.’s Jeffrey Mühlrad and Recess Brewing Co.’s Tracy Hutton share the same passion, joy and challenges of creating special brews day in and day out. They are especially excited to belong to a team of select head brewers, recruited by Alton, Illinois’ Old Bakery Beer Co.’s Lauren Pattan, in partnership with Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau of Southwest Illinois to promote regional craft beer. The team of head brewers also includes Old Bakery Beer Co.’s James Rogalsky; Grafton Winery & Brewhaus’ Jason Wood; and, Collinsville’s Old Herald Brewery & Distillery’s Tor O’Brien. The special brew commemorating Craft Beer Week, through May 17, is collectively named Farmhouse 66, brewed together by the collaborative team at Old Bakery Beer Co., where it was cellared, carbonated, kegged and shipped to a distributor, Mühlrad explained. Each participating brewery received kegs of Farmhouse 66 to serve on tap during Great Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week, held in conjunction with this month’s annual Illinois Craft Beer Week. “Super smooth,” Hutton said of the brewers’ collaboration. “Getting the five breweries together was very easy, we all work really well together,” seconded Mühlrad, who’s based at Peel Brewing Co. in O’Fallon, Illinois, which supplies all three Peel Wood Fired Pizza’s locations, including

If you go What: Rivers & Routes Collaboration Festival When: 1 - 7 p.m., Saturday, May 11 Where: Gordon Moore Park, Alton, Illinois Info: The event is open to the public, for all ages and free to attend. The festival features live music, more than 20 beer styles available for purchase from the participating breweries and food from Edwardsville’s Goshen Meat Market. On stage during the event, The Mindframes will perform from 1 to 2 p.m.; Steel Creek from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; and Big George Jr. and the NGK Band from 5 to 7 p.m. Visit riversandroutes.com/craftbeerweek or Facebook @RiversAndRoutes for more information. O’Fallon and in Clayton, Missouri, a tony business-district enclave of St. Louis County. Edwardsville’s Peel is located at 921 South Arbor Vitae, off of Illinois Route 159. The pair met with The Edge at Edwardsville’s Recess Brewing Co. at 307 N. Main St. to elaborate on Farmhouse 66’s recipe and the team’s process, as well as their own brewing experiences. “Every idea, each brewer said, ‘OK, let’s do it,’” Hutton, 26, of Edwardsville, said.

“From the beginning, we decided to keep it simple, make it a summer beer, easy drinking, and came up with a recipe, all sourced from Illinois.” This first-ever collaboration produced the saison-style beer using 100 percent Illinoisgrown ingredients, including crystal hops from Hallowed Hops, Lewistown; honey from Dow on the Farm, Dow; raw wheat from Cow Creek Farm, Paxton; Belgian-style yeast from Omega Yeast, Chicago; and, Violetta barley grown in Central Illinois and malted by Gateway Custom Malt in Montgomery County, Missouri. “I’m confident it will sell quickly,” Mühlrad, 33, of Brentwood, Missouri, said. “Saison, meaning ‘season,’ originated from Belgian farmers, who had unused harvest at the end of the season, and brewed beer in their farmhouses, which became the ‘house’ beer for their farm workers. We combined that with a shout out to Route 66, and that’s how we came up with the name.” Farmhouse 66 will be available only at the participating breweries this coming week, during which a “Keep the Glass” special is available while supplies last at each brewery. Each brewery has a uniquely designed glass featuring the Farmhouse 66 logo, incidentally designed by Hutton, who also is a freelance artist. Mühlrad, originally from Westchester, New York, the first county north of New York City, landed at Peel Brewing Co. eventually via Chicago. He started home brewing more than 10 years ago. “Just for fun with friends,” Mühlrad recalled.

Julia’s Banquet Center co-owner Julia Kennedy has led the evolution of the venue from its beginning at Alton Square Mall through its recent two-month remodel. Kennedy, along with her husband, Todd Kennedy, own the entire once-prominent Eastgate Plaza, in East Alton, Illinois, and it’s poised to regain its stellar position because of the couple’s leadership. Already opened establishments include Blue Ice Creamery, owned by Madison County residents Kyle and Kelley Shirley; Club Fitness; The Vault: Luxury Warehouse Storage, for cars, boats, RVs and more; Jackpot Gaming Parlor; Elite Hockey Facility, which became the plaza’s first new tenant early last year; Dollar General, which is open and near completion of its new facade facelift; the East Alton Ice Arena; and, AMC Eastgate Showplace 6. Julia’s first opened at Alton Square in 2004, when the Kennedys owned a Golden Corral off of Homer Adams Parkway, in Alton, Illinois, near the mall. They received so many

requests to host banquets at the now-closed Golden Corral that they decided to open a venue for that purpose, with its own entrance, at the mall. In 2012, Julia Kennedy took her namesake banquet center to Eastgate Plaza. “Eastgate is a great location, close to St. Louis and major points and highways in Illinois,” Lane explained about the reason for the move. “The previous owners are in California and the plaza went into disrepair. About 4204 Main Street Brewing Co.

4204 Main Street Brewing opened its doors in May 2014, in Belleville, Illinois, which is the home to many German descendants, and has a proud tradition of brewing. The city had been without a brewery since the 1980s, when Stag closed its doors. 4204 brought the brewing back to Belleville. F o u n d e r a n d C E O To d d K e n n e d y renovated an old restaurant, which had sat empty for years, into a modern brewery and steakhouse. In October 2014, the facilities underwent a renovation to increase production capabilities. In November 2015, 4204 added a canning line. In 2017, 4204 completed a large scale production facility, which includes a twin 30-barrel brew house — one of few in the nation. 4204 Main Street Brewing Co. Banquet Center, Tap Room and Distribution Center is located at 6435 W. Main St., Belleville. Visit mainstreetbrewingco.com or call 618-234-4903 for more information; hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. for Friday and Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

JULIA’S Continued from Page 17 and 400. Its dance floor is of stained concrete; a drop ceiling was removed to create an open-air feeling, plus give easy access to all the venue’s mechanicals, which include a new $36,000 sound/audio visual system, two drop-down screens with ceiling-mounted projections and clustered LED “light clouds”; and, the suite is anchored on either side by a gorgeous full-service bar and an expansive limestone-like textured headwall. “It pays tribute to the bluffs of the Great River Road,” Lane noted. The bar features a quartz countertop and rustic textured porcelain tile, which complements the headwall at the suite’s far opposite end. Julia’s Banquet Center’s bar soon will

A plaque will mark the spot in the room, which also accesses the centrally located bar. The Summers Suite (capacity 80; named for Julia’s grandparents), situated directly off of the center’s main entryway provides ample daylight through large storefront windows with custom-made blinds to replicate the

tiled headwall. Another wall painted a soft eggplant color offsets a crystal chandelier in the elegant room, often used for wedding ceremonies and smaller events, such as special banquets and a recent book launch. The Red Hat Society, the Wood River Woman’s Club and Gideons International meet regularly in the suite. “We have a suite for any occasion,” Lane said. Within the next 40 days, the Kennedys will have Eastgate Plaza’s vast parking lot resurfaced and landscaped. Guests have easy access parking to the banquet center, which is all on one level without stairs or elevators. The entire mall facade also soon will be complete in its renovation and still has prime space available for lease. For lease information, call Julia Kennedy at 618-660-8204 or Todd Kennedy at 618-660-8612.

Thank you, Avengers

‘Endgame’ cast provide pathos, humor, heroism in roles

By Robert D. Grubaugh Contributing columnist “Excelsior!” to borrow the Latin word that Marvel Comics’ Stan Lee (1922 - 2018) made his life motto and catchphrase. Excelsior means “ever upward” and, you see, “Avengers: Endgame,” hotly anticipated upon arrival, caught the world on fire with more than $1 billion in ticket sales (a runaway record). And, when you see 90 percent market share (also a record), you give the people what they want. As the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the culmination of many storylines, “Avengers: Endgame” is a movie for the fans — and even this grumpy critic could get on board with a few of the creative choices that were made to wrap up those storylines in satisfying fashion. Not perfect, but very good for a job that many would have called impossible, even just a year ago. I know a little bit about that because I reviewed each of these movies for you since 2008. To review “Avengers: Endgame,” it can’t really be done without tapping into what has made the Marvel Cinematic Universe great in the first place. You’ve got the comics, sure, but this is a place where I celebrate film, so I’m not going all the way back to the ’60s from the get-go to laud writer-editor Lee and comic book artist Jack Kirby. Here’s where Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige (among others) got it right: they cast actors beautifully — Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Steve Rogers/Captain America), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man), Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Star-Lord) and Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) top this list in “Avengers: Endgame.” These actors in their roles provide pathos, humor and heroism, but they all do it in different, complementary ways and pathos was present in every installment. The characters weren’t afraid to go emotional if loss and grief could be mined to improve a longerlasting story arc. The snark of Iron Man and the pitiful, defensive mugging of Ant-Man or Star-Lord aren’t likely to hold up against the pottymouth of a character like Deadpool, but they have their own place that captures what Silver Age (1956 - circa 1970) comic books were about. And heroes? They’re here by the boatload. Is it Cap’s undying loyalty to Bucky? Or the way Black Panther would rather die for his people than betray his nation? Why would a god of thunder lay it all on the line to defend lowly human beings? It’s what

(Disney/Marvel Studios via AP) Karen Gillan, left, and Don Cheadle in a scene from “Avengers: Endgame.”

(Disney/Marvel Studios via AP) A scene from “Avengers: Endgame.”

heroes do. After Thanos (Josh Brolin) snapped his fingers in “Avengers: Infinity War” and killed

half of the living creatures in existence, we knew that this return bout would have to feature some sort of time travel. So, when you

use the device of time travel in science fiction, you have to be careful to stay in front of the illogical nature of the beast. It won’t ever make sense, so don’t try. Own it and move forward. I was glad that the result was better than the device and I’ll call this style of time travel “altered flashbacks.” In “Avengers: Endgame,” we get to see some more of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Howard Stark (John Slattery) in ways where rewriting history made it even better. It also gave us reason to groan about age-regression makeup on Michael Douglas’s Hank Pym. What I wasn’t prepared for were the impact of characters largely left out of 2018’s “Infinity War,” mainly Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye (whose opening scene is devastating) and Rudd’s Ant-Man, and also a great arc for Nebula (Karen Gillan), an under-used conflicted heroine. You know you have a big cast when Robert Redford’s cameo rates 51st(!) billing. There will be more Marvel Cinematic Universe adventures when “Spider-Man: Far From Home” is in theaters around Independence Day and Marvel Studios’ work is actively on-going for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” “Avengers: Endgame” runs 182 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and some language. I give this film three stars out of four.

very healthy and has a lot of history.” Mühlrad worked in Denver for Renegade Brewing Co., where he got into the restaurant side when it opened an eatery. But, he told the owner that he really wanted to be involved with the brewing side; he made Mühlrad a bartender, who also delivered Renegade’s beer. Then Mühlrad worked for Boulder’s Asher Brewing Co. as the sales manager and cellar person, before returning to Renegade as its lead packaging operator, running its canning line. He moved to Illinois when his now fiancé, Jessica Linder, was accepted to University of Chicago’s Master of Arts pro-

The team of Metro East brewers who helped create a special craft beer, Farmhouse 66, for Great Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week, starting Friday, May 10, are, top row, Tor O’Brien of Collinsville’s Old Herald Brewery & Distillery; James Rogalsky of Alton’s Old Bakery Beer Co.; and Jeff Mühlrad of O’Fallon, Illinois-based Peel Brewing Co., which distributes to Peel Wood Fired Pizza’s three locations: O’Fallon and Edwardsville, in Illinois, and Clayton, Missouri; bottom row, Tracy Hutton of Edwardsville’s Recess Brewing Co.; Jason Wood of Grafton Winery & Brewhaus, in Grafton; and, Peel Brewing Co. shift brewer Brandon Valentine, who helps Mühlrad brew all of Peel’s beers. Great Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week will be highlighted by the Rivers and Routes Collaboration Festival from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois. gram in the Social Sciences. The Windy City is also home to Siebel Institute of Technology, a vocational school specializing in brewing education and services. “I was moving to Chicago, so I decided it was a great opportunity to go to school and take my career to the next level,” he said of Siebel Institute that’s in partnership with Munich, Germany’s Doemens Academy, both of which comprise a dual-campus program called the World Brewing Academy (WBA), split between Chicago and Munich; WBA also offers the industry’s best and most complete web-based training courses to date. “I got my Master Brewer’s certification in Munich in 2017.” Once certified, Mühlrad worked as a brewer for Chicago’s Great Central Brewing Co. for one year before Linder was accepted to a doctorate program in consumer behavior marketing at St. Louis’ Washington University. So, Mühlrad applied for the head brewer position with Peel Brewing Co. “The owners, Brandon Case and Patrick Therion, were doing all the brewing while simultaneously preparing to open their third location in Clayton,” Mühlrad recalled. “They wanted someone to take over the brewing side.” Hutton’s path to leading Recess Brewing’s operations, though more condensed, is equally passionate. Originally from Quincy, Illinois, Hutton came to Edwardsville to attend Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, from where he received a bachelor’s in social work. “It’s a nice degree that I haven’t used,” he noted. “I was a customer at Recess, when it opened in December of 2014, and I became interested in craft beer. I had a friend who was a bartender and I told the owner, Matt Flach, I wanted to get into brewing.” Flach eventually hired Hutton as a bartender in January of 2016. “As I was starting here, I was home-brewing and bugging

Food for Thought …with Vicki Bennington

Batter Up!

Edwardsville’s Mike Shannon’s Grill is one of those iconic-type of establishments that you want to go to — no matter what kind of food is served. The association of former St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman and sports broadcaster Mike Shannon and the Cardinals beckons any baseball or sports fan. Fortunately, the fare is good, too. On a recent Sunday, we decided to stop by to try out the desserts. I’d heard that there were revolving cheesecakes and bread puddings, and both of those sounded good to me. In past visits, once again, I enjoyed the entrée, sandwiches and salads, etc. so much, I never had room for dessert. This time, we made a plan: we’d stop by for the sole purpose of dessert. Pretty smart, right? At first, the waitress brought the regular menu, and was a little surprised when we indicated we were there for dessert only. Oh, and “Could you bring me a coffee?” I asked. BREW Continued from Page 26 Matt,” he recalled. “For six months I was cleaning kegs and jumping into it. Then, the assistant brewer quit and I started helping while still bartending. I really got thrown into it and was the assistant brewer for just under a year.” Meanwhile, Hutton also bartended at Old Bakery Brewing Co.; O’Fallon Brewery, in Maryland Heights, in St. Louis County; and, Craft Beer Cellar, in Clayton. “I’ve been all over the place, getting to know the scene from sales and bartending to

FOOD Continued from Page 27 The seasonal cheesecake of the day was a white chocolate, raspberry swirl cheesecake with a chocolate brownie crust. It scored as our first pick. The second? The carrot cake bread pudding. Both were good, though I probably liked the cheesecake the best, simply because it was a little creamier. The bread pudding was formed in a fluted shape and was quite firm, then topped with whipped cream, instead of a traditional bread pudding-type of glaze. That’s the kind of thing that makes the revolving concoctions unique. Or, you can try the upside down apple pie with cinnamon, walnuts and brown sugar, served a la mode. Of course, there are all kinds of things to try if you aren’t focused only on dessert. There are burgers galore — I am especially partial to the Americana burger that I had on a previous visit, and several steak choices if you want a special night out; but, enough

brewing,” he noted. Fate continued its course, when in the summer of 2017, Flach moved to South Carolina because his wife accepted a new job, and Hutton became Recess’ head brewer. “For the last two years I’ve done it all,” Hutton said about operating the brewery. “All of my brewing experience started at Recess, so it was an easy transition. I do it his way, the way Matt taught me.” Flach still commutes to Recess once a month, helps out and is only a text or telephone call away, Hutton noted. Both Hutton and Mühlrad take their responsibility with the utmost pride, but also humbly. “The beer is yours, you have to make it

Farmhouse 66 will be available only at the participating breweries this coming week, during which a “Keep the Glass” special is available while supplies last at each brewery. Each brewery has a uniquely designed glass featuring on one side of the glass the Farmhouse 66 logo, incidentally designed by Hutton, who also is a freelance artist. On the reverse side of the glass features prominently the name of the brewery from where the glass is purchased. Each respective glass design is available at its issuing brewery.

sandwiches, appetizers and salads are available to let you come out for whatever type of meal you have in mind. I recommend the bruschetta and the crab cakes from the starters menu, and the shrimp po’boy is hard to pass up when you are looking for a good sandwich. Being a salad connoisseur, you have to believe me when I tell you how good the salmon salad is. You can tell I favor seafood, but if you don’t, there are plenty of other choices for whatever category your favorite falls under. Leather booths, big flat-screen TVs and baseball memorabilia, including a “baseball well,” set the sporty tone. There’s even a huge jockey and racehorse in the bar area as a special homage to the sport of horse racing. The bar area has a huge wraparound bar and a really giant TV screen for watching sports; there’s a separate dining room for families or quieter dinners that gives a totally different vibe. The outdoor patio is nice in warm or cool weather, with its central fire pit that we sat around one cool evening last fall, as we sipped on “fancy” coffees. Mike Shannon’s is open every day, and

there’s even a Saturday and Sunday brunch! But, I need to back up a little and go back to our dessert evening. As we pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a space to the right of the door, and I started to point that out to my husband, but he turned into a space to the left. I thought, “Oh, well, it doesn’t matter.” I open my door and as I start to step out, there is a man’s billfold laying on the pavement. I picked it up and started to just carry it straight into the restaurant for them to take care of, but just as we got to the door, for some reason, I said, “Maybe we should see who it belongs to.” We opened it up, and pull out a driver’s license that belonged to an old friend’s father, who does not live in Edwardsville! And neither do we. It was just a coincidence that we happened to pull into that spot. My husband called his friend to tell him what we had found, and they made arrangements to get it back to his dad. I have to say that this kind of thing happens to us fairly often — and maybe it happens to others, as well. You’ll have to let me know some of your stories. We will be in

great,” Mühlrad said. “It’s so incredibly rewarding.” “For me,” Hutton interjected, “it’s so rewarding, because on any given day, all of the people here are drinking the beers I made.” Each gave credit to their co-workers and staff and admitted that brewing craft beer involves daily troubleshooting. “It’s a lot of trial and error,” both said,

almost simultaneously. “I went to school, but every brew is still a great learning experience,” Mühlrad noted. Hutton agreed. “It’s a lot of flying by the seat of your pants. Pumps don’t work, irregular temperatures, a lot of variables,” he explained. At Great Central Brewing Co., where

That’s what brings us all together.” Peel Brewing Co. does employ some automation, but Recess, being a smaller operation, it’s all done by hand. “It’s just like you do at home,” Hutton noted. “We use direct fire, very hands on. I liked drinking craft beer, saw how much there was to it and just fell in love with it.” Great Rivers & Routes Craft Beer Week will kick off with the Rivers & Routes Collaboration Festival from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Gordon Moore Park in Alton. The event is open to the public, for all ages and free to attend. The festival features live music, more than 20 beer styles available for purchase from the participating breweries and food from Edwardsville’s Goshen Meat Market. The women behind 'Booksmart'

By Lindsey Bahr Associated Press

If you've heard anything about the film "Booksmart," you've probably also heard the words "female 'Superbad'." The high school comedy is about two best friends over the course of one epic 24-hour period. And, yes, the friends are women played by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein (incidentally, Jonah Hill's sister). While director Olivia Wilde likes "Superbad" and understands there are similarities, she doesn't love the descriptor. "I do kind of bristle at comparisons that female-led films are granted, as though we can't be our own film," Wilde said. "I can't wait till someone does that to a guy's movie, like this is a guy's 'Booksmart.'" "Booksmart" is the kind of movie that might inspire that kind of change when it opens nationwide on May 24. It's a

generational anthem about two superstudents who on the last night of school decide to break their own rules and attend some parties. It's so of the moment that it might come as a surprise that the script has been around for a decade, originally written by Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins, with revisions a few years later by Susanna Fogel. Eventually, Gloria Sanchez Productions founder Jessica Elbaum got a call about it. Annapurna was looking for a director, and she had an unconventional idea: Wilde, who had never directed a movie. "I said, I know you have no reason to say yes to this, but I'm telling you, Olivia Wilde is going to be an amazing director," Elbaum said. The two had been friends for years and were working on something else together. And even though Wilde had only directed a few music videos, Elbaum had a hunch that

Francois Duhamel/Annapurna Pictures via AP Beanie Feldstein, left, and Kaitlyn Dever in a scene from the film "Booksmart," directed by Olivia Wilde. this was the perfect fit for the actress' feature debut. And with that, Wilde, Elbaum and writer Katie Silberman ("Set It Up") got to work translating the script into something that would be representative of teens in 2019. Silberman had the idea that even the party kids at the school were smart, not just the protagonists Molly (Feldstein) and Amy

(Dever). The film premiered earlier this year to an enthusiastic response at the South by Southwest Film Festival, and they've been showing it at colleges around the country to similarly positive reactions since. Now it's headed for a wide release up against Disney's live-action "Aladdin" and the horror "Brightburn."
