specified The new e-book from EGGER is a quarterly reach out to the world of architecture, design and development. It’s made to inspire, and to help you specify with ease. Specified is about sustainability, product detail, and simple, one-click links to a range of digital tools designed to make your specification journey hassle free. It’s also about EGGER as a brand that is here for the industry. Whether you’re an interior designer, housing developer, architect or fabricator, we see the challenges you face and provide clear cut solutions. Every issue will feature sector specific design concepts, case studies, and value engineering insights. We’ll explore sustainability, inviting industry experts to share their knowledge, and put the spotlight on the features and benefits of our materials. In this first issue, we begin with the exciting hotel sector, and explore the use of matching materials to value engineer projects. Our sustainability focus is on the root of EGGER wood based materials, Forestry, and we explain the opportunities that Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) can bring to specifiers.

From Forest to Furniture Spring has landed Lighter nights are on the horizon. The natural world is coming even more into focus, and not least in specification. Environmental awareness is at the forefront of interior architecture and design. ‘Sustainability’ is everywhere, but what does it really mean for specifiers? One factor is material origin. Knowing where your specified materials come from is fundamental to creating sustainable design concepts. EGGER has put the environment at the heart of its operations since its foundation in 1961. In Specified, we will put sustainability centre stage, exploring and sharing our processes from the raw materials to the final product. In this issue, we start at the beginning of our production journey for wood based materials – in the forest.

We turned to our resident expert Dr Mike Yerbury, Director of Forestry at EGGER UK, to tell us more

Hi Mike, thanks for joining us. We know Forestry is at the forefront of all EGGER wood-based material production. How can we ensure specifiers that we operate with an environmental conscience from the outset?

»

At EGGER Forestry, our focus is on sourcing legal and sustainable supplies of wood. To do this, we work closely with growers of standing trees which we harvest, and sellers of roundwood which others have harvested. We establish solid relationships with the forest owning land owner, our contracting resources for felling, extraction and transportation, and with our customers. These relationships allow us to contribute positively to controls on tree

removal from sustainably managed forests, and to safe and efficient working practices when bringing the wood to market.

03 03

continued... A key focus of these relationships is to ensure the forest is managed with respect for the environment, the wildlife and the people who live and work in it. How exactly do we do this? We work closely with landowners and forest managers to ensure that forest cover is sustained into perpetuity. This involves adherence to legal requirements and meeting strict environmental standards in relation to multiple benefits such as improving biodiversity, habitat, water quality, landscape, amenity, and recreation. We also support the economic aspect of forest ownership through the provision of a sustainable and robust wood processing sector, which utilises large quantities of sustainably managed forests each year. Our production plant in Northumberland takes in large quantities of wood. Specifiers ask us how we ensure volume is regenerated while still meeting our annual requirements? EGGER (UK) secures close to 800,000 tonnes of virgin wood fibre per year from sustainably managed forests. This is supplied by EGGER Forestry and other external suppliers. All channels of supply adhere to the same environmental, social and economic standards, so we are able to provide that assurance to our customers. We carry out detailed due diligence to ensure that legal requirements for felling trees and associated sustainability standards have been maintained, and record this within our wood procurement systems. For all of the virgin fibre sourced, the forest owner carries a legal obligation to ensure the areas felled are replanted. This gives us the confidence that the forest resource will be regenerated for the future. A proportion of the wood we source goes to sawmills. How do we ensure the environment is at the heart of this process too? Within EGGER Forestry, we demonstrate our commitment to environmental sustainability through all of our site based operations. These are managed in a way that ensures compliance with our own ISO Management system, which includes ISO 14001. After we deliver the sawlogs to the mills, they reduce these to sawn timber sections which are then sold into the construction, pallet and fencing markets. Side cuts removed from each log are further processed into chips, which are then sold to EGGER, along with sawdust from

04

the sawing process, for us to utilise in our chipboard production process. Nothing is wasted. Maintaining an element of control on this supply chain provides us with the assurance that the environmental footprint is minimised. When a design project requires environmental certification, how do we provide specifiers with complete transparency of our Forestry processes? All of the wood material used in our wood-based panel production is sourced according to legal requirements and sustainability standards, and we rigorously ensure that there is clear traceability to this. We are then able to pass this onto our customers via certification and chain of custody documentation which we share.

Many of the chipboard panels we produce from our sustainably sourced wood materials are further processed into Melamine Faced Chipboard, more commonly known as MFC.

Eurodekor MFC U960 ST9 Onyx Grey

A material applicable to a huge volume of interior design solutions, that is cost effective, increases efficiency, and positively impacts the environment. The benefits of MFC are many. And it doesn’t stop there. Does your project have a reduced carbon or net zero target? MFC, produced via our sustainable and energy efficient processes, has a negative carbon footprint of -13.3kg C02/m2*.

Eurodekor MFC F812 ST9 White Levanto Marble

As a material applicable to large proportions of the interior, that can go a long way towards carbon reduction in a project over all.

What is MFC?

MFC combines our high quality chipboard core with a decorative outer layer formed from melamine impregnated decor paper,

As a finished product, the durability of MFC means applications fabricated in the material have a long life cycle, but specifiers can be confident that when removal is required, MFC materials can go into a wood recycling system in their entirety. EGGER then sources recycled wood content, including MFC, to put back into chipboard production. This means that MFC is an environmentally conscious material choice that contributes to the circular economy.

Still unsure where to specify MFC?

In residential settings, MFC is applicable for kitchen cabinets and frontals, shelving, wardrobes, beds, headboards, desks and tables, door frames, and fitted and standalone

interior applications. Less sustainable and more costly natural materials, such as granite, marble or timber, are frequently specified on the premise of increased durability – but this is not always the case.

H1377 ST36

How durable is it? MFC is a robust and resilient material, both at its strong chipboard core and at its outer surface. Melamine, in the outer surfaces of the board, is a hard wearing compound. Among its properties are scratch and stain resistance, stability, and colourfastness.

In public commercial settings, choose MFC for lower traffic vertical and horizontal surfaces.

» Specifier’s Handbook Technical data, Environmental Product Declarations and more

Where genuine materials such as wood veneer, or natural stones treated with resins, can be vulnerable to discolouration in sunlight, melamine based surfaces remain as consistent in colour over time as they are on install.

How environmentally sustainable is it? MFC is 100% recyclable, as well as carbon negative. It is made from 80% recycled materials and by-products, and 20% sustainably sourced fresh resource.

What exactly is Value Engineering? Eurodekor MFC H1387 ST10 Graphite Denver Oak

With rising inflation heightening strain on project budgets, it’s a term we can expect to hear increasingly in the market.

Laminate H3170 ST12 Natural Kendal Oak

What does it actually mean? Selecting materials that optimise the cost efficiency of a design, while maintaining design integrity. Making intelligent switches from more costly materials to cutting edge reproductions, that positively impact the budget. Streamlining the fabrication process, reducing labour time and costs through the use of matching materials from a sole supplier. This is where EGGER’s advanced production technology,

sizes come in, to offer specifiers a complete package in value engineering. However, value engineering is not ‘one size fits’ all, so EGGER will work with you to identify the individual needs of a project and offer tailored solutions. In this issue, we look at matching materials and how to cut project costs, with the effective use of two matching material types in particular - laminate and MFC.

Knowing the advantages and limitations of material types will streamline the specification process. Laminate sheet requires bonding, a balancer, and a suitable substrate. All incur a cost. However, the added overlay increases resilience for areas facing more wear, making laminate ideal for restaurant table tops, reception desks, bar tops, and doors.

Check in at The Ro Inspired by the booming hotel sector, we head to Bowness on Windermere, to check out the recently refurbished luxury hotel, The Ro. Created by Mixology North ’21 award winning APM Design, The Ro offers 87 tranquil guestrooms and a stunning bar and restaurant. EGGER’s White Mountain Larch has been chosen for case goods in the guestrooms. Part of the Feelwood collection, the decor has a synchronised pore surface, creating woodgrain characteristics that are almost undetectable from solid timber.

H3403 ST38

APM Design’s Project Director Dean McCluskey told us why the decor has been specified. The Ro interiors throughout have been designed to reflect the tranquillity of their natural park setting. White Mountain Larch is the perfect choice to create a contemporary yet soft look in the bedrooms, where guests can feel at ease.” Adding to this natural theme, thicker boards have been used for case goods. Fabricated in EGGER Melamaine Faced Chipboard, the 38 mm thick format has been used for all panels where out-facing edges are a feature, enhancing the realistic decor in creating the illusion of a solid timber piece. Matching ABS edging in a 43 mm format adds a neat finish to the furniture.

Board thicknesses Eurodekor MFC, in every EGGER Decorative Collection finish, is available from stock in a standard 18 mm board thickness, and made to order in thicknesses from 8 mm - 38 mm.

Dean told us The materials are excellent quality as expected by EGGER. APM have worked with EGGER for years and consider their fantastic range of products one of our go to favourites.” Reducing project costs, furniture frontals have been fabricated in 18 mm Melamine Faced Chipboard, in the perfectly matching H3403 ST38 finish. By selecting EGGER reproduction materials as an alternative to timber, the specification also means design consistency. Uniform panel production ensures consistency across all 87 guestrooms. Asked about support during the specification journey, Dean said APM have always found the service from EGGER to be to a really high standard. The team at EGGER are extremely passionate and knowledgeable about their range of products which acts as a great sounding board for ensuring product suitability.” Feelwood H3403 ST38 White Mountain Larch, in mixed matching materials, has been used for wardrobes, desks, headboards, bedside tables and complementing mirror and picture frames.
