WELCOME TO OLIVER 40 fantastic things to do in the Wine Capital of Canada

S

age covered mountainsides rise up from a majestic valley floor, a crystal clear river winding its way peacefully across beautiful green agricultural land that has been wrested from the desert through hard work and perseverance. This is Oliver. A community nestled in the beautiful South Okanagan, Oliver can proudly call itself the Wine Capital of Canada, with vineyards dotting the landscape and providing the necessary ingredients to produce some of the finest vintages in all of Canada in our local wineries, which are spread throughout the area. The crown jewel of our wine industry is the Golden Mile, a stretch of world class wineries that have helped Oliver to gain its well deserved reputation as the number one Canadian destination for those with a taste for the grape. Yet Oliver has so much more Yet Oliver has so to offer potential visitors than simply wines. much more to The town, and the surrounding offer potential areas, which include some of the country’s most productive and visitors than beautiful orchards, is a place that simply wines can be enjoyed by everyone, of all ages, and passions. This tourism destination began from very humble beginnings. The area was first brought to outside attention by a one-armed prospector who discovered the mineral riches of the region in the mid 1800s. The first

claim was staked in 1887 and gold finds led to the development of Fairview, one of BC’s biggest towns at the turn of the century. The Town was established in 1890 on the mountainous benches above Oliver to the west. Fairview’s life was short, with the post office closing in 1926. But Fairview’s demise was just the beginning for Oliver, with BC premier John Oliver’s vision for the future about to change life in the valley forever. Due to his concern for veterans returning from World War I, he created the South Okanagan Lands Project (SOLP), which brought engineers and workers from all over Canada to construct a massive irrigation system capable of servicing 20,000 acres. In two years, construction of a diversion dam, 20 miles of concrete ditches, flumes and woodstove siphons had been completed. Veterans had first choice on purchasing the newly irrigated land, but their general lack of interest soon led to the land being opened to others. This opened the door for the Oliver that we know today. As the locals refer to it, it’s the Valley Of Heaven In The Okanagan (Oliver’s postal code is VOH 1TO). Today, Oliver is a hotbed for the arts, from painting to fabric arts and everything in between. It is also a showcase for athleticism, in particular that most challenging of sports, the triathalon. A half-dozen events scattered throughout the season push competitors of all skill levels to their limit and provide an amazing sight for spectators. And that great engineering feat started by the town’s namesake has helped to open up the area to some of the most spectacular sightseeing in the country. Cherry, apricot, peach, plum, apple and pear orchards complement the vineyards. The geography of the South Okanagan is unique. Many types of recreation suit the natural features and the fabulous climate. Lakes are plentiful and rivers carve the landscape. Oliver boasts high-country, valley floor, productive terraces, and desert vistas. There are far too many things for potential tourists to do in our community, but this booklet endeavours to cover as many as possible as it brings you 40 Things to do in Oliver.
