April 12-18, 2018 Having Issues Last week I mentioned that there would be no issue published next week due to my surgery on Friday. I am hoping to change that plan. I need a week off at the start of May to prepare my place for final peritoneal dialysis set up and delivery of my personal equipment. So there will be an issue next week, April 19 and there will be no issue during the week of May 8. And basically, you the readers are my bosses so it is important that I give you an idea of what is happening. Enjoy this issue.

Repair Café We are constantly inundated with advertising convincing us to buy new things. Today’s society is all about spending money and upgrading. But there are always other options. There is a new program in town. The Columbia Valley Makerspace Society is a group that wants to help people learn to repair their broken items rather than discarding and purchasing new. We all have favourite items that are broken and wish that we could afford to have repaired. As it turns out, sometimes it is a very simple fix that we are capable of doing ourselves. This Saturday, April 15, bring your broken item to the Invermere Legion between 1 pm and 6 pm and they will help you take a look at it and fix it. This is a free event and includes free coffee and treats.

FINAL TRIVIA NIGHT WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11 THE STATION
It doesn’t matter how many people are involved, working together is the best way to get things accomplished. We have a lot of things to get through every day in our lives and some tasks are quite overwhelming. Whether at home, at work, on a sports team, as a government or pretty much anywhere. Many people get into a competitive mode and want to do things on their own believing that they will look better to others. We plug away, working through difficulties and maybe getting everything accomplished. But the happier, more successful people will quickly look around them and realize that there is always a better way. Having more people involved provides more resources, more ideas, more energy and more success. Working together feels good and sharing the credit and kudos for an accomplishment feels even better. Encouraging each other and knowing everyone is doing their best will propagate better performances and a better overall experience. If only the whole world would work together as a team instead of trying to better each other. Remember that it all begins with us as individuals. You can make a change.

I am really loving the weather these days. With the snow gone in Castlegar, our walks have really expanded beyond staying on the streets that have been plowed. That was a tough winter for active dogs and their owners. Now we are finding all kinds of new places out there. It is fantastic to find all the strange new scents, sights and sounds. Rob is taking me to lots of great spots. One thing to remember this time of year is ticks. It is the start of tick season. We have been doing lots of walks in the bush and around hiking trails which really exposes us to ticks. With my short legs I am dragging along the ground a bit so I am an easy target. The beauty of this is that Rob really checks me over well when we get home from a walk. I mean he is always very touchy and loving but after a walk these days I get a 100% full body rub down. I love it. I hope all you dog owners are doing the same thing. Rest assured that your pets love being loved and a good rubdown for ticks qualifies as true love.

This is a pretty exciting week for me. It seems like my kidneys are not showing any sign of recovery despite my 4 months of chemotherapy. They say about half the kidneys come back in this situation but I am not in that half. So far anyways. So we go ahead with the peritoneal dialysis (PD) this Friday the 13th. My team meeting went great with lots of support and things are moving forward. I will be similar to the ‘Bionic Man’ except my parts are just plastic tubes inserted into my chest and abdomen. Once the PD tube is inserted, it will be a few weeks for it to heal in place before I can use it for full time dialysis. It will require 4 fluid exchanges every day but will eliminate all the trips to the hospitals. It will be life changing for me as it gets me back to Invermere. It will help me achieve independence again. I have to admit that I am excited and nervous at the same time. Living a normal lifestyle with no kidney function will be a challenge but I really need to get back to fishing, golfing and socializing with the wonderful folks of the Columbia Valley.

Side Effects So everyone experiences a different journey in this world. Chemotherapy can kick the butt out of many folks but for others, it may not be too bad. Some folks are quite sickly, some are not. I am not. When we cross paths, you will note that I look pretty similar to how I have always looked. I have lost some weight. That is quite noticeable but I had lost lots prior to getting sick. My hair loss has been minimal. Almost at the same pace as it’s already happening. I am not feeling nauseous all the time. Maybe occasionally but nothing too crazy. Mostly I am just very sluggish with my body and my brain. Chemo is really sucking the energy out of me. It is tough to do anything physical and it is tough keeping the brain going. Keeping The Valley Peak going has actually been a lot tougher than I thought it would be. A bit easier than this. The letters, cards and emails I received really made a huge difference in that for me.

Beef Bet I was in the butcher’s this week and I bet him $50 he couldn’t reach the meat on the top shelf. He said “no, those steaks are too high.”
What is Kombucha? I’ve been seeing this word around town, at Valley Foods and elsewhere. What is “Kombucha”? It’s available “on tap” at Valley Foods, so is it a new word for beer? Turns out, kombucha is fermented tea. Made properly, the plain stuff tastes like carbonated iced tea with a gentle kick, and commercial brewers usually add fruits, herbs or roots for extra flavour (and health benefits). There are four flavours of Fernie Alpine Kombucha available at Valley Foods in Invermere. It’s a fermented drink, which means it can make your digestive system happy. Spring is a great time to try something new and start new, healthier habits: pick up some kombucha and see what you think.

So with the multiple myeloma bone cancer and the chemotherapy, it is very tough to track what is going on. I get a lot of blood drawn from me for testing. At this point, the main indicators are showing some recession of the cancer cells. The ‘bad’ proteins in my blood stream are reducing pretty good plus I am generating some new hemoglobin and red blood cells. Basically, it is all I can hope for. Knock this cancer back in its tracks and carry on. It has been a long journey so far and I still have 5 months of chemo left but I am confident that it will not get any worse than it was in the early stages. I am appreciating all the support from the world around me. It is incredible feeling cared for the way that the Columbia Valley has cared for me. Thanks.

So Many Scams Be careful out there folks. There are so many different scams going on. Lots of people want to take your money and they have many different ways to do it. Some come to your door, others call you and even more try to get you through your computer. Do not respond to emails from financial institutions. Do not send money to cover taxes and shipping for your ‘inheritance’. Do not transfer money to help your ‘relative’ in a distant country. And many more… I had an email from a bank saying my card was compromised. Too bad it was a bank that I don’t even have an account with. Go to www.peopleslawschool.ca for an idea of all the scams that are currently around British Columbia.

One super exciting live auction item is two SilverLeaf tickets on the Rocky Mountaineer rail line. Should be a great night, in support of a great cause.
A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca

Sprinter We have had a pretty crazy spring so far this year. There are a lot of folks waiting to golf, fish and other non-winter activities and it seems like a long wait this year. We are experiencing ‘sprinter’, a spring season that is filled with winter. Hang in there folks. Be patient. It will be a fantastic summer.

Worrying has proven to be an effective form of prevention. Most of the things that I worry about actually never happen. Local Beef Konig Meat & Sausage Company in downtown Invermere has amazing products. From fresh meat for the grill to a variety of in-house sausages, European specialties and daily lunch specials, they have lots of great stuff. They are now also selling locally grown, hormone and antibiotic free Wagyu/Angus beef from the J2 Ranch. Halves and quarters are available. Call 250-342-9661 for information.

Happy Birthday Mom I want to wish my Mom, Edie, a happy birthday this Friday, April 13. She will be turning 87 years old. Mom has been working very hard trying to help me with my health issues. She is a wonderful cook and has done a lot of research on what I can eat with my kidney issues. She will be spending her birthday at the Trail hospital as I have surgery that days and will need her for recovery and transportation. Thanks Mom/ I love you.

tall, some are bent over, some are green, some are brown or grey. They are all different and we walk through the forest and just let them be, often admiring them all. But when we are around humans, our attitude changes. We can’t look at anyone and just let them be or accept them. We instantly come up with things they should change to make them more ‘acceptable’ in our views. It is bad. Treat the people like the trees folks. Just accept every one of them.
Where is Your Ad? And how much is it costing you? I can pretty much guarantee it is costing more than an ad in The Valley Peak. And I can also assure you that it is not as effective as an ad in The Valley Peak. For less than $25/week, more than a 1,000 people will see your ad. Find out more by emailing rob@valleypeak.ca.

Roller-skating Record Attempt If you’ve always nurtured a secret passion to rollerskate in a 200-person conga line, here’s your chance. The folks at the Greenways Trail Alliance want to break the Guinness World Record for longest conga line, and they thought they might as well do it on roller skates on the paved Westside Legacy Trail. The event takes place Saturday, June 16, but you can reserve your skates now by emailing lianne.lang@greenways.ca -- and you get to keep the skates afterward! Sizes for age 5+ are available, with 250 pairs of skates up for grabs. I’m thinking of setting up a lawn chair just to watch.
Tree Talk I saw an interesting comparison on how we treat each other. The gentleman referred to walking through the forest and looking at all these different types of trees. Some are
