April 18-24, 2019 Miraculous Scheduling It’s a miracle: community events are planned for the Easter weekend all down the valley, and yet it’s possible (if you really, really like hunting for chocolate eggs) to attend all of them. High fives to the organizers who coordinated this weekend without any scheduling conflicts. It was probably a happy coincidence, but it’s one we’re trying to encourage with the Upcoming Events page at www.valleypeak.ca. Well-planned events mean more people can show up.
Happy Easter My buddy asked what my plans are for the Easter weekend. “Same as Jesus,” I replied. “Taking off Friday and coming back on Monday.”
Adult Easter Egg Hunt Yes, adults can hunt for eggs this Easter too, thanks to Hopkins Harvest and its annual fundraiser for Invermere’s Global Animal Lovers Society. The licensed event takes place on Friday, April 19. The hunt begins at 5 pm, when folks ages 19+ are invited to search for eggs that get you goodies from local businesses.

Easter Church Services The Lake Windermere Alliance Church is a place that I enjoy hanging out. Lots of love there and it helps me see the benefits of love and kindness. They are holding a ‘Sonrise’ devotional service, combined with the Christian Valley Assembly on Easter Sunday at 7:30 am at Kinsmen Beach. It is a very non-intimidating venue for a service and you (everyone) are invited. They will also have their usual 10:30 am service at the Church. You are always welcome there also.
Hunt, Hop & Shop in Invermere Downtown Invermere businesses are all set to welcome kids and their families for an Easter Egg Shop, Hop and Hunt on Saturday, April 20. Hunt around town for eggs, while stopping at participating stores for deals and treats. There are a lot of businesses participating. The event runs from 11 am to 1 pm, or until all the chocolate is gone.

Edgewater Breakfast & Hunt It’s a pancake breakfast and Easter egg hunt at the Edgewater Community Hall on Sunday, April 21. Start your day with flapjacks between 8:30 and 11 am: breakfast costs a very reasonable $6. The free egg hunt starts at 9 am for kids ages 12 and younger. Adults can enter to win an Easter basket, and everyone can guess how many jellybeans are in the jar. Cheers to the Edgewater Legion for hosting this for the community.

It is Easter this weekend and that brings a lot of things to the valley. Valley visitors are a great addition, as is chocolate. Many folks entertain different traditions, from hiding eggs to family meals to attending Church services. Easter is a Christian-based holiday, representing the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. But many folks really couldn’t care less about the Christian part. For them it is family and fun time. I think the important thing is to just let everyone enjoy it however they like. It is not for any of us to judge the beliefs or disbeliefs of others. Accepting people for who they are is a good, positive attitude that should be shared by everyone. So don’t worry about what other folks are up to this weekend. Enjoy in the way that you feel comfortable. My weekends are basically putting together The Valley Peak but I hope to get a good meal or two and some time fishing to help me enjoy Easter. And I will likely attend the Kinsmen Beach combined Christian ‘Sonrise’ devotional service at 7:30 am on Sunday. Have a great Easter folks.

Great Meals Remember the Friday night dinners at the Invermere Legion. Every week they put on a great spread at 6:30 pm. This week’s dinner is ham and scalloped potatoes. I believe next week’s will be a steak sandwich. Fridays also bring the 50/50 and meat draws. It is always fun and filling when you are supporting the Legion on a Friday night.

Watson’s Waddle Life has really changed around here in the last couple of years. Being Rob’s hound dog was an amazing experience as we were out walking often and we did many drives into the back country so I could explore. He worked as a Fire Warden back then so we saw a lot of beautiful sights. Now it seems like a quick walk and then he is on his machine for several hours. Thank heavens for Jen and others who stop in and get me out during these sessions. I love to be outside. Apparently I also love to rest. I am getting a bit older so I really enjoy my naps. I enjoy my second and third naps even more although I am quick to get up and at it if I see or hear any action around the place. I do not want to miss anything. I love where we live as many dogs walk their humans on our street. I get to meet a lot of dogs every week. I even have a few favourites. I hope to see you out there somewhere this week. Happy Easter.

As most of you know I am well into kidney complete failure. And it sucks but oh well, make the best of it. As it turns out there are a few others in the valley with kidney issues. Some are in the early stages but it eventually creeps up on you. Just a reminder to keep track of your body. Has something changed in your urination patterns? Are you drinking more or less water than usual? Do you feel fatigued often, especially muscle fatigue (like climbing a hill)? Are you feeling itchy all over your body? Go talk to your doctor. Let them know what is happening. If you are feeling all those symptoms then demand some bloodwork. Diabetes often leads to kidney failure so keep track of that. Watch how much sugar you consume and try to limit that (sugar is a big part of cancer as well). I can promise you that you do not want to be in kidney failure. It is not a very fun lifestyle. No matter how positive you stay, it still sucks. Really.

Kidney failure sucks. Believe me. Stop by one morning and I will show you about 6 hours of medical stuff that I go through just to be able to walk out the door. Every second day at least. How can you make a difference? Well there are currently 37 million extra kidneys in Canada and you likely have one of them. How far are you willing to go to help out a complete stranger. To change their life? Ask your doctor about screening to be a kidney donor. Find out the risks versus the rewards. Cheers.

Awesome for kids of all ages!
I have a couple things to write about here this week. The first one is with my kidney failure I seem to continue to lose weight. I am almost down to the weight that I should be but illness is not a good system for weight loss. My body seems to be rejecting fluids so I pee a lot. I am a rare case who has to add saline to my blood to keep it flowing. Another thing going on is more related to the bone marrow cancer. I get these crazy bone pains on occasion. This week I had one in my elbow and it was so painful that I could not bend it at all. It is weird how it builds over a few days, reaches a peak and them subsides in a day or two. And it is always in different places on the body. I am not sure what actually causes it but I sure know when it is happening. And I am grateful when it clears up. It is painfully crazy how it happens. Overall I have been feeling pretty good since home hemodialysis has been happening.

So this week I go for cancer bloodwork and next week I have an appointment with the doctor in Cranbrook who represents my Kelowna oncologist. Anyone who has ever had cancer knows how scary of a prospect that can be. I have been feeling pretty good with the home hemodialysis but that is not an indicator of the multiple myeloma. It can be quite misleading. I have stuck with my alternative program, vitamin D, omega 3, alpha-lipoic acid, lemon water, turmeric and cannabis oil. I have been consuming a quarter-gram of the oil daily. It is amazing what a healing product that is. I am sleeping better, most of my body aches and pains are gone and I have a good appetite. I would recommend it for everyone on a daily basis. There are no negative side effects, no matter what you may have learned many years ago. Anyways, thanks to everyone who supports me. I cannot list all of you so I will not even try. This is an amazing valley.

So apparently Loblaws is struggling a bit lately. At least compared to the average Canadian citizen. They only profited more than $800 million off the backs of Canadians last year. That is just not enough so our government has handed them $12 million more of our money to ‘fight climate change’ or line their pockets. What a sad joke that is. Of course Loblaws was a large contributor to the current party in charge during their campaign. Lots of small businesses are struggling to survive and get nothing from our government. We have a very unfair, immoral, corrupt system for our government. I say a solution would be independent candidates elected in every riding. Elect someone who actually knows what it is like to be an average Canadian.

NOTICE of
Watermain Flushing
The municipality will be flushing its community water system for 6 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. During this period, disinfection by chlorination will be continued. To assist the Public Works Department during the flushing operation, users are advised that if they are experiencing persistent discoloration or odour problems with the water, to immediately notify the Municipal Office and explain the nature of the problem. The District apologizes for any inconveniences caused by this operation. For further information, please telephone the municipal office at 250-342-9281.

Help Wanted Both AG Valley Foods and Fairmont Pizza & Ice Cream Parlour are looking to staff up for the busy season. They are both great places to work with friendly staff and a pleasant environment. If you are out there looking for work, check them out.
Where I Was This is a great time of year. The ice is coming off most of our valley lakes and the fish will be hungry. The photo on page 6 shows one of those beautiful places.
A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca
The Thrifty Reporter Spring is hopping. Easter is right around the corner, do you need Easter decorations or supplies? Now would be a good time to visit the Invermere Thrift Store. I have been away for a few weeks and after I returned to the valley I took a trip to my favorite store. With Spring and Easter right around the corner those brightly colored decorations just jumped out at me and were saying... take me home. So I did! Wishing everybody an Easter filled with love, peace and the joy of spring.

Great Garage Sale
Great Rental Venue
The Fairmont Lions Club is holding their spring garage sale next Saturday, April 27. They have been gathering items for some time now. Visit the Lion’s Den on Hot Springs Road next Saturday and find some treasures.
The curling season is over in Invermere which opens up an amazing venue for social gatherings. The upstairs lounge can hold up to 120 people for meetings, weddings , conferences and more. It is very affordable and offers a fully licensed bar, billiards, shuffleboard, foosball and darts. The ice surface area can also be booked for larger events. It can hold up to 600 people (now that’s a party). Both areas can be decorated quite elegantly. Call 250-3423315 for more information.
Long Weekend Road Report It’s the Easter long weekend, with no school for the kiddos on Friday, April 19 or Monday, April 22. This means more kids around town, on their bikes and crossing streets, so please watch out and slow down when driving, not just in school zones. Our roads and parking spaces are about to get busier and busier as the warmer season approaches. Let’s all stay calm, embrace Valley time and practice patience to keep everyone safe and smiling.
420
So this Saturday, April 20, 2019 is the first ‘legal’ version of 420. 420 is a slang code term for smoking cannabis. For many years there have been celebrations at 4:20 pm on April 20. More and more healing properties of CBD and THC are being discovered/released every day. Many people suffer because of their fear of trying it. Thanks to many years of negative propaganda.
Dark Pun Last week the power went out in my house. I re-fused to put it back on.
Search Fore Food I like food. I think that is very apparent by reading The Valley Peak or by looking at how big I am right now. Now that nice weather is upon us, several restaurants open up that many folks don’t even consider checking out. Golf courses all offer food services and most of the courses in the valley have tremendous food. So if you are thinking about heading out for a meal, consider visiting a golf course. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Small Change You may notice that page 8 has changed this week. With the large influx of advertisers for the Easter weekend I had to fill it up. It was kind of nice having the ad page in for a couple months; a bit less writing. Anyways, if you are considering The Valley Peak for advertising this year, it might be time to get in here. It is going to fill up fast and I definitely will not be expanding.

Our Journeys I am on quite the journey with my health. It is very difficult, but you know what? It is no more difficult than anyone else’s journey. At some point in our lives, many times actually, we all face the most difficult thing we have ever faced. Remember that. Everyone is facing something, often many things. Be kind.
