August 10—16, 2017 Enjoy the Miracle Okay, it is here! Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen is this Thursday, August 10, all day! All proceeds from all Blizzards will be donated to the nearest Children’s Hospital (Calgary in our case). The Children’s Hospitals are a critical part of our health system and have done some fantastic things for some of our local youth in times of health trouble. So have a Blizzard for breakfast, have a couple with co-workers for lunch and finish off the day with one for dinner haha. It’s all for a really good cause.

Grease This week’s free Movie in the Mountains will be ‘Grease’. I remember when it came out in 1978 as I was a teenager. I (and all my buddies) developed a heavy crush on Olivia Newton-John. It is a fantastic musical about good girl Sandy falling in love with greaser Danny (John Travolta). It is cute, funny and romantic. Bring blankets and chairs, bug juice and weather-appropriate clothing. There will be snacks available at the cash concession. The movie will begin at dusk on Monday, August 14. Have fun.

Pretty Perseids The Perseids meteor shower is peaking this weekend. This Friday night (August 11) and Saturday night we can expect to see a lot of shooting stars. Some will be very bright with long glowing tails. It is incredible. This is always the biggest and brightest meteor shower of the year and when you see it happening you get a pretty good feeling of the size of the universe. Meteor showers are actually pieces of dust and residue that are hitting the Earth’s atmosphere and burning up. They are very predictable because the dust cloud is in the path of the Earth’s orbit every year. Look up and be amazed.

MIRACLE TREAT DAY THURSDAY, AUGUST 10 DAIRY QUEEN

August 12 & 13, 2017

One part of human nature that we all share is self-doubt. We all know our own imperfections and prefer to not share them. It is crazy how we can be incredible at a job, sport or whatever, and have folks compliment us all day, every day, and we still ‘know’ we can be a bit better. And then that one person has a problem or complaint about you or your service. Your nearly-perfect world collapses around you. One criticism will erase every compliment you have ever received. It can feel pretty bad. So remember that when you are on the other side of things. It is so easy to find something to complain about amongst hundreds of things to commend. Yet so many of us will choose to complain. We have to change that. Be the person that you want others to be. Should you give your teammate/kid/coworker heck? Or should you give them help? Be supportive and positive. Make people feel good about who they are and you will feel better about who you are.

August 10

Statistics A recent poll showed that 1 in 4 people would be willing to donate a kidney to a total stranger. I find this very doubtful as it seems that 90% of people won’t let a stranger merge in traffic.

Roast Beef Dinner This Friday, August 11, the evening dinner at the Invermere Legion will be roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, potatoes and more. Dinner always includes dessert and a coffee or tea. The meals begin at 6:30 pm every Friday. Enjoy 50/50 and meat draws while you are enjoying a fine meal.

Watson’s Waddle I am not sure about other dogs, but I sure have a lot of very realistic dreams. Most of them are pretty awesome with fields to run, treats to eat, other dogs to sniff and more. The interesting part for Rob is watching me as I dream. I can make a lot of noise and go through a lot of body motions. I actually bark in my sleep. It is a bit muffled but it is still barking. It seems normal as I do bark a fair amount in my waking times. I also chase a lot of things in my sleep. My legs will be moving rapidly on the bed as I am dreaming of badgers, squirrels, rabbits and gophers. I love chasing small animals. Rob often wonders how I can sleep so much but it turns out that sometimes I get a lot of exercise while I am asleep. It is exhausting haha. Be good to your pets out there folks.

LADIES NIGHT

Bugging Out

WEDNESDAY, 6-9 PM

The wildfires across the province, including in our area, are a good reminder how life can change very quickly for all of us. A disaster can strike anytime. Are you ready? I am kind of half-ready. I have a bin of essentials, water put aside, some dog food, a mattress in the vehicle and a procedure thought out in advance. I am actually debating filling my fishing boat with essentials and then quickly hooking up to it. I can bug out to a lake and well, I might as well fish while I am there. Anyways, it is a good thing to think about a bit and be prepared for the worst. You never know what can happen.

6. The Senate

Go For a Dip I have to remind myself and therefore I will remind you. We live in a great place with some beautiful lakes. Swimming lakes, from the convenience of Windermere Lake to the serenity of some of the hidden mountain lakes. Make sure you take the time to go for the occasional dip in a lake. It is good for you, physically, emotionally and spiritually. It just feels so good, refreshing and cooling. I want to note that my ‘crocs’ are buoyant so it makes it easy to just lie on my back and float. I love that.

For dog control issues within the municipality, please contact our Dog Control Officer at 250-342-1707. As we now know, plastic is not so fantastic. Up to a trillion plastic bags per year are used around the world. While most of them go to landfill sites where, scientists estimate, takes up to 1,000 years to break down, millions still end up in waterways, trees, and in our oceans where it eventually ends up in stomachs of fish and birds. We encourage you to use biodegradable dog waste bags, which are available at various sites throughout town.

A GREAT EVENING SUPPORTING A GREAT CAUSE!

That seems to be a big part of what it is all about. Parenting involves spending time with your kids. Spending time having fun together, spending time doing chores together, attending events together, reading, watching television, etc. Eating dinner together is a great time to explore each other’s happenings for the day and plans for tomorrow. Preparing dinner together is good bonding time. Pretty much any time you spend with your kids is time that they learn about you and from you. It is much easier communicating with your kids when you are used to being around them. Rules and boundaries are simple when communication is open.

Tips from the Pro How do I get rid of the chipping yips? Those short chip shots can be difficult sometimes. Fluffing it or hitting the ground first can be very frustrating. Get back to the basics; move the ball farther back in your stance, move your hands forward, and lean your weight on your front foot. Let the club do the work instead of trying to hit or lift the ball. The trick to making sure you avoid deceleration is to lightly squeeze your hands at impact, it will help you make better contact and accelerate into the ball. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows an owl on one of the back roads that I drive. It has been an incredible season for me as I have seen about a dozen owls. Last week I watched a hawk take a gopher. Nature in this valley is awesome.

Blessings It is very easy to forget how lucky I am in so many ways. When a couple things start to go wrong it is easy to feel sorry for myself and blame the world. But when I sit back and reflect on all the favours that people do for me and all the breaks I have had in life, things seem much better. We all have many blessings in our daily lives. We just don’t always see them in front of us. Thanks to everyone who is out there helping others and making the world a bit better place to live.

The sign said ‘In Case of Fire, Do Not use the Elevator’. That made sense to me because if there is a fire, I will probably use water.

Nice Clear Change The last couple of nights have been very beautiful. The smoke has cleared up a bit and I can actually see a few stars. The moon is a bit of a cream colour. I have to admit that it was pretty cool seeing the bright orange sun and dark orange moons over the past few weeks.

Beach Party Next Thursday, August 17 brings another great beach party to Kinsmen Beach from 5 pm to 8 pm. This one will feature Columbia River Paddle with kayaking and standup paddle boarding. It will be lots of fun and a great chance for folks to give SUPing a try. Everyone is welcome.

Classic Rock We all have that era of music that we grew up with and hope to hear whenever we are out socially. For me, being born in the sixties, I grew up with rock and roll. The house that I am now renting is setup so that my stereo is in my office area giving me a chance to listen to a lot more music. I am working through boxes of CDs. Today has been ‘Rush’ and their first album. They are a great Canadian band with some classic songs. ‘Working Man’ has always been one of my favourite songs. Add some music to your life.

never buzz by our ears as that is one of the main ways they are detected. I wonder how many times in my life I have slapped myself on the side of the head trying to ‘kill a buzz’. Mosquitoes do seem to know where mammals will hang out. You definitely will find more in a huckleberry patch than you do in the valleys without berries. Sometimes you give up a half cup of blood to get a cup of berries.

Plagiarism They say that copying out of a single book or reference is plagiarism while copying out of several books is research. My question is, ‘What is it called if you are copying your own work?” Sometimes, if there is an annual event coming up, I will take content from an article of the previous year. It is still interesting and relevant for the readers but a bit easier for the writer. Enjoy.

There are many places that I visit that have their beauty tarnished by things left behind by people. Trash and beverage containers can be found anywhere. The Movies at Pothole Park are fantastic events but there is sure a lot of litter after the show. Parents, please set positive examples and clean up everywhere that you visit, camping, at the beach, at the park….. And don’t be afraid to remind your kids and teenagers to leave every place a bit nicer than when you arrived.

Fresh is Fantastic I love this time of year when fruit and vegetables are ripening nicely. Our bodies love fresh produce and so do my taste buds. Vibrant colours, rich in vitamins, great taste; it’s all good. A good healthy lifestyle includes healthy eating so take advantage of this time of year to eat a lot of fresh produce. If you have abundance, share it with friends or store it for the off seasons. Be healthy.
