Dream On “I’ve often wanted to drown all my sorrows,” said the long-suffering husband. “But I can’t convince my wife to come swimming.”

Who Stole that Church Anyway? One of the famous historical landmarks in the valley is St. Peter’s Church in Windermere, known far and wide as the Stolen Church. Its history goes back to the 1880s ghost town of Donald, northwest of Golden. The church simply vanished! Who stole it? How did they do it? What was the motive? If you want to find out, come to a musical

mystery theatre production at 2:00 pm on Sunday, August 21 at St. Peter’s Churchlocated on Victoria Avenue in Windermere, about two blocks west of the community hall. The tale is full of romance, mystery, colourful East Kootenay historical characters, and original music in the rollicking style of the gold rush days.

Lorne Rowe Memorial Golf The 8th Annual Lorne Rowe Memorial Golf Tournament is on Monday, August 22 at Mountainside Golf Course in Fairmont. All proceeds will be contributed to the Canadian Diabetes Association. It is a great tournament with a Texas Scramble format and shotgun start at 10 am. Your $119 entry fee includes breakfast, golf with power cart, on-course food & beverage sampling station, dinner and prizes (50% chance of prizes). That is a great package. It will be fun, you don’t have to be a great golfer and this is a charity event for diabetes. Call 250-345-6514 for entry information (ad page 2).

Be grateful and gracious, not jealous. Life brings us all kinds of twists and turns every day. It is quite the journey and we all hope to find joy and happiness. But our brains seem to get in the way of our happiness. We are given so much in our lives but we are constantly comparing ourselves to others around us. We often find ourselves a bit jealous when our friends or associates succeed. But we know that feeling jealous will never make us happy. It is our own choice on how to feel about things but we have to learn to control that. Try mindfully feeling happy for the success of others. Use it as inspiration that we can all succeed in this world. It will improve your days on an individual or a business level. For a business, if your neighbour is serving a lot of clients, then the odds are that some will spill over to you. The more successful businesses that we have, the more clients we have to share and the more successful businesses we have. It is a positive circle that we can all share. So be gracious and happy when you see someone other than yourself doing well. The positive attitude will improve your life.

Watson’s Waddle It seems that I am very photogenic. And Rob isn’t. Everywhere we go and nearly everyone we meet, I have to pose for photos. At first it seemed kind of awkward for me. I wasn’t sure what was happening. But I noticed that Matilda seemed to love it. She would tilt her head to the side, all cute like, and everyone would be happy and give her some scritches. I caught on to that deal pretty quick. Pose a bit, get some neck rubs and maybe a few treats. It’s a pretty good gig. Trudi loves taking photos and I love the sound of her voice as she encourages me to ‘smile’. When Tilley and I are together, it is really exciting. Everyone smiles and says hello and tells us how cute we are. No matter where we go. I want to thank all of the dog lovers out there. There are a lot of us dogs who need to be loved.

Sweet Campground Trudi and I camped at Larchwood Lake for a few days last week and it was a great experience. It was switched over this year to a hosted campground with a new $14 daily fee. It has made a huge difference. No trailers parked all summer in the best spots, traffic (including bikes and atvs) travel slowly and respectfully through the area, the washrooms are well-maintained and clean, the campsites and fire pits are in incredible condition and more. Basically, it is just a beautiful, peaceful place to camp. The lake itself is great for swimming and the odd fisherman gets lucky on occasion.

Food for Thought I had always thought that ‘bringing home the bacon’ referred to providing income for your family but no. For hundreds of years a pig was the prize of choice at country fairs because pigs were the only meat that many families ever ate. Bowling for a pig or catching a greased pig were popular rural pastimes on feast days or other holidays. In both cases the winner was rewarded with a pig to take home and ‘bringing home the bacon’ became a popular term for winning a prize or succeeding in some form of contest.

Dogs provide undying love and devotion. He felt loved like never before.

Multi-Tasking I was relaxing on the couch, watching the Olympics, listening to a ball game, eating a snack and scratching the dog with my foot when my wife came in and had the nerve to accuse me of doing nothing.

Canadiana Terry Fox touched the world with his attempt to cross Canada running on a prosthetic leg. His goal was to raise one dollar for every Canadian, 24 million at the time, to put towards cancer research. He ran the equivalent of a marathon each day, on barren highways under all weather conditions. At the Halfway point, near Thunder Bay, Ontario, Fox’s cancer spread to his lungs and he died nine months later. Before his death, he raised well over his goal and in the years since, more than $400 million has been raised with his legacy, the Terry Fox Run.

Fresh is Fantastic I love this time of year when fruit and vegetables are ripening nicely. Our bodies love fresh produce and so do my taste buds. Vibrant colours, rich in vitamins, great taste; it’s all good. A good healthy lifestyle includes healthy eating so take advantage of this time of year to eat a lot of fresh produce. If you have abundance, share it with friends or store it for the off seasons. Be healthy.

Brain Blanks This is one of those filler articles for when I really can’t come up with something to write. There are many things that I noticed but didn’t make a note of this week. I am trying to remember some of those now.

One Million

Welcome

That is a pretty big number. When the Back Door Wine Cellar first opened the door in 1994, Dave and Rene probably didn’t even consider a million bottles of wine. But here we are, in 2016, and they have reached the million bottle milestone. Congratulations. And thanks to everyone who has and continues to support them.

How can you tell when the bees have completed building a new hive? They have a house swarming party.

Depression Everyone has issues. Some are much bigger and tougher than others but that doesn’t matter. What matters is how you deal with them. Drugs and alcohol seem to help for a bit but in the long run they are quite the hindrance. They say that when we are overwhelmed that we should just assess what is happening and then take the first right step. Most of the rest of the steps in the journey will follow automatically. If you are finding yourself totally overcome with depression, please remember that there is help out there. People who do care. Go to www.sucideprevention.ca or call 403 -327-7905.

Renovations The house had such a tiny kitchen that the contractor thought putting in an island would be counter-productive.

Summer Olympics For us, the Olympics is a pretty emotional adventure as we hope the athletes from our country do well. Imagine what it is like for the athletes themselves. It must be pretty daunting knowing that your whole country is counting on you for the next few moments. ‘The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’. A great job by our athletes so far.

Grounding Season This is a great time of year to stay in touch with the Earth. She wants to share some free electrons with you, but you have to come into direct contact with her. So walk barefoot on the grass, the beach or in the water. Go for a swim, lie in a field, dig in your garden. Just touch the Earth as much as you can and you will feel better for it.

It’s What I Do Being pretty much the sole writer for The Valley Peak, readers are pretty much stuck with my outlooks and opinions of things. Some folks enjoy it, some enjoy parts of it and others probably just shake their heads. That’s all part of everyone having their own opinion, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, I can only write about what I know and I can only get out to so many events. That is why you read so much about curling in the winter, fishing in the spring and camping (plus fire safety) at this time of year. But generally I am open to ideas and submissions as long as they are short and positive, so feel free to offer something up.
