RADIUM CENTRE GRAND OPENING SATURDAY, AUG. 25, 2 PM

I see a lot of information about what people think the perfect partner should be and all the wonderful things they should do for you every day. I find the lists quite amusing as it seems that a lot of people feel they are entitled to a pretty amazing situation. It would take a lot to be that partner. What most folks don’t think about is their own part in all of that. It would be great to have someone do all these things for you but what are you willing to do in return? How perfect of a partner are you? Are you reading that list as a list of expectations or a list of duties? The catch of the whole thing is life is about who you are, not what you expect from others. What is the best way to meet incredible people? It is simple. Be an incredible person. Be that person who can see the wants and needs of others and goes out and fills those voids. Be that person who smiles and says a kind word to everyone. Be that person who supports everyone in their dreams. Be that person who listens and understands. Be that perfect partner yourself before you have any expectations of anyone else being perfect for you.

Garbage not getting picked up? Here are some of the most common reasons why: Garbage must be put out by 8 a.m. Garbage bags must be put in standard containers and not exceed 25 kg per individual container. All garbage must be in plastic bags and not loose in the bin. If standard containers are kept in an enclosed structure- remove them on morning of garbage pick up. Tags for attaching to garbage containers in excess of 3 per residential premises per week can be purchased through the District of Invermere office for the sum of $1 each. These extra bags must also be put in standard containers.

CRESTEEL RV SERVICE

We have been out on an adventure for a couple of weeks. It is one of the best things about being a dog: any time you get in the vehicle, you don’t really know where you will be when you get out. But you do know it will be great, wherever it is. We stayed at a nice orchard in Coldstream for a week. It is a few acres that are fully fenced in so I had a lot of territory to explore. Rob and his Mom made sure I got out and around that place. It was nice. And then we suddenly ended up back at Mom’s place in Castlegar. We lived there for several months this year so it was very familiar territory for me. It was nice to visit some of the walks from those days and to visit with all the folks in her strata. And now back in Invermere with lots of rest stops on the way. I have already seen some familiar tails and faces. It is good to be home. But I can’t wait to get back in that vehicle and see where it takes me. The anticipation is half the fun. It is a great life when you can look forward to everything.

Yes that is me. Still lost in the abyss of acute kidney failure. My recent surgery to replace my peritoneal dialysis tube has put me back on hemodialysis for a few weeks. That means back and forth to the hospitals 3 times a week. It has been interesting visiting the dialysis units in different cities through this. I had dialysis twice In Kelowna, once in Vernon, back in Trail and now it will be Cranbrook again. I have met many nurses, doctors and patients on this latest leg of my journey. It has been quite the eye-opener to see how many people live with serious health issues every day, even just within the scope of kidneys. It will be a couple more weeks before I know if this surgery was a success. I am really hoping it is so I can live a bit more of a normal lifestyle, doing my dialysis overnight with an automatic machine. Thanks to all the folks who have been offering support and encouragement along the way.

Life Changes Funny how things that were punishments as a kid are goals as an adult. I now love going to bed early, not leaving my house and not going to the parties.

Refreshing Rain This was a great Monday morning. I woke up to the sweet sound of rain on the roof without the usual sound of thunder accompanying it. It only rained for an hour or so but it really cleared the air up nicely for the morning. It was so refreshing to walk outside, see some mountains and not taste charcoal with every breath. Hopefully it slowed down some of the fires. I don’t see a lot more rain in the forecast but the temperatures are a touch cooler.

My Progress Only one more month of chemotherapy for me. At least with this current protocol. Five more hits in the ninth and last cycle. That is exciting as the countdown is on. The last hit is almost at the one-year mark from when my kidneys failed. It has been a long year of just learning how to live with a lot of stuff wrong with my body. I am hoping to find out next week what kind of progress has been made on my cancer. They are still pretty vague but I imagine it is time for a bunch of tests. My body is so exhausted from the chemo and the kidney stuff that it is hard to tell how I am feeling at any given moment. Any time I feel a new ache or pain I have to wonder if it is related to bone marrow cancer. Is it bone pain? It is almost comical. Look after yourselves folks.

WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED TIRES ON RIMS.

Learning They say that a good education is important in this world. But I say no way. Just look at Albert Einstein. He dropped out of school and was still the first person to walk on the moon.

Falling Fruit There’s now a hotline to call if you have a tough time keeping up with the ripening apples on your tree this season, thanks to the Groundswell Network Society. Their Apple Rescue Pilot Program sends volunteers to pick the fruit before it goes to waste, or attracts wildlife to your neighbourhood. Properties of seniors and seasonal homeowners are the priority. Call Katrina at 342-3337 and get that juicy bear bait out of your yard. The group is also looking for volunteers to tackle more yards. You can join the group on Facebook by searching for “Columbia Valley Fruit Exchange.”

The Thrifty Reporter Busy, busy, busy. The summer days are so busy with all the activities and events on the calendar. It is really nice to have a quiet day. There are many quiet activities for yourself or your family to do. How about a board game or a puzzle? Maybe a book to read or a coloring book for the children? How about creating a craft for the whole family to do? There are so many possibilities and the Invermere Thrift Store is a good place to check for these items.

Major Prayers

ROCKIES HOCKEY FERNIE MONDAY REVELSTOKE TUESDAY

Throughout my illness, many of the folks at my Church have said many prayers for me. That has been incredible. Many other friends and family from across Canada and beyond have also prayed. I received an incredible phone call this week from a lady in Calgary who receives The Valley Peak from a friend. She reads it to many people and 100 of them are gathering at exactly 9 am on Monday to pray specifically for my health. That was a very powerful phone call and reminds me of the strength we all have in our hearts that we can share with others.

Side Effects Nothing new happening here. I had a week off chemo for my dialysis surgery so that was nice. When I got back onto it I did have a bout of nausea. I have been fortunate to avoid that mostly through all of this. Chemo affects everyone differently as there are so many different protocols. One thing is for sure, it really sucks the energy out of all of us. And constant fatigue sucks. I like to believe that my body will recover some of its oomph when all of this is done.

The photo on page 6 could be from thousands of places in our province right now. It is a reminder of the total campfire ban in our area and in British Columbia.

Fresh Food One of the highlights of my trip was staying on my sister’s orchard for a week. It was peach season and corn season so I was able to eat my share of two things that I love. Apparently corn is a bit on the high side for potassium. That is good for everyone with kidneys, but not me. Anyways, eat fresh and healthy. It is pretty easy this time of year as more and more fruit and vegetables are coming to harvest.

Defined My new thesaurus is terrible. It is also terrible.

Neighbourly Do you get along with your neighbours? I certainly hope so. It is nice to be able to walk through your neighbourhood and feel welcome, Not everyone thinks the same way, but it is nice to get along regardless. I had a next door neighbor in the city who made a point of visiting everyone on the block each week. He was always there to lend a hand with any project, or just to bring some cheer. He rarely used the phone and didn’t have a computer, saying that his ‘social network’ was right there on his street. I think it is important to know and get along with your neighbours, even if it is just so you know someone is keeping an eye on your place when you are away.

Invermere Farmers Market The summer is soon coming to a close which will bring the end of the Invermere Farmers and Artisans Market. There are only a couple of weeks left of this amazing event. Every Saturday, from 9 am to 1 pm, several fantastic vendors set up in downtown Invermere. There are so many things to check out that it is impossible to list them. One thing is for sure, you will see many friendly, smiling faces as people delight in what they are seeing. You should be one of them.

New Drivers Give them a break folks. Learning to drive can be a tricky thing, different for all of us. Learners go a year before the road test and they are learning to follow the speed limit, come to a complete stop, and more. It is really nerve-wracking for a new (or any) driver to have someone tail-gaiting, honking their horn and even giving ‘the finger’. It is quite pathetic really. Imagine your first-ever left turn across a highway and having that going on behind you. Learning anything is tough and when it involves something that puts lives at risk, such as driving, taking a cautious approach is best. So please back off folks. Tail-gating anyone is a poor choice and putting pressure on a new driver is not a good thing.

leads to disappointments and stress. No disagreement is worth the anguish that it can cause. And don’t ever be afraid to apologize. It is crazy how many people would rather lose a friendship by not saying anything rather than a simple “I’m sorry.”

Everyone is Right From their own perspective that is. Not everyone thinks the same way that I do (or that you do). It makes the world kind of special really. A good thing to try to remember is that in everyone’s own mind, they are correct. Even if they are thinking differently than I am. So a good technique in disagreements is to actually listen to the other person’s perspective and try to gain something from it. You might actually find a common thread of reasoning that will help you understand their perspective. Anyway, don’t take life too seriously; it just

Fractured Thoughts How often do you check your cell phone for texts? Or your email? Society is in a strange spot right now. These things are like ‘Brain Candy’ to us. They fracture our thoughts so we are not focused on any one thing. We get the false feeling of productivity but actually perform very poorly on most tasks. We all believe we are great multitaskers. Studies are showing that workers whose cell phones are removed are much more productive and successful with their tasks. Try putting your phone away for a while. Live the real life that is right in front of you.

Growing Older I used to love to take my kid to the playground to play on the swings. Now he says he is too old for that. It is too bad because now I have to go by myself. Thanks for reading The Valley Peak.
