BURGERS FOR MS THURSDAY, AUGUST 24 A&W
Are you a good person? That is a pretty open-ended question with many different aspects to it. Do you do what you know is the right thing every chance you get? Or maybe you are a fairly good person who occasionally does the right thing? Or you could be that person who just doesn’t think that it matters and don’t really care about what is right. I think many of us move from one category to another on any given day, depending on how we are feeling. A bad mood can be shared pretty quickly. This is something that we should try to be mindful of. There are so many chances to do good things out there. And it feels very good to do them. If you see someone in a bit of distress, ask what you can do to help. If you know someone down and out, take them a meal or two. Buy someone a coffee. Help someone move. Mow your neighbour’s lawn. Visit a senior (many are very, very lonely). Call your parents. Whatever you want to do to add some positive energy to the world is greatly appreciated. Be the reason that people believe there is good in this world.

Watson’s Waddle This week’s column is to be read out loud to all the dogs out there. Hey hounds, it’s Watson here. I hope you are all doing well. This is just a reminder to you that many humans (possibly your human) are very busy and others are tired or maybe even lazy. They forget or just don’t feel like going for a walk. But it is important that they do. It is unhealthy for them to just sit around after work until bedtime. They need to be walked on a regular basis and it is up to you to remind them. It is for their own good to help prevent diabetes, obesity and more. You may have to stand near the door and whimper, or go get your leash and bring it to them. For me, I like to put my chin on Rob’s knee and if that doesn’t work I will get my front paws up on his lap and look him in the eye. It might seem like work at times, but that is why we have humans. They need love, companionship and exercise to be happy and healthy and they count on us to help them meet their needs. Love your human.

Living alone, I don’t mind an unmade bed. It is still pretty warm and comfy to crawl into at the end of the day. But I saw an inspirational video that says differently. It showed how making your bed is a 5 minute task that will start your day with a feeling of accomplishment. That will in turn inspire you to accomplish another task, and another. It makes sense to me. He finished with the fact that even if you have a slow or lousy day, you will feel better when you see your nicely made bed.

Some good reasons to go low-flow: Toilets account for about one-third of the water used in an average home. Older toilets use 13-20 litres of water per flush—30,000 more litres per year than a 6.0 litre/flush toilet.
The new 6.0 litre toilets have been reengineered to perform better.

So Much Hype It is 11:30 am on Monday, August 21 as I am writing this note. The time of the maximum solar eclipse in our area. As with many things, Facebook has told me to be prepared for the most amazing solar event of my lifetime. ‘Darkness during the day’. I must say that it was not nearly as exciting as anticipated. We reached 77% coverage so things got a bit darker but I certainly did not need to get a flashlight. Things are now getting back to full brightness. Some cultures believe that the Sun represents life and darkness represents death. For them, the solar eclipse is a chance for a new beginning.

There are a bunch of wildfire crews stationed in Invermere right now. They are camped here to help battle the White River and Island Pond fires. They live a crazy, hard lifestyle. The first half eat breakfast at 6 am and then head out to their work sites. The next group is at 7 am. Thanks to the restaurants feeding them. They spend many hours battling the fires before returning for dinner at 7 pm or 8 pm, depending on the crew. Thanks again for feeding them. They get back to camp to shower in waves (a lot of people sharing a few showers) before retiring to their tents for the night. They have very little energy left for socializing. Thanks to the community for being so supportive to these crews. The girls who brought baked goods for treats for everyone (I had to ‘guard’ that pretty closely) were very thoughtful and very wellreceived. Thanks to these crews that are doing their best to keep us out of harm’s way in this crazy fire season.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 could be from many places in British Columbia this summer. It is a couple firefighters mopping up on the Island Pond Fire south of Canal Flats. I am amazed that there are still folks out there having campfires. Invermere Fire & Rescue was called out to one on the weekend. Some people think that because it is a bit cooler, especially at night, that it is okay. But things are still tinder-dry out there and the risk of wildfire is still extreme. Be careful and be smart folks.

I have to admit that I am very happy with my current living space. It is a nice old farm house that is located between some great neighbours. I have beautiful gardens on both sides of me and the owners are great at sharing. It reminds me of growing up in an awesome community where my folks got along with everyone. Be nice to your neighbour. It makes life much easier. Really, we should be nice to everyone. That would make for a great life.
The Amazing Watson I have to admit that I have been very blessed to have Watson the hound in my life. He is incredible. At the Fire Camp, nearly every fire fighter would take the time to give him a rub. They noted that he was very soothing for them. People of all ages everywhere seem to love him. He is great for pet therapy visits at Columbia House and he loves visiting ‘The Gardens’. He blesses many people every day but mostly, he blesses me. It is amazing how much love I am feeling for an animal and how much love Watson gives back tome.
A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca

Everyone is Right From their own perspective that is. Not everyone thinks the same way that I do (or that you do). It makes the world kind of special really. A good thing to try to remember is that in everyone’s own mind, they are correct. Even if they‘re thinking differently than me. So a good technique in disagreements is to actually listen to the other person’s perspective and try to gain something from it. You might actually find a common thread of reasoning that will help you understand their perspective. Anyway, don’t take life too seriously; it just leads to disappointments and stress. No disagreement is worth the anguish that it can cause. And don’t ever be afraid to apologize. It is crazy how many people would rather lose a friendship by not saying anything rather than a simple “I’m sorry.”

Making Hay One of the things I love about the drive south of here is watching the progress of the hay fields through the year and the work involved in growing and harvesting it. Lately I have seen lots of cutting and baling. It is so visually pleasing to watch the baler picking up the hay and dropping a huge round bale after a few moments.
Watching the transport and stacking of the bales is pretty interesting as well. There is a lot of hay in those piles. I really appreciate the effort that the farmers put in to their lifestyles.

Slippery What is a foot long and quite slippery? A slipper.
Little Chilly I did some overnight security at the Fire Camp on the weekend. There are about 60 fire fighters stationed in town for the wildfires. I was very surprised at how chilly it is getting at nights now. I actually had to wear a ski jacket during the night. It has been a very hot summer but fall is not too far away.

Fat Fact Animal fats such as butter, cheese and lard are considered ‘saturated fats’ as they contain only single bonds in their molecular structure. They will remain solid at room temperature. Vegetable fats extracted from olives, canola or peanuts are considered ‘unsaturated’ as they contain double bonds in their molecular structure and remain liquid at room temperature. They are considered healthier for us as they help lower blood cholesterol levels.
