I retrieved my luggage from the carousel at the airport. It was broken and shredded. I took it to my lawyer and said I wanted to sue the airline. “I don’t know,” he said. “You don’t have much of a case.”

Fire Ban The Fire Ban is still on. So are the recreational vehicle restrictions. It is very hot and dry out there so wildfire hazards are still extreme. ATVs, motorcycles and such are banned from Crown land altogether. Do not drive or park your vehicle (car or truck, etc.) in grassy areas; they must remain on main, established roads. It is really common sense. Hot exhaust manifolds, pilot lights on campers, cigarettes, sparks from machinery, etc. are all high-risk situations. Please be careful and wise.

Shop Local Back-to-school is a huge retail shopping time in our culture. Parents and students get out and purchase clothing and supplies for the upcoming school year. Please do your best to buy as much stuff locally as possible. I know that it is tempting to run into the city, but remember that we have a fairly tight, closed economy in the valley. The money you spend at a local business stays mostly in the valley to be spent at another local business. Money spent out of the valley almost always stays out of the valley. So shop local as much as possible. It may cost a bit more but the whole valley can benefit from the economic boost of local spending.

Always remember that everyone out there has some issues in their lives. It could be health, money, work, relationships, family, addictions, depression or a combination of any of these and so many more. We all like to walk around like life is going wonderfully, but nearly everyone has that knot in their stomach, tying them down. No one has a perfect life. And all this affects us, all day, every day. It is nearly impossible to stop our brains from worrying about yesterday and tomorrow. But because of that, we really miss out on a lot of the pleasures of right now, today. The beauty of a flower, feeling loved, sunshine, good music, laughter and more. Life can be good if we let it. But do remember that the person that is frustrating you is going through a lot of stuff themselves. Everyone is. And often the stress and worry are overpowering and it is affecting their daily activities. Cut everyone some slack. Help each other get through these days of distraction and stress. Be kind. Be nice. Be forgiving. Be helpful.

Training I am feeling pretty good. I just did 45 minutes on a treadmill. If only I could stop the beeping noises and the complaints of the cashier.

My human, Rob, leads a very busy, very diverse lifestyle. This summer has been big with wildfire duties. I am ‘Watson the Warden,’ travelling around looking for fires and talking about wildfire risks and safety in the back-country of our valley. They are long, hot days, with no airconditioning and lots of dust, but you know what? I love it. I love being with my master. Rob tries to leave me home on occasion. He has friends that will take care of me. But I prefer to be with him. No matter where he is or what he is doing. I feel safe and loved around him. So how do I show that? Well, as soon as the front door opens in the morning I am off to sit near the truck. There is no way he can get in that truck without me. On the days that I am left behind, as soon as I see him I am yelping and barking with joy and I will not leave his side for hours. So why do people have pets? Because of the incredible bond of trust and love that forms between us. You cannot beat this feeling.

What Year Was It? The Apple II computer went on sale and Apple was incorporated, Jimmy Carter was elected, the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline opened, GPS and MRI were invented, Atari released the first video game and Reggie Jackson hit 3 home runs in a single World Series Game. The last execution by guillotine took place in France, Quebec adopted French as their official language and the Toronto Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners played their first games. What year was it? See page 9.

Back to School It is a great time of year. The kids are going back to school. For some of the kids, it is a great thing. For others, it is a dreaded event. The same for parents. For some, it is a great relief knowing the kids are engaged and learning while for others it is a scary thought as the kids head out from home every day. I hope all you students have a great year. There are lots of great things about school, including friends, learning, sports, problem solving, team-building, and more. Take advantage of this time of your life and find a way to enjoy your days

Total Eclipse Last week I mentioned that the eclipse was not all that spectacular for me. I do have to admit that I have seen some pretty incredible photographs of it and it did keep the temperature a bit cooler for a couple hours that day. Riddliculous Answer (From page 2) Fifty is the answer. Dividing by half is the same as multiplying by two. Twenty times two is forty, add ten to get fifty.

School Zones School is headed back into session these days. That means lots of youth of all ages out and about on the roads. So please be very careful with your driving. I am thinking the school zones will be closely monitored by the RCMP so that is a good reason to go slow. An even better reason is that we care about life and don’t want to see anything happen due to poor driving practices.

Here are some of the most common reasons why:

Call Home

Garbage must be put out by 8 a.m.

“Mom, don’t be alarmed, but I am at the hospital.” “Son, please. You have been a surgeon for 8 years now. Can we start our phone calls differently?”

Garbage Everywhere

www.valleypeak.ca

We live in an incredibly beautiful area. Nature is wonderful. But nearly everywhere I go, I see trash that has been left behind. Sometimes in a park area, the beach, in camping areas, and more. It is so disappointing to think that people are that lazy and disrespectful. If you pack it in, please pack it out. It is pretty basic. Don’t expect others to clean up after you.

Effective Pest Treatment I have to offer a shout out to Invermere Pest Control for the good job this season. I moved into an older house in June and there were lots of ants around. IPC came in and gave it a treatment. There has not been an ant around since then. If you are looking for effective pest control, contact Darren at Invermere Pest Control at 250-688-1235.

Garbage not getting picked up?

Garbage bags must be put in standard containers and not exceed 25 kg per individual container. All garbage must be in plastic bags and not loose in the bin. If standard containers are kept in an enclosed structure- remove them on morning of garbage pick up. Tags for attaching to garbage containers in excess of 3 per residential premises per week can be purchased through the District of Invermere office for the sum of $1 each. These extra bags must also be put in standard containers.

Anticipation I am very food-driven. I think about food often. It is amazing that I am not much more overweight than I currently am. I love the anticipation of that first bite of something delicious. This time of year, a sweet ear of corn, slathered in butter with a bit of salt and pepper on it will put a twinkle in my eye every time. A fresh, sweet, garden tomato, the perfectly-ripened peach, a juicy slice of watermelon or a crisp, fresh apple. Just knowing that the next bite you take is going to be delicious is a wonderful feeling.

An Apple A Day Remember that apples are good for you. They may not ‘keep the doctor away’ but they do provide great taste and nutrition. Apples contain enzymes that stimulate brain activity even more so than caffeine. An apple in the morning will have you ‘thinking straight’ in no time. Great Lunch Specials

Shooting Stars

Kootenay Coffee Works, next to Bavin Glass, has some amazing lunch specials every week. On Monday enjoy a grilled Rueben with homemade soup. Tuesdays it is baby back ribs and soup. Thursdays bring prime rib, complete with yorkies. Wednesdays & Fridays change up weekly. They also have a great variety of sandwiches, and other lunch foods plus an incredible selection of desserts. The breakfasts make a lot of people happy every day. Oh, they sell coffee too. Try them out. You will be back many times.

The sky was not very good for viewing at the peak of the Perseids meteor shower in August. Things were pretty smoky around here. But the thing to remember is that there are always meteors and ‘shooting stars’ out there. The Earth is flying through space and we hit lots of dust and debris. I have seen shooting stars 2 of the last 3 nights and one was a huge, bright, sky-crossing event. I love the night sky.

B.C. Goes Wild The weekend of September 16 and 17 is ‘BC Goes Wild Weekend 2017’. There are many activities across British Columbia. Here in Invermere, WildSafeBC is hosting a camping tips and bear spray demonstration at Pothole Park from 10 am to 1 pm. All ages are welcome.

Wonderful Dining Experience If you are looking to enjoy a fantastic meal at a nice restaurant with an amazing view, try out Citadella in Radium. Turn up at the Woodcarver and go to the very top of the road. You will get a great view of the valley around Radium while enjoying some spectacular dishes, such as filet mignon, chicken cordon bleu and more. They specialize in authentic Hungarian cuisine. You
