Be polite, respectful, open, honest and sincere out there. Pretty basic concepts that can help you develop strong personal and business relationships. Hold a door open, help someone carry something, say “Please” and “Thank You” whenever you can. Folks enjoy the company of a polite person. Respect those that you meet. Listen to them and try to understand their point of view. Consider how your words or actions can affect those around you. Be open with your thoughts and needs. Be assertive and tell people what you want or how their actions are affecting you, just don’t be hurtful. Be honest, with yourself and with others. If you find yourself having to lie about something you have done, then you probably should not have done it or be discussing it. Be sincere. If you love someone, tell them often, but make sure you mean it. If you are grateful, thank them and if you are feeling remorse, tell them you are sorry. But only if you truly mean it. Sincerity is sweet.

Rate of Spread Every day in these weather conditions, the Southeast Fire Centre in Castlegar gives the crews a notice regarding how fast a fire can spread. Lately it has been pretty fast. Yesterday’s rating showed a one-minute spread rate of 14 metres and a half-hour spread of more than 3 hectares. So be very careful out there. Do not light a campfire as a single ember can do a lot of damage very quickly. Do not burn anything right now. It is way too dangerous.

Watson’s Waddle I think that us dogs can be described with two beautiful words. Love and hope. We are full of both. It is obvious the love that we have for our humans. We make lots of eye contact, our tails are wagging, we follow them around everywhere, we moan when we see them, lick their faces, jump with joy and we cuddle. We want to be loved and we want to show our love. And then there is hope. Every minute of every day, I am hoping for something. Often it is just to be left alone for more sleep. But more often it is for some attention. I hope that every person and dog will say hello. I hope that Rob will talk to me or give me a scritch. I hope I am going for another walk or that someone will feed me soon or fill my water dish. As a dog, I really have to hope that my humans love me enough to make sure that all my needs are met.

This coming week, the theme for the Windermere Valley Museum Children’s Program is early crime in the Rockies. With the first mining towns and villages in the mountain came some unruly characters and behavior. Will it be stealing, murder, double-crossing or otherwise? You solve the crime and help get the museum back in order. The program is running Tuesday, August 8, from 10:30 am to noon for children aged 6 to 10 years. The cost is by donation to cover the cost of materials and supplies. Snacks and juice will be served. Please call 250-342-9769 to register.

How Many Words? I often think back to the high school days when I would be assigned a 500-word essay and think how huge that was. I would have 2 weeks to complete it and feel that was totally unfair and nearly impossible. Now here I am writing for a living (well almost a living anyway). I actually took the time to count how many words I generate each week. Well over 3,000 words! Every single week! I never imagined that in my wildest dreams. My education is in Biology and Biochemistry so not once did I consider this possibility. It is a fun adventure though, trying to keep up with everything happening in the valley. Make sure you keep me posted of your upcoming events.

Add an ice cube or two to your furry friend’s water dish if you’re away from home all day. Fill half a pop bottle with water and freeze it, then wrap it in a towel and leave it in your kitties favourite lounge place. Pet your cat with a wet cloth, postpone playtime, and close the curtains to keep your kitties cool. And never ever leave your pet in your vehicle in this heat. Next Thursday, August 10 is Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen. All proceeds from all Blizzards sold that day are donated to the nearest Children’s Hospital. My favourite is the Turtle Pecan Blizzard. Just sayin’.
Canadian Sports Trivia Answer In 1966, Elaine Tanner dominated the swimming world, and was known as ‘Mighty Mouse’. She was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy at the age of 15. She retired at the age of 18 after breaking the Olympic 100-metre backstroke record but only winning silver. Her personal disappointment and the public criticism were too much for such a young athlete.

Ziplines With the addition of two new Zipline adventures in the valley, life is pretty good for the thrill-seekers. I had a run down one of them. And yes, it was a fun rush. It makes me wonder what is inside of us as humans that we are always looking for a bit of a rush? When did skiing become less for transportation and more for adventure? When did the toboggan become more for thrills than hauling cargo? Who was that first person to try it? Anyways, it is pretty universal within all of us to test our limits of fear on occasion. That is always a good thing. Get out there and have some fun. Maybe even get out and try ziplining.

Did you know that hodgepodge is an actual thing? It is a vegetable dish that is cooked in milk. Mom reminded me of it over the phone this week so I tried it. Boil carrots, string beans and peas in a bit of water (add potatoes for thickness if you like. Drain out most of the liquid and add butter, milk, salt and pepper. Let that simmer gently for awhile (pretty vague). The taste is incredible. I have actually made it a couple of times last week and am still loving it. It is very flavourful the next day. Mom says it was a staple dish in Nova Scotia. Give it a try.
Strange Fact Do you know what is really odd? Any number that is not divisible by 2.
Something Moved Up There I look into the night sky a lot. I find it very intriguing. I can always see something moving, whether it is a satellite going by, a shooting star, or just an airplane. But on occasion I see things that are tougher to explain. This week it was a pretty bright light. It was brighter than the rest of the stars so I thought maybe it was a planet. But then it got quite a bit brighter before fading into a dim light and beginning to move. I was able to watch it for a few seconds and then it faded away. I wonder what it was and if anyone else happened to look up at that time. And of course a lot of folks now wonder if I am crazy.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 is from a couple of years ago. Most folks in the area can tell you where I was. I was driving through Radium and sharing the road with some amazing wildlife, the Bighorn Sheep.

How can course management improve my game? Course management is often overlooked or not understood by the average golfer. Mostly this means selecting the correct club and target for the situation, and playing to your strengths. For example, on a long shot, take into consideration the lie that you have, if it is sitting down and might be difficult to hit, use less club to ensure you make better contact and aim for a safe landing spot instead of getting too aggressive. If you have to lay up, shoot for the distance that you play the best from. Better to give yourself a full swing than a tricky half wedge shot. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Dazzling Gifts Galore Stop in and check out the gift store, ‘Dazzling Gifts Galore’ located between Bike Works and First Choice Realty on main street Invermere. They have some very unique items that are totally affordable. Right now they are highlighting hand-crocheted jeweled baby crowns and moccasins. They are really, really cute.
Perseids Meteor Shower The Perseids is the busiest and brightest of all the meteor showers with the possibility of up to 200 ‘shooting stars’ per minute. Unfortunately, the moon will be threequarters full and very bright so it will wash out some of the dimmer ones. The meteors are awesome to watch every year with some bright balls of flame crossing the sky. The shower is happening now but is supposed to peak next weekend.
Telepathy I find mindreaders really annoying. I wonder if they call tell.
Learn to Say ‘No’ Many people are way too busy and end up highly stressed as they get no time to relax and be with themselves. ‘No’ is not usually in our vocabulary and we end up agreeing to doing too many things. Both Trudi and I have issues with this. The more you do for some folks, the more they expect from you. So learn how to say ‘No’ without feeling guilty. Set some boundaries and learn to respect and take care of yourself. It is awesome to help people but it is also important to help yourself stay healthy.
Food Driven You may have noticed that I enjoy writing about food events and venues. I love food. It makes it tricky to stay at a reasonable, healthy weight when I constantly consider food. I am really looking forward to making a late lunch today. It will be a chicken clubhouse sandwich with a healthy bread, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and barbecue chicken from last night. Writing about it is making me want to go make it right now.
Sciatica Health issues plague many of us. A few years ago I had a tough case of sciatica that took a lot of work to get rid of. Sciatica

involves a nerve in your back that is aggravated enough to cause numbness and pain in your leg(s). Sitting and standing are uncomfortable. I still find that sitting in certain positions can aggravate it. Right now it seems like sitting at a computer writing a paper doesn’t really agree with it. I recently saw someone with their laptop raised up so they could work on it while standing. I can definitely see the logic of that right now.
Don’t Stress Every single day I have so many things that do not go the way that I had hoped they would go. Every day. That can lead to a lot of stress and grief. But lately I have figured out that so much of it is out of my control. And that makes a huge difference. It takes away a lot of stress if you let a bunch of the stuff just happen without worrying about it. I can’t control some things so I should hardly give a second thought to them. It is tricky but very enlightening. So let the things go that you can’t control. It will change your life.
