Where is the location of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame? (Answer on page 7) August 4-10, 2016 Volume 14 Issue 32 Retro at the Beach This Thursday, August 8, head down to Kinsmen Beach for the Retro Party from 5 pm to 8 pm. “What is a retro beach party?” you ask. Sandcastles, hula hoops, hooks, surf music by Frankie and Annette and more. You know, lots of fun. Thanks to Columbia Valley Paddle, Family Dynamix and the District of Invermere for hosting the Thursday beach parties.

Be The Miracle Next Thursday, August 11 is Miracle Treat Day at Dairy Queen. All proceeds from all Blizzards sold that day are donated to the nearest Children’s Hospital. In our case it is the Alberta Children’s Hospital which has done some great work for many local kids. So mark that date for the day you enjoy a Blizzard at Dairy Queen. My favourite is the Turtle Pecan Blizzard. Just sayin’.
Music on Main This Friday, August 5, enjoy the sweet sounds of Carly Reirson in front of the Radium Visitors Centre between 7 and 9 pm. She will liven up the Market on Main that is happening from 4 to 9 pm. This week’s sponsor is Bighorn Meadows Resort. Music on Main and Market on Main happen every Friday evening throughout the summer. Thanks to all of the sponsors of these wonderful evenings.

RETRO BEACH PARTY THURSDAY, AUGUST 4 5-8 PM 8
Be polite, respectful, open, honest and sincere out there. Pretty basic concepts that can help you develop strong personal and business relationships. Hold a door open, help someone carry something, say “Please” and “Thank You” whenever you can. Folks enjoy the company of a polite person. Respect those that you meet. Listen to them and try to understand their point of view. Consider how your words or actions can affect those around you. Be open with your thoughts and needs. Be assertive and tell people what you want or how their actions are affecting you, just don’t be hurtful. Be honest, with yourself and with others. If you find yourself having to lie about something you have done, then you probably should not have done it or be discussing it. Be sincere. If you love someone, tell them often, but make sure you mean it. If you are grateful, thank them and if you are feeling remorse, tell them you are sorry. But only if you truly mean it. Sincerity is sweet.

Watson’s Waddle I think that us dogs can be described with two beautiful words. Love and hope. We are full of both. It is obvious the love that we have for our humans. We make lots of eye contact, our tails are wagging, we follow them around everywhere, we moan when we see them, lick their faces, jump with joy and we cuddle. We want to be loved and we want to show our love. And then there is hope. Every minute of every day, I am hoping for something. Often it is just to be left alone for more sleep. But more often it is for some attention. I hope that every person and dog will say hello. I hope that Rob or Trudi or the girls will talk to me or give me a scritch. I hope I am going for another walk or that someone will feed me soon or fill my water dish. As a dog, I really have to hope that my humans love me enough to make sure that all my needs are met.

The Thrifty Reporter Wow, we sure live in a beautiful area and there is just so much to do. I am always taking photos while on my hikes, on the lake in my kayak or attending one of the many events in town. Then there are the sunrises and sunsets that are simply gorgeous. With all these photos I decided to create a “My Valley” photo album. I headed to the Invermere Thrift Store to purchase a photo album (they have many). They even have printer ink, art supplies to embellish pages and how-to books on just about any subject. The Thrift Store is a great place to stop and shop.

Life is much simpler if you keep your space around you free of clutter. Less is better for many people. Jackie at Home Made Perfect offers a few tips for decluttering. Keep a box or bin handy for donatable items. Make a plan (remove 3 items/day, etc.). Do an inventory of what stuff you have. Subscribe to a decluttering newsletter or pair up with decluttering friend for encouragement. Don’t go backwards: one item out for every item brought in. I know that I have a lot of stuff at my place that has outlived its sentimental and practical value. It is time. Call Jackie at 250-6884219 for more decluttering information.

They say that copying out of a single book or reference is plagiarism while copying out of several books is research. My question is, ‘What is it called if you are copying your own work?” Sometimes, if there is an annual event coming up, I will take content from an article of the previous year. It is still interesting and relevant for the readers but a bit easier for the writer. Enjoy.

The Valley Peak is very much based on advertising. That is how it stays as a free paper to read. Many of my clients are finding it to be very effective or them. It is most noticeable with new clients as they often see results very quickly. Where are you spending your marketing budget? Is it effective, paying for itself and more. Email rob@valleypeak.ca to find out more about affordable and effective advertising.
Learn to Say ‘No’ Many people are way too busy and end up highly stressed as they get no time to relax and be with themselves. ‘No’ is not usually in our vocabulary and we end up agreeing to do many things that we really shouldn’t. Both Trudi and I have issues with this. The more you do for some folks, the more they expect from you. So learn how to say ‘No’ without feeling guilty. Set some boundaries and learn to respect and take care of yourself. It is awesome to help people but it is also important to help yourself stay healthy.

I had a comment on an article a few weeks ago about an act of kindness. The reader said the article made her feel great and that I need more articles like it. So if you have a short story about a random act of kindness that you have received or witnessed, feel free to email it to rob@valleypeak.ca and I will print it so others can share the happiness.
Scrambling I have an incredible lifestyle. Broke and busy, like most people in the valley. Broke but living a wonderfully rich life. We get to do things that folks travel from afar just to try (often at great expense). I really appreciate where we live. But it does leave me scrambling on some Sundays and Mondays. I attend as many things that I can and make mental note to write about them but I should be making written notes. It is funny how some writing days my brain is reaching very hard to remember all the ‘mental notes’ that I took. Other days the ideas are flowing freely. Life is awesome.

Good Fire Sense As a Fire Warden, I get to chat with a lot of campers on busy weekends. It is nice to see how many folks care and drown their fire pits overnight and when leaving the campsite. Thanks for that. Shame on those who leave their campfires burning. That is just lazy and disrespectful. A bit of wind can really blow things around.
Tough Math They say that 2/3 of Canadians don’t understand fractions. The other 1/2 just doesn’t care.

Bumper Crops A lot of fruit trees and berry bushes have really enjoyed this year and are producing bumper crops. I have an apricot tree that has produced a ton of fruit. Trudi’s apple tree is the same. Plus I hear there is a pretty good crop of huckleberries out there this year. I have seen a few folks with purple hands. God is good .
Healthy Lifestyle I found this article from last year: I had an incredible run for more than a year, trimming down nearly 40 pounds through healthier eating and some dog walks (thanks Matilda). But I am finding myself at a bit of a barrier. I would love to knock off another 15 or so pounds. So I will have to bump it up a bit. I still enjoy a bit of cheating on my eating plan and I guess I could do more intense exercise (ouch). I think that I am really addicted to chocolate.

So I shall try skipping before and after walks (and other times) to get the heart rate up there for a while. And more vegetables. I have never been a big fan of most vegetables but I do have a few favourites and a few others that I can tolerate.
