December 17 2020 Valley Peak

Page 1

Where are the 2021 World Junior Hockey Championships being held? (Answer on page 5) December 17, 2020-January 6, 2021 Volume 18 Issue 51 Christmas Break This is my last issue of The Valley Peak for 2020. It has been an interesting year that did involve downsizing the paper by a third (12 pages was tough). I want to thank all my advertisers, old and new, for their ongoing support. You make this happen. Thanks also to my proofreader, Dorothy, Palliser Printing, Jen, Sue, Charley, Ben, Kayla and others who have delivered. And thanks to the locations that allow me to leave papers for you folks, my awesome readers. Happy New Year!

Spell It Out Why is the Christmas alphabet only 25 letters? Because it has Noel.

Shop Local Christmas is pretty near right now. Are you ready? It seems like it might look a bit different for some of us. But it is certainly a great chance to support many of our local businesses. The economy is slow right now but money spent in the valley is most often spent over and over in the valley. The local businesses are putting every effort possible to make

it a safe and enjoyable experience for shoppers. So please do your best to pick up those gifts and holiday needs right here in the Columbia Valley.

Christmas Star On the evening of December 21, there will be a ‘great conjunction’ of Jupiter and Saturn. They will line up to look like one large star. Many consider this to be the reappearance of the Christmas Star. Monday December 21 is also the Winter Solstice. That is the day that we begin to see more daylight every day. Always a nice feeling. So definitely, with the planets lining up and the solstice, December 21 is a day of light and I think we all should be aware of and seeking light.

Thrift Store The Invermere Thrift Store is taking a break through the holidays. They are not accepting donations between December 17 and January 6. Plus their retail doors will be closed from December 19 until Senior’s Day on Wednesday, January 6. Thanks to all their volunteers. They work hard to make a difference in the valley.

A huge thanks to everyone involved with the Columbia Valley Christmas Bureau. That includes anyone making donations of any type as well as all the amazing volunteers and organizers. Good work also by the businesses who hosted the Angel Trees and Toy Drives. Great Christmas and community spirit.

Riddliculous A man walks out into the pouring rain with no hat, umbrella or anything else to cover up with, yet he didn’t get a hair on his head wet. How is this possible? What is the only thing you can put in a bucket that will make it lighter? What gives you the power to walk through walls? See page 6.

Free Food Pantry Providing the Columbia Valley with delicious unique local & specialty items www.hopkinsharvest.com Located on Highway 93/95 at Windermere

Again, thanks to the couple folks who have been helping me keep the free food pantry stocked. It has definitely been getting some use. I am hoping for more community members to kick in a bit. You can find it at 1313 10 st in Invermere. Please feel free to take food from the pantry when you are in need. It is not the most exciting food but it will help get you through tough times. I am trying to put a few treats for the season in there once in a while. Cheers.

Freedom Rallies I believe the Freedom Rallies will continue downtown at Cenotaph at noon on Saturdays. I have heard that there is a nationwide one planned for Boxing Day. Please feel free to join the rally or head down and ask a few questions to see what it is about but keep in mind that no one wants any incidents or issues of any kind. Just a peaceful rally.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 6 Days a Week (Closed Tuesdays) Call 250-342-8885

Wilmer residents hold the Spirit of Christmas in their hearts and display it beautifully at Christmas. It is a beautiful community to check out in the evenings with all of the Christmas lights. It is well worth the drive out there. It is too bad the fireworks have been cancelled. That has been a Christmas Eve highlight here for years now. Hopefully they are back bigger and better next year.

This is my ‘Christmas and New Year’s’ issue. It is amazing how quickly a year goes by. So Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone. Most of us are in a much different situation than in the past for the holidays this year. Many will not see their family or as many friends. It is very sad as so many things can happen in a year. Life is much better when you can get together as often as possible with the folks you love. For me, it will be a very quiet Christmas. I have dialysis on the 24th and Boxing Day so Christmas is a day off. A nice gift from God I must say. Remember to incorporate God and Jesus Christ into your thoughts at Christmas. We could all use some light in these darkened times. As far as I can tell with these ‘scientific rules’, I will likely be dining alone this year. You know, social distancing, etc. I don’t want to scare anyone. I try not to imagine how many others will be doing the same. The old days of having an ‘orphan’s’ dinner are not likely to come back. So we must all find the joy in the things that we do have and are able to do. I will get to chat with family on the phone, enjoy some walks with Watson and maybe count on those one or two friends that I ‘bubble’ with, hahaha.

Bloodwork Waiting I am going through my quarterly wait on bloodwork results. Every 3 months I find out if my cancer is coming back at me yet. This round marks 2 years and 3 months. If I can go another 9 months then I become eligible for a kidney transplant if I can find a donor. So I have to sit and wait until January 13 to get the full results of my bloodwork this round. A month of wondering and worrying about how the rest of my life will look. I have to place it in God’s hands.

Pretty Valley Thanks to everyone who puts the effort into the fantastic Christmas light displays throughout the valley. Every community has some spectacular displays. As always, Dry Gulch and Wilmer shine brightly but there are so many more all around. Pothole Park looks great. Merry Christmas.

Invermere Cenotaph Park MERRY CHRISTMAS

I would love to see some snow. It is more Christmassy. I don’t need a lot of snow with my short legs and all, but I would sure enjoy at least a few millimeters or so. Mostly I love the feel on the bottom of my paws and I really enjoy plowing my snout through the snow. It is fun and the scents are just so much stronger that way. But even more importantly, I need some snow on the lakes. I do not like ice. It is too slippery for me. Some dogs look funny as they try to stop or turn while running around on the ice. But for an old Bassett hound, it is different. I had a tough day on Saturday with my rear legs splaying out and me unable to get up and get going. It was very painful and tough on my ego. The main problem is I love to hang out at the ice fishing shack through the winter but right now I can’t walk out there. Rob loves fishing but I think he loves me more so no ice fishing for him these days. On another note, Christmas is nearly here and I hope everyone has a fantastic time. I am hoping for a few treats and lots of walks. That would be a great Christmas for a hound. And Happy New Year, whatever that means. Time is pretty irrelevant in the life of a happy hound. I just look forward to everything every day and that seems to work great. Rob should try it.

Best Gift What actually is the best gift to give? A broken drum. You just can’t beat it.

What Year Was It? Russia put the first man into space and the first spacecraft onto the surface of the moon. ‘The Wonderful World of Disney’ debuted, as did ‘Mr. Ed’ and ‘The Wide World of Sports’. Wayne Gretzky and I were born, Barbie’s ‘Ken’ was introduced, the Berlin Wall was constructed and Pampers sold the first disposable diapers. What year was it? See page 7.

Great Gift I bought my partner a wooden leg for Christmas. It wasn’t the main gift. Instead it was just a stocking stuffer.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year to everyone. I have no idea what we have ahead of us but I do hope that 2021 is an amazing year of love and joy for everyone. It will a good year to be supportive and understanding of each other. I would note that it is hard to understand me and I may not be as understanding as often as I should be. Hopefully….

I had a gentleman call me with a story about growing up with a single mom in a mining community and how it was a tough struggle with him, his brother and sister. But every year at Christmas a group of miners would stop by with a Christmas hamper, some toys and a bit of cash for his mom. It has stuck with him his whole life and he has been a very strong supporter of the Christmas Bureau and many other fundraising events.

Thank God I love the way the Earth rotates on its axis. It really makes my day.

Kritter’s Christmas Don’t forget to treat your pets to a great Christmas this season. If you are finding yourself busy or just want to treat your pet, give Jen a call at Kootenay Kritters. I love ice fishing and doing it from inside a heated fishing shack brings it to a whole new level. You can see into the water, almost like an aquarium, when your shack is darkened inside. It is incredible. I am blessed to have access to a friend’s shack. It has been fun already this year. If you would like to experience ice fishing from a shack, you can rent one. The shacks come with all the rods, bait and other fixings needed for a great time. There are also firepits outside for roasting a shmallow or two. Call 250-688-3739.

Seasonally Delicious

Impress Everyone

From Scratch, a Mountain Kitchen in Fairmont is the perfect spot for a delicious meal through the season. The food demonstrates their own love of wonderful dining. The catering they do is outstanding. They also have many pre-prepared meals to take home and cook up for the crew (did I mention elk pie?). Or stop in for great gift ideas of in-house and local suppliers’ sauces, soup mixes, jams, preserves and way too many things to list.

With your beautiful, natural Christmas decorations this season. Talk to Perry at Kootenay Bough & Cone about wreaths, cedar garland, baskets, swags, Christmas trees and more. You see his products all through the valley on homes, businesses and hanging on posts, etc. It is incredible and unmatched by anything I have ever seen. You can view his items at Frater Landing in downtown Invermere (by Columbia Valley Trading) or you can find Kootenay Bough & Cone on Facebook. Give him a call at 250342-1324.

It Was That Year (From page 4) In1961, a house cost $12,500, a car was worth $2,850 and the average annual income was $5,315. Gordie Howe reached 1,000 games, Poppin’ Fresh, the Pillsbury Dough Boy debuted and the Hockey Hall of Fame opened in Toronto.

Ice Cream Cakes Remember to order a fancy ice cream cake from Dairy Queen through the holidays. They are so delicious. The Invermere Dairy Queen has some very talented cake decorators. The cakes I have seen there in the past year are incredible. It is hard to describe really. Just go down there and have a look. Treat yourself and your family this season with an ice cream cake.

Sad State of Affairs I am seeing more and more reports of our police in Canada lining up to close down Churches, even drive-thru ones. It is good to know that this is the most pressing issue they have to deal with in those areas. I am glad our local police are not quite there. I guess people could meet and rejoice in Walmart or Costco, maybe even a liquor store. It is a good thing we have all this science to save us from ourselves. I guess I wish I could understand the science behind some of these bizarre decisions on what is allowed or essential. I miss things like curling. Sorry, I really tried to stay mostly away from this topic this issue.

Self-Awareness My wife came home and told me the cashier at the grocery checkout was a mean lady. I asked her if she was at a self-checkout.

Think About It Here is a question for all of the mind readers out there.

Where Watson Was The page 6 photo shows Watson fitting in with the other animals at the Nativity Scene at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Radium. I have always known that God brought Watson to me and I am happy to see him pay tribute to the Christ child.
