December 20, 2018-January 9, 2019 Last Issue of the Year This is the final issue of The Valley Pea for 2018. It has been quite the year for me. A huge thanks to all my delivery folks, my printers, proofreaders, advertisers and you, the reader. A huge thanks to Heather McLeod for all of her work. She came forward when I was really sick and offered to help with the writing and has stuck with it throughout the last year. She continues to write a good portion of each issue. Have a great holiday season and I look forward to peeking at the valley with you in 2019.

Robservations

MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR

Woo hoo! The last Robservations of 2018! Two weeks off from writing. A nice relief. Anyway, thanks to everyone who reads this stuff and mentions it to me. You are inspiring. Here are a few of my thoughts on living with some happiness and having a wonderful 2019. It is up to us to change our little worlds around us. Be nice to everyone. It feels great. Eliminate some negativity from your life. It is crazy how many folks will complain endlessly about things that have no relevance in their lives. Increase your positive thoughts. We all live a million miracles every day; we just don’t see them. I live in a house with hot water and food. That’s pretty awesome really. Do daily random acts of kindness. Making a bit of a difference in someone’s day can make a huge difference in your day. Forgive it. Just let those bad things go. Love people, not objects. A new friend will bring you a lot more joy than a new toy. As will an old friend. Continue reading The Valley Peak. It’s always good for a smile. Have a great Christmas and holiday season. See you in 2019!

Holiday Garbage Collection Change There will be a change in the garbage and recycling pickup for Invermere residents. Tuesday, December 25th garbage pickup will be moved to Thursday, December 27th.

This is a crazy season. You folks call it Christmas. There are bright lights, strange songs, loud noises, weird decorations and characters everywhere. People even bring trees, my favourite peeing places, right into their homes and businesses. I seem to recall last year that a new bed and a couple of toys came into my life around this time. I wonder what will happen this year. Rob has been pretty good. He knows that sudden movements and noises startle me so he lets me stay pretty close to him when we are out and about. Everyone seems to have treats these days and I would love to eat them all but Rob seems to claim the baked goods while letting me have the doggie treats. Please pay attention to your pets through the holidays. It can be a scary and stressful time. Remind us that we are cared for with a little scritch or a friendly few words. It will make a huge difference to your pet.

What Country Am I?

Thursday, December 27th recycling pickup (B) will be moved to Thursday, January 3rd.

I am a very large country (federation actually), covering about one-eighth of the World’s inhabitable area, and I have the ninth largest population. I also am in possession of the largest cache of weapons of mass destruction. I border upon many countries (16) including the United States and Japan. What country am I? See page 9.

And, Tuesday, January 1st garbage pickup will be moved to Monday, December 31st.

As I get older and remember all the friends I’ve lost along the way, I think perhaps I wasn’t the best tour guide.

Wednesday, December 26th garbage pickup will be moved to Friday, December 28th.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact the District of Invermere office at 250-342-9281 or info@invermere.net or pick up a garbage and recycling calendar at the office.

Kidney Failure

3. Advent

Not much new on this front. A lot of reflection as I head back to Castlegar for Christmas and Trail hospital for training. A year ago now I was pretty unsure of my future. I had just found out about multiple myeloma and was waiting to begin chemo. I was very new at dialysis and kidney failure. Mom and I were learning a lot about food. Many foods that are considered very healthy for the average person are not good for folks with no kidneys. I was meeting a lot of new people, some with my health team and others that were living similar lifestyles. Lots of folks visit the dialysis wards. There are lots of kidneys failing out there these days. I was learning that out of all organs to fail, kidneys are not too bad of a choice. It can be deadly but it can also be managed with dialysis. Plus you get a lot of support from the Kidney Foundation. Meds and treatments are mostly free. Anyways, I certainly did not think I would be here today, preparing for another Christmas. I am not a big fan of the medical system but it has done me well with my kidney failure. Very well.

Side Effects

A GREAT GIFT FOR CHRISTMAS! DEAN HUBMAN

1346 Industrial Rd #3, Bay #3, Invermere, BC

One of my favourite ‘side effects’ from all of this is the fact that it gives me something that is easy to write about. I have been learning a lot about my body and how important it is to treat it right. I enjoy sharing what I have been learning with you folks, the readers. I hope that a few of you have been learning what to watch for with kidney disease. Itchy all over is a bad thing. I have also learned that it is helpful to many folks to be able to read about my health journey. So many of us have issues that we are afraid to discuss with anyone. I don’t really have that ‘go-to’ person so all of my readers are my sounding board. I find it healing to just put it all out there. A lot of people, many of them strangers, will stop me in the grocery store to discuss my health, their health or a friend having problems. I know that most of those chats help me and I believe they help others.

So I have finished having all the mercury fillings removed from my mouth. Unfortunately it involved having a few teeth extracted, a couple crowns, and some fillings replaced. A lot of work. I am through the worst of it now. It is just a matter of getting the dentures made. In the meantime the gums are still a bit tender so I am finding myself pretty choosy about my meals. Spaghetti works. Removing those fillings should strengthen my immune system. which will make it tougher for my cancer to grow again. It will be nice to have a healthy mouth again. As for now, I am learning that some food has a lot of flavor. With only two molars on the one side, chewing takes a while and gives me a chance to really savour every bite.

Be It Resolved Happy New Year everyone! I am happy that we got through 2018. It has been a crazy year that went by very quickly. What will you be resolving on New Year’s Eve. People love to make resolutions to change their lives. Personally, I have never found it to work very well for me. I am more likely to reflect on last year and try to highlight my highlights while contemplating my low points. We all make mistakes. I just want to be a good person, kind, giving, forgiving, helpful, supportive and all that stuff. That is what makes me feel good. I am also working on avoiding stressful situations. Just say ‘No’ and walk away to live a happier and longer life.

Local Shopping I read a great note from a lady who did all her shopping here in the valley and is very happy with herself. She notes the excellent service, the unique items and the joy of knowing that she has supported our community while finding gifts for her friends and family. And you know the rest. The money stays in the valley for respending, someone might get hired locally, all that stuff. It is a wonderful thing to take the time to get to know and support our fellow community members.

Tips to Happy Holidays The holiday season can be very stressful. We often tend to lose focus on the things that are really important. Here are a few helpful tips. Turn off the news. It’s bad. Be in love with everyone and everything. Remember that the best things in life are not things at all. Donate, give away or recycle any and all clutter. Take a break from everything. A real break. Hopefully you will have a chance to try any of these tips and reduce your seasonal stress.

It seems that the hard-working people are tired of financing millionaires and their friends and corporations. Similar to how I feel (and many other Canadians). They say most of us are two paychecks from bankruptcy. Many of us have to choose between paying for food, medications, hydro or even rent while our Government demands more and more of our money. It is a cruel, sad joke really. I am not sure how, but things really need to change.

Be Careful Out There With the colder weather, the roads definitely become pretty slippery. Every year I get that same reminder to change my driving habits; the corner right by my house is pure ice. It is funny how we almost forget about winter driving. And then it hits us. Anyway, please leave a bit earlier and take your time travelling. Expect winter conditions and it is up to you to get there safely.

Cash Woes I bought a vintage Rolls Royce but my budget didn’t cover a driver. So I spent all that money, and I’ve got nothing to chauffeur it.

Listen Carefully We all have our favourite songs and at Christmas, our favourite carol. My favourite is ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ It has an incredible sound and tells a wonderful story. I believe Bing Crosby sang it pretty well.

Christmas Eve Service For all the ‘two-timers’ (Church twice yearly, Easter & Christmas) out there and anyone else interested, the Lake Windermere Alliance Church has a wonderful Christmas Eve service. Enjoy singing, fellowship and a loving message beginning at 6 pm.

Tough Times It is hard to write about all of my thoughts without offending some folks some of the time. Especially along the topic of politics. I am pretty evasive. But I must say I am happy to see the people of France rallying against the Government and their tax increases, including the carbon tax.
