The Rockies will be facing the second place Fernie Ghostriders in the first round of the playoffs. The series starts in Fernie and returns here for games 2, 3 and 6. Games 2 and 3 are this Friday and Saturday, March 1 and 2. Both games are at 7:30 pm. This is playoff hockey folks. Fast and hardhitting. Get your butts into the seats and support these guys. Help inspire them to work a little harder. Go Rockies go!
Great Day My boss told me to have a good day, so I went fishing.. He must have wanted to come along because he has been calling me all day.
Needing Support When I was very sick and living in Castlegar and Trail hospital, I was contemplating giving up on The Valley Peak. It was tough to keep up with the Columbia Valley from such a distance. But I ended up with a lot of people stepping up to help. I had support with gathering information and writing plus, very importantly, deliveries. I may need a bit of help in the next few weeks (or years) as I try to keep the paper going at the same time that I am trying to keep my heart beating.

There is no one in the world who is the same as you and that is one of the great things about the world. We are all unique in the way we think, the way we look (except twins maybe), the way we feel and more. It is awesome. But for some reason everyone thinks they want to be the same. Television and social media are quick to show us what they think we should be like. And often we buy into it. Sadly. Do not be ashamed of who you are or anything about yourself. Not your looks, not your beliefs, not anything. It is no one’s business if you have grey hair, a few extra pounds, an old vehicle, different clothes or whatever. It just does not matter. What does matter is how you treat others. Be a kind, gentle person. Forgive people. Help people. Do not judge people (you will feel less judged). Be grateful. Take the time to notice the great things around you and you will become one of the great things. See the beauty and you become the beauty. Really, you are already the beauty, you just have to see it in yourself and let it shine.
So I took my laptop into the home hemodialysis training session thinking that I would have some free time over the 4 hours hooked up to do some work on The Valley Peak. It seems I was a bit optimistic. I would say that today was one of the more intense days of learning that I have had in a long time. It will be no problem after a couple more days but there are so many clamps and connections that it looked scary. And apparently I was very dehydrated so my blood was thick. Too thick causing at least 20 arterial pressure alarms. Overall fun and interesting and at least I am learning about alarms.

Watson’s Waddle Like all dogs, I want to be part of everything. If anyone in this house is going out the door, I want to go with them. It can be a walk, a car ride or just to shovel the driveway. I want to be part of it. It all makes me happy. Humans should live with the same attitude. Be up for everything. Don’t waste time worrying about what might happen. Just get out there and do stuff. Meet more people. Experience different things. Get in the habit of looking forward to everything that you are doing. It is amazing how that will change your life. You will be running around with your tail wagging every day and everywhere. See the joy and you will be the joy for everyone around you. Get more invites to more things just by being that happy person that enjoys everything and is a pleasure to be around. It works for me, but I’m just a cute old hound.

Kidney Failure
VINTAGE AUCTION CANAL FLATS TUESDAY, MARCH 5
HEALTHY BEGINNINGS Child Development Fair Friday, March 8 1-6:30 pm Columbia Valley Centre
So I am sitting at Mom’s place in Castlegar. Tomorrow is my first official day of training on my home hemodialysis machine. I am excited and nervous all at once. Really this is my last hope at staying in Invermere unless there is a kidney or two being given and inserted. I have been feeling much stronger since I have been doing the trips to Cranbrook twice weekly and will be even more stronger once doing home hemo three times per week. The peritoneal dialysis was keeping me alive but not very well. In two weeks I hope to be sitting in my home dialysis room (fully stocked like a hospital renal ward) and pushing my blood out of my body for cleaning. There are some risks involved but the benefits outweigh them by far. In other words I would rather die than have to leave the valley haha. Kidney failure really sucks and Invermere is a brutal place to be to deal with it. Hopefully that changes one day. There are many people out there in various stage of kidney failure. It is a growing industry.

I am my own worst critic and right now I am into some heavy judging and disappointment in myself. I hate being so busy that I am rushing to get this issue done. You may not notice but I have taken a few shortcuts, including some copy and pastes from past issues (I often do that but not as much). I am hoping you understand that I am in Trail hospital for about 7 hours on the day that I am normally doing this writing. It is making it all a bit tricky.

My Progress Okay, so many folks are wondering how my oncologist meeting went last week. It has been a few months since I have been updated on my condition and it is usually pretty vague anyways. This time I was fortunate to meet with my family doctor prior to the oncologist so I had an idea of where my bloodwork was at. And here it is The key number is a ratio of kappa and gamma light chain proteins. Right after chemo it was around 4.15 which is good. At the end of November it had begun to climb to 4.5, a bad thing but still good, low numbers. This month my blood is showing no change since November. I am still at 4.5, showing no growth in my cancer but it is still present. From the oncologist’s perspective, no maintenance chemo yet. Things are good. From my perspective it is carry on with my natural remedies such as, and especially, cannabis oil. The timing seems pretty good as I began taking it in November and bumped quantities up in December. It has really helped with overall body stiffness also. Awesome.

I am definitely finding that most of my side effects are diminishing a bit since I have been getting back to hemodialysis instead of peritoneal dialysis. Apparently high levels of urea prevent the body from healing very well. I am definitely feeling stronger, less fatigued and my balance is improving. Having so many things wrong with my body that are combining to make me feel miserable has been a tough gig for the past 16 months. I will say that the cannabis oil has really helped with general body pain such as sore back, shoulders, elbows and knees. And it seems to be helping with the cancer suppression. The timing is right but try to convince a doctor that. I am hoping that fulltime home hemo will work even better than where I am at now. It would be great to feel normal again. I have continued to lose weight but that is mostly because I am just not eating enough. It is hard to commit to cooking a meal when you only have three hours between dialysis. I just hate to take the time to prep and eat a good healthy meal.

Stellar Person While I was away in Calgary for dental work, one of my stresses was the nearly empty firewood room in my house. My plan was to go find wood upon return. But my friend Jen put out a FB posting and found someone to help her out. Steve at Stellar Concrete contacted her, showed up with a truck and went for three loads from RONA. They were just finishing up when I arrived home. It was enough wood to get me through the couple weeks until the next load showed up. Thanks also to Diane and Werner Einer for the great load of wood that showed up a couple days before I left for Castlegar. And thanks to the others that have helped. There have been many and it helps makes life tolerable and affordable for me.

(From page 4) In 1971, a house cost $25,250, a car was $1,866 and the average annual income was $10,600. The first Texas Instruments pocket calculator was sold, the first Cat Scanner was developed and the Ed Sullivan show debuted on TV. Disney World opened in Florida, Greenpeace formed and Led Zeppelin IV was released Overall, a pretty good year.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows a common sight in the valley this time of year. Ice fishing on one of our many lakes. This one was White Swan.
Small Effort, Huge Results Last week I decided to spend a day telling people what it is that I appreciate about them. I managed to keep that plan together for most of a day and chatted up 20 or so people. It was an incredible adventure. It is amazing how that felt and how happy people were to hear it. Everyone wants to be appreciated and nearly everyone feels very underappreciated (myself included). The way that one simple sentence, “Hey Joe, I really appreciate the way you give me a welcoming smile whenever I bump into you” (for example) or anything like that will make Joe’s day. Give it a try.
Strange Look Last week I told my wife that she was drawing her eyebrows too high on her forehead. She looked surprised.
It is Pathetic Here we go. As we are coming into tax season we are also hearing about huge increases in BC Hydro and ICBC, as well as the carbon tax. Everything is going up rapidly. Too rapidly and too much. Is there any increase or improvement of services? Of course not. It is just our governments stealing more and more of our money any way they can. Huge raises and pensions, crazy bonuses for CEOs and more. Canadian workers are trapped in a financial hell, struggling to get by while the folks that are supposed to be helping us are just ripping us off. Good luck everyone. Cash in those RSPs, cancel those holidays, starve your family

FAIRMONT
This has been a crazy week on the news regarding issues in the backcountry. The avalanche risk is very high right now. Please be careful if you are headed into the bush. Check the risks, obtain the proper equipment, tell friends where you are headed and be prepared for everything.
Choreplay A great new word that makes good sense. Do you want to be more attractive to your spouse? Do the work around the house together. It is actually a very intimate experience to cook together, clean together, or even do yardwork together. Being near your partner while sharing a task is a good thing. You will learn a lot about yourself, your partner and your relationship.
