January 10-16, 2019 Snow Golf The 18th Annual Kinsmen Snow Golf Tournament is coming up this Saturday, January 12. It runs in early January as that is the most consistent time for good weather. Registration is at 11 am for the noon shotgun start. This is an incredible adventure on Windermere Lake down by Kinsmen Beach. Conditions can be tricky but it is always fun. Teams show up with some really great ‘golf carts’ with fire pits, stereos, couches, barbecues and more. Entry is $35/person and it will likely sell out. The 9 Annual Snowflake Festival is happening next Friday, January 18 at Kinsmen Beach. It is a great celebration of winter in the valley. It begins at 4 pm with the first curlers hitting the Bonspiel on the Lake. There will be live music beginning at 5 pm and the ‘Taste of the Valley’ starts at 6 pm. It is a great chance to sample food from 9 valley restaurants (passports at the festival for $10). A fantastic fireworks display at 8 pm out on the Lake closes the festival off with a bang. More volunteers are always welcome. Email events@invermere.net.

Keeping Warm

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

One of the really lousy things with all this health stuff is that I am constantly chilled. I wear long johns indoors and a coat that used to be good for minus 30 is what I wear at minus 3. Fortunately the place I am renting is heated with wood. There is a stove in the basement and a fireplace in the living room. Many nights I have both going and still feel chilled. Visitors get hot quickly So it is all about fire wood for me. I had some amazing donations in the late fall but have burned through most of it. I have bought some as well but that gets costly. And I am just too weak to gather the stuff. So if you feel you have a pickup full of fire wood that is in your way, I have just the place for it.

Go eat some tasty food, drink a pint or two and show your support for these two young guys, doing what they love. Robservations The Robservations column is one that I usually just start with a basic idea and see what flows. It is an adventure. Happy New Year everyone. I hope this is a great year for you. Many folks tend tell me that they hope this year is a ‘better’ one than last for me. I know that everyone means well with that statement but 2018 turned out pretty good for me. I really thought I was done in 2018. Not the “I’m done" hissy-fit thing, but really done. You know, the scary word, dead. With the multiple myeloma and chemo, kidney failure and dialysis, diverticulitis, diabetes and more, life was looking very short. I can’t say it looks long now, but longer than it was. I should take the time to thank all the folks who have helped get me through this so far. And thank God for bringing Watson into my life. So many people doing so many things and others offering. It is amazing what a difference love makes in my daily life. In 2018 I became very aware of my health and took charge as much as possible. 30 years too late, mind you. Yes I had a lot of challenges, but I got through most of them. I can see some huge challenges ahead for me in 2019. But that can bring huge successes. Make sure you reflect on your great moments of last year and think about what you are hoping for this year. No one is going to deliver it to you, you are going to have to go out and get it.

Congratulations to Tyler Powell on his latest curling adventures. Tyler has been playing competitively with a junior team out of Vernon, Team Colwell. On New Year’s Day they played in the final of the B.C. Junior Men’s Curling Championship. Team Tardi from the lower mainland defeated them in 12 ends to carry on to the nationals. A great performance by Tyler and the team. Making Invermere proud. A good testament to the wonderful teaching in our junior program.

Warmth is a great thing. I have pretty thick fur so I don’t mind the cold too much but last week when it was minus 15 or so for a day, my feet really bothered me. I get ice and snow (maybe even salt) between my paw pads and they begin to bother me. It is quite painful. Rob actually put my paw protectors on for one walk. It was pawesome. I also seem to have to stay home more often. It is a bit too chilly to hang in the vehicle for very long. Normally I am good with that but I so like to be kind of warm. I have noticed that he seems chilled a lot lately. He is always wearing a lot of layers of clothing and crazy thick jackets when we go out. So I try to help out as much as possible. If he is on the couch I will make the sacrifice and get up there and cuddle with him. You know, share the warmth. Of course I also let him share my king sized bed. Sometimes he puts the blanket over me just to steal my heat. But I like it. Love it really. And love is what it is all about folks.

The first canned beer was sold, the first paperback novel was published by Penguin, the first Gallop poll took place, the first pair of male briefs were sold by Coopers, the first major league night baseball game took place, the world’s first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were the first Western team to win the Grey Cup and Amelia Earhart was the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean. HAPPY NEW YEAR May 2019 be Great! 250-342-9316

Happy new year of no kidneys. I got through the last one anyways. I did a bit of time at the Trail hospital through the holidays with a lot of bloodwork. It turns out that yes, peritoneal dialysis is not clearing enough toxins from my body. I need to do the blood cleaning thing, hemodialysis. That leaves three options. I can stick with PD and go to Cranbrook once a week or so to just get caught up, I can drop PD and go to Cranbrook three times a week or I can try hemodialysis at home. I was tested on a modern home hemo unit while in Trail and it seemed to go pretty good. It is quite intense though as I will be dealing directly with my blood and circulatory system. One tiny screw-up on sterile technique and the infection goes systemic (into all my organs) very quickly. Scary. In a couple months I will go back to Trail for two weeks training. In the meantime the equipment and supplies arrive here. I will have my own renal unit. I will have to learn to ‘needle’ myself, putting large needles in my arm for blood lines. That I don’t like. Apparently I will feel much better overall, which is a good thing. I definitely have not been feeling like I am gaining any ground lately.

Winter? This has been the strangest winter. I mean spring. Or winter. Record snowfall in some places, bare grass elsewhere. People and vehicles breaking through the ice. There are plenty of winter events booked for January, so let’s hope Mother Nature respects all the organizers’ hard work and cooperates with some nice, thick, safe ice, plus snow where we want it.

I get a lot of questions about my cancer and chemotherapy. Unfortunately I never really know the answers. The last blood tests were in December and showed ‘strong’ results but kind of inconclusive. My myeloma is not curable, just remissible and they figured it was 90-95% remissed but a couple numbers in the blood have come back up a touch. Therefore there are more tests this month and a meeting in early February with my oncologist in Kelowna. Hopefully he will have some information for me. It will be 4 months since chemo so it should be time for some direction. I know that I have been feeling weaker every week. I had thought that ending chemo would change that but I guess the kidney failure thing is a huge factor. We shall have to wait and see what is happening.

Side Effects So yeah, I do not seem to be regaining strength since ending chemo. It seems to be related to the dialysis and how the peritoneal dialysis is not clearing creatinine, a muscle waste product, out of my body very well. With this seems to come some vertigo. I am having some issues with balance lately. More and more each week. I just lose my balance. I have been lucky so far that I have had something like a wall or vehicle to grab on to. However that is tough in the open areas so I have resorted to using a walking stick on my dog walks. Otherwise my walks are like a zigzag as I step diagonally to regain balance a few times. I pray that going back onto hemodialysis will help clear this up. It is exhausting having to stay focused on balance all the time and it is mentally tough not being able to do most of the things that I really used to enjoy doing.

Happy 2019 to all! Hard to believe a week of the New Year has already passed. I am glad the Invermere Thrift Store is back to regular hours and accepting donations. I have a few slightly used but still in good condition items that need a new home. Taking them to the Thrift Store it is a winwin situation...my items find a new home and the Thrift Store makes money which in turn is contributed towards healthcare equipment for our community and scholarships to post-secondary students. Love a win-win.

Frist Article So here we go, Happy New Year. This article is my first bit of writing for the year. I thought in December that with two weeks off I would be super organized and ready to fly for this week. I have to clean and back up all my files this time of year. Instead I am in the usual scramble mode, building ads and writing on the last couple days before print. It was an amazing two weeks of not really worrying about anything though. It was nice to hang with Mom, revisit the Trail Renal Ward and see a few old friends. Cheers to a great 2019.

Bonspiel on the Lake The Bonspiel on the Lake is coming up in just 2 weeks. Sixty-four teams will be playing the sport of curling at the ground roots level, outside on the lake. Huge amounts of volunteer effort will go into organizing the event including preparing the ice surface. Good luck to all the curlers this year. It is a great mix of locals and visitors and coincides with the Snowflake festival.

workshop at the Mountain Hub on Saturday, January 26, from 1 to 3 pm. The workshop costs $40 (or $30 for Hub members). Sign up by emailing karen@akashicjourney.com and start collecting pictures and phrases that make you feel great.

FAIRMONT

I broke a finger at work the other day. It was quite painful but on the other hand, I’m okay.

Live Jazz With a Local Star

Assuming the ice is still frozen on Saturday, January 26 … Registration for the annual Fishing Derby opens at The Station Pub at 8 am, with contestants vying for plenty of prizes from 9 am to 3 pm. It costs $35 to sign up. Head to Kinsmen Beach to compete, or just to watch the fun and slide on the ice. The Station Neighbourhood Pub will be open for meal breaks and for those who’d rather cheer on the contestants from the (heated) sidelines.

Invermere’s own Morgan Childs will be back in town on Sunday, January 27 for a 6 to 9 pm jazz/swing/soul/blues performance at Pynelogs. Local folks might remember his drum solos at the Big Band Dances and highschool performances in the 1990s. Over the past 20 years, Morgan has become one of Canada’s top jazz musicians. Get your $25 ticket and cheer on one of our own.

The photo on page 6 is actually from the Echo in 1987. It is the Bonspiel on the Lake with Perry Horning, the current icemaker for the spiel in the darker clothes.
