January 12-18, 2017 Live Comedy I love comedy. Laughing is a wonderful, healthy thing to do and The Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium loves to help us with that. ‘Yukyuks on Tour’ will be at The Horse this Saturday, January 14 with two funny people. Comedian Lori Ferguson-Ford has won ‘B.C’s Funniest Comic’ and has appeared on several television specials. She is a very funny lady. And emcee Ben Cannon is a very funny guy. He is a past president of the University of Calgary’s comedy club. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. A great value to put some laughter into your life. The show begins at 9 pm and the shuttle service is available. I will be there and I hope to see you there also.

Rockies Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies came out of last weekend with a couple of defeats at home. Both Fernie and Kimberley managed to get the best of them. They are on the road this weekend but are at home on Tuesday, January 17, hosting the Golden Rockets at 7:30 pm. The Rockets are close behind the Rockies for the final playoff spot so it should be a hard fought game. Come on down to watch some good, fast hockey and cheer on the Rockies.

Open Mic Live Music Mondays at the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium is always a great evening. Talented musicians perform form 7 pm to 9 pm every Monday. This coming Monday, January 16 is ‘Open Mic’ night hosted by Marty Beingessner and Larry Newman. Open Mics are always really entertaining as there is so much talent in this valley. The food at The Horse is fantastic so plan an evening out on a Monday and treat yourself to a fun evening.
Invermere Legion This week’s meal on Friday night is a Roast Beef Dinner including Yorkshire pudding, gravy, veggies, dessert and more. It happens at 6:30 pm. They will be running 50/50 and meat draws on the Friday and Saturday evenings so everyone has a chance to be a winner. Thursday evenings the Legion hosts Texas Hold’Em Poker and cribbage and on Saturdays they have darts. The Invermere Legion also hosts the cook shack on the lake during the Bonspiel on the Lake. Some great food for folks using the ice near Kinsmen Beach. Stop in for good food, good fun and good fellowship.

This world seems to need a lot of things. Everywhere I look I can see things that are not right. I really wish that everyone would change. Living in this world really sucks. For some reason, that is a pretty common thought process. Sometimes even for me. I can blame everything on the condition of the world. But really, what does the world need right now? The world needs ‘a better me’. If I want my world to be better, then it is up to me to make it better. How can I do that? I can start by looking at things differently. Clearly if I think someone looks like they are a jerk, then they will seem to be a jerk even if they are the nicest person around. Why? Because of my energy, not theirs. If I see someone struggling I can laugh and judge, or I can be positive and offer assistance. My energy can change the world instantly. So is it time to change your world? Because you are the only one who can do it. Every person and every situation has some good in it. It is up to us to look for the good everywhere. Anyone can see the bad things but we will find happiness when we can see the good.

Watson’s Waddle Wow can life ever change. For 7 years I was attached to a chain and I yelled (barked) at anyone or anything going by, hoping they would come give me some love and attention or even release me from the chain. Seven years of dreading every day and yearning for a change. Then finally, someone listened. They took me off that chain and took me home. I was very excited and showed my appreciation by telling them (barking) constantly. That didn’t work out very well so they took me to a shelter. Another couple of people tried to help me out by taking me home but they found I was a bit too loud for them so back to the shelter. Then everything changed. And it was worth waiting for. Instead of a lifetime of suffering I am now in a lifetime of love. I get to write my own column, I meet hundreds of people every week, I visit and help sick people, I get lots of walks, good food and Rob can’t walk past me without a kind word or a rub. So to all you animals (humans and others) out there; hang in there, do your best, have faith and you never know what may happen. What Year Was it? Cigarette ads were banned from U.S. television, Jim Morrison of ‘The Doors’ was found dead, Lance Armstrong was born, the first email was sent and the first microprocessor was developed by Intel. Joe Frazier defeated Muhammad Ali, the Nasdaq stock exchange was formed and Charles Manson was sentenced to death. What Year was it? See page 10. Stinker

We all have issues in our lives and many of us use different ‘crutches’ to help us get through our days. For some it is alcohol. For others it can be one of many drugs out there and for many it is a combination of lots of things. B.C. and Canada are in an opioid overdose crisis. Many folks (including here in the valley) are being lost to this situation. Folks from all walks of life. I cannot tell anyone to quit using drugs, etc. but I am going to make a suggestion. Plan your partying. Make sure there is someone else around who is aware of what you are up to. I know that we like to keep our lifestyles secret but something that simple may just save your life. And there is help out there. Tell your problems to someone. None of our demons are worth losing our lives over.

January 12-18, 2017 Cheers to the Arts The Station Neighbourhood Pub really wants to donate $25,000 towards new, advanced audio-visual equipment for the Multi-use Community Hall being built in Invermere. So they have been contributing a dollar for every pint and three bucks for every jug purchased at the pub since last October. They are planning on matching the beverage donations so really they are just hoping to raise $12,500. Currently they are at $7,566. So get down there and enjoy a sip of beer or two and make a difference in the community. Cheers to the Arts!

Kinsmen Fishing Derby The 17th Annual Kinsmen Fishing Derby is coming up on Saturday, January 28. Fisher-people attempt to catch the largest non-game fish (suckers and pikeminnows). Prizes are $500, $300 and $200 for first, second and third place. The Derby runs from 9 am to 3 pm. Register at The Station Neighbourhood Pub beginning at 8 am. Entry is $35 and that includes a burger delivered to you on the lake by the Kinsmen ( a great touch). It is another one of those great events that take advantage of Windermere Lake in the winter. I look forward to it every year.

Ned Hanlon is often considered Canada’s first-ever World champion. He was the rowing world champion for a few years in the 1880s. He was so dominant that he would often blow kisses to the crowd during a race and sometimes he would quit rowing to let his competitors close the gap a bit. during his career he won more than 300 races and was defeated only 11 times.

Bonspiel on the Lake This year’s Lake Spiel is coming up pretty quick. Next weekend, January 20-22 brings a lot of curlers to the valley. It is always an incredible event. Sixty-four teams try to dominate curling at the grassroots (lake ice) level. Curling experience and skill are barely helpful as the lake ice is a great equalizer. There has been a couple late withdrawals so if you are interested in entering with a team this year, call Judy at 250-341-1340.

Mondays are by far my most cumbersome day of the week as I sit and type on the computer all day. One of my tasks is to contact a few clients regarding their ads for the current week. This week one of the clients asked if I like writing The Valley Peak. I guess I sound pretty down every Monday when we chat. I hadn’t really realized that. It forced me to remember how blessed I am with what I do for a living in this valley. I get to voice my ideas and opinions on all of you every week (who gets to do that in this world?). I get to visit the whole valley with deliveries. I get to attend so many great events.

Yes, there are lots of winter activities happening in the valley. On the lake there are events like the Snow Golf, the Fishing Derby, Pond Hockey and Curling Bonspiel. What do all these events have in common? The need for warm clothing! It is really great to walk around and watch the events or just take a nice walk on the Whiteway but only if a person is dressed toasty warm. If you need a nice warm coat, toque, mitts or boots please visit the local Invermere Thrift Store. They may have just the items you need to keep you toasty warm while you enjoy the outdoor activities.
There is a Difference Not everyone can get along in this day and age. That is pretty obvious. And even though we want to be liked by everyone, we know that is not possible. That is okay. Similarly, it is okay if you dislike someone. But it is not okay to disrespect or humiliate someone that you do not get along with. That is not right. Instead, you can ask yourself why you don’t like them and change your attitude, you can be indifferent and not feel any emotions or you can step up and show them love which just might change everything.

Many business owners invest loads of money and time into starting up their businesses. You need a venue to work out of and you need to build up a stock of the products that you are offering. But many miss that next step. You have to tell everyone about your business. You can tell all of your friends and you can post all over Facebook but you are still reaching a limited audience. Your friends can only support you for so long. The Valley Peak has 1,500 friends (readers) every week. The valley and its visitors read The Valley Peak and see the ads. Advertising is very affordable ($30 or less for an ad) and very effective.

If you want to see an interesting, inspirational video, check out Lindsey Stirling on YouTube. Look for the ‘Hallelujah’ video where she is playing violin in a subway station. She is an amazing, world-renowned ‘hiphop’ violinist who has a very giving heart and she is reduced to a nobody in the video. It is a huge contrast for her. Check it out (the music is great too). There is a bit of a spiritual message at the end which may not be your thing but I enjoyed it. Find some joy in your daily life.
Spend It Wisely Imagine receiving $86,400 every day. If you were to lose $10, it would be no big deal. Every day lasts 86,400 seconds. Unfortunately, we often let a 10 second negative encounter affect the rest of the day. Forget about the bad stuff and focus on the good. You will have incredible days.

Pond Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies are hosting the Pond Hockey Championships on the weekend of January 27-29. Teams from all over will be enjoying the great Lake Windermere. There will be lots of people and lots of fun. Teams can enter in different categories depending on how serious they want to be. You can find out more on the Columbia Valley Rockies website.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 is an old classic one that applies to January in the valley. It is a photo of Lake Windermere at Kinsmen Beach where the Bonspiel on the Lake is all ready to go.
Spaghetti Squash In my never-ending quest to eat a bit healthier (and still enjoy the meal) I recently became reacquainted with spaghetti squash. Obviously it can be eaten like spaghetti, a nice healthy option, but it is also a very easy option to prepare. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and scrape out the crap in the middle, leaving a ‘bowl’. Then fill the bowl with your spaghetti sauce and bake in the oven at 350 for 45 minutes. It works great. A slight variation is to microwave the halfsquash for a few minutes first and then bake for a shorter time. A cheesy option is to add shredded cheese 15 minutes before it is done. Enjoy.
Eye See I was really late for my appointment on the way to the optometrist. On the way there I kept bumping into people.
Book Your Campsite Reservations opened up for campsites in British Columbia last week. They are trying a new system that will hopefully work a bit better for everyone. Good luck to everyone who goes through the system. We are pretty lucky that there are so many back country options available here.
Slippery Conditions It is winter in Canada, including here in the valley. So when you are planning an excursion, consider the road conditions. You probably don’t even have to ask anyone how the roads are because, well, it is winter and they are slippery.

Last Friday there were 3,500 accident claims with ICBC. In one day! Lots of highways were closed for safety reasons. We have been pretty lucky here. So give yourself some extra time. Drive carefully. Things can happen in an instant that can change many lives forever. Please drive to arrive.
Lift Your Eyes and Spirits Where do your eyes go when you are out there walking? A lot of us tend to keep our heads down, looking at the cracks in the sidewalk. We miss a lot. Lift your eyes and have a look at what’s ahead of you. See more of the beauty of the world whether it is a blue sky, colourful flowers or darting birds. If you are approaching someone, look them in the eye and give them a smile. Make every moment a positive one. Look up from the cracks and see the joy.
Grateful Thanks to all of my readers, advertisers, printers, delivery folks, proofreaders and anyone else that helps with The Valley Peak. Thanks to Watson also.
