The Bonspiel on the Lake was a great success due to the work of many volunteers and the cooperation of the weather. The ‘A’ event winners were the ‘Kerr’ team. They have been coming to the spiel for years. Congratulations. The other event winners, ‘B’, ‘C’, and ‘D’ were all local teams. Percival, Horning and Brunner all gave great performances. I would note that all three local winning skips were down working on the installation of the ice. Worthy winners. It pays to volunteer.

To me, sometimes Robservations are a bit redundant. I just keep telling you to be a good person. This week’s column is pretty much a summary of all of that. Be polite, respectful, open, honest and sincere out there. Pretty basic concepts that can help you develop strong personal and business relationships. Hold a door open, help someone carry something, say “Please” and “Thank You” whenever you can. Folks enjoy the company of a polite person. Respect those that you meet. Listen to them and try to understand their point of view. Consider how your words or actions can affect those around you. Be open with your thoughts and needs. Be assertive and tell people what you want or how their actions are affecting you, just don’t be hurtful. Be honest, with yourself and with others. If you find yourself having to lie about something you have done, then you probably should not have done it or be discussing it. Be sincere. If you love someone, tell them often, but make sure you mean it. If you are grateful, thank them and if you are feeling remorse, tell them you are sorry. But only if you truly mean it. Sincerity is sweet.

People are pretty easy to manipulate for a handsome hound like myself. I have these pleading eyes framed by my huge ears. It is hard for anyone to say ‘No’ to me. A quick errand downtown for Rob can turn into hours of visiting and getting lots of love and treats. At home I enjoy napping but food and exercise are always on my mind. I try to offer Rob some advice all day. We need to get out for a walk and he seems to forget that. Today is a long day for Rob on the computer so I do my best to help him out. It is important for him to get up and take a break on a regular basis. And I think a good break with a walk is best. So here I sit, near the front door, telling him that we should go for a walk. I think he needs another break. A quick walk will freshen up the brain for him. He seems to think that the walk we just returned from will hold him over for a bit. To me that is both crazy and lazy haha. Enjoy life folks, Take a break and go for a nice walk around the block. It will do you good.

COLUMBIA VALLEY FOOD BANK TOP TEN ITEMS WISH LIST Peanut Butter Canned Fruit Canned Tuna or Salmon Spaghetti Sauce Canned Tomatoes Pork and Beans Boxed Cereal Tomato Sauce Canned Soup Canned Vegetables THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS!

The kidneys do a lot of work for the body. They stimulate the production of hemoglobin for one. Removing toxins from the blood and balancing fluid levels is another. When my kidneys failed I thought I was having a heart attack. Obviously they had been failed for quite some time. Studies show that a person can give it all up and expect to pass away in about 30 days. Some last longer. But yes, kidneys are important. They say a lot of pain-killers damage kidneys so watch for that when reading labels. I am very restricted on what I can use now but it was something I had never considered before. Make sure you have your doctor check you regularly for diabetes as that is often a precursor to kidney failure. Take care of yourself.

Equestrian Routine “My Auntie wanted to lose some weight so she took up horseback riding.” “How’s that working out?” “Pretty good. The horse has lost 15 pounds.”

Water Wise Have you ever heard of a cryoseism? A cryoseism, also known as an ice-quake, is a seismic event that is caused by the expansion of ice in rock or soil. As water drains into the Earth and rapidly freezes under cold temperatures, it expands and puts stress on its surroundings. This stress may be released in the explosive form of a cryoseism. These events can occur when there is a rapid drop to below freezing temperatures in a relatively short time period. Cryoseisms have been reported in Eastern Canada, but they have also occurred in Calgary, too.

My Progress Bloodwork for my cancer is happening this week so I will get the results on February 1. That will be interesting. As for the kidney business, I am really hoping that home hemodialysis falls into place and works effectively for me. It will be time-consuming but it will be so nice to get my urea and creatinine under control. Less itching and more energy. I don’t know much more other than that the installation technician guy is here this afternoon to see how things look in the house. If all seems fine then I am off to Trail for at least two weeks of training in the very near future. My house will have its own little ‘hospital room/renal ward”. I can’t wait to introduce my friends to the process. Peritoneal dialysis was nothing compared to this.

IT’S HERE TO STAY!

Beyond Meat Burger! Open Daily 6 am - 8 pm

How personal do I want to get? My Mom will hate this article. I put a lot of effort into reminding readers to stay positive as things will always get better. And I try to stay positive through all my health journey. But this weekend was a tough one. I am depressed. More so than I could have ever imagined. The Bonspiel on the Lake was a huge reminder of how I can no longer do many of the things that I love and have always been able to do in the past. Snow golf fit in there also. And now I have to quit curling altogether as I have to go to Cranbrook for more hemodialysis. I really hate most of my life right now. There are not a lot of moments of joy and happiness, just work, disappointments and feeling crappy. I sit at home in tears hugging Watson many times and many hours every week. I know that I am blessed is so many ways but I am just in a head space that not even that knowledge helps. It is even sadder when I think of how many others are living similar or worse lives. Anyways, depression is a huge side effect for any major health issues. Spend some time with your friends and give each other some joy and happiness.

Robbie Burns Day Friday, January 25 is Robbie Burns Day. Burns was a celebrated Scottish poet and partier. Typically folks commemorate his passing with a dinner of Scotch broth followed by a toast of Scotch whiskey to the main course, Haggis. Often bagpipes are played and a grace is said before the meal. It has become a tradition in many places around the world.

Fishing Villages One of my favourite activities during winter in the Columbia Valley is ice fishing. I am a bit spoiled so I love the taste of a fresh rainbow trout from some of the mountain lakes. But what is really fun is fishing from one of the shacks on Lake Windermere. It is crazy the view you get into the water as the shack is dark and the lake is light. It is like fishing in an aquarium. You can actually see the fish swimming around. So if you have never had a chance, most of the shack owners are pretty friendly and willing to give you a quick view.

Longest Eclipse Ever The lunar eclipse on Sunday was pretty neat watching the moon disappear. But then it got cloudy at my place so it never came back. Normally on a clear night we see the moon because light from the sun is hitting it while it is lighting the other side of the Earth. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth actually gets between the sun and moon so the moon is actually passing through the shadow of the Earth. It turns dark. Sometimes it can appear reddish as the red wavelengths are not absorbed by our atmosphere so they hit the moon before the other wavelengths. Eventually the moon reappears as a growing sliver until fully glowing again.

Daily Lunch Specials

Tough to Survive

If you are looking for a quick and very tasty lunch in Invermere, try stopping in at Konig Meat & Sausage Company. They have fantastic food every day. While there you will have to check out all the amazing meats and treats that you can take home. The schnitzel is incredible. It all is. Check out Konigs today.

I usually avoid writing too much about politics and serious topics but every once in while… Things are spiraling out of control for the average person in Canada (and elsewhere). The cost of living is whacked. B.C.Hydro, ICBC, MSP, income taxes, retail taxes, grocery costs, gas costs, medicine costs and more. I can’t afford all that crap. A country of hard workers that pay most of our income to a bunch of elite millionaires that could not care less about us. The amount of stress that is caused by this is incredible. For most, the only way out is to win a lottery or die. It is sad. It seems that politicians (all parties) are in it for prestige and power rather than doing anything that actually helps the citizens. I remember the ‘good old days’ when Dad worked and Mom hung out with the kids. We had everything we needed. How did that all change so dramatically?

Top Snow Golfers The top golfers from the Kinsmen Snow Golf event were ‘Old Balls, Jesse, Kerem, Kevin and Joel. ‘The Hack’ were second (Larry, Mike, Paula, Chris and Bram) and ‘Big Balls’ (Brad, Brad, Matt and Devin) placed third. Thanks to the Kinsmen for such an amazing event. Get into it next year folks.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 is one I have used before. It is from the Kinsmen Ice Fishing Derby happening this coming Saturday, January 26. Register at The Station Pub.

Edgewater Soup Remember that the last Friday of every month brings the soup and bun luncheon by the Edgewater Seniors. It is a fantastic meal with a choice of homemade soups, fresh buns and biscuits, sweet desserts. With the new carbon tax, costs are rising. The luncheon is now $8, still an amazing deal for the meal you get.

Feng Shui Vision Boards They say you’re more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down. Vision boards also include pictures of your goals. Spiritual coach and Feng Shui practitioner Karen Adams is hosting a vision board workshop at the Mountain Hub on Saturday, January 26, from 1 to 3 pm. The workshop costs $40 (or $30 for Hub members). You can get signed up soon by emailing karen@akashicjourney.com and start collecting pictures and phrases that make you feel great.

Bossy What did Batman say to Robin just before they got into the Batmobile? “Robin, get into the Batmobile.”

DIY Wearable Art Pin Craft-lovers are invited to sign up today for the next adult craft night at the Invermere Library, which starts at 6 pm on Thursday, January 31. This month you’ll use basic sewing stitches to create a wearable art pin. Space is limited for this free event: call 342-6416.
