This Saturday, January 9, the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley will be picking up Christmas trees in Invermere. They are starting at 9 am so please put your trees near the curb on Friday evening.

This is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation so all donations will be gratefully accepted.

The Columbia Valley Rockies are only four points out of third place (Fernie) and five points behind the second-place Creston Valley Thunder Cats. The Thunder Cats are coming to Invermere this Saturday, January 9 at 7:30 pm.

The Rockies are 2-1 versus the Cats and meet them four more times. Each game is very important and will be a hard-fought battle. They could easily meet up in the playoffs as well.

So get off the couch and out the door to watch some live junior hockey. Be a part of the crowd cheering for our home team, inspiring them to dig a little deeper. It is a great night out.

I have really learned to tone down my New Year’s resolutions these past few years.

Like many folks, I am not always that great at following through for the long run. It can really disappoint me year after year.

But I do some reflection and look ahead to some improvements in the way I do things each year. I am fairly satisfied with my progress n 2015 as I worked to lower my weight and became a tiny bit fitter.

My main thought process involves finding happiness (obviously, if you read these columns regularly). I have made some good progress in letting go of things, judging people less, helping people more and being nicer to myself and others. I also have really given up on trying to conform to what is considered ‘normal’ just so I can be accepted. It has made a huge difference in my daily feelings and experiences.

I still have some work to do being nicer to some of the folks that I used to think that I don’t like. It takes a lot of the negativity out of my life which adds a lot of happiness.

Longevity “What are smiling about?” asked the nurse of the 98 year-old man.

“I just broke a mirror,” he answered.

“But that brings 7 years of bad luck.”

“I know!”

Watson’s Waddle Hello humans, Watson the Bassett hound here. I have so many things to talk about from the holidays that I am sure I will forget most of them by the time I have space.

One huge highlight was visiting the residents of Ivy House just before Christmas.

ICAN sets up monthly visits so that I can share my love and cuteness with others.

I met some nice people and some incredible dogs. My human, Rob, seemed to be enjoying himself also. He likes to chat with everyone and took me to say ‘’Hi’ to lots of folks.

If you have a dog that might enjoy some visiting you should get a hold of ICAN and get in on the program.

Please remember that it is cold out there.

Pond Hockey The Rockies are again hosting the B.C. Pond Hockey Championship on Windermere Lake. This year’s tournament is the weekend of January 29-31.

Tutors Wanted The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy is running a program to help with adult literacy in the valley. The program is dependent on volunteer tutors to fulfill the commitments made to learners.

Tutors may help a learner with reading, writing, numeracy, computer skills, learning skills or any other literacy skill that will help the learner be more successful in their everyday lives, work lives or education programs.

Tutors go through training and are then asked to commit 1-2 hours/week for a few months.

Hypnotic Night Trudi and I attended the ‘Jaydee Hypnotist’ show in Edgewater on New Year’s Eve. It was a very entertaining evening.

by Trudi as it wasn’t something that I had thought about but I am really enjoying it.

It basically tracks my activity each day.

Mainly the number of steps I take and a pretty accurate sleep profile (great for my apnea).

You start with a goal of 10,000 steps daily, which is pretty much achievable with normal daily activities (especially if you have a dog that you get to walk).

I actually do find myself checking where I am at and planning another walk to make sure I reach my goal so it has been a good thing.

With the colder weather lately the ice on Windermere Lake has thickened up pretty good. It is about 14 inches down at the Kinsmen Beach area. The District of Invermere has not opened the access gate yet as there are some thin spots out there in places.

But there is lots of skating and crosscountry skiing happening down there so get out and have some fun.

Winter Driving It is winter people! That means it is time to slow down on the roads.

When snow and ice are on the roads, they become slippery. No amount of plowing and gravel can prevent that. It might help, but it will not stop it from happening.

So, if you can afford them, winter tires are a great thing. Leaving early is a great thing.

Slowing down is a great thing. Anticipating stops and corners is a great thing.

Be responsible for your own actions and issues plus be considerate and wary of other drivers on the roads.

Where I Was? The photo on page 6 is actually from about 5 years ago but it shows an upcoming event. This is from the Kinsmen Snow Golf tournament, coming up on Saturday, January 16. Tickets are at the Station Neighbourhood Pub.

Just Plain Losers I try to stay away from negativity but every once in a while…

I just can’t understand why so many folks out there live in such a negative head space. They cruise the Internet and judge others on things that they have no background knowledge or connection.

A comedian put it simply like this, ‘We are at a time when people would rather scorn someone than do anything to help make things better’.

Slightly related, jerks who put viruses and crap into our computers are total losers also. Just think if they put all that technological talent into making the world a better place rather than screwing over the average working person.

It is a pretty simple concept; be a good person, all day, every day.
