Happy new year How many times has Canada won the World Junior Hockey Championship? (Answer on page 7) January 9-15, 2020 Volume 18 Issue 1.5 Snow Golf th
The 19 annual Kinsmen Snow Golf is happening this Saturday, January 11 in Taynton Bay at Kinsmen Beach on Windermere Lake. The shotgun start is at noon with registration at 11 am at The Station Pub. Entry fee is $35 per player. It is a lot of fun with different weather conditions every year. Sometimes the balls disappear in a foot of snow, other times they bounce along the ice. Temperature ranges from minus 25 to plus 10. Lots of challenges. Plus there are some unique golf ‘carts’ with fire pits, coolers, couches and more. It is a wonderfully unique experience.
Goal-Setting My resolution last year was to lose 15 pounds. As we bring in the New Year I only have 20 to go.
Park Centennial This year is the100th anniversary of Parks Canada. There is kick-off celebration at the Radium Community Hall on Monday, January 13, from 10 am to noon. Enjoy coffee and refreshments while the
Canada Post commemorative stamp is unveiled. Everyone is invited.
Love Live Music Mondays This Monday, January 13, the Horsethief Creek Pub hosts another of their superb music events from 7 to 9 pm. Live Music Mondays are always a great night out. This week brings L8 to the pub. L8 is one of the first live bands I saw in the Columbia Valley. Pretty talented. I hope you get a chance to go see them on Monday.
Sing & Celebrate Singing is good for us in many ways. We all know we feel better when a little tune is in our heads or on our tongues. The Alliance Church has a ‘Sing & Celebrate’ session this Sunday, January 12 at 7 pm. Friends get together, sing a few favourite hymns and enjoy some fresh baking for treats. It is a great evening.
Longer Days As we roll deep into January the days continue to get shorter and shorter. The winter solstice (shortest amount of daylight) comes just before Christmas on December 21. I am already noticing the days beginning to lengthen. My spirit brightens with this.

Happy is the key word folks. 2020 is upon us and we can each make a difference. Starting within ourselves, we all know what we could use to tweak a little bit to make things go a bit smoother. Try to not compare yourself with anyone regarding anything. This means that you should not judge yourself or others. We are all different in so many ways and on completely different journeys. Just enjoy it. Of course it is all easier said than done but The Valley Peak promises you that every little change feels good. Be kind. Be understanding. Be forgiving. Be helpful. Believe me, it is worth it.

Kritter Care Exercise is critical for animals. A young, healthy dog needs 2, 3 or 4 walks a day to be happy. If a dog does not get enough exercise it can lead to behavioral issues. Watson has been getting a lot of walks in our time together but since I became ill, I have not had the energy to always get out there. Thanks to Kootenay Kritters he is still getting all the exercise he needs. Jen loves animals and makes sure all her clients get what they need. She makes a lot of animals and their owners much happier. Make sure your companion is getting enough fresh air and exercise. Call 250755-6334 if you need a bit of support with that.

So happy New Year everyone. I am happy that you are carrying on reading The Valley Peak for 2020. I hope you have lots to look forward to in the upcoming trip around the Sun. A lot of us put plenty of energy into resolutions and wanting to make changes. We all hope to be a bit better person as we get older. I know that I want to be kinder whenever possible but I already find myself struggling at times. So that’s it for me. No more kindness this year as I blew it already. Just kidding. It is just a matter of regrouping and carrying on. I may not have been perfect when I wished to but that should not stop me from desiring to do better. Really it is just another chance to grow. I am pretty opinionated on many topics and that might push my limits on my niceness. I believe that everyone has their own ideas but how can they not be the same as mine? Hahaha. I know it is important to still maintain relationships with people who believe differently so I can debate and forget pretty easily. I just hope that those on the other end can do the same. I may think differently but I still enjoy your company. Life is an interesting adventure and it is definitely more enjoyable if we keep our drama down and our kindness up.
Look Good My 2020 resolution is to feed my friends more so they gain weight and I look slimmer next to them.
Advertimes Now is definitely a bit of a quiet time in the valley. A few less people come through at this time of year. That is why it is important to reach out to the locals. They are the ones that are around and spending money this time of year. What is the best way to reach the locals? With The Valley Peak of course. It is so affordable ($25/ad or so) and is very wellread both in the valley and online. It will connect your business to its customers. Just ask any of my current advertisers. Contact The Valley Peak and begin advertising with the paper that wants to be part of your success. Contact info is on the top of every page.

Being a Bassett Hound hanging out with Rob is a pretty good gig. We get out to see and meet a lot of people at a lot of places. And pretty much everyone loves me. I am pretty unique as far as dogs go and with my short legs I am not very intimidating, even for a child. But why are people really drawn to me? When you meet me you will see that it is pretty obvious. I am outwardly happy. My tail is straight up and wagging constantly. It is so joyful to see. My ears are perked up and my eyes are smiling. Any person or animal can easily see that I am happy and they like that. You should try it yourself. Be outwardly happy. Make it obvious that you are enjoying your day and see how that affects those that are around you. Be the light of joy that spreads amongst everyone you meet.” Now here I am in 2020. Rob has been working through some illness and I have had great support from Kootenay Kritters and many other friends. Life is still pretty good around here for a Bassett Hound.

What Country Am I? I am a land-locked country in Southern Africa. I am neighbours with Congo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia. My capital city is Lusaka and most of my population lives near there. My people speak 73 different languages but English is the official one. I am considered a ‘Christian’ country but similar to Canada, we have many denominations and traditions. Copper mining and agriculture have been my main economic providers. Football, rugby and cricket are my main sports. Maize is my main staple diet. What Country am I? See page 10.

Mental Health
SNOW GOLF SATURDAY, JAN. 11 KINSMEN BEACH
Hahahahahaha….. The holidays are over and with that a lot of stress and depression are relieved. Looking forward to my next counselling session to really debrief on all of it. It has drained me emotionally, physically and financially. I imagine it is the same for a lot of folks. I hope not. I did not give out many gifts this year so the guilty feeling of receiving gifts from someone that was not on my list becomes tough. And the fact that I owe so much to so many people who have supported me is also tough. I just don’t have the time, energy or money for a perfect Christmas. And now it is over and I feel some remorse, some relief and a bunch of other things (some joy also). But I know that I can go for a bit of help from the Mental Health Unit. They help me regroup my thoughts in many ways. It took a lot for me to go there. Constant suicidal thoughts. I am so glad I do go and I wish I had taken that step much sooner. I could have saved a lot of personal grief. So please don’t be afraid to talk things out with someone who will not judge you (they have heard a lot of stuff). Call 250-3422363 and ask about some support. Please.

I do a lot of scanning through old issues for relevant articles. It has been interesting reminding myself of the cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy and how that was affecting my life. In January 2017 I was living a pretty happy, healthy life with no indication of what was to come. In January 2018 my life was all about just trying to survive with the hope of getting back here to Invermere if I did. I did manage to pull that off. You folks held an incredible fundraiser for me at The Station that made all the difference. And many other wonderful fundraisers and donations. Thanks you. In January 2019 I was doing peritoneal dialysis and it allowed more independence. But I never felt well and was losing ground on toxins, getting sicker and sicker. Things were not looking well. I switched back to hemodialysis later in the spring to improve. And here I am in January 2020 feeling decent but always tired. But definitely feeling alive.
New Attitude I was going to quit all my bad habits for the New Year but I don’t want to be known as a quitter.

WOW... A new year and a new decade!! It is hard to believe that we are already into the year 2020. At the beginning of each year, I am motivated to purge my closets, both clothes and linens and I am happy that I know my slightly used items will have a new home. The Thrift Store is now accepting donations, however, please review what you are donating since only usable items can be resold to you as a potential customer. Please remember, any item donated that cannot be used by another person has to be hauled away as garbage which has a cost, resulting in less money donated. Remember, the first Wednesday of each month is Seniors 65+ shopping 1- 3 pm.

I think that I love winter. Of course there are many inconveniences like scraping windshields but it is so much fun being active in the winter time. During the holidays I did a bit of snowshoeing, dug out and tried the crosscountry skis, ice fished in a couple of lakes and took Watson for many walks. And the days I did these activities I felt great, mindfully enjoying life. Fresh air really tuckers me out so amazing sleeps. I wish I did not have these health limitations. I was remembering many overnight back-country trips in my youth on skis or snowshoes. We would head back into bivouac huts, get the fires going and just discuss life (or whatever, you know). We always felt accomplished and invigorated after those adventures.

Rockies Hockey
SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL FRIDAY, JANUARY 10 KINSMEN BEACH
A fantastic few games through the holiday season for the Columbia Valley Rockies. With their tie in Spokane and win in Grand Forks they have really catapulted ahead of Creston into third place. The Rockies have been a very strong hockey team lately. So who doesn’t love to support a strong hockey team? The Rockies host the Kimberley Dynamiters this Friday, January 10 at 7:30 pm. Kimberley has dominated the league this season but the Rockies have been very solid lately. On Saturday, January 11, the Spokane Braves will be here for a 7 pm game. The crowds have been growing with the improved performance so the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena is the place to be on game night. Lots of cheering, nice 50/50 pots, great music and atmosphere, good action on the ice and lots of community spirit. I hope you will be there this weekend.

Ice Fishing Ice fishing is something that I love doing and I try to get quite a bit in every year. Last year I thought I was pretty good at it but this year is much quieter. For me anyways. My friends are having no problems. The Kinsmen Fishing Derby is coming up in a couple weeks. It is on Saturday, January 25, from 9 am to 3 pm on Windermere Lake. Registration is at The Station Pub beginning at 8 am, Entry is $35 with a chance to win $500. I really don’t want you to enter as that reduces my chances of winning, but I thought I would tell you about it anyway.

To all the healthy, strong, young gentlemen out there, I challenge you to carry a snow shovel in your vehicle and stop and help anyone that you see that is out there shoveling. A random act of kindness towards a total stranger, a neighbour, family member, small business owner or anyone else who could use it. Other easy acts might be to scrape a few windshields, offer a ride, carry some groceries, take an arm on icy surfaces or even just hold a door and give a smile. Make a difference in your life, in your community and in the world.
Time Lapse “Happy New Year!” exclaimed the drunk. “It is February 9th,” replied his friend. “Wow, my wife is going to kill me”.
Keeping Warm One of the really lousy things with all this health stuff is that I am constantly chilled. I wear long johns indoors and a coat that used to be good for minus 30 is what I wear at minus 3. Fortunately the place I am renting is heated with wood. There is a stove in the basement and a fireplace in the living room. Many nights I have both going and still feel chilled. Visitors get hot quickly So it is all about fire wood for me. I had some amazing donations in the late fall but have burned through most of it. I have bought some as well but that gets costly. And I am just too weak to gather the stuff. So if you feel you have a pickup full of fire wood that is in your way, I have just the place for it.

Bonspiel on the Lake The Bonspiel on the Lake is coming up in just 10 days. Sixty-four teams will be playing the sport of curling at the ground roots level, outside on the lake. Huge amounts of volunteer effort will go into organizing the event including preparing the ice surface. Please respect the ice surface that is being prepared. Good luck to all the curlers this year. It is a great mix of locals and visitors and coincides with the Snowflake festival. The Invermere Legion will be operating the warming hut/cook shack again. Stop in and treat yourself to some Lake Spiel grub.
Where Was I? The photo on page 6 is from another packed-house event at The Flats Venue & Stage. Finegan and the Arcana Kings rocked. And I hate how I look in photos.
Healthy Eating It has been an incredible eating experience with my health issues. A renal diet for kidney failure involves virtually no salt, potassium or phosphorous. It is amazing much of that stuff is in some of our food out there. It has lead to eating almost everything that is home made and from scratch. No processed food. But not a lot of limits on quantity. Lots of food. It has been great to be able to eat as much as I like while I am actually still losing weight. Lots of good, healthy food and still dropping.. Make the effort to eat healthier folks, you will be pleasantly surprised.
Worksafe I have a few jokes about unemployed people, but none of them work.
Slippery Conditions It is winter in Canada, including here in the valley. So when you are planning an excursion, consider the road conditions. You probably don’t even have to ask anyone how the roads are because, well, it is winter and they are slippery. So give yourself some extra time. Drive carefully. Things can happen in an instant that can change many lives forever. Please drive to arrive.
Sticky Pasta I love pasta. But I always make too much. It can make great leftovers too. Often when pasta is left in the colander to drain, or in a pot or dish, it will stick togeth-

er in a big clump. It makes it tricky to sneak in that final forkful before putting it away. How do you prevent that stickiness? Just drizzle a tiny bit of olive oil over the pasta and stir it in. The pasta will quickly loosen up and stay that way in the Tupperware container in the fridge.
Facebook Flop So it was a good run for me. Many years of trolling Facebook. When I signed up I wasn’t really sure what was going on so I use ‘Valley Peak Peak’ as my personal page username. They did not like '’The’ in front of it. No issues for many years but now I have offended someone and they don’t know who I am so they have filed a complaint. I was given a few days to update my contact info but I am a stubborn man. I don’t care if everyone knows who I am, I like it. But I hate the concept of being forced to suddenly change to make them happy.
