Full of Bulls

Valley Appreciation Day

This year is the 18th Annual Bullriding in the Rockies event supporting the Columbia Valley Rockies hockey club. Last year’s event was completely sold out so get your tickets pronto. The doors open this Friday, July 21 in the Curling Centre at 5 pm with a ‘cowboy dinner’. The outdoor bullriding event begins at 7:15. Watch world ranked professional bullriders trying to stay on some incredible bull stock. The always entertaining bullriding clown (Dennis Halstead) and the crazy ‘Mexican Poker’ definitely add to the evening. Then a family dance with live music from ‘Kixxsin’ inside the curling rink. These guys are a great dance band with lots of country and rock to keep your feet hopping. Get your tickets while you still can. See the ad on page 3 for ticket information.

This Saturday, July 22 brings Valley Appreciation Day. This is a fantastic day in downtown Invermere where the District of Invermere, businesses and organizations combine to bring food, fun events, live music and more. Pancakes begin at 9 am (near the Legion) with all kinds of activities including interactive games and information booths. The Farmers’ and Artisans’ market will be set up on the main street and all the downtown businesses will be open so there will be a tremendous selection of incredible products to check out. Watch the cart races and the loggers’ show or just hang with the kids at the bouncy castles and kids games. Thanks to everyone involved putting together this great day.

Darn Dolls Do you want to know why I don’t like those Russian dolls? They are so full of themselves.

There is a charity barbecue to raise funds for the Columbia Valley Food Bank this Saturday, July 22 at Home Hardware from 11 am to 2:30 pm. Stop by for a quick lunch while supporting a great cause.

Summer brings employment to many students in the valley. For some of them, a summer job is their first experience with working for a wage. It can be a very nervous time for any of us to go to a new job so we know that it has to be really tough for a teenager. Walking into that first job with no idea of what to expect causes self-doubt for anyone. So it is important to be very supportive of new members of your team. Whether you are a boss or a co-worker, you are a huge part of the work experience. The best job in the world can really suck if your coworkers are disrespectful and unsupportive. It can affect your work ethic for the rest of your life. But any job can be awesome if you are working with a team that helps each other out and builds each other up. New, young employees can quickly develop the confidence to go to any job thanks to a positive relationship with co-workers. Thanks to all of the local businesses who offer employment to the youth in the valley. And thanks to those that take the extra time and effort to make the work experience a good one.

Provincial Record There are currently more than 37,000 people that have been evacuated from their homes in British Columbia. That is a new provincial record. Here in the valley, the hot dry weather will continue for a bit yet. Are you prepared (I am not really) to gather and leave if something was to happen? Watson’s Waddle Life is pretty cool for me these days. I am basically a ‘Fire Hound’. I get to travel through the back-country with Rob as Fire Warden. We cover nearly 300 km every day with many stops at creeks, lakes, campsites, viewpoints and more. It is pretty warm out there but I wade into lots of cool water a few times every day. I have really come to enjoy stepping into the water. It is a good life. I do feel for some of my neighbourhood buddies. I have one neighbour who is tied to a chain 24 hours a day and another who is put in his owner’s car every night at 8 or 9 pm. I don’t think they are experiencing the love that I am getting. I wish I could free them and change their lives. I can still remember my years on a chain. Seven years of being stuck in the same 20 foot area, all day, every day. That really sucked. Can you imagine that for a life? It is much better now that Rob takes me pretty much everywhere he goes. I have met a lot of people and pets in the last 20 months. Thanks life.

What Year Was It? Lance Armstrong won his 7th and final Tours de France (while cheating mind you), the movie ‘Madagascar’ was released, YouTube was founded, the Kyoto Protocol was introduced, Prince Charles married Camilla and the XBOX 360 was released. What year was it? See page 8.

Watson’s Wonder I often wonder what my dog calls me.

Live at the Horse Live Music Mondays at the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium brings ‘Zonnis’ to the stage this Monday, July 24, from 7 to 9 pm. They are a soulful acoustics roots duo inspired by roots, blues, rock, funk, musical comedy, country and more. Their music is an eclectic collection of stories highlighting the trials, thrills, humour and tribulations that come with life on and off the road. It will be a nice evening out for anyone.

Thanks to the District of Invermere for hosting the ‘Movies in the Mountains’ again this summer. Every Monday evening, at dusk, at Pothole Park, a free movie is being shown on a huge inflatable screen. It is pretty cool actually. The park itself is the perfect shape for a large crowd to sit and watch with everyone getting a great spot. This coming Monday, July 24, at dusk, ‘Trolls’ will be playing. Bring blankets and/ or chairs, appropriate clothing and bug spray. There will be a cash concession with snacks and beverages available.

Applause Did you ever think that clapping is literally hitting yourself because you like something?

Fire Behavior Most mornings I get to hear on the radio what the expected fire behavior is for that day. It is based on the moisture index combined with winds, temperature and more. Yesterday’s report indicated that a fire would expand 12 metres per minute or 2.5 hectares in a half hour. That is very fast growth. Please be very careful out there with cigarettes, generators, ATVS and pretty much everything else. Do not even consider a campfire! Be safe.

Thankfully we don’t have quite that many at ICAN, but there are still far more felines than we have room for. Camping Etiquette I visit a lot of back country campsites with my summer job, There are some very beautiful places in this valley. It is hard not to love it. Some of the places are very tidy but many have trash left behind from previous users. Often it is stuff tossed into the fire pit but other times it is just trash everywhere. Either way, the next person to use the site has to deal with it. It is bad etiquette for sure. So please, be considerate. Pack out what you pack in. Some things may seem minor, such as watermelon rinds, egg shells or whatever, but they can attract bears, bugs and other wildlife to a campsite.

Self Esteem You should always remember that you are unique, just like everyone else.

Tips from the Pro Why should I bother keeping my clubs clean? It may seem like only really picky golfers are concerned with keeping their clubs clean, but there is a performancerelated reason to do so. The grooves on your clubs are designed to “grab” the ball at contact, imparting spin, which makes the ball get higher in the air. If the grooves are filled with dirt, grass, etc, it is likely your ball will have a knuckleball flight, will drop quickly and will not get the spin it needs to stop on the green. Life just keeps getting busier and busier (while I seem to get broker and broker). I have started back on as a Ground Patrol Fire Warden. My job is to travel through the bush and talk to campers about fire regulations while also watching for fires in the mountains. It is a great part time job but the days I work really conflict with the days I normally write The Valley Peak. I do the writing on Sundays and Mondays, both days that I am out on patrol. So there has been a lot of night-writing this issue. I work until sleepy, take an hour or two nap and then back to writing. It is 4:19 am right now. The sky is just beginning to get lighter which is very beautiful. It will be a busy week for the proof readers.

We end up in many situations where we cannot control the things that are happening around us. It’s going to happen anyways. But we can control our reactions and responses to what is happening. We can be negative and hateful or we can be positive and helpful. The positive way feels much better.

Times have really changed with technology. A lot of folks stay inside a lot more and spend their time communicating with their computer ‘friends’ or watching television. Many folks never get to know their neighbour. I am blessed in that I have great neighbours. They are friendly, sharing and supportive. Most of the families in my area know each other quite well and are all there for each other. It is a nice way to live.

Tupperware I figured out why they called it Tupperware. It’s short for ‘Tupperwhere is the lid?’

Classic Car Show The Radium Classic Car Show & Shine has been a bit undecided on location this year. They were on the edge of moving it to the crossroads but have ended up back at the Radium Springs Golf Course driving range. Thanks to Brian Schaal and Copper Point Golf Course for stepping up and offering their driving range as an alternative venue. Good community spirit.

A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca

Utopia Detailing at its best. Utopia is the place to go. They do detailing on almost any type of vehicle, making them all look like new inside and out. This time of year they really specialize in boats and RVs. Stop in for a free estimate near Pete’s Marina in the industrial park.

Fresh Produce This is a great time of year for healthy eating. We see fresh local produce all around us at farmer’s markets, grocery stores and more. Cherrys and blueberries are happening now. It is awesome.

How to Cook a Steak Many folks believe that searing a steak at high temperatures will seal in the juices. This is nonsense. Searing does cause the browning that creates flavor, but it doesn’t seal in the juices. A steak cooked slower and at a lower temperature will be more tender and will retain most of its juices.

week or two at most. Imagine that. Only 2 weeks in paradise. You might have to really help them make every second count. So anyway, just be patient and relax and know that this is an amazing place to live.

Happy Birthday To my nephew Eric Molendyk in Burnaby. Eric has cerebral palsy and has lived in a chair most of his life. He is a very intelligent, very caring and very funny guy. One of my inspirations in life for sure. Happy birthday Eric.

BIG Book Sale A huge thanks to everyone involved in the BIG Book Sale this year. Last weekend had the old hall filled to capacity with books and happy readers. It is a lot of work. A great job by all the volunteers as well as everyone who donated books and everyone who showed up to purchase reading material.

Long Day It is a long one. I have run out of unproductive things to do while I am at work.

Quick Changes I am writing this article on Sunday evening and it is crazy how quickly the air quality in the valley has changed. It was nice and clear a couple of hours ago and now is very smoky. I can even smell smoke. It is enough to make a lot of people get nervous and wonder how close the nearest wildfire might be. But this is all just general smoke from around the province. It reminds me of how fast a fire can get going and how we all have to be very careful anywhere around the outdoors.

Be Patient and Enjoy It is has been and will be a few weeks of craziness in the valley. The same as every summer really. For many of the locals, life changes drastically. But it is a good thing for the valley. So rather than getting uptight and acting out of your normal, laid-back character, try just sitting back and thinking how incredible our lives are that we get to live here yearround. This time of year we see thousands of people who are just able to get out here for a
