When did women’s basketball become an official Olympic sport? (Answer on page 7) July 27-August 2, 2017 Lorraine Holmes It is a sad time in the valley with the loss of an amazing lady, Lorraine Holmes. Lorraine quickly developed many friendships with students, parents, teachers and anyone else she met. She dearly loved her family, friends, students, animals and life. She was always quick to smile, quick to laugh and quick to give. There is a funeral mass in Calgary this Saturday, July 29, at 2 pm, at the St. Bonaventure Church (where Pete and Lorraine were married), at 1600 Acadia Drive, SE. There will also be a Celebration of Life here in Invermere on Sunday, September 10 at 1 pm, at the new Invermere Community Centre. Donations in Lorraine’s memory can be made to the Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN).

Much on Main This Friday, July 28 brings another Market on Main in Radium from 4 pm to 9 pm, just out front of the Visitor Centre. It is a wonderful market. Watch for fresh B.C. cherries and blueberries from the Weaver Bee Company. They are delicious. At 7 pm ‘Dawson Rutledge’ will be performing live music for a couple of hours as part of the ‘Music on Main’ program. I don’tknow much about Dawson but I do know that everyone loves live music and all the performers have been fantastic this summer.

Steak Sandwich Dinner This week’s Invermere Legion dinner (July 28) is a steak sandwich with sides and a dessert. It will be delicious. Dinner is served every Friday evening at 6:30 pm. There is also a 50/50 draw and meat draws during dinner. It is lots of fun.

Farmers & Artists The Invermere Farmers and Artists market happens every Saturday throughout the summer in downtown Invermere. It goes from 9 am to 1 pm and offers a huge number of incredible vendors. I often go just to sneak in a piece of delicious fry bread or a chocolate sample. There are too many wonderful things to describe here so just go down there this Saturday. This Saturday, July 29, ‘The Second Winds’ band will be performing at the Cenotaph stage. Awesome.

Konig Meat & Sausage Company in downtown Invermere has some amazing products in stock. They make sausage in-store and the selection is huge. Some are very unique and they have won several competitions. They are also carrying locally grown Waygu/Angus beef from the J2 Ranch. It is fully inspected and hormone and antibioticfree. You can order halves or quarters or just stop in for select cuts. I would note that Konig did the meal at the ‘Bullriding in the Rockies’ event and it was delicious. The beef was very tender and tasty.

We live so much of our lives within our own tiny little brains. Any number of people can be at the same event and every one of them will have a different opinion of what was happening. Some people will find fault and flaws in the things that they see. Others will find pleasure and perfection with many highlights. But they all actually saw the same thing. They just interpreted it differently depending on their mood at the time, previous experiences or maybe based on certain expectations. So we should all try to remember that every person is different. Every journey is different. Every thought process is different. Very seldom will you find someone who is thinking the same things that you are thinking. And we all think that we are right in the way we are thinking. And we may be, but someone else may be correct also. Give people a break. Rather than deciding what you think someone ‘needs to do’, ask yourself what you need to do to help them out. It is a much better system. And always remember that happiness has nothing to do with what the world gives you. It is all about your interpretation of what the world gives you.

Boy do I hate storms. We had one the other night and it was crazy how the wind comes up as a warning and things are blowing all over the place. Rob will close up the doors and windows for me even though he loves the storms. He is strange as he will actually go outside to watch the storms. Myself, I have a different approach. I seem to find porcelain comforting. For some reason that Rob will never figure out, when there is a storm, I am headed to the washroom and trying to get tucked in as close to the toilet as possible. I did it at the old place and I do it here. Rob tries to comfort me by getting me on the couch and cuddling me but to no avail. The first bang of thunder and I am gone. I believe that most dogs have such issues. We are actually scaredy-cats. Do your best to provide your pets with comfort and reassurance during these thunderstorms.

DAWSON RUTLEDGE JULY 28, 7-9 PM MUSIC ON MAIN RADIUM

A great job by Cortney of Invermere Events in putting together the Valley Appreciation Day. The whole day was a tremendous success. The music was nice, pancakes and sausages were delicious and all the information and demonstration booths were very well put-together. It was nice having the Farmers & Artists Market right on main street. Thanks to everyone who lent a hand to help set-up and tear-down as well as all the vendors, volunteers, organizers and attendees. Get involved if you are able.

Today I watched a car in front of me attempt to pass a dump truck who was following a motorhome. Just then the motorhome decided to turn right so the trucker swerved around him. It was close. It reminded me of myself as a youngster (sadly). Tailgating, passing in tight spots, that sort of thing. I survived but I have sure changed my style. Hang back a bit, go with the flow of traffic, maybe pass the occasional car. I still get everywhere, usually 2, 3 or even 5 minutes later. But with so much less stress for me, my passengers and other drivers.

Canadian Sports Trivia Answer Women’s basketball became an official Olympic sport at the Summer Games in Montreal in 1976.

Good Indicator You know that you have reached old age when your back goes out more than you.

Huckleberry Season I grew up in the West Kootenay and every summer Mom and Dad and us kids would head out and pick huckleberries. Dad had a couple ‘secret’ little spots and there were other places with a few folks and lots of berry bushes. I remember it was hard work but you couldn’t beat the flavour of the berries, especially in one of Mom’s pies. I have been bumping into quite a few folks up in the hills that are berry picking. Usually we just meet on the road somewhere. People are pretty vague with their directions on where you might find some berries. They are pretty awesome so I understand how they feel.

Live at the Horse This week’s ‘Live Music Monday’ performer is ‘Gorden James’. He will be performing at the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium on July 31, from 7 to 9 pm.

James is a top Canadian performer and will keep you very well entertained.

Great Event The ‘Bullriding in the Rockies’ event was insane again this year. It is consistently the biggest event in the valley and is very exciting and entertaining. A great job by the local ladies who rode the flags into the ring. It was nicely done. The bulls and riders put on a fantastic show. There were thirty riders vying for the championship buckle. Mexican poker was a crowd-pleaser. One fellow got hammered pretty good by the bull. Seeing that was worth the price of admission and I think he should get some kind of consolation prize. Thanks to all the organizers and volunteers. It is a huge undertaking. Don’t miss it next year.

Itch Relief Insects, including mosquitoes are thriving in this warm weather. Especially with all the moisture early in the season. Lambert-Kipp Pharmacy has a great product that they make in-store. It is a 3-in-1 itch gel that provides nice relief. Stop in and ask about it.

Tips from the Pro I play a lot but can’t seem to get better? This is pretty common for the avid golfer, to feel like they have hit a plateau and never seem to improve. The first step is to have a closer analysis of your game; where are you losing shots? Is it missed fairways, missed greens, putting, short game, overall consistency? Keeping some stats on a few games is helpful to determine the cause, but the best solution is to get some professional help. A golf professional will help interpret your analysis and give you some ideas on a direction for your game and a plan for your practice. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Fires, Fires Everywhere We all know that there are a lot of fires in British Columbia right now and a few are out of control. But did you know that there have been several in the Southeast Fire District (basically the Kootenays)? We have had 170 fires covering 4,630 hectares, mostly in the high alpine areas. We have an incredible team here, usually beginning with a report from the public, a spotter plane or a Fire Warden. Initial attack crews are quickly dispatched to the scene and often use the assistance of helicopters, tankers, excavators, water tenders and more to get and keep things under control. They do a great job.

More Backroads

District of Invermere Notice to All Dog Owners The weather is warm and we would like to remind you that dogs are not permitted at Kinsmen Beach. If you are in any public area that dogs are permitted we would like to remind you to keep your pets on a leash. The fine for dogs at large is $50.00.

There is some active logging in the valley which means that there are a few loaded logging trucks coming out of the mountains. These guys are incredible drivers that are hauling a lot of weight. Mostly they are in radio contact with each other and are watching for other vehicles. But it is up to the rest of us to be careful and respectful of these trucks. If you see one coming, pull over to the side and let them carry on. Give them as much of the road as possible. Don’t go flying up the roads, racing inside around the blind corners. If you meet someone you don’t have a lot of time to react. Plan on taking it easy. Believe me, the truckers will appreciate your efforts. Every little effort that we put into making anyone’s day a bit easier or better is well worth it.

With the warmer weather upon us we ask that you please remember to be respectful and pick up any dog feces. Please place any of your animal waste in a plastic bag prior to placing in your garbage container.

The photo on page 6 is very relevant right now. It is a B.C. Wildfire Service sign indicating that there is a Fire Ban in effect. This sign is near Dutch Creek.

For dog control issues within the municipality, please contact our Dog Control Officer at 250-342-1707.

It seems that the most important part of discussing the good old days is having a bad memory.

As we now know, plastic is not so fantastic. Up to a trillion plastic bags per year are used around the world. While most of them go to landfill sites where, scientists estimate, takes up to 1,000 years to break down, millions still end up in waterways, trees, and in our oceans where it eventually ends up in stomachs of fish and birds. We encourage you to use biodegradable dog waste bags, which are available at various sites throughout town.

Hydrate It has been very hot out there. Please make sure you are keeping up on fluids for your body. It is important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and the occasional electrolyte type of drink. Try to limit coffee and alcohol as they affect other fluid consumption. As do very sugary drinks. Our bodies love water so just give lots to yours. The sun can be a powerful entity. I suggest some sunscreen at times also.

The Whole World Smiles Laughter is contagious. So is smiling. You can make a huge difference in someone’s day with just a simple smile. So when you are walking along the street and a stranger is approaching you, look them in the eye and give them a smile. You will almost always get one back. You can even bump it up a bit and say “Good morning”. You will find yourself feeling better and you have made them feel better. Try it.

A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca

Chill Out There is a delicious treat at the crossroads. The new ice cream shop, ‘Chill Out’ is open every day at noon and until 9 pm Sunday to Thursday and until 10 pm on Friday and Saturday. Stop in and try one of the many flavours they have available.

Birthdays and Anniversaries I get a few calls from folks who want a birthday listed on page 11. Unfortunately, many of the calls come the same week as the birthday, which is too late to get it into print. Most people love to see their name in print and everyone likes to hear ‘Happy Birthday’ from their friends, so it is nice to be listed in there. So send them in early. List all the birthdays you want published and send them in shortly. They will be put into the database and will show up at the appropriate time. Email rob@valleypeak.ca.

tence. It is up to each of us to think in a more positive way and choose to live a happier life.

Fear of Failure Humans love to succeed, obviously. But what is interesting is that we hate to fail at least twice as much as we love to succeed. This ‘fear of failure’ keeps us from taking risks, even tiny ones. We like to just stay in our safe little boxes and not have to wonder what will happen next. Fortunately, there are a few people out there who consider failing as a learning experience and just keep trying. They are the inventors, champions, leaders and mentors. The rest of us, we are a strange little race of fearful folks.

Conversation I find the most boring people are the ones that keep talking when I want them to listen.

Toxic Thoughts Negativity is a tough thing in today’s society. Our own thought processes can push us into depression. Some common thoughts that are considered toxic are: No one loves me. The World is against me. I don’t deserve it. I don’t love anyone. It’s too late to start over. I’m bored. Life will be better once I am rich and successful. If I follow all the rules, I will have a great life. I don’t need help or advice because I know all I need to know. These are some of the thoughts and attitudes that can lead to a negative exis-

There are really only two rules for success. Never tell all that you know.
