Music on Main This Friday’s ‘Music on Main’ brings the John Jenkins Small Town Revival band to the stage from 7 pm to 9 pm (July 29). It is sponsored by Doug McIntosh.

Music on Main happens every Friday evening in conjunction with the Market on Main (4-9 pm). The market has a great variety of vendors, including food, produce, artisans and more. It all takes place out front of the Visitor Information Centre in Radium.

Sadly, Ray Brydon has passed away. Ray was a man whose heart and soul were put into this community. He and Jan were just recently selected as the ‘Volunteers of the Year’ award. Good people for sure.

Ray was a huge part of the Rockies, the Legion, the Lions and more. He served a couple terms on Council and was part of most community events.

And that is just in the few years I have known Ray. Thank you Ray for the time you spent for and with us. Jan, we are all so very sorry for your loss.

We live so much of our lives within our own tiny little brains. Any number of people can be at the same event and every one of them will have a different opinion of what was happening.

Some people will find fault and flaws in the things that they see. Others will find pleasure and perfection with many highlights.

But they all actually saw the same thing.

They just interpreted it differently depending on their mood at the time, previous experiences or maybe certain expectations.

So we should all try to remember that every person is different. Every journey is different. Every thought process is different. Very seldom will you find someone who is thinking about the same things that you are.

And we all think that we are right in the way we are thinking. And we may be, but someone else may be correct also.

Give people a break. Rather than deciding what you think someone ‘needs to do’, ask yourself what you need to do to help them out. It is a much better system.

Watson’s Waddle During the first few years of my life, I was pretty much tied to the end of a chain during most of the day and night. One young guy would hang out with me a bit after school, but otherwise, it was pretty lonely.

So lonely that I would ‘chat up’ (bark to) anyone or anything that went by. Sometimes my owners would come out and chat back, usually quite loud. “Quiet!” they would bark. “No barking!

Go lay down!” That was actually a fun part of my day. Chatting with my humans. I really don’t know why they kept me.

As it turns out, when Trudi, Rob and Tilley (Matilda) picked me up at the shelter, my history said I only recognized 3 phrases, “Watson, quiet and no barking”.

As it turns out, I know a few more than that. “Come, dinner, let’s go for a walk/ride, good boy, treat, kisses, group hug, go pee” and more. The tone of voice really seems to help. Life has changed.

So this Thursday and Friday nights (and early mornings), July 28 and 29, the Delta Aquarids meteor shower will be at its peak.

In a clear, dark sky, you will be able to see 15-20 shooting stars per hour. It is a bit better in the southern hemisphere but still visible here.

They will actually continue for a couple of weeks so look up whenever you have an opportunity. It is a good preview for the upcoming Perseids shower. Thanks to Bob Ede for the calendar with the dates and highlights of these events (and incredible photos).

Big Bull Show The ‘Bullriding in the Rockies’ event last weekend was a fantastic show. The cowboys and the bulls were happy to put on a great evening for the capacity crowd. Everything was great.

The local girls riding with the flags, the mechanical bull, the live band, Kixxsin, the tender roast beef, the bullfighter (rodeo clown) competition, and of course, the Mexican poker. A couple guys went flying pretty good in that one.

The clowns are amazing as they lead the bulls away from the dismounted cowboys.

A very tricky job.

The other day I had a pretty aggressive driver behind me on the highway. He made some really dangerous passes. The roads were very busy that day.

It reminded me of myself as a youngster (sadly). Tailgating, passing in tight spots, that sort of thing. I survived but I have sure changed my style.

Hang back a bit, go with the flow of traffic, maybe pass the occasional car. I still get everywhere, usually 2, 3 or even 5 minutes later. But with so much less stress for me, my passengers and other drivers.

Artisan Bread Schöni Wood Oven Artisan Breads have been noticeably absent from the Farmers’ Market this season. Many folks got to the market for their bread first and then carry onto discover the rest of the market.

Andi and Suzanna will not be at the market for the rest of this season. They need a bit of recovery time to focus on health.

They are, however, continuing to bake on Fridays. You can order your bread by noon on Tuesday and it will be ready at Circle Health Foods between 2 and 5:30 pm or at their home bakery between 4 and 6 pm.

Long Weekend Wonders Another long weekend is upon us. Many locals will hit the backcountry or go visit friends elsewhere. Others will be in the valley hosting all of our eager guests.

I love this valley. That is why I live here.

Part of it is the amazing people and another part is the amazing natural diversity that is here.

That is also why many folks come here to visit. I get a lot of notes from valley visitors who have had amazing experiences here and a lot of them will be here this weekend.

If you get a chance, add to their experience. Make yourself one of their highlights.

Traumatized Tomatoes I had a couple pretty nice tomato plants that were really healthy a month or so ago.

Trudi’s folks, Graham and Jill had raised them from seeds in their greenhouse.

Then the hail storms attacked. All of the leaves were destroyed and the plants looked like Charlie Brown Christmas trees.

It has been a very long recovery.

The plants have grown back but they are focused on being healthy rather than generating tomatoes. There a couple tiny green balls on there but there is not enough time left in the season to produce a OPEN Tuesday-Sunday 8 am-3 pm
