Campfire Night

Ms. Virginia Rose

Come kick off another season of free, family-friendly fun at Kinsmen Beach with a campfire night this Thursday, July 5, from 5 to 8 pm. Invermere is hosting these “Sun, Sand & Sport” events every Thursday evening throughout the summer, with giant Jenga, games, bubbles and more every week. Come say howdy to your neighbours and make some new friends. Next Thursday will be beach ‘Zumba’ night. Everyone is invited.

Ms. Virginia Rose is a fantastic musician with a great mix of genres and a voice that makes you crave more. She is in the valley this weekend playing at The Station Neighbourhood Pub on Friday, July 6 at 9 pm and at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Saturday at 10:30 pm. Live music is soothing for your soul so get out there folks.

Television Disappointment I wanted to watch the World Origami Championship on TV, but it was only on paper view

Magical and Hypnotic Check out Roger Boucher, magician and hypnotist, as he returns to the Horsethief Creek Pub this coming Wednesday, July 11. He performs two separate shows, a family-friendly magic show at 2 pm and an adult-friendly hypnotist show at 9 pm. This guy is very good at both magic and hypnosis. He is funny and will have your attention start to finish. Do not miss this one.

Board Game Nights Thursday nights are the new board game (and burger and margarita) nights this summer, starting this Thursday, July 5, from 5 to 8 pm. The game pros from Main Street Fun & Games will have a wide selection of their best new board games on hand at Scotty Burger. Have you played Happy Salmon? Battle Sheep? It’s time. Bring a friend and $5/ person, and remember how much fun a night of board games can be. Also, did I mention margaritas and amazing burgers?

Enjoy I hope you enjoy this week’s issue of The Valley Peak. Thanks to Heather McLeod for all her work and writing.

So this bone marrow cancer and kidney failure thing brings a lot of changes to my life. One that I never really considered is how handsome they have apparently made me. We all want to ‘look good’ and it feels great when someone tells us that we look nice. I think it is important to compliment people and make a difference in their days so I often tell folks they look good. People have a lot of perceptions about disease, especially cancer. In our minds it is basically a death sentence and for many folks it really is. For me included, but not on a quick, short-term basis as long as I manage it as well as possible. So I am not there yet, not even close. For someone going through this, I am doing quite well and to many folks, I just seem normal. But nearly everyone I see tells me that I look good. It is a nice compliment and I thank them for it as they are sincere and mean well. But nobody told me that before my diagnosis so now I always question the compliment (in my brain silently). Do I look better than I used to and I have finally made it to the ‘good’ category? Haha. That would be awesome. But no, I guess I look good compared to what people expect me to look like because of the cancer. I so still have a little bit of hair and some colour. Just remember that everyone’s journey is different. We all take a different route through life and we all deal with it much differently.

Watson’s Waddle So last week I mentioned that Jen at Kootenay Kritters has been getting me out for some exercise. I would like to elaborate on that a bit. You will notice her ad is right beside this column every week as she is fantastic for dogs. Anyways, she loves me (everyone does really and she loves all dogs) so she is happy to spend time with me. She knows Rob is a bit weak and tired and very slow to get going in the mornings so she tries to show up every day, sometimes twice to get me out for a good walk. She takes me to some fun places and I meet lots of other dogs (and people). I have started to really look forward to her little car rides. I also enjoy staying with her when Rob is away overnight. I have to be careful in front of Rob though. He has to know that I love him the most so sometimes I try to play a bit reluctant when Jen wants to take me for a quick walk near the house. I get barking and tail-wagging, but not walking. It is quite amusing really. And sometimes I just want to stay by Rob’s side. But yes, a huge thanks to Jen at Kootenay Kritters for really stepping up and helping Rob and I with many things. She loves to care for Kritters of all shapes and sizes.

Kidney Failure

Magic Show 2 pm Hypnotist 9 pm Horsethief Creek Pub Wednesday, July 11

At this point I have settled in to doing home peritoneal dialysis with the manual twin bag system. It takes a bit of time with four ‘exchanges’ each day. An exchange is a 35 minute process of replacing the used peritoneal fluid with new stuff. The ‘dwell’ time is how long the fluid stays in me. Dwell time is about 3 or 4 hours for three of the exchanges and then a long dwell (different solution is added) that lasts 12 to 16 hours. If I do my exchanges during the night, then I get my days free. With a little nap involved. And really, I am so fortunate to be able to do this and manage it to suit my lifestyle. I am making lots of adjustments but it really is much better than the trips to Cranbrook for hemodialysis. So yeah, kidney failure. I never thought it would happen to me and had no idea what it really was. Not even a consideration, like everyone really. It is a daily learning experience and I enjoy making it a weekly one for you.

Side Effects It is all pretty repetitive for me now. I seem to have adjusted to most of the side effects. Being extremely aware of balance issues is very important. Balance seems to affect my golf swing quite a bit. The main issue for me these days is just the weak and tired thing. Any dog walk we do I must make sure I will have the energy to get back to the start. I also find it difficult to lift or carry heavy objects (had to get help with a water bottle at the store the other day-it was mentally devastating). I pray that my strength will return after chemo ends. A great side effect is all the love and compassion from the people of this valley. Lots of folks seem to care and check on my well -being quite regularly. When I focus properly, I see a million blessings coming at me on a daily basis.

Airline Troubles I showed the damaged remains of my luggage to my lawyer and said: “I want to sue the airline.” He shook his head. “You don’t have much of a case.”

Yes, these days of electronics and social media can be a challenge. They can be a good thing but sometimes not. One challenge can be going on a vacation to the Columbia Valley and find out the charging cord for your mobile, tablet or laptop is at home. Well, I know a great place to look for a replacement. How about checking out the Invermere Thrift Store? They have a section just for these items. A great thing about social media is finding a bargain. So not much has really changed for me with the multiple myeloma and chemo. Now that I am being treated in Cranbrook I have to deal with an oncologist from Kelowna. We meet by teleconference this week. Hopefully he can give me an idea about my actual progress. As of this week, I only have 11 more hits of chemo and only have to go to town for 8 of them. That is exciting news for me. I believe that I will regain quite a bit of energy once my body clears the chemo out. That will be after September. In the meantime I have been able to get out and try golfing a bit. I am pretty weak so the ball isn’t flying as far as I would like but at least I am out there. Plus I have caught a few fish. Basically it is all about getting back to my ‘normal’ lifestyle. I need to be happy and enjoying myself on a regular basis or I question why I am where I am. This has been a setback but definitely not quite a finisher at this point.

When interviewed 100,000 cancer survivors were asked why they thought they have survived cancer. The top 9 answers were documented in a book ‘Radical Remission’. It is a long, boring read. But it tells me this: radically changing your diet to eat healthy foods is the number one answer. Your food can be your nutrition or it can be your poison. It is between you and your taste buds to decide. To me, more importantly is the second strongest answer: taking charge of your own health. That means doing research into what your doctors are telling you and making sure it is right for you, It also means finding alternatives that may work for you. It feels great to have an idea of what is happening and to feel that you have input.

Tariffs What is another name for tariffs? Taxes. What would be a fantastic way for 2 leaders to increase their tax bases? Get together and tax the crap out of each other’s countries. Who pays those tariffs? We do. Who gets the money? Our governments do. Just another way to screw the people while trying to give the appearance of helping the country. Is there such a thing as a government that actually cares about the people or do they all just want to dictate and control everyone? All our governments kick the crap out of us financially while they party down with their rich friends. Our country is full of hard workers that are supporting a bunch of political dictators and freeloaders. Oops, a bit negative there.

Monday nights are movie nights in Invermere for the summer months. Head on down to Pothole Park for an outdoor screening every Monday, featuring Robin Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire” on July 9. A cash concession is available, or bring your own favourite movie snacks. A blanket and/or lawn chair is a good plan also and be prepared for the odd mosquito. The big screen lights up after sunset (around 9:30-10 pm in July). Cheers to the District for putting on this great community event. It is an amazing way to fill an evening with friends and family.

Annual Motorcycle Rally The Horsethief Hideout Memorial Rally is on this weekend, from July 5 to 8. This age 19+ event is one of the best old-school motorcycle rallies around, with live bands, a show & shine, a silent auction and door prizes, a poker run and bike games. They have great food and product vendors, karaoke every evening and an incredible live music party on the Saturday night. It is a good event to check out. Admission for the weekend is $80 at the gate, which includes camping. Bring cash. It’s quite the sight to see all those bikes in the valley over the weekend.

HOW ARE YOU SLEEPING?

The photo on page 6 shows a great place to be on a Friday evening all summer. It is from the Music and Market on Main, always a delightful time.

DEEP ENOUGH? LONG ENOUGH?

Host an International Student You can teach your family about other countries and cultures without ever leaving town just by hosting an international exchange student for the 2018-2019 school year. Youngsters from 13 to 18 years old want to call our beautiful valley home for a while. These kids come from Germany, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, China and beyond. Host families receive $735 monthly to help cover expenses. For more information, email the Rocky Mountain International Student Program at info@rminternational.ca or go online. I know families that have done this and it’s a win-win for everyone involved.

Stolen It is so hard to explain a pun to a kleptomaniac. They always take things, literally.

So I mentioned these folks as an alternative health program for cancer and many other ailments in last week’s issue. Since then I have visited their dental and health clinics in Calgary. It was an amazing experience. During this journey most doctors have been very aloof yet controlling. This was a completely different feel. They listened, they made adjustments according to what is going on, and they cared. Really. It is amazing what a difference just that feeling makes. They will be there to monitor things when chemo is done and that is very comforting as well. They definitely want me to live a long life.

Saturday, July 7 is World Chocolate Day. That sounds pretty yummy. ‘Gimme Some Sugar’ definitely makes incredible chocolates. I can’t even really describe them other than they have been awesome gifts for family at Christmas, Valentines and Easter. I always buy extra for myself and my Mom and sister rave about theirs for quite some time. Try the chocolate covered sponge toffee. Melt in your mouth delicious.

Canada Day Thanks Thanks to everyone involved in making the Columbia Valley the place to be for Canada Day. Every community had some wonderful things happening. In Invermere, the parade, the Mountain Mosaic festival and the fireworks all really stand out. I hope everyone had a great time and I hope you all appreciate the volunteer efforts to put these things together.

Food for Thought The roaming lion came across a man reading a book sitting with another man working on a typewriter. Why did he eat the guy with the book? Even lions know Readers’ Digest and writer’s cramp.

Stalker I think my neighbour is stalking me. Last night she googled my name on the computer. I saw her do it with my binoculars.
