HIKE FOR HOSPICE SUNDAY, JUNE 16 K2 RANCH

One of the saddest things I see posted on Facebook every day is something about how you can never count on others to return your favours or care about you like you care about them. How do you feel about that? Do you feel that every time you help someone out, they owe you a return favour? Is that how the world should work? My feelings are pretty much the opposite of that. I think it is important to just help people out. All day, every day. Every chance you get. That is why we are here. To make others feel better. If you think that people owe you favours, then you have this little sense of entitlement and will nearly always be disappointed. You will have a lot of negativity in your life. The actions of others should not determine your happiness. That is your job. I will finish with this note. For many years I have really tried to just help anyone, whether it was a physical act or just a statement of support. It all makes a difference. And then I was sick, very sick. And so many of you have stepped up and helped. You have literally saved my life and are still making it liveable. Some of you are folks I have never even met. Any good thing I have ever done has come back to me a hundred times. Thank you.

Deep in Thought If you are having second thoughts, you are two ahead of most people.

Watson’s Waddle I enjoy mornings. It is quite the show all night with pumps and alarms going from Rob’s dialysis machine but the mornings are quite peaceful. We often nap for a couple hours once the dialysis is done. Then Rob is up and getting organized while I continue to nap. It is great. He will walk by once in a while and give me a little rub. That feels great. Then when it is time for me to actually get up, he gives me a fantastic massage. I’m getting old and he can really loosen up my legs and shoulders before I have to move around too much. It is a pretty good deal for me. When I do get up, breakfast is sitting in my bowl. Kind of a boring, dry dog food. My morning treat? Some milk may fall into the bowl for added flavor and moisture. I love that flavour. And then a nice walk, a bit of bathrooming, maybe a little dog treat and our day is well on its way. Hopefully we will meet many people and their dogs today. It is wonderful to feel loved and to offer your love back. Oh, and Happy Birthday to Rob this week.

My sister sent me some information on foods that help to fight cancer. Things such as avocados, leafy greens, legumes and more. The list had about 15 items on it and they all made sense. We are largely in charge of our health with what we eat. My problem is that half of the items listed are on the restricted food list for kidney disease. Some are high in potassium and others are high in phosphorous, two elements that are normally removed from your blood by your kidneys As a matter of fact, they are important elements for most people but very bad for those with kidney issues. High potassium leads to a heart attack and high phosphorous leads to mental issues, itchiness, etc. Kidney failure is a tough run for the rest of your life. You become very highmaintenance. Keeping things running is a challenge that I don’t wish upon any one of you.

Numbers They say the number of cod in the ocean has really dropped. Clearly they have taken a battering.

My Progress I have had a great addition to my health program lately. I was able to get a hospital bed moved into my dialysis room. It has really made a difference in positioning for dialysis so I get a lot less alarms going off and the machine runs much smoother. The bed also allows me to move more towards nocturnal dialysis where I get most of the work done overnight. That would free me up for some more daytime activities. My cancer progress is a bit vague still. I meet with my oncologist this Friday (teleconference) to find out what my bloodwork is showing. I have been able to see some of my results and they are quite excellent, a good sign, but there are still a couple numbers to come through. Right now I am feeling pretty good and that is half the battle. Is it the cannabis? The vitamin D? Lemon juice? Faith and prayer? Healthier eating? New fillings? Omega 3s? Or is it just attitude? I believe it must be a combination of all of these things. My cancer was quite advanced, having destroyed my kidneys prior to diagnosis, but now it seems to continue to recede. I will know for sure at the end of the week but I am feeling pretty good about it.

Enlightened I find mind-readers very annoying. You would think they know that.

World Blood Donor Day This Friday, June 14 is World Blood Donor Day. I for one, really appreciate folks who donate blood. I received 5 units of blood during the low point of my journey. And I really needed them or I would not be writing this article right now. So if you are ever in a position to donate blood, please do it. And thank you so much to the folks that already do it. You never really know who’s life you will be saving.

I live quite the roller coaster of emotions. It is very hard to describe and very hard to deal with. Life is great if I focus on all the blessings I have received since this all began. I have been a lot luckier than many people. I have quite the advantage being able to write about my needs. Often when I sit back and reflect on all of that, I will break out into tears. Life can also really suck when I think about all the things that have gone wrong through this. Of course there are a lot of ‘Why me?’ thoughts racing through my head. Especially when something new pops up. Then I remember, ‘Why not me?’ and realize that this is just the way it is and I have to do my best to get through it. Often that will bring a flood of tears. Yes it is super exciting for me to still be alive and almost ‘thriving’ but it is super depressing planning knowing that tomorrow I need to spend 6 hours dealing with a dialysis machine and once I start, there is no going anywhere. Today I am off dialysis but it is a long day connected to another machine, my computer for writing The Valley Peak. Enjoy as much of your time as you can.

Things are Pretty Dry Obviously forest fires are a prime concern in British Columbia again this year. Things are pretty dry so far. We see enough fires caused by lightning to keep the crews busy so please don’t contribute to the problem. Keep your campfires attended and small (under 50 cm by 50 cm) with an extinguishing device (bucket of water, shovel) nearby. Respect the beauty of where we live.

Many electronic devices only need a quick reset when they quit working. Often this just means unplugging them for a few minutes. It is the same with humans. We get pretty busy and involved in our lives and our brains and body begin to struggle. Try a quick ‘unplug’. Get off your devices and take some time in nature. A walk, a swim, a bike ride, a nice backroads drive or anything like that. I am pretty lucky with Watson dragging me out for walks every day.

I love watching storms roll into the valley. I have an incredible view to the north from my deck. Right now I can see that Radium is engulfed by a storm system that is headed this way. The wind is really picking up here. I especially love watching the lightning when we have a thunderstorm. I have not seen any yet this season but it is easy to tell that it is coming soon. Maybe even within this current system rolling in. Watson is not as big a fan of thunderstorms as I am. He tends to huddle on the bathroom floor near the toilet.

The more we contribute each year the better they become. I must add that they are always amazing. I usually watch from the area near the arena above where they launch them. Exxtra Writing As if it wasn’t tough enough before to fill The Valley Peak. With summer approaching I fill the last few ad spaces. Page 8 switches over to fresh weekly ads and copy. That means I have to write an extra page to fill the paper. And that means you have to read the odd paragraph of drivel like this. Enjoy.

Facebook Page The Valley Peak has a new Facebook page. It offers an updated events calendar for the Columbia Valley. You can do a quick check on what is happening today and in the future (spooky eh?). Anyways, like us on Facebook and keep up with the times.

The Invermere Legion is again in charge of the Canada Parade in Invermere. This is the perfect opportunity for any business or organization to get seen by the public. Thousands of people, both locals and visitors line the streets to see the floats go by. Check out the ad on page 3 for information regarding the rules for float entries. It is always fun to be part of the parade and part of the community.

Where I Was The photo on age 6 is a reminder of how lucky I am. A year ago golf was pretty doubtful for me but things are much better today. There are lots of beautiful course around here.

Be good to your father. He has done a lot for you. Of course we don’t all have perfect fathers and we sometimes wonder why they say or do certain things, but always remember that he had his best intentions for you at all times. I had a great father (a great family actually). He helped mold me into who I am today. We spent a lot of time together working, walking, playing, learning, talking and more. We both enjoyed the times very much. This Sunday, June 16 is Father’s Day. Do your best to show Dad you care.

Prosthetics My niece once dated a gentleman with a wooden leg but after a while she had to break it off.

Feel Better I go through a lot of days where I really dislike my life. A self-pity party is always available at my place. I have found something that helps pull me out of a negative mental state. Help someone else. Or think about how you can help someone else. It is amazing how quickly that can make you feel better. Just helping.

Sweet for the Heat Chill Out has more than 30 flavours of ice cream, including gluten and lactose free or vegan options. Stop in any day of the week for some tasty treats.

Movies in the Mountains The Monday Night Movies at Pothole Park are back again this year. Every Monday at darkness we can view a free outdoor movie on the big screen. It starts on July 1, with ‘Wayne’s World’.

Fancy Father’s Meal

Job Opportunities

What are you doing with your dad on Father’s Day? There are many options in the valley. One great option is to head up to Citadella restaurant in Radium. They offer authentic Hungarian cuisine over an incredible view of the Radium area. Try the stroganoff or goulash and you will be impressed. Enjoy filet mignon, chicken cordon bleu or other European specialties. The sample plate is amazing and you can try nearly everything. They are offering 15% off your meal on Father’s Day. Just take a copy of the ad on page 9 with you for the deal. Enjoy. It is awesome food.

Summer is pretty much here and with it comes a lot of job opportunities. Most retailers and restaurants are looking for staff for the next couple of months or so. It works great for summer students. But it is also a chance for those looking for permanent work to get their feet in the door. Get a job and be a responsible, respectful, dependable employee who makes a difference in your workplace and it could lead to something long term. Or at least give you an idea of what you enjoy doing. I hope all the employees and employers match up nicely this summer for a great year.

Bear Day

Consider the Invermere Curling Centre as a venue for your next event. During the summer, the ice surface area holds up to 600 people. The upstairs lounge will hold 120 folks quite easily and is a very nice spot. Call 250-342-3315 for more information.

Bears are a part of life in our valley. Come celebrate these amazing animals and learn how to keep bears wild and stay safe at Bear Day in Cenotaph Park on Saturday, June 15, from 10 am to 1 pm. The event is hosted by Wildsight and offers free, family-friendly activities. Chat with wildlife experts, learn about our bear neighbours, and get hands-on bear spray lessons. Not 100% sure what to do if you run into a bear? This one’s for you.

Beautiful Town One of my favourite things about the summers in Invermere is the flower beds. The District team does a wonderful job of beautifying the town. It is great seeing all the brilliant colours on the street corners. I really like that people are invited to pick the flowers at the end of the season. That is a nice touch.
