Free Golf (for Dad)

Radium Days

A lot of dads enjoy golf. I know that mine really did. Coys Par 3 at Dutch Creek near Fairmont is offering free golf for dads on Father’s Day with the purchase of a breakfast buffet or a burger. Coys burgers are pretty amazing and the breakfast buffet will be just as incredible. All of their food is fabulous. Reservations are recommended for Father’s Day. 250-345-6504.

Radium is the place to be this Saturday, June 16, with a full day of free, fun activities planned in celebration of Radium Days. Watch the parade at 10 am, then head to Legend’s Field for family-friendly fun, including vendors, a kidz zone, the BritsBest Car Show and food fresh from the Radium Rotary Club’s BBQ. The unofficial after party starts up at 10 pm when the Voodoo Rhythm Kings take to the stage at the Horsethief Creek Pub. Next year, Radium Days will be celebrated at Radium’s new community hall.

Retirement I know a lot of jokes about retired people, but none of them work.

Fire Hall Open House Wannabe firefighters of all ages are invited to the Invermere Fire Hall on Friday, June 15, from 6:30 pm to 9 pm for an open house. Check out the fire trucks and enjoy a free BBQ, plus demonstrations of the water hose and Jaws of Life. HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

One of the saddest things I see posted on Facebook every day is something about how you can never count on others to return your favours or care about you like you care about them. How do you feel about that? Do you feel that every time you help someone out, they owe you a return favour? Is that how the world should work? My feelings are pretty much the opposite of that. I think it is important to just help people out. All day, every day. Every chance you get. That is why we are here. To make others feel better. If you think that people owe you favours, then you have this little sense of entitlement and will nearly always be disappointed. You will have a lot of negativity in your life. The actions of others should not determine your happiness. That is your job. I will finish with this note. For many years I have really tried to just help anyone, whether it was a physical act or just a statement of support. It all makes a difference. And then I was sick, very sick. And so many of you have stepped up and helped. You have literally saved my life and are still making it liveable. Some of you are folks I have never even met. Any good thing I have ever done has come back to me a hundred times. Thank you.

Nice Wife When I married ‘Miss Right’, I had no idea her first name was Always.

THE BEST VALUE AND MOST EFFECTIVE ADVERTISING IN THE VALLEY THE VALLEY PEAK

I enjoy mornings. It is quite the show all night with alarms going from Rob’s dialysis machine but the mornings are quite peaceful. We often nap for a couple hours once the dialysis is done. Then Rob is up and getting organized while I continue to nap. It is great. He will walk by once in a while and give me a little rub. That feels great. Then when it is time for me to actually get up, he gives me a fantastic massage. I’m getting old and he can really loosen up my legs and shoulders before I have to move around too much. It is a pretty good deal for me. When I do get up, breakfast is sitting in my bowl. Kind of a boring, dry dog food. My morning treat? Some milk may fall into the bowl for added flavor and moisture. I love that. And then a nice walk, a bit of bathrooming, maybe a little dog treat and our day is well on its way. Hopefully we will meet many people and their dogs today. It is wonderful to feel loved and to offer your love back.

What Country Am I? WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED TIRES ON RIMS.

I am a land-locked country in Southern Africa. I am neighbours with Congo, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Botswana, Angola, Mozambique, Malawi and Namibia. My capital city is Lusaka and most of my population lives near there. My people speak 73 different languages but English is the official one. I am considered a ‘Christian’ country but similar to Canada, we have many denominations and traditions. Copper mining and agriculture have been my main economic providers. Football, rugby and cricket are my main sports. Maize is my main staple diet. What Country am I? See page 9.

Kidney Failure

RADIUM DAYS SATURDAY, JUNE 16 PARADE AT 10 AM

So things have settled out a bit in my life. Back in Invermere trying to adjust to night time peritoneal dialysis. I am enjoying the freedom during the day and have actually fished a couple of times but the thing is still kicking the crap out of me at night. Lots of alarms and lots of awake time. I have a lady coming up to check it all out on Wednesday. Hopefully she can help me figure it out. I met with my family doctor this week. We haven’t seen each other in a long time and had lots of catching up to do. She has been following my progress quite closely. It was a nice session. We are still showing no signs of kidney recovery so it is just carry on as is and see what happens.

It’s All Relative Any room is a panic room if you’ve lost your keys in it.

Dad’s Cool Cake Who loves ice cream? Mostly everyone. How about Dairy Queen ice cream cakes? Very yummy. Dads love ice cream cakes. The sweet ice cream, filled with chocolate crumbles and an amazing soft chocolate fudge. Wow. Dairy Queen has some talented cake people there. Go check out the options for a custom designed cake or you can pick up a regular one on Father’s Day.

This is a great program leading to many job opportunities.

So my chemo has been transferred to Cranbrook and I have to go there every Tuesday morning at 9 am until the end of September. That is all working out great. It starts tomorrow for me. The ward in Cranbrook is headed by the Kelowna Oncology Ward. Kelowna has a team of 4 doctors who specialize in my type of cancer so it should be a good run. Although they are suggesting I go on an additional medication. A 2-hour infusion (IV) of a drug that is supposed to maybe help prevent my bones from breaking down. Of course the side effects include kidney damage, nausea, fever, et cetera. As I am still trying to recover my kidneys and I am showing no signs of bone issues, I will be refusing that drug. They say that being informed and taking charge of your health care are the best ways to survive an illness. I strongly believe that.

Fuel the Fireworks The Canada Day fireworks in Invermere are incredible. People come from all over just to watch the beautiful colours explode over the lake. It is always very loud and very exciting. Add to the fireworks all of the boats and their lights positioning on the lake. It is quite the show. The fireworks are quite a costly adventure. The Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley put it all together every year and count on our donations to make it happen. Please make a contribution whenever you have a chance. Place money in the coin boxes you see in local businesses or contact the Kinsmen.

Thursday, June 21 is the summer solstice for 2018. This is the day that the Sun reaches its northernmost peak from the Equator. It is actually directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. The northern hemisphere experiences the longest day (most daylight) of the year. Unfortunately, the days get shorter from here on in. Within the Arctic Circle, they experience 24 hours of sunlight on this day while in the Southern Hemisphere everything is the opposite (shortest day, start of winter, etc.).

That is indeed a great honor. IHCAS was recognized for operating the Invermere Thrift Store which we all know is the best place to shop for a bargain. Since 2017 the Thrift Store has provided donations of over $200,000 to multiple organizations here in the valley. This has happened by 170 volunteers/ members logging in over 28,000 hours. Money from the Thrift Store has helped Interior Health, Stars, Columbia Valley Centre, East Kootenay Health and more.

Similar to many people, I had a wonderful father. John (Jack) Darrel Dunn. He stormed the beaches of Normandy and he stormed Canada with his engineering degree (he actually worked on the Avro Arrow). Jack was great. He was very strict with the rules around the house but also very quick to do anything for family and friends. He taught us all about the values of life, honesty, fairness, happiness, etc. He spent time with each of us, teaching us what family and love meant. I miss my father but I greatly appreciate who he was and everything that he did for me and others. I have many great memories of our times together. Downtown Invermere 250-342-9661

The Invermere Legion is again in charge of the Canada Day Parade in Invermere. This is the perfect opportunity for any business or organization to get seen by the public. Thousands of people, both locals and visitors line the streets to see the floats go by. Check out the ad on page 9 for information regarding the rules for float entries. It is always fun to be part of the parade and part of the community.

The photo on page 6 shows one of our conservation officers as he displays a couple of bear skulls and talks about this amazing species. Bear Day is this Saturday, June 16 at Pothole Park from noon until 3 pm.

Board Volunteers Needed If you’re interested in supporting programs and services for those with developmental disabilities and might want to volunteer some time to a working board, give Donna Jefferson a shout at wdsss@shaw.ca. The Windermere District Social Service Society is looking for candidates to appoint to their board of directors.

Twobogganing “Tommy, you promised you would share your new sled with your brother,” said Mom. “I am sharing,” replied Tommy. He plays with it coming up the hill and I play with it going down”.

Unplug It Many electronic devices only need a quick reset when they quit working. Often this just means unplugging them for a bit. It is the same with humans. We get pretty busy and involved in our lives and our brains and body begin to struggle. Try a quick ‘unplug’. Get off your devices and take some time in nature. A walk, a swim, a bike ride, a nice backroads drive or anything like that. I am pretty lucky with Watson dragging me out for walks every day.

Alternative Medicines I saw an interesting article the other day. It was referring to natural remedies for health issues. The summary was that herbs and natural remedies are not ‘Alternative Medicines’. That is just what we have been taught to believe. Herbs and natural remedies are the ‘Original Medicines’ that the pharmaceutical companies are trying to copy.

Live Music

4-7-8

Check out the Horsethief Creek Pub for some great live music. This Saturday, June 16 brings the Voodoo Rhythm Kings at 10 pm as an afterparty for Radium Days. Then on Monday, June 18 from 7 to 9 pm, anyone can get involved with the fantastic ‘Open Mic’ nights. The musicians are very welcoming and talented so it is always a great evening.

This is a breathing technique that will help you fall asleep at night. Get into bed and into a relaxed position. Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Breathe out through your mouth for 8 seconds. Repeat this cycle a couple of times. This will trigger a natural response in your body that you are at rest by lowering your oxygen intake. Your heart rate will slow down substantially right away. You can actually feel it happening. Try not to take a deep breath as you will want to. I find myself lying there thinking ‘this is kind of hokey’. And then I find myself waking up a few hours later.

Quality Control Thanks to everyone who picks up and enjoys The Valley Peak every week. It has been a few months of pretty intense work trying to keep the paper going while dealing with my health issues. These recent weeks have been really tough with all the trips to the hospital, travelling to Invermere and the time spent doing home dialysis. Thank heaven for Heather, my co-writer. Heads up to my clients as I have fallen well behind in my invoicing so it will be catch-up time for that. I am sorry for any of the information or events that I have missed or given misinformation.

Enjoy the Outdoors

There are a lot of incredible places to see in this valley. I love getting out into the bush for any type of adventure. I want all the places that I see to remain magnificent. That is why I pack out what I pack in. I do not leave a mess anywhere. It is just not right. Please strive to leave every place that you visit a bit nicer than when you arrived. It is a great system.

Let’s Break the Record The Westside Legacy Trail is about to become world famous, and you can help make that happen. Join 249 other folks on Saturday, June 16 as they attempt to break the Guinness World Record for longest conga line -- on roller skates. Reserve your size by emailing lianne.lang@greenways.ca. You get to keep the skates after the event. If you’re not quite coordinated enough to brave the conga line, come on down anyway and bring your camera: I’m sure this will be a sight to remember.

Cold Dairy Did you hear the rumour about frozen butter? I’ll tell you, but you can’t spread it.

Wildfires As most of you have seen or heard, we already have a pretty good wildfire burning up above White Swan Lake. It is in some rough timber and terrain so it is a tough one to knock down. Please remember how volatile things can quickly get. It has been a dry season so far. Some rain in June can make a huge difference. Be careful with your fires. Follow the rules plus listen to and respect the officers that are trying to protect our beautiful valley.
