Summer Solstice Tuesday, June 20 is the summer solstice for 2016. This is the day that the Sun reaches its northernmost peak from the Equator. It is actually directly above the Tropic of Capricorn. The northern hemisphere experiences the longest day (most daylight) of the year. Unfortunately, the days get shorter from here on in. Within the Arctic Circle, they experience 24 hours of sunlight on this day while in the Southern Hemisphere everything is the opposite (shortest day, start of winter)

The Class of 2017 is pretty much done! A couple of exams left here and there, but overall, all over. I hope you have all enjoyed the past years and are looking forward to making your mark on the world. Some of you will head out to some great high-paying jobs and some will seek fame and fortune. Please remember this: you will find a lot more happiness helping and serving other folks than you will by being self-serving. Fame comes from what you do for others, not what you do to others to serve yourself. Enjoy your future. It is under your control.

LONG DRIVE COMPETITION FAIRMONT AIRPORT FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 4-8 PM
I read an incredible sentence the other day. ‘All that I desire is to do what is for the good of all’. That is quite the unselfish statement. Is it even possible to choose to do what is best for everyone? The World would be a pretty good place to live if everyone thought that way. But unfortunately, we pretty much place ourselves before and above everyone and everything else. I believe that is one of the reasons that society is so off-balance. There are huge differences in the classes out there. Multibillionaires with so much money that they could never spend it and people with so little that they cannot even afford a piece of bread. And once you are down, it is a tough climb back up. You need to give more and more money to the rich to survive. It is hard to consider sharing with everyone, especially when you consider yourself ‘better’ than many of the others. But it would be quite the World if it was happening. Everyone does have something to offer but for some folks, they feel so devalued that they don’t believe it themselves. So if you can afford it, try a random act of kindness. Buy someone a lunch or something and see how that feels.
Resolutions Lately I have been reading a lot about the perils of drinking and smoking. My next resolution will be to quit reading.

The Invermere Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market started up this past weekend. It will be running every Saturday, from 9 am to 1 pm in downtown Invermere. There are a lot of incredible vendors again this year. I actually set my alarm on Saturdays so I can get down there before it gets too busy. This year they have added live music at the Cenotaph. The Ramblers will be playing this Saturday, June 17, from 10 am to 1 pm. It is a nice addition to the market. Get down to the market and support some small businesses with their ventures. While you are there stop into some of the great stores in our downtown area. You just may find some incredible things.

I have had a great week. We are pretty settled into the new place and it is on a pretty quiet street. This gives me a bit more freedom to hang around outside. Plus the deck goes most of the way around the house so I can check out a lot of things. We got out fishing for a day. I love the feeling of laying on the boat, rocking gently in the water. It is very soothing and very exhausting. We are doing lots of walks near water. I have been enjoying wading out there a bit but I am not that interested in swimming. It is crazy watching some of the other dogs head out into the water. Brave souls. The water does feel great on a warm day though. I really appreciate that Rob and I get out of the house lots. Mondays are quiet as I have to do this writing but we still get out a couple of times. I feel sorry for all the dogs tied up or locked inside during this wonderful weather. I hope they all get out for lots of good walks with their families.

Unplug It Many electronic devices only need a quick reset when they quit working. Often this just means unplugging them for a few minutes. It is the same with humans. We get pretty busy and involved in our lives and our brains and body begin to struggle. Try a quick ‘unplug’. Get off your devices and take some time in nature. A walk, a swim, a bike ride, a nice backroads drive or anything like that. I am pretty lucky with Watson dragging me out for walks every day.

Similar to many people, I had a wonderful father. John (Jack) Darrel Dunn. He stormed the beaches of Normandy and he stormed Canada with his engineering degree (he actually worked on the Avro Arrow). Jack was great. He was very strict with the rules around the house but also very quick to do anything for family and friends. He taught us all about the values of life, honesty, fairness, happiness, etc. He spent time with each of us, teaching us what family and love meant and now I have a chance to do the same with a couple of teenage ‘daughters’. I miss my father but I greatly appreciate who he was and everything that he did for me and others. I have many great memories of our times together.

I have said it before and I will say it again! I love fireworks! The Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley sponsors the Canada Day fireworks every year. They are held at the start of Canada Day, 12:01 am the previous evening. That will be the Thursday night this year. The fireworks are launched from just below the arena so they can be seen from most places around Windermere Lake. The bank beside the arena is a fantastic viewing area. You will love it. Remember that the fireworks cost a lot of money. It is up to all of us to help cover those costs. Donate to the Kinsmen Club. You can put money in the change drop boxes in several businesses in Invermere and you can donate directly by talking to Steve at 250-342-2445.

The photo on page 6 shows a lot of folks dressed in white. It is from last year’s Soiree en Blanc. I wonder where it will be held this year.

Dutch Creek Cleaners This mother and daughter team does a great job with their cleaning services. They did my place after my move out and I am impressed. It was a big job (I’m not much of a cleaner). Perfect Time of Year As I often mention, I love the night sky. This time of year it is just so beautiful. The sunsets are vividly colourful on both sides of the valley. Then things darken around us as the sunlight disappears. The light lingers in the sky for a while as the first bright stars appear. Then you begin to see the constellations, as they are usually pretty bright, and the sky darkens still. Until millions of stars appear. Everywhere. It is hard to fathom the vastness and the number of ‘suns’, ‘planets’ and more that are flying around out there.
Business Note
The Radium Public Library has drop in crafts for children during regular hours. Help decorate their windows.
Cool Down It is hot out these days and staying cool is nice. I love to get into the lake once or twice a day, even with just my feet. It is very relieving. Growing up, I remember how Mom used to keep the house a bit cooler. She was up early, opening all the windows to let in the

Sports Parenting “I love to watch you play” is the best sentence you could ever say to your kid about sports. Not “I love when you score a goal” or “That was a great win”. We all want to see our child score a goal and win every game. But that is not a realistic expectation for our children and it puts an incredible amount of pressure on the kids. You are the person they want to impress and you don’t want them to think that it takes a winning goal to impress you. They need to know that you love them regardless of the game’s outcome and regardless of their performance. They say that 70% of kids quit a sport by the age of 14 because they are no longer having fun with it.

Summer is pretty much here and with it comes a lot of job opportunities. Most retailers and restaurants are looking for staff for the next couple of months or so. It works great for summer students. But it is also a chance for those looking for permanent work to get their feet in the door. Get a job and be a responsible, respectful, dependable employee who makes a difference in your workplace and it could lead to something long term. Or at least give you an idea of what you enjoy doing. I hope all the employees and employers match up nicely this summer for a great year. From a funeral director. “Business is really bad but at least no one died.”
