Canal Days

Roaring Fun

This weekend is a huge bunch of events happening in Canal Flats. Canal Days celebrates the community spirit of ‘The Flats’, and they have lots of spirit. There are way too many events to list here but you can Google it and get a full schedule of events. Highlights include the Keg River Race on Friday and the Bed Races and Duct Tape Boat Races on Sunday. Saturday, June 3 will be crazy with activities, beginning with a pancake breakfast at 8 am, a parade at 11 am and fireworks at 11 pm. Enjoy a car show, baseball, bean bag and horseshoe tournaments, beer gardens, logging show, live music, the CU Express Train and more. Lots more is happening during the evening including spaghetti dinner, karaoke, more games and contests. Everyone is invited to visit the community for a great weekend.

The ‘Fun Day at Coys’ Golf Tournament is this Saturday, June 3. It is a fundraiser for the Fairmont Lions Club. This year’s funds will go to the Westside Legacy Trail. This event is often sold out so get a hold of them immediately to get entered. This is always a fantastic fun day at a great golf venue that includes 9 holes of golf and a mouth-watering barbecue meal afterwards. The cost is only $30 for golf and the meal, an incredible deal. Just the meal will be $15. There are two shotgun tee times, noon and 2:30 pm, and groups will have up to 8 golfers in them. Just a bit more fun that way. You must pre-register at Coys Par 3, 250345-6504.

Gardening I think that some stranger is adding soil to my garden, but I’m not sure who. The plot thickens.

Stay in the positive zone folks. There is a lot of negative energy out there and a lot of people are living in a very negative head space. The problem with that is that the more negative you are, the more negativity comes towards you. We attract the energy that we put out there. So if we spend our time worrying about bad things happening then the likelihood of those things actually happening increases. If we perceive someone as a mean person that person will be mean to us. If we worry about our health then we are likely to have health issues. Life is within ourselves. We are all in charge of our own lives, every moment of every day. We can be as happy and positive as we want to be. If we perceive someone as kind and loving then that is what we will receive from that person. And you know what? Everyone is kind and loving if we allow them to be. In our hearts, everyone is very similar. We all want to live happy, loving lives with good friends and community. Here, we live in an incredible community full of amazing people. It is up to us to be one of the amazing people and to help ourselves and others find the beauty within all of us.

Watson’s Waddle So apparently we are moving. As a dog, it has been quite the adventure. Everywhere I look there are boxes and bins in the way. It has been hard to maneuver through the house to my bed some days. And Rob is running around stressed out. He barely has time to share with me as he is trying to keep the paper going while hauling stuff around. It has been fun with lots of truck rides to the dump, Thrift Store, new house, garage sales and more, but it is still stressful. I am very excited that the new place has only 3 stairs (15 at the current place). Stairs are not my favourite thing as I have a bit of a stiff shoulder. And the new yard? Well I think 2 acres will work for me. Plus it is still in the same neighbourhood so I will continue to see all my friends. Always consider your animal companions when you are making big changes in your life. Talk to us, pet us, reassure us and love us. We want to be with you and loved by you forever. We are always worried when you leave for a few minutes as we don’t know when you will return. Scientists used a 3-D printer to create a living, lab-grown human ear, Pope Benedict XVI resigned voluntarily, the first Pope to do so since 1294, Canadian writer Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for literature and the first successful cloning of embryonic human stem cells took place. What year was it? See page 9. I am only friendly with 25 letters of the alphabet. No one knows ‘Y’.

The Thrifty Reporter Most charitable organizations choose a colour to symbolize their cause. We all have the capacity to show our support for any cause, regardless of the colour, by heading to the Invermere Thrift Store and picking up a coloured shirt for a very good price. For example, if you are attending The Soiree En Blanc event in July, check out the store for your white outfit. How about red and white for Canada's 150 celebrations on July 1st? That is going to be a big party! So whatever the event you need an outfit for, you just might find it at the Thrift Store.

It has been a busy couple of weeks with lots of really late nights trying to get things organized. Watson’s schedule has really been altered. He likes to walk, play, eat and sleep. Especially sleep. It is nuts how he can sleep for 14 hours with no problem. I think he must have a catheter in there or the largest bladder possible. I really wish that I could do the same. I sure love this hound. Watson is awesome. And thanks to everyone who gives him some lovin’ when we are out and about.

Tips from the Pro How do you deal with a windy day? This is the “Wind”ermere Valley, so we have to accept that we will be playing in the wind from time to time. The old adage goes, “when it’s breezy swing easy”. This is true as we tend to overswing in the wind, mis-hitting the ball and creating more spin and a ball out of control! It is best to take more club and swing easy, which not only helps with better contact, but usually flights the ball lower into the wind. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

So They Say They say that actions speak louder than words. Unfortunately, just not as often.

Wildfire Season

4. Pelee Point

The wildfire season is upon us. Warm dry weather can increase the hazards very quickly. Last year there were more than 1,000 wildfires in B.C., including some in our district. Nearly half were caused by human activity. Now we all have been at it for years and believe that we know better, but it is important to follow the rules with our campfires. No larger than 50 cm by 50 cm, a fire break around it, water or a shovel to help extinguish it, don’t leave it unattended and do not abandon your fire at the end of your trip. The fine is $1,150 for being out of compliance this year so please be careful.

Lost Friend Recently a friend of mine, Wally, passed away. He was like a second father to me at times when I was growing up. He is already sadly missed.

The photo on page 6 shows a bunch of talented youth from our community. It is the Silver Strings Ukulele Band. They were playing a concert at the Alliance Church for the kids from the nearby daycares. It was my first time seeing Silver Strings. They were incredible and the younger kids loved it.

Lawn Looking Good With the current weather, the grass is growing pretty quickly. My lawn looks so nice right after a fresh cutting but definitely roughens up after just a couple of days. I had Dodd & Son cut it for me last week so I can give you a testimonial this week. They did a wonderful job. They were very thorough with the weed whacking and tidied things up nicely. I have a tricky lawn with lots of obstacles. If you are looking for a lawn mowing service, give them a try at 250-341-7262.

A great job by all the organizers of the ‘Clash of the Titans’ soccer tournament this past weekend. There were a lot of teams visiting the valley, a great thing for our communities. I have no idea who won any of the divisions but they all played hard in some hot weather. A friend was out from Canmore with his daughter and was very complimentary of the event. He said it is very well organized, lots of fun and located at a nice facility in an amazing valley. I believe many of the teams felt the same way.

Open Mic

Thunderstorms

This coming Monday, June 5 is ‘Open Mic’ night at ‘Live Music Monday’ at the Horsethief Creek Pub in Radium. Marty and Larry are incredible musicians and invite anyone to join them on stage to entertain the crowd. There is always a great turnout of talent and spectators. Head out there this Monday, from 7 pm to 9 pm for a great time.

It is the season that we start to see some wild thunderstorms roll through the valley. I love watching lightning and feeling the rush of wind and the thrust of thunder. Watson not so much. Thunder scares him. A lot. Most dogs rally. They just don’t understand what it is. So I make sure that I stay close to him and chat with him lots during a thunderstorm. Lots of comforting and hugs. It is a great bonding experience.

Canadiana The moose is the largest member of the ungulate (deer) family and is very abundant in our country. It lost out to the beaver as our national animal but it is the national animal of both Sweden and Norway as well as the State of Maine. There are 750,000 moose in Canada, some weighing up to 800 kilograms. They eat as much as 14 kilograms of forage daily, being strict vegetarians. More than 300 moose are hit by vehicles just in New Brunswick annually. Be very careful as you drive through moose country as they do a lot of damage to your vehicle. The moose is a beautiful, peaceful animal.

Procedure Follow-Up Many folks have asked how things went with my colonoscopy the other week. They don’t really tell you much at the time. But I have now been called for a follow-up appointment. They have said it is ‘nonurgent’. I am considering that to be a good sign. A few folks consider this pretty personal information but it is all just a part of life and I encourage others to take care.

Re-Homing Last week I bought a dog, ‘Princess’ to be a companion for my wife and I. As it turns out, my wife is allergic to dogs so I have to re-home her. She is a 59 year-old who drives, keeps a good home and is a great cook.

Fast Feeding Frenzy I have been reflecting on my colonoscopy adventure a couple of weeks ago and how my brain gets so involved in my life. Part of the procedure (which went fine overall) is cleansing and fasting (starving) for 24 hours or so. I was allowed some clear fluids and Jello but by the time I went for the procedure, I felt a bit peckish (hungry). I tried not to think about food, but of course, I failed badly. Food became a bit of a focus. So when I was done, instead of a nice light snack (maybe an apple which I took with me) for starters it was straight to a fast-food joint where I ordered twice as much as I needed. Bad brain hahaha. Of course I was hardly able to eat any of it and I am back on track now. Anyways, take care of your health folks.
