One of the very tricky issues about having health problems is trying to figure out what you are capable of and how to carry on with your life. Everyone is affected differently by everything and it is tough not to compare yourself with others in the ‘same’ situation. I have been very blessed. There have been some incredibly tough times through all this but I have had enough support from so many of you that I have been able to stay positive and I am getting back to a fairly normal life. Many folks expect to see me in rough shape and many still treat me with kid gloves. But please do not let my dealings with these diseases make you feel any worse off with your issues. Do not compare your experiences with mine or anyone else’s. We are all different. Our bodies are different. We all deal with adversity much differently from each other. I remember the first day they got me up out of bed 5 days after my kidneys crashed and I had emergency surgery and dialysis. It was a very painful depressing day but my nurse kept stressing ‘normalcy’. She told me I would be much happier and heal much quicker if I could get back at things. And she was right for me. So that is what I try to do. Look ‘normal’ when in the public. But it takes a lot to achieve that. Hours at night and in the morning of dealing with health issues and still a looming end from multiple myeloma. Regardless of what I have going on, you need to heal at your own pace and realize that it will be different for you than it is for anyone else and you don’t have to try to achieve their goals.

DOG
Every day is different in my life, yet overall they are the same. I never know when I wake up if I can lounge in bed for a while or if we are up and out the door. Lately it is a bit of lounging as Rob has the dialysis thing to do. Should I eat breakfast before I go outside? Not sure if we are going on a quick adventure or a longer one. I guess I can’t go wrong by eating now. I am sure I can make room if more food appears haha. Is it a walk? Fishing? Visiting? Driving around with deliveries? Going for groceries? I will find out soon. All I know is that no matter what we are up to, I get to spend time with Rob. He rarely leaves me behind. He loves me and at the strangest times will just get down on the ground and pet me. And I love him. I love the sound of him saying my name followed by a “you’re a good boy”. It is an incredible feeling to look into his eyes when we are together. Love your people, love your family, love your friends, love your pets. Really, if you just love everyone and everything, you will have a wonderful life.

THE VALLEY PEAK ROCKS! 2. Great Slave Lake
So it turns out that none of this is going as well as I had hoped. I cannot survive on the night machine as things are right now. Too many alarms all night and not enough sleep. Not even close. It is too bad as the blood work is showing that this peritoneal dialysis is doing an incredible job at cleaning me up. But I do need to sleep on occasion. I am so tired. I have had to switch back to the manual system which involves four fluid exchanges (about 40 minutes each) during a 24 hour period. It is easy to do but very interruptive in my day. So I have been trying to that at night instead of the machine. An exchange at 8 pm or so, another at midnight, then off to bed if I didn’t already fall asleep in the chair. My alarm is set for 4 am and 8 am to do the last two procedures which opens me up for the day. But it leaves me like a zombie somedays. If we meet on the street and I seem distant or not talkative, it is likely because I am very tired and feeling ill. It has been a bit tougher than I imagined and without all the support of those around me, success would be difficult. I really must again thank everyone who has been helping out with meals, deliveries, writing, lawn-mowing and everything else. You have no idea what it really means to me.
Orienteering The teacher asked the orienteering class, “If I asked you to meet me for lunch at 23 degrees, four minutes North latitude and 45 degrees, 16 minutes West longitude, what would you do?” “I would suggest that you will be eating lunch alone.”

I met with the doctor running the oncology department in Cranbrook last week as I did my first chemo in the East Kootenay. It was kind of nice as he was able to tell me that I seemed to be progressing quite well in the chemo/cancer/remission department. Yahoo. Whatever that means really. Multiple myeloma never really goes away. Only 14 treatments left, actually 13 by the time you read this. Every Tuesday at 10:30 pm in the Cranbrook hospital. Thirty-nine treatments done. Who would have thought? If anyone needs a ride to Cranbrook or needs something picked up, please let me know. Likewise if you feel like driving me there and back. It is not a very long stop for the procedure, less than half an hour. I have a teleconference with my new oncologist from Kelowna next week. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say. Thanks for following my adventures.
Present Tense The elderly teacher was discussing past, present and future tenses. “If I say ‘I am beautiful’, what tense would I be using?” “It is obviously past.”

Accessibility Walk/Roll inTown How easy is it for everyone to get around downtown Invermere? Is there a different experience for the very young or the very old? Or for the most active compared to those that are disabled? And how does it differ for locals and visitors? Answers and opinions will be shared during Jane’s Walk, a free, “citizen-led walking conversation” on Thursday, June 21. You’re invited to meet outside the Invermere Public Library at 4:30 pm for the 2.4 km, roughly 2 hour walk/roll. I wonder about accessibility every time I see an elderly person with a walker, or someone in a wheelchair, downtown. Should be an interesting conversation.

Vital Signs Survey Do you think the Columbia Valley is a good place to live, work, learn and grow? What could be improved? Every year, the Columbia Valley Community Foundation asks these questions through a survey, then puts all the answers together to create the Vital Signs report. The information in Vital Signs is used by lots of different community groups and government to make decisions on grants, priorities and policy changes. You can fill out the survey online at www.valleyfoundation.ca or drop by one of the meeting places this week. Head to Invermere’s Circle Cafe from 9 am to 11 am on Thursday, June 21, or Radium’s Big Horn Cafe from 9 am to 1 pm on Friday, June 22. Summer is coming to the valley and on any given weekend there are a variety of events to choose from. If you participate then it is nice to have the right colors to wear. In a short 2 weeks there will be the Canada Day parade where red and white will be the color of the day. A week after is the Mountain Al Fresco event where white is the choice of color. I would highly recommend heading to the Invermere Thrift Store as they may just have what you are looking for. Plus you could get a great deal.

The Rockies are looking for host families to take in young hockey players for the 2018-2019 season. Billet families cook and clean for these talented young people, while providing support as a home away from home. A good billet home can make a real difference in a kid’s life. To find out more, contact Coach Wade at 341-5801.
Work Ethics “When Abe Lincoln was your age, he was studying books by the light of the fireplace,” said the father. “Yes, but when he was your age, he was President,” replied the son.

Get your parade floats registered at the Invermere Legion. The information is on page 9. This is a perfect opportunity to get your business in front of thousands of locals and visitors. The parade is always busy. And don’t forget to donate to the Kinsmen for the fireworks happening Saturday night, June 30 at midnight. They are amazing but it is important that we all contribute. Plan on enjoying the Mountain Mosaic Festival at the Pynelogs green space after the parade.

others, not what you do to others to serve yourself. Enjoy your future. It is under your control.
Tips from the Pro How do I rid myself of the duck hook? This unfortunate shot is often the result of the same swing that causes a slice, except in this case the clubface is closed at impact. To fix the duck hook you will need to change your swing direction so that the club is delivered on a path that is straight through the ball. More importantly you must keep the clubface from closing. On the backswing focus on opening the clubface like you would open a door so that it has a better chance of getting back to square at impact instead of closed. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.
Market @ the Crossroads How lucky are we, to have so many great farmers & artists as neighbours? The AgriPark Farmers Market opens for the summer season on Wednesday, June 27, giving us another opportunity to see what these hard-working, talented folks are up to this year. Bring your cash and head to the crossroads from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. With music, food, groceries and gifts for sale, you’ll have no problem filling your shopping bags.
Congraduations The Class of 2018 is pretty much done! A couple of exams left here and there, but overall, all over. I hope you have all enjoyed the past years and are looking forward to making your mark on the world. Some of you will head out to some great high-paying jobs and some will seek fame and fortune. My one tip of Valley Peak wisdom; you will find a lot more happiness helping and serving other folks than you will by being selfserving. Fame comes from what you do for
