(Answer on page 6) June 25-July 1, 2020 Happy Canada Day Thanks to my neighbors who have decorated their house for Canada Day. There is a ‘backwards’ parade in place where we can drive around and check out decorations. I hope a lot of folks get out and take advantage of that.

I really wish I had more energy and finances. It would be nice to put together a float and just drive it all around the community for the day. Making folks smile is always a good thing.

It shrunk from 12 pages to 8 pages plus I had quite a few less printed as there were not a lot of places open to receive them.

I love the 8-page format as it is so much easier to put together. But I am finding most of the papers are gone from the racks quite quickly each week now. I’ll be bumping up the number of copies this week.

Anyways, The Valley Peak is well-read and a very effective place to advertise. Your ad gets a lot of exposure in the valley and on line. It is very affordable too.

Fresh Fruit It is the time of year that more and more fresh fruit and vegetables become available. Hopkins Harvest now has fresh strawberries and cherries available. They are both delicious.

AG Valley Foods also sources as much fresh and local produce as possible. Their Creston asparagus is amazing.

Saddening We all have different beliefs out there. That is a normal thing. But what is not normal is to wish others harm because of their beliefs.

What I find very saddening, almost pathetic really, is people who have to put in their negative 2 cents worth. I will see a FB posting saying, “COVID protester gets infected with virus,” and I think that is too bad. But then I see a bunch of people commenting “good’ or “They deserve it” or many things along those lines.

I ask myself if people really hope that others die who have been trying to stand up for their rights. If you think that way, you make me sad.

2020 PROPERTY TAX IMPORTANT CHANGES DURING COVID-19 The District of Invermere’s property tax due date will remain as July 2, 2020 and all property owners are encouraged to pay their property taxes, if they are able, on or before the due date.

In order to assist you, District of Invermere Council has passed a bylaw delaying penalties for late payment by roughly three months due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All taxpayers can make payments until September 30, 2020 without penalty.

A 5% penalty will be applied to any unpaid property taxes after September , 2020.

This includes penalty on any unclaimed Home Owner Grants.

A further 5% penalty will be applied to any unpaid property taxes after October 30th, 2020.

This allows you to make payments without penalty until September 30, 2020.

Although you may still pay your property tax before then if you are able.

We hope this provides some relief during these challenging times.

To Be a Policeman I have had a few interactions with the police in my life and I can’t say they were all very pleasant, or even fair, but mostly it has been all good. I also worked as a guard at the jail here and saw a bit of what they deal with while on duty.

I really can’t imagine having a job like that.

You are basically dealing with the worst elements of society on a regular basis.

Many cops have never done anything but good and everything with good intent. But there are a few exceptions and unfortunately, the media makes those stand out.

I also wonder how it would feel to be told to enforce totally corrupt and immoral laws that you do not agree with yourself. Especially in a small community where you know a lot of folks. That would make things very tough.

In my fantasy world, people in law enforcement would be strong enough to stand up to corrupt politicians as easily as the average citizen.

This ‘new normal’ really sucks. I am glancing at past issues and the end of June and start of July were always very busy times.

The Valley Peak was full of live music events, markets, breakfasts, parades, fireworks, festivals and more.

The Columbia Valley was an incredible place to be with more and more great traditions that steered us towards our own little culture here. Life was about community, fellowship and celebrating together.

Canada Day was loaded with things to do in every community and I often had to pick and choose which events to attend. It was a wonderful problem to have.

Many visitors come to this valley every year to join in our celebrations. For such tiny communities we could put on some spectacular event thanks to the efforts of so many volunteers.

This year is quite a bit different. Many of us have no idea what, if anything, is happening to celebrate the birth of Canada. We aren’t even really sure what we are allowed to do.

It seems that a lot of our heritage and history are being taken away from us right now. I would not be surprised if we never see much of it come back.

I would like to note here that Trudeau has actually said that it is not okay to celebrate Canada but it is still okay to go out and protest. He does not seem too interested in honouring our country’s heritage at all.

Quiet Hospitals So have you been in a hospital lately? I have. It is a regular part of my lifestyle.

Anyways, they all seem very quiet. People are almost afraid to go into one due to the plandemic.

The saddest part of this really, is the fact that people who go into the hospitals that are actually sick and dying are not allowed to have visitors. They could be in hospital for weeks before passing without seeing a single family member or friend.

To me, that is very sad and makes me think that I would prefer to just die at home, surrounded by people who love me.

It is a strange concept.

Watson’s Waddle Happy Canada Day. I have great news for all of the dogs out there. The Kinsmen Fireworks has been cancelled.

That is sad for the humans. I know that Rob loved going down to watch them. Last year he even got onto a barge on the lake.

But for me it is a blessing. Fireworks and thunder put me hiding and trembling in the bathroom. I will lay on the floor against the toilet. My heartrate elevates and I get short of breath and all sweaty. It is an all-out panic attack.

I was never a big fan of the sirens during the parade either. This is going to be the most serene, peaceful Canada Day ever.

I am looking forward to maybe having a barbecue or something that day. A walk, a dip in the lake for a big drink and a couple tiny morsels of cooked meat as a treat. I can approve that type of celebration no problem.

I hope all you humans and hounds have a fun and friendly Canada Day.

Someone Has to Say It I had a friend tell me her grandkid is back in elementary school and has some new rules to follow. I am not sure if I heard her wrong or if I just don’t understand what they are doing.

She is in a class with only 4 kids for 2 days per week. They are not allowed to rise from their desks and are kept several feet apart ‘for their safety’. But as soon as it is recess time, they are allowed to mix and play with whomever they like (nice).

I am not sure what message is being portrayed there. Very mixed at best. It is like a hardcore example of authoritarianism. You kids do exactly what we say no matter how little sense it makes.

Similar to much of what we learned. Never question authority. And here we are.

On the Edge They say it takes a whole community to raise a child. That is always quite apparent in small communities like ours. It was similar in Castlegar, where I grew up.

But it also takes a whole community to support everyone. I know that because I have been living it. The Valley Peak is not a very lucrative adventure and I will likely have to write it until I am on my death bed (funny I have felt like I was on my death bed 4 times in the past 3 years). My physical limitations also limit a lot of my plans and projects.

So I want to really thank all of those who continue to step up and help me on a regular basis. The meals delivered by neighbours and friends are very helpful (and tasty). The firewood has been fantastic.

The help with maintenance and cleaning is invaluable.

So really, it takes a whole community to raise me. Thanks everyone.

So in the month of May. British Columbia had 170 opioid deaths versus 88 covid deaths. We also had a 12 year-old West Kootenay boy hang himself over being isolated. That does not even take into account all the livelihoods that have been lost and the future impacts of that.

Systemic Racism What is that really? We are hearing a lot about it and many of us feel like we are being blamed for it. Justin Trudeau loves to come out and talk about how every Canadian is a racist and that Canada is wrought with systemic racism.

My understanding is that means that the systems in Canada are full of racism. I am not really sure how that works as I do not really see it in my little world.

But I do know that I am not in charge of the systems in Canada and that I really should not be meant to feel guilty for something that I am not responsible for. Trudeau himself should be answering for systemic racism, not blaming the citizens.

Is there racism in Canada? Of course there is. Do I think every Canadian is a racist? I guess that depends on how you define a racist.

I do know that the Columbia Valley is a very loving and caring community for anyone that is in need and I am proud to be a part of that.

Facing the Tsunami I saw a very thought-provoking video a while ago and it has changed the way I deal with things a little bit. It involved some spirituality and deep thought about what it is to be strong.

It basically came down to a single question. If you were on a beach and looked out to see a huge tsunami coming and you knew there was no possible way to escape, what would you do?

Would you turn and run. All the while knowing it was hopeless? Or would you grab the hand of the person beside you, face the tsunami, and think to yourself, “This is going to be glorious!”

What does that all mean? To me it means that I need to learn to face these difficult times and deal with them as best I can rather than turn and run and hide and just let all the crap happen.

Aggressive Does This is the time of year that there are quite a few baby deer running around. They are very cute and it might seem nice to want to get a closer look. But it is not a good idea to go near them.

The mothers are very protective. Really, they can be quite aggressive if you are approaching them.

Relaxed Pace I actually worked on the paper a bit more efficiently than usual, getting it mostly done a day early. What a change in methods that is for me lately. It felt pretty nice finishing it up at a relaxed pace.
