Live at the Whitehouse The Canada Day weekend brings live music to the Whitehouse Pub in Windermere. Friday night is a chance to showcase your talents with karaoke. Then on Saturday and Sunday, local band, ‘Hamburgers on Wonderbread’ will be Performing live music. They do a 9 pm show both evenings but also have a matinee at 4:30 pm on Saturday. The Whitehouse really rocks on these long weekends. Get out there and check it out.

Riddliculous A bit of a logical thinking problem. A man is pulling his son (on a raft) across a lake from the opposite shore with a long rope. The knot releases and the rope falls off the raft. It is too far out to throw another rope, the boy can’t paddle and neither person can swim. How can the man get his son to shore? See page 8.

Fancy Fireworks Plan on staying up beyond midnight this Sunday, June 30. The Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley shall be hosting their annual Canada Day Fireworks display, beginning around midnight that evening. The Club has been diligently raising money to fund the show, watched by thousands of locals and visitors annually. Hopefully everyone has contributed a bit, businesses included, as the display does bring many folks to the valley. Every year I hear folks from the cities saying our fireworks is the best and I certainly agree. We have a great backdrop with the valley, lake and mountains, filling with bright flashes and echoing booms for all to enjoy. The fireworks are launched below the Eddie Mountain Arena so that is one of many good spots to watch from.

Attitude Not so nice. Anything I can do, my ex-wife can do bitter.

Issue 26 One of the features of writing The Valley Peak is tracking time. This is issue 26 of volume 17. That means that this is the 17th year of existence and this is the 26th week of the year. We are halfway through this year already. I am not sure if that is really exciting or depressing.

Robservations This is always one of the easier issues for Robservations. Happy Canada Day folks. What does Canada Day mean in the Columbia Valley? It means a very busy weekend with a lot of visitors. It is a great price to pay for being awesome. We have exceptional celebrations here. The fireworks on Sunday night, the parade and Mountain Mosaic Festival on Monday. They are amazing events. For me it is nice to see the valley so busy. Many of our local businesses depend on all the summer visitors to get through the year. I am not a big fan of the traffic or line-ups in the grocery stores but I understand the value of it and can tolerate it. These folks wait all year for a chance to experience the beautiful place that we get to enjoy daily. It actually reminds me of the importance of gratitude and not taking life for granted. Imagine living in a huge city, driving for an hour to work in a big tower and driving an hour home. And home is a big house on a tiny property. Here we have lakes, mountains, trails and more so I understand why people come here. So be nice folks. Give everyone a break out there. We know what it will be like so we shall accept and rejoice in it. Be the person that you would like to bump into if you were on a holiday.

Morbid Will glass coffins become the new thing? Remains to be seen.

Life is a Parade! The Canada Day Parade was fantastic last year and I hope it is even better this year. Invermere gets thousands of spectators for the parade, lining the street from one end to the other. Many visitors say we have the best celebrations that they have ever seen. Anyway, anyone is welcome to put a float in the parade. Just show up at Pothole Park by 9 am to get registered and for judging of the floats. Then a bit of socializing before the 11 am start time. There is no cost to be in the parade and it is a great way to get free advertising in the valley. Thanks to the Invermere Legion for organizing the parade again this year.

When Rob has me out for a walk, everyone tells me how handsome I am. I know that I have it all going on. Cuteness is my style. People love me. But really, I can be a bit of a jerk to other dogs when I have to. I love meeting dogs out on our walks and I love playing. But I am very jealous around food and around Rob’s affection. I do not like to share. Rob finds it a bit entertaining as I try to prove my dominance to a dog that is twice my height. On another note, I hate loud strange noises like thunder and fireworks. We are at that time of year when a lot of bright flashes are accompanied by very loud noises. And that causes me and many of my friends to panic. I am not sure why, but I head for the bathroom and lay as close to the toilet as possible. I like the coolness and the way the sound is muffled in there. If I am outside I tend to just run wildly in no particular direction, hoping to get away from the sounds. That doesn’t work very well. So please be careful with your pets on Canada Day. Fireworks ae great to see but hugging and loving your pets at that time is so much more important.

Kidney Failure So last week I was hoping to do a dialysis run in the renal centre of Trail hospital while I was there for surgery. It seemed like a great plan to me. Unfortunately the renal units are very busy these days; It is a growing industry as more and more people are succumbing to kidney disease. Trail has lots of ‘new starts’ or first-time dialysis patients. Some are acute, like myself, where their kidneys have stopped functioning suddenly and it is critical to start dialysis. So pay attention to your health. Go for regular checkups and make sure your blood work gets done. Kidney disease (the silent killer) can be caught early and managed through diet for a long time before dialysis is needed. Once you are on dialysis life really changes as you are at the mercy of the hospital and their scheduling. Life becomes a long and cumbersome adventure until your prayers of a transplant are answered. Which brings up the question, ‘Have any of you considered donating a kidney?’ You have an extra one that would change someone’s life.

Side Effects There are a lot of issues that happen with kidney failure and cancer. I have been able to work through most of them. It has not been easy. Not even close. Something new is starting to show itself. A heart murmur was discovered last year. Last week I had an ECG and it showed some crazy heart activity. Having a catheter inserted into my heart chamber seems to be putting some stress on it. So that brings up a whole new reality. We are all going to die sometime, it is just a matter of how. For me, multiple myeloma was leading the pack as it induced kidney failure and brought on a year of chemo. That is still one of my front runners. But now heart failure is stepping up to the plate. A much quicker way to go. So that leaves me with a tough decision. Do I want to be resuscitated? Do I want to carry on with this life? Or do I want a DNR (do not resuscitate) listing on my charts. It is a very tough thought process. When I am occasionally out fishing or visiting the market, life is pretty good. But that is not nearly as often as I would like. During the hours I spend in isolation, hooked up to a dialysis machine, my thoughts are very different. That is a very low-quality life that really sucks. I have a lot to think about these days.

So I drove to Trail last week to have my peritoneal dialysis catheter removed. I don’t use that tube anymore as I am doing hemodialysis. It is a pretty good drive that takes me about 5 hours with dog walks and lunch. I did dialysis from 7:15 to 11 am and checked in for 11:15 for surgery. I met with the prep nurse (I’m only 6’11/2”-swear I was 6’3” once) and answered all her questions then was sent to the waiting area. A few minutes later I was called in to be told by the surgical manager that they had to cancel me as the procedure before me was more difficult than anticipated. So that sucked a little bit. But really, more so for the fellow in front of me I guess. So I have to head back there in a couple weeks. I am booked for a morning procedure so I shouldn’t be cancelled. It will be nice to have it removed so I can at least wade up to my waist in one of our beautiful lakes.

Did you see the photo of the Athalmer transfer station in The Valley Peak a few weeks ago? A big pile of garbage lying beside the bins? That has to change. The District of Invermere is making the change. The transfer station will now be open 5 days a week, Thursday to Monday (closed Tuesday and Wednesday). It will be open from 7 am to 7 pm on those days and it will be manned. There will be a couple employees ensuring proper use of the facility including directing us to the appropriate bins for our waste. It is too bad that it has come to this but several of us have continued to abuse the area and action has to be taken.

We have been having some cool rainy days so I decided it would be a good time to clean out the storage shed. There are always extra items lying around that could go to a new home. But first, I need to discard any items that the Invermere Thrift Store cannot sell. This would include anything that has a safety sticker like life jackets and floatation devices. You know those cute kids swimsuits that have a floatation donut sewn inside... since there is safety involved they cannot be sold through the store. Who would have known there are so many rules but the Thrift Store takes safety very seriously, so please help them by not donating items that they will have to throw out.

At 2 am, we can see Jupiter while the Southern Hemisphere has a clear view of everything else, including Venus, Mercury, Saturn, Uranus, Sun, Moon, Pluto and Mars and Neptune lined up perfectly with each other. It is a pretty tight cluster actually. Anyway, ‘Google Sky Map’ is a great app to have.

Change Your Life

Important Notice Industrial Park Transfer Station Hours of Operation Starting July 4th, 2019 the Invermere Transfer Station will no longer be open 7 days a week. The District will be operating a pilot project that will see the Invermere Transfer Station fully supervised and operated on set days and hours of operation.

The Station will be open as follows: Thursdays to Mondays 7AM to 7PM including statutory holidays

Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays Site staff will direct users to bins available for use. This site will only be used to drop off household waste. Furniture, appliances, contractor waste and yard waste will not be accepted at this site.

Only waste in residential bags that will fit through the bear resistant lids will be accepted.

What is the best way to take a burden off your shoulders? Go out and take a burden off of someone else. A lot of us are lost in life, not knowing why we are here and not finding any joy in what we do. It is a common ailment. How do you change that? By making a difference in someone else’s life. It can be as simple as smiling and saying ‘Hi’ to a stranger on the street. Everyone out there has issues and we can choose to judge or support. Believe me, being a supportive, helpful person will change your own life. Do some volunteer work, visit some seniors, mow the neighbour’s lawn (I’m at 1506 10 St. haha) or just about any task you can think of. Make a difference out there and it will make a difference for you.

BIG Book Sale It is getting closer! The Friends of the Invermere Public Library are holding the annual BIG Book Sale on Saturday, July 13. It is at the Columbia Valley Centre, starting at 8:30 am. Readers donate their slightly used books year-round for this sale. There will be books of every category imaginable. There is a donation bin across from the library. All funds raised from the sale of the books go towards programs in the library.

Small Engine Repair We all have that old lawn mower, chainsaw or weed whacker that is just not running up to par. Maybe a power ice auger, a leaf blower or a generator that needs a tune up. Try out Lee’s Small Engine Repair. Lee loves small engines and has most of them figured out. He offers affordable prices on quality workmanship. Lee is located across from NAPA in the Industrial Park. Call 250-341-2551.

Normal My son’s math teacher called him average. I think he’s mean.

Steak Sandwich That is this Friday’s meal at the Invermere Legion. Steak sandwich with side dishes. It will be another one of those great meals. Dinner is at 6:30 pm every Friday with meat and 50/50 draws happening at the same time. Also make sure you visit their market on Saturdays. It is located right in front of the Legion from 9 am to 1 pm.

TMI The world is full of acronyms TMI (Too Much Information) is one of them. I often put some pretty personal things in The Valley Peak and on occasion, someone will mention that it might not be that good of an idea. But I like to be fairly open in life. I think that everyone should know that we all have difficulties to work through in life. It has been very interesting finding out how many

folks suffer with kidney issues and we all know there are many, many people affected by cancer. And I do get many compliments on how I write with honesty and from the heart. Thanks for those who notice.

This Week in History On June 29 (1953) the first Corvette was sold. July 1 (1200) brought the invention of sunglasses in China and July 2 (1698) was the invention of the steam engine.

Busy Times I am very disorganized with The Valley Peak at the best of times. During the quiet times of year I barely keep up with my advertisers and the billing. Actually I don’t keep up and with my illness I lost a lot of ground. Now it is the busy season and I don’t even know which way is up. So many events to try to cover and so many new advertisers. It is hard to keep everyone happy, including myself. Every week I wonder what I have missed.
