Which Canadian athlete won the Olympic Triathlon in the year 2000 after being involved in a huge bike crash? (Answer on page 7) June 29-July 5, 2017 Fantastic Friday Fireworks Invermere does it right. Friday night, June 30, at one minute after midnight, the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley will be putting on a great Fireworks show to celebrate Canada’s birthday. It is always a terrific show that people come from all over to enjoy. They will be launched from the railroad tracks below the arena so they can be seen from almost anywhere on the lake. There will be many boats out there and it is almost part of the show watching them. I usually watch from up by the Inukshuk near the arena with lots of other happy folks. The cemetery area in Windermere or down along Chabot beach are also great spots. Thanks to the Kinsmen for doing this each year. Support them.

Happy Birthday Canada. Our Dominion began 150 years ago. We live in a pretty good country although it has a bit of a dark history with indigenous relations. Enjoy the weekend and have some fun. It will be pretty much the busiest weekend of the year in the valley. Summer is starting and everyone is celebrating. Be nice out there. It can be frustrating when things are busy and there are a lot of visitors around. But we have to expect that. Just step back, relax and let things happen however they must. Don’t get worked up about traffic or the way someone behaved in a busy area. Remember that we are all on our own journeys and rarely consider those around us. No one is trying to make your experiences miserable, they are just on their own adventure, trying to make it fun and fulfilling. So be kind, be respectful, be forgiving and you will enjoy your weekend so much more. Be one of the reasons that visitors love to come to the Columbia Valley.

Watson’s Waddle It is hot out there this week folks. Just a reminder to keep your pets cool. DO NOT leave us in your vehicle on a hot, sunny day. The vehicle will increase the temperature immensely. I make it tricky for Rob because I hate being left home alone. At least Rob thinks I hate it. He ends up taking me lots of places. This is good as it always means a quick stroll before and after he does his thing. But really, I don’t mind a quiet, cool, peaceful time on a dog bed in the house. He always leaves me with a nice treat so it is all good. Fireworks will be happening this weekend. I am not really a big fan of the loud bangs. The Earth shakes a little and it freaks me out. I think most dogs are afraid of the sound of fireworks (and thunder). I am hoping Rob stays home with me that night but I doubt he will. I will probably be in the bathroom on the floor when he gets home. Remember that your pets will be scared also.

What Year was It? It was the worst year of tornadoes in history as 148 storms hit 13 states and 1 province leaving 315 dead, ‘The Sting’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’ were released, Jimmy Fallon was born, Stephen King published ‘Carrie’ (first novel under his own name), the Flyers defeated the Bruins to be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup and the Expo World’s Fair was held in Spokane, Washington. What year was it? See page 9.

Soiree en Blanc That would be a party in white folks. It is coming up on Saturday, July 8, at a secret location (find out where at noon on that day). Everyone dresses in white and all the tables and decorations will be white. A choice of meals can be ordered or you can bring your own fare. There will be a DJ during dinner followed by live music by the ‘Small Town Dirtbags’ for dancing. This is one of the premiere events in the valley. Give it a try.

It will be held at the old Invermere Community Hall on Saturday, July 15 from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Lots of time to find a book. The BIG Book sale is a huge used book sale that helps fund many programs at the Invermere Library. Folks donate their gently-used books to the event throughout the year. Volunteers sort the books into several categories and set them out for our perusal. Stop in and check it out. With the new library in the new community centre, they will be using funds to boost the children’s section.

Happy 150 Canada Day! It is such a great time to celebrate our country, our province and our valley. We do it up in style with fireworks and many other activities. We love to show our patronage by flying the red and white flag. Did you know that the Thrift Store has red and white clothing as well as other merchandise? And we don't need to do it just on July 1st. Be proud...wear red and white all week. Happy Birthday Canada. Seniors... Don’t forget Senior’s Only 65+ Day as it is going to be held Wednesday, July 5, 2-4 pm. This will be my last post for Thrifty Reporter. It has been a blast and I wish everyone a Thrifty life.

Rhubarb Season I have fantastic neighbours. And it is rhubarb season. My neighbours like to share (so far). Last week I received a jar of rhubarb sauce (similar to apple sauce). It goes great on ice cream (everything does). I have almost finished the whole jar already. It arrived with a couple muffins. One was called a ‘manly’ muffin and had bacon in the icing. It was very good. On the other side it has been a strawberryrhubarb pie, rhubarb muffins, home-made soups, an awesome lunch visit and more. Life is all about relationships and it is so nice having great relationships with the people all around you.

It is getting to be hot and dry out there, especially with the little breezes we have been experiencing. The risk of wildfires is increasing dramatically. Please be careful and follow the rules with your campfires. The fine is $1,150 for not conforming. The Wardens will be out through the summer checking on things Your fire cannot exceed 50 cm in width or height. You must have a bucket (8 litres or more) of water or a shovel nearby (both is a good system). Your fire must have a fuel -free guard zone around it. Never leave your fire unattended and do not abandon it when you leave the area. Put it out. Drown it. Thanks for your efforts. Nearly half of all wildfires are caused by humans. We all know better but it still happens. Take care.

My thesaurus is terrible. It is also terrible.

Stage 2 Water Restrictions The District of Invermere is now on Stage 2 Water Restrictions. You can only water between 4 am and 10 am and between 7 pm and 11 pm. Odd-numbered houses can only water on Mondays and Thursdays and evennumbered homes can water on Tuesdays and Fridays. We can water gardens, etc. with hand-held devices or a hose with a shut-off at any time. The District is offering free water-use assessments in town. Call the office 250-342 -9281 and ask for Andrea for more info.

Tips from the Pro What’s the secret to avoiding 3-putts? That’s an easy one, just putt it twice or less! Really though, this is all in your speed control. For the most part the average golfer is pretty good at getting close on the line of the putt but it is the distance control that is the challenge. Practice putting to a tee or coin from 3 different distances, just focusing on trying to get the ball to stop even with the coin. Use different lengths of backswings to get the ball to travel different distances as opposed to thinking of hitting it harder or softer. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Long Drive Contest Congratulations to the winners of the Long Drive Contest on the Fairmont Airport Runway last week. Dean Midyette, Wade Logan, Linda Pfeiffer, Laura Riley and Conall Deagon each won in their respective divisions. It was great condition. I gave it a try and was very unimpressive as I am not a very straight ball-hitter. It was a fun challenge though. The event raised $745 for the Fairmont Hot Springs Community Association Trails Project.

Lost and Found The folks at Columbia Valley Trading Company in Frater Landing have found a set of Chrysler keys. Stop in and describe them to claim.

Vacation Bible School It is coming up quickly. Get your kids registered for one of the funnest summer programs in the valley. The cost is only $20 per child for a week of great mornings. It is for ages 5 to 12 years old. The kids will have a great time every morning. Families are invited to a wrap-up barbecue on the Friday afternoon. VBS is happening Monday to Friday, July 10 to 14. It is held at the Lake Windermere Alliance Church.

Great Cleaners Are you in need of a cleaning service in the valley? Paula and Cassandra of Dutch Creek Cleaners do a fantastic job. They did a final deep clean for me when I moved out of my last place. My landlords were very impressed with the job they did. They can schedule regular cleans for your place or can come in for a one-time deep clean. They service the whole Columbia Valley form Canal Flats to Brisco and Panorama. Call 250-945-4494.
