June 2-8, 2016 Volume 14 Issue 23 Fun Golf Day The Fairmont Lions are hosting their ‘Fun Day of Golf’ this Saturday, June 4, at Coys Par 3 Golf Course. It is a wonderful day of nine holes at a beautiful, tricky par 3 course, followed by an amazing barbecue meal. There are 2 tee times available with the shotgun start, noon or 2:30 pm followed by dinner at 5:30 pm. The cost is only $30 for 9 holes of golf and dinner. That is an incredible deal as I know the dinner will be fantastic. Dinner only tickets are $15 ($5 for kids’ barbecue). Get them at Coys, 250-345-6504. So, if you like golf, and you like food, and you like doing good things, then this is the perfect event for you.

ity car wash this Saturday, June 4, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Syndicate Board Shop. So two important points here. Firstly, it is for Dry Grad which is a wonderful event for the kids that are graduating. It is a great thing to contribute to. Secondly, it generally costs me $4 or more to wash my car at the other places and I have to do the labour myself. Why wouldn’t I pay a few bucks for an awesome job done by others? So I hope to see you all there supporting Dry Grad. It is by donation (I think $8 or better is pretty good) and it is for a great cause.

Music from the Movies Classical music trio ‘La Cafamore’ is performing this Friday, June 3, at Christ Church Trinity. These ladies are incredible musicians, playing piano, viola and violin. They have carefully chosen and mastered great classical ‘music from the movies’ for an entertaining performance exclusively for our enjoyment this weekend. Tickets for the 7:30 pm show can be bought in advance at ‘Avenue’ in downtown Invermere for only $15 for adults ($12 for seniors and students, under 12 are free). You will also be able to find tickets at the door (until it sells out). This is a rare type of performance so take advantage of this opportunity. It will be a very enjoyable evening.

Human nature is a wonderful and puzzling thing. Pretty much from the time we are in our teens, we believe we know a lot (if not everything) about anything that is important. As we get older (and supposedly wiser) we begin to realize that actually, we knew very little back then but now we know it all. When I was twenty I discovered how naïve I was as a teenager. When I was thirty, I finally knew it all, not like it was when I was only twenty. The other day I had someone stress to me that they knew everything about themselves and their body (at the age of 35). It reminded me of myself. It is amazing how much my life has changed and my body has changed since then. Well now I am in my early 50s, and I do most certainly know everything. At least if you listened to me yapping away, that is the impression that you would get anyway. But what I do know for sure, is that I actually know very little. I have opened my mind to learning every single day of my life and potentially every moment of my life. There is so much out there and so much within us that we will always be learning more. At least I have learned that much!
On Time Service A man was always late for his dentist’s appointment. When the dental assistant called to confirm his appointment he said he would be 15 minutes late. “That won’t be a problem, will it?” “No problem. We just won’t have time to use the anesthetic.” He arrived early.

Saturdays show is $21 advance tickets. Call 250-342-9517 for reservations or more information.

Tilly and I were quite the hit this past weekend. It was the local youth soccer tournament and there were kids and adults from everywhere. I got to say ‘HI’ to a lot of other dogs but more importantly, lots of people wanted to pet us. Just watching the change in people’s expressions when they first notice that we are around is great. I see a huge smile developing on almost everyone’s face. We were petted by hundreds of people; whole soccer teams would halt their practice just to rub my ears. My favourite part was trying to sneak into people’s lunches when they weren’t paying attention. Rob & Trudi had to keep us on pretty close watch sometimes. Anyways, thanks for all the love and excitement everybody. It is always a pleasure meeting new people and reconnecting with old friends.
Placing an Order A little old lady walked into a bar that said ‘Men Only’. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we only serve men in here.” “Great. I’ll take two please.”
What Year Was It? Shirley Temple was born, Mickey Mouse made his first television appearance as ‘Steamboat Willie’ in a clip by Disney titled ‘Plane Crazy’ and Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, beginning the age of antibiotics. The International Red Cross and Red Crescent were established, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic by plane (as a passenger) and the first Yo-Yo factory was built in California. What year was it? See page 9.

No Ants! The house that I rent has been here for quite a while. It is a beautiful place in Invermere with an incredible view. But it has had a real issue with ants. Big, hungry ants. I would see and take care of several ants a day. That is until this spring. Invermere Pest Control did the job. I admit that I was skeptical but I am now definitely a believer. I actually have not seen a single ant since Darren was here. That’s a pretty good testimony for success. Give them a call at 250-688-1235.

Moe Norman was one of the greatest Canadian golfers of all time. He won 55 Canadian Tour events, set 33 course records and had 17 hole-in-ones. He played on the PGA Tour for a few tournaments in 1959 but quit due to bullying from other players and the PGA itself so he returned to Canada.
Experienced Jack Nicklaus was a great golfer. One day after a great round his opponent said, “Wow, you really know your way around a course. What’s your secret?” “The holes are numbered.”

Sandwich Boards There are a lot of businesses in the District of Invermere and everyone wants to get the word out about what is happening in their business. Of course, The Valley Peak is the best way to do that, but many decide to use sandwich boards. All sandwich boards must be permitted by the District. The permit must be attached to the inside of the board. As of June 30, all non-permitted boards will be confiscated by the District until proper permits are obtained. Campfire Regulations The season is here for camping and as always, it is important to be careful with your campfires out there. Some regulations are in place and the fine for nonconformance have really increased this year. Campfires must not be larger than 50 cm high by 50 cm wide. You must have a shovel or at least 8 litres of water nearby. A fire break must surround your fire. Never leave your campfire unattended. Always make sure your fire is extinguished before you leave the area. Anyone violating a campfire or open burning regulation can be issued a fine of $1,150. If you cause a wildfire, you may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. Be careful folks.
It Was That Year (From page 4) In 1928, the Iron Lung was invented, bubble gum was invented by Double Bubble, the first home pregnancy test was distributed and the first colour television transmission took place.

Where I Was The photo on the bottom of page 6 shows a light-filled fountain at night. It is from Dorothy Lake at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre. Thanks to the District of Invermere for such a beautiful sight.
Timing My wife is a stickler for following recipes. One day I could detect a familiar odour so I shouted, “Honey, I think the cookies are burning.” “I know,” she answered. “Aren’t you going to take them out?” “Not for another 6 minutes.”

Name That Tune I remember when I was a bit younger and ‘Name that Tune’ was a television game show. It was awesome as the contestants had to guess which songs were playing with less and less notes being played. I really sucked at it. The Best Western Invermere Inn hosts a ‘Name that Tune’ contest every Thursday evening beginning at 8 pm. It is a lot of fun and you can win some nice prizes. They also have wings on for $9.95/pound that evening. So get out there and show your musical memory. It is a lot of fun.

Do Your Part I am feeling pretty good about parts of myself some days. My church has really been suggesting that we be nice to others under any circumstances and that we help each other in any way we can. It is supposed to feel good. And it does. It is crazy how nice you can feel after doing something good. It is a way better feeling than trying to outdo someone or trying to get rich. I haven’t done much, just a quick helping hand here and there, or a nice smile and a willing ear. It’s easy and it feels good. Life is about relationships; helping, loving and being loved. Relationships with everyone you meet. Being that person that you think everyone else should be.
Word Searches Everyone loves a puzzle and even more folks love a Word Search if it has relevant content. This week’s puzzle is all about Copper Point Golf. So if you have an interesting topic (preferably with a list of 27 words) that you would like to see in the puzzle, let me know and I can probably do that. Similarly, if you are one of my advertising clients, I am happy to make it all about you. Just send me a list of words relevant to your business. Twenty seven words of 13 letters or less. Words can be combined. ‘The Valley Peak’ can work as 13 letters. My contact info is on the top of every page if you are interested in this opportunity.
Talented A man with no arms walks into a guitar shop. “I’ll take this one,” he says. “That will be $300. Do you mind if I ask how you are going to use it?” “No problem. I just play by ear.”
Movie Madness I was fortunate enough to get to visit the set of ‘Suck It Up’, a movie being filmed here in the Columbia Valley. It was very interesting watching how much work and repetition go into just a few seconds of a film. They redid the one scene several times until they were happy with it. There is a lot of standing perfectly quiet while they are filming as the sound microphones are so sensitive. And it was easy to see that everyone had a job to do and it had to be done at the right time.
Email rob@valleypeak.ca Thanks to the folks for letting me visit. I am hoping to get back to another venue for some more photos. Good luck with your production. They will be in the valley for a couple more weeks so everyone keep your eyes open out there and you may get a chance to check it out. There will be some locals being used as extras, which is wonderful. I heard a great story on the news last week. An 11 year-old boy noticed a familiar pattern when he glanced at a map of discovered Mayan cities. It reminded him of the pattern of bright stars in the sky above him. The Mayan civilization was known to be very interactive with the sky and stars. The boy laid a photo of the sky over a map of the cities and found it to be a perfect match. He also noticed no city mapped where one of the brightest stars was located. Satellite imagery is showing some structures in that spot and a team is on their way to check it out. Brilliant really.
