DTSS Bands in Concert
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy live music in our community, but stand-up comedians don’t grace local stages nearly as much. Take advantage of the Yuk Yuk’s On Tour comedy night at the Horsethief Creek Pub this Saturday, June 9, featuring comedians Brett Miller and Sam Tonning. The show runs 9 pm to 10:30 pm so there’s plenty of time to enjoy dinner and some drinks first. Early bird tickets are on sale now for $10 ($15 general admission). Call the pub at 347-6400 for details.
This coming week brings the final concerts for the DTSS bands. As always, admission is by a silver donation for the 7:30 pm shows at the high school gym. The junior bands (Bands 8 and 9 plus Junior Jazz) will play on Wednesday, June 13 and the senior bands (concert and stage) will perform on Thursday, June 14.
Specials Did you hear about the shortages at the paddle sale at the boat shop? Apparently it was quite the oar deal.
Texas Barbecue Get out to the Spilli Station Café this Saturday, June 9 for an authentic Texas-style Barbecue. Enjoy chicken or ribs with three sides, bread, dessert and bottomless iced tea for $34.95. These folks are incredible cooks so don’t miss out on this one. Reservations are suggested as seating is limited for 4 to 7 pm only. Call 250-346-3081.

The $15 tickets (free for under 12) are available at the door, or at Pynelog’s in advance. La Cafamore always gives an incredible performance. Treat yourself to some beautiful live music as part of your weekend.
Live Music Monday Half of the Kimberly family band In Pursuit will play at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Monday, June 11, from 7-9 pm. Come out for an entertaining evening featuring an eclectic selection of songs from Fraser and Declan Armstrong. Youngsters are welcome at the pub when they come with an adult, and the food’s great, so bring whoever you want to spend some time with and make an evening of it.
Thanks For enjoying this week’s issue.

Live Theatre in Invermere Our high school students have worked hard to put together their year-end show, which brings two comedies and a drama to the stage on Friday, June 8 and Saturday, June 9, at 7 pm both nights. The performance is called “What’s On (Netflix) DTSS Theatre?” and promises to be “so real, you’ll think it’s live.” Get your tickets early from the Blue Dog Café, from the high school, or bring your cash to the door. Tickets are $10/adults and $5/students. The kids do everything from acting to lighting and stage-managing, and are a talented bunch. Let’s fill those seats and show our support.

Robservations So everyone has problems, whether they are based on money, health, relationships, work or whatever. Everyone. Unfortunately people are so worried about being judged that they keep so many of their issues to themselves. We keep things bottled up and try to solve everything ourselves. We think no one wants to get involved and that no one wants to help. But I have found, especially lately, that bringing things forward can be very healing. I don’t have a lot of very intimate friends or a partner that I can chat with so instead I put my thoughts on paper for all of you to read. It seems to really lighten the load for me plus many folks become aware of what I might need and have stepped up to help me out in many ways. For some folks, just chatting openly with your partner is healing. I have received many emails and notes thanking me for my openness with my cancer and kidney journey. It seems to help people realize that a lot of folks are going through some heavy stuff. Just remember that there is a difference between constantly whining and complaining versus openly discussing your issues. And remember to step up and help anyone that you see could use some assistance. It will feel good.

Kinsmen Fireworks In this valley, we do a fantastic job of lighting up the sky with fireworks to celebrate throughout the year. That’s thanks to the volunteers who organize the displays and the folks who donate to cover the costs. The Kinsmen Club accepts donations for their fireworks show all year round, and with Canada Day only a few weeks away they’d appreciate your support. You can donate to the fireworks fund by mailing a cheque to the Windermere Valley Kinsmen Club at PO Box 2039, Invermere, BC, V0A 1K0. Or watch for the donation containers at local businesses, including Valley Foods, and stuff your change in there. I promise you’ll get a big bang for your buck.

Watson’s Waddle I really have to nap lots during the day lately. Rob has this new machine that he hooks up to at night and the thing has alarms going off all night. They are really high pitched beeps that hit a dog right where it hurts: his ears. That thing runs for like nine hours so it covers the whole night (although I have been known to sleep for 14 hours). Rob is up and about a few times during the night trying to keep things running properly and he usually makes sure to wake me up with a little loving scritch. This has been quite the adventure with his sickness. I never know how long he is walking out the door for so I try to stay ahead of him and sit by the vehicle. I just don’t want him to leave me behind any more than necessary. All you dogs should make sure you are there for your humans whenever you can be. It is amazing what a difference some love makes for everyone.

So I am now back in Invermere doing ‘Peritoneal Dialysis’ on a night cycler machine. I hook up to a pretty simple-looking but quite complex machine that will automatically exchange my dialysate (dialysis fluids). The process takes about nine hours every night and is meant for people who sleep a solid eight hours. That is tricky for me. I rarely sleep even close to that. Anyways, I load it up with 13 litres of fluid and it drains and refills my peritoneal cavity five times through the night, drawing out most of my toxins. It and I are still developing our relationship and I get lots of alarms regarding low flow or poor drainage. I have to figure out the perfect sleeping position to keep the liquid pooled near the drainage tube. Generally I will hook up to the machine and then do some paperwork for a couple hours at the start of the cycle. I just really can’t go far and the eight hours can be anytime really. It is tricky to manage my schedule right now.

So the main change I have seen lately is quite a bit more energy. During my first few days of adding liquid to my peritoneal cavity, I gained several pounds. It turns out that I was very dehydrated which contributes to fatigue. Now I can actually walk up a small hill (slowly mind you) without having to stop every 3 or 4 steps. I am also already enjoying the luxury of being back in my own home. It is nice to be able to not have to worry about bothering my Mom in her place in Castlegar. That was very tight quarters for eight months. I have not yet swung a golf club but I am hoping that one of the side effects will somehow affect my usually poor performance. I will be forced to swing softer so that should help. I will just be happy to get out and about.

The Thrifty Reporter I admire people who can think outside of the box or in this case... outside the toy section in our local Invermere Thrift Store. On one of my weekly visits to the store I overheard a customer talking to her friend how the small bridge she just found in the children’s toys section was just perfect for her fairy garden. Now that is thinking outside the box. I am sure there are many, many items in the thrift store that could spark a creative project and all for a great price.

My Progress So I am still not sure about the effectiveness of the chemo but I am down to only 3 cycles of five hits each left. September 18 is approaching. Yay. I am now set up with the oncology department in Cranbrook rather than Trail. They are actually directed by Kelowna which has a very specialized team with multiple myeloma, my form of cancer. I am looking forward to meeting up with my new team and learning a bit more about my progress. With the home dialysis happening, I will only have to travel to Cranbrook once a week, generally on Tuesdays, unless something special is happening. That is a huge relief from the 4 or 5 days in hospital every week since last October. I am hoping to get caught up with the paper, fishing, sleep, golf and dog walks. Life shall be as good as it can for sure.

Where else do you get to showcase your business to thousands of folks with little or no cost? It is almost as good as being in The Valley Peak haha. For my whole life I have seen and heard folks mocking (or judging) people wearing socks in their sandals. With a pair of shorts on, it is quite the fashion statement although it has never bothered me. Well now that I am just another old man, I have made a discovery. With my kidney issues, fluid can build up in my body, especially the ankles and feet. So I often have to wear these diabetic socks that massage the feet in such a way to help move the fluid out of them. And I love to wear sandals. So I should be making an interesting fashion statement many times through the summer. I hope you enjoy the show

There’s no shortage of fun stuff to do in the valley, from golfing to ziplining. A card’s always nice. Who doesn’t like getting actual mail? “I’m afraid that your cheque came back,” said the nurse to the elderly gentleman. “That’s good,” he replied. “Tell the doctor so did my arthritis”.
Property addressed with an even house number are permitted to water on Tuesday’s and Friday’s between the hours of 4 am to 10 am and 7 pm and 11 pm.
There are plenty of definitions of what makes you a “local” in the valley, depending on how long you’ve lived here, whether you grew up here, how much time you spend in the valley, etc. Or maybe a “local” is anyone who embraces valley culture, even if they’ve only been here one day. Locals drive carefully down main street, stop for pedestrians, and are patient with the newbies at Dysfunction Junction in downtown Invermere. Locals volunteer, and donate to causes when they can. Locals pack out their garbage, they put out their campfires, and will stop to buy from a kid’s lemonade stand. Locals say “Hello” to strangers, we offer help to people who look lost, and we drive 30 km/h in school zones to protect our kids. Locals care about our community. ‘Local’ doesn’t have to be a divisive word. We can all strive to be a local, every day.
A new “day” begins at 12:00 a.m. (midnight).
No sprinklers or irrigation systems are to be operated between the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

Beer Fest
What’s Up
The 7 Annual Fairmont Beer Fest is coming up next Saturday, June 16. They have a lot of great breweries registered already. It happens from 4 to 8 pm at the Fairmont Ski Area. Enjoy beer and cider tasting, live music and an after party in the chalet.
Sorry for the small print in the What’s Up section on page 12. There is just too much going on in the valley these days so it is difficult to squish it all in there. Enjoy.

Roast Beef Dinner This week’s Friday night dinner at the Invermere Legion is roast beef with Yorkshire puddings and all the fixings. Dinner is at 6:30 pm and often sells out so get there early or make a reservation. Try the meat draws and the 50/50 draw while you are there. You may as well come away a winner. Remember to check out Texas Hold’Em Poker on Thursday evenings at 6:30 pm. It is a friendly group of folks who would love to have you contribute $35 or so.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows an important annual gathering. It is from last year’s National Aboriginal Day coming up in June this year.

Radium Days Coming up on Saturday, June 16 in Radium. Enjoy the parade at 10 am and all kinds of activities after that at Legend’s Field. Take in the Brit’s Best car show, market, barbecue, music, kid’s zone and more.
Breakfast When we’re out and about and needing breakfast, those yummy breakfast sandwich combos are sometimes the only thing that will satisfy. Other times, it’s a plate of bacon, eggs and toast. And sausage, and fried potatoes, when you hit up Kootenay Coffee Works at the crossroads in the morning. They also have breakfast wraps and breakfast sandwiches to go with your morning coffee, all made fresh and on-site, plus baked goods, toast and bagels. Swing in at the lights next time you’re craving real food and check out their menu. They have outdoor seating when you want to enjoy the sunshine.
Aging Time may be a great healer but it’s also a lousy beautician.
Station Street Pub The Station Street Pub has extended their hours for the summer. You can now enjoy their handy location and beach view from 11am-11pm, Monday to Sunday. The patio is a great place to relax with a cold drink and snacks, and watch the water.

One of the things about being sick is that you really don’t want to walk around looking really sick. You want to look as normal as possible so you can carry on. It is interesting to see how many folks tell me how good I look right now. Believe me, it takes a lot of work to put this package together every day haha. Have a great week and realize there is no such thing as completely normal.
Stage 2 Watering Invermere is on Stage 2 watering restrictions which means we can only water twice a week on very specific days. Find more details on the restrictions on page 10.
