Recently I started a 4 week diet plan with all the meals laid out for me. I am very impressive. I was able to finish that plan in 11 days.
Halibut & Chips Every Friday, at ‘The Grill’ at Windermere Valley Golf Course, is a great fish and chips special. Real fish. Halibut. Yummy. Stop in any day at the restaurant for a delicious meal. I think their wings are some of the best in the valley. AnD you may as well do some golfing while you are there. Windermere Valley is a nice course. It is affordable, walkable and very player-friendly.

I came across a pretty good saying this week. I am not sure who penned it so I can’t give credit, but it was not me. “Success is not the key to happiness; happiness is the key to success.” To me that makes total sense. Really, I think that that is what success is; happiness. If you are happy, you are leading a successful life. You do not need to make a ton of money, or to own the latest and fanciest truck on the market. You just need to enjoy your life every day. And that is totally up to you. I know that I write about this quite often but that is because I truly believe it. I never feel that I need to ‘get ahead’. I would rather enjoy my activities today than worry about what might happen next week. It may catch up with me some day but in the meantime, I am enjoying life “How are you doing?” people ask. “Busy and broke, but living an incredibly rich life,” is my answer. And it’s true. Get out there and enjoy yourself. We were not put on this planet to work all day, be miserable and go home for a couple hours before bed and doing the exact same thing tomorrow. Life is lots of fun if you let it be.

Watson’s Waddle I have a new friend in my life. ‘Hendricks’ is a puppy living in the suite below us. He is pretty big already and has really long legs. He is part boxer so he loves to use his legs when we are playing. I have really had to pick up my game. He loves to run and wrestle and, well, it turns out that I am not as young as I wish I was. We are having a lot of fun and getting lots of exercise. Dogs are pretty awesome with each other. Hendricks is pretty large but very young. I have to be a bit gentle when we wrestle. And it’s great the way he can be so gentle yet persuasive. He nips at my ears or at my heels to get me interested. It is cute. Rob and I still do lots of walking. Our new place has brought on some new territory to explore but is close enough to the old place that I still see my old friends. A dog’s life can be a pretty good life.

There were plenty of firsts. The first canned beer was sold, the first pair of male briefs were sold by Coopers, the first major league night baseball game took place, the world’s first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were the first Western team to win the Grey Cup and Amelia Earhart was the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean. Nearly everyone loves fireworks and Canada Day in the valley always brings an incredible fireworks display on the night of June 30, at midnight. It helps get you inspired for the festivities on July 1. Here in the valley, the fireworks are managed by the Kinsmen Club of the Windermere Valley. It is one of the best shows that you will see anywhere and people from all over come to Invermere just for this celebration. Do your part and make a contribution to the Kinsmen for the show. Fireworks are costly and great fireworks are particularly expensive. Donate to the change boxes at local businesses, drop it off at Local View Printing & Design or mail it to Box 2039, Invermere, B.C., V0A 1KO. Thanks.

Wow life sure can get busy and I find more so in the summer. I have noticed that the town is getting busy with many activities happening. There are many more people visiting and enjoying our beautiful valley. There is just so much to do! This also includes the Invermere Thrift Store. The store is bursting with lovely merchandise. When you take time from your activities to stroll the Main Street, stop into the store. The prices are excellent and you could chance on a sale. You might even find that certain thing that you have always been searching for.

DTSS BAND CONCERTS THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 7:30 PM CONCERT BAND, STAGE BAND
I have said it before and I will say it again. With Father’s Day coming up, a perfect gift for Dad is a hot shave from Patrick, the Shamrock Barber, at Invermere Barbers next to the Laundromat. For the father who has everything (any father really), a hot shave is a unique and thoughtful gift. Or just a haircut. Both Mike and Patrick do a great job with your hair. They are affordable and work on a first come, first served basis so you just drop in for a cut. They are good guys with lots of pleasant conversation to keep you engaged during your cut.

Tips from the Pro How do I rid myself of the duck hook? This unfortunate shot is often the result of the same swing that causes a slice, except in this case the clubface is closed at impact. To fix the duck hook you will need to change your swing direction so that the club is delivered on a path that is straight through the ball. More importantly you must keep the clubface from closing. On the backswing focus on opening the clubface like you would open a door so that it has a better chance of getting back to square at impact instead of closed. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Mosquito Season So far this year, mosquitoes have not been too bad, but they are out there. They can be very annoying. Last year I tried a mouthwash, Epsom salts and beer mixture to keep them away. It was actually quite effective at eliminating mosquitoes for a good length of time. This week I was given a new suggestion. Cut a lime in half and insert whole cloves into the lime. Place these around your sitting area and the mosquitoes should disappear. It will be interesting to try.

The world is a crazy place these days. There are lots of violent attacks including the one at London Bridge that took the life of Christine Archibald, a 30 year-old lady from Castlegar. Her grandmother lived on my street and taught me in Grade 1. She was just being a tourist in London. Anything can happen to anyone anytime, it is true. But don’t let these things affect your life and your attitude. Get out there and be happy and do what you love. Enjoy every day, help others enjoy their days and have a good life.

A fantastic job by all the volunteers and organizers of Canal Days. The whole community came together for an amazing weekend. Lots of people attended and had lots of fun. They are doing a great job in Canal Flats keeping the spirit of the community alive.
Food for Thought ‘On the Back Burner’ is a relatively new saying, with the arrival of multi-burner gas and electric stoves. Cooks got into the habit of placing plans with slower cooking ingredients on the burners at the back of the stove. They would keep the ones needing more attention on the burners at the front. Before long ‘the back burner’ was being widely used to indicate something that is not the top priority.

Canada Day Parade Because everyone loves a parade, or at least I do, this is just another reminder to get on building a float for this year’s event. Canada 150 is a big year so we should have a big parade. Where else do you get to showcase your business to thousands of folks with little or no cost? It is almost as good as being in The Valley Peak haha. The time is getting closer so plan your parade float soon.

The photo on page 6 shows a large group of folks and a big screen saying, “Thank You Volunteers”. It was a luncheon to thank all the volunteers who help out at Columbia House. Thanks to Watson, the Bassett Hound, I was included. Thanks to COHO and the Legion for lunch.
Solo What do you call a guy named Lee that has no friends and is always alone? Lonely.
Watermelons I had never been a big fan of watermelon until the last few years. Now I am addicted to them. Especially if they are the perfect ripeness. But how do you know? Check the yellowy spot where it rested on the ground. If it has a tinge of orange to it, the melon is more ripe. Check the stem. If it is green, the melon was picked too early and will not be ripe. Look for brown, dry and shriveled. Check for a bit of the brown ‘webbing’ lines. More lines indicate more pollination of the flower before growth leading to a bit more sweetness. And remember that the round melons are ‘female’ and a bit sweeter than the ovalshaped ‘male’ melons, which contain more water. Enjoy.
A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca

Dandelions There is a huge crop this year. The Columbia Valley is doing its part in supporting the world’s declining bee population. Sometimes I glance at my yard and feel a bit guilty for all the dandelions but when I look around I see many more in lots of places. To some folks they are a weed, but to me they are a cute little flower with an awesome ‘golden-rod’ colour which matches the logo for The Valley Peak.

Busy Times Moving definitely sucks. It does not matter how far you are moving or why, the actual acts of packing, loading, transporting, unloading and unpacking (not to mention cleaning) are a lot of work and very timeconsuming. This has been a lousy adventure for me as I have years’ worth of stuff accumulated and although I planned to purge lots, it is hard to let everything go. Plus fishing is great in May and golf season is on but I have been too busy. I have tried to do it without asking for much help but it has turned out to be quite cumbersome and depressing.
Quick Closure For the first time in 10 years the ‘Options for Sexual Health Clinic’ will be closed on a regular clinic night. They are usually open on the first and third Tuesday of each month and will be back to that in July (4th and 18th). There will be no clinic on June 20. Thanks for your understanding.

There is still a lot of snow in the mountains and with a mix of rain and hot weather, it can come rushing down as water very quickly. Our creeks and lake are already quite high and could easily reach flood levels. Creeks and bridges can become pretty dangerous. Lake Okanagan is so high that boaters are being asked to stay off of it as waves and wakes will do damage to the shoreline. They say that not a single boat was seen on that lake last weekend. It could be very interesting in the East Kootenay area as well. We shall have to wait and see.
Open for Lunch It is always nice to have a spot to go for a tasty lunch. The Copper City Saloon in the Best Western Invermere Inn is now open for lunch 7 days a week. They open at noon daily with some wonderful menu choices. Watch for daily specials. Enjoy.
Great Experience I finally got in a day of fishing this weekend. Moving has really affected my leisure time. Anyway, I met a young gentleman while getting gas and he was headed to the same lake. He helped me mount the motor on my boat and I suggested he come visit me on the lake if he is having issues catching fish (some days I do okay). Eventually him and his girlfriend did come by and tie up to my boat. They used my rods and caught a couple fish. It was nice. As it turns out, he is an NHL hockey player. He was very humble and I had to draw the information out of him. I don’t watch a lot of hockey and am not a big fan but yes, I am feeling pretty good about teaching him and his girlfriend how to catch the odd fish. They were both so gracious. A great day.
High Waters Be careful out there folks. The water levels all around the province are pretty high. Including this area.
