Rockies Hockey Great work by the Rockies to win game 4 over the Kimberley Dynamiters by a score of 1-0. The goaltender was very solid and the crowd support was incredible. Kimberley has defeated the Rockies in game 5 by a score of 5-1. The Dynamiters now advance to play the West Kootenay winner. The Nelson Leafs also eliminated the Castlegar Rebels in 5 games. As I go through my daily adventures I see thousands of things going on. Different people doing different things that allow them to continue on their journeys. The important part of this is that it is their journeys, not mine. What they are doing has nothing to do with me. It is sometimes hard to realize that fact. Many of us think that it is ‘all about us’. We think that everything happening around us is related to our lives. A lot of folks smoke on the ‘No Smoking’ property of the Trail hospital. Staff members, volunteers, patients and even security guards. It is interesting how that bothers some folks. It actually ruins their day thinking about it. For me, I couldn’t care less. I don’t see how it has any negative effect on my physical life so why would I let it take up any of my emotional energy. The moral of this story? It is pretty basic really. Enjoy your life and live it however you please. Make yourself happy. But don’t worry about what others are up to. Do not concern yourself with the ‘lame’ things that others are doing as it is not worth the stress it gives you. Just be happy and let others be happy with what they have going on.

So things seem to be picking up around here these days. It has been a tough few months as a dog in this house. A lot of cuddling with Rob when he was really ill, comforting his Mom when she was sad, dealing with too much snow for a good walk and more. I really had to pick up my ‘man’s best friend’ game. Now we see some sunshine and green grass out there. The weather is picking up nicely. Rob is feeling much stronger so he is out and about quite a bit more. The walks have really picked up. We visit an incredible dog park every couple days and do lots of walking otherwise. Rob needs it for the fresh air and exercise and well, I don’t really want to get too chubby from just lying around all day. As we are coming into stronger and healthier times, I realize how awesome it is to be able to be there for these humans. Pets are all about love, giving it and getting it. People need love, more than they realize. We all need it. If you are an animal out there that is lacking love, consider adopting a human. It will be a very rewarding experience and both your lives will be changed for the better.

So they called my situation ‘acute kidney failure’, meaning the cause was unknown and there may be a chance of recovery. It came on quickly as I had missed the symptoms. Our kidneys clean the toxins out of our blood. That includes many waste products that can harm the body if they build up. So that is why there is dialysis. Dialysis is the process of cleaning the blood with an artificial filter. They literally hook me up to a couple lines and run my blood out of my body, into a filtering system and back into my body. They are able to control how much sodium, potassium, fluids, creatinine, etc, that they extract each time. It is quite amazing and it makes me feel much better. The kidneys run 24 hours, 7 days a week so dialysis is an ongoing adventure. In order to keep up it has to happen 3 times a week for 4 hours each time. It really requires some tricky scheduling and it is a lifetime project for many people. I shall tell you more about my specific dialysis journey next week.

My Progress This past week has been quite fantastic. I seem to be adjusting to the chemo and have started to regain some energy. I am due for a blood test tomorrow but as it stands I am doing okay. Last results showed a bit of improvement in numbers indicating that I am generating some blood. That is an indicator that the cancer may be receding somewhat. As for the kidneys, no sign of recovery at this point. I am still processing fluids but no toxins. I have eaten a lot of asparagus lately and my urine still comes out like water. It is a bit disappointing but allows me to move forward. So moving forward involves surgery on April 13 to install the peritoneal dialysis line which allows me to filter out my toxins at home. Peritoneal dialysis is a bit cumbersome and requires a very involved patient who is aware of sterile environments and more. The patient has to be capable and willing to take on their own care on a daily basis. I can’t wait. And it beats the heck out of driving to Cranbrook hospital 3 times a week for hemodialysis. That is my main barrier with getting back to Invermere, the travel to Cranbrook. I would need a better vehicle. Anyways it is nice to have an idea of what might be ahead. Things do change quickly but being able to look ahead and sort of make plans is wonderful.

I had a person tell me that her chemo was the worst on the third cycle and it seemed to level out after that. I am into the fourth cycle now and I would have to agree. My brain and body seem to have adjusted to what is happening. Most of the side effects are still there but they don’t seem as prominent. Balance seems to be the biggest issue. I should mention the awesome light shows that I get to experience. Upon closing my eyes I always get a few seconds of flashing lights and shooting stars. It is pretty cool haha. Anyways, at this point I am actually feeling pretty good about this journey. Things do seem to be improving in the way I feel and what my body is doing.

The Invermere Coffee Festival was a tremendous success. The Coffee & Tea Expo had more than 250 attendees and every one of them had a great experience. The Calgary Heritage Coffee Roasters were voted ‘Best Coffee’ at the Expo and Jeremy Ho was the most popular workshop leader. Logan Count won the ‘Art of Coffee’ contest. The Static Shift The young rock/blues band that played on ‘The Launch’ is definitely on its way. They will be backing up Collective Soul this summer during the West Coast part of their tour. The Static Shift has performed here in the valley in the past as part of the Steamboat Mountain Music Festival and at The Station Pub. They are definitely some talented young rockers.
Paralympics I enjoyed watching some of the Olympic Winter Games last month. It is great watching that much effort and spirit. But I find the Paralympics even more interesting. The sports are awesome and the athletes are equally amazing. Canada does well at the Paralympics. It is too bad that the folks in charge of television programming are not as inspired by this event as the rest of Canadians are. It would be nice to see some more of it.

Start of Spring The Spring Equinox happens on March 20 this year.
