Sandy Cook Cancer Fundraiser Cancer is rampant in the world, including the Columbia Valley. This community has been phenomenal in helping out those folks in trouble.

Sandy Cook is in trouble and needs our help. She has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone marrow cancer) and must go for chemo before she is eligible for stem cell treatments. This is all very expensive.

Sandy has been a wonderful volunteer within our community. She is that ‘average resident’ who gives much and has very little for herself. She has been a huge part of the Rockies volunteer base for years.

We can choose to be the person that we want others to be. The respectful, helpful, fair, positive, light-hearted person that fills a space with good energy. All we have to do is make a few changes on how we think and act. The changes that you want around you must come from within you.

Older Workers Skill Training The College of the Rockies is running a Targeted Initiative employment skills training for older workers. To be eligible you must be 55-64 (50-54 and 65+ in special circumstances), unemployed, legal to work in Canada, live in this region, require new skills and be ready and committed to work.

Participants may receive class-based skill development, funding for other training, income support during the in-class portion of the program and targeted wage subsidies for on-the-job training.

This program is a great opportunity for folks to improve their lives.

Everyone is so friendly. There is usually a group of folks hanging out in the lobby area and they all want to give me a rub. They laugh at my huge ears and feet and I feel so loved when they gather around and talk about me.

The staff are all very friendly also. Many will take a few seconds to say ‘Hi’ as they carry out their duties.

I think some of the residents in there are a bit lonely sometimes. Make sure you stop in and visit your friends and family members.

Shoot a game of pool, have a cup of tea or just hang out. You can make a wonderful difference in someone’s day.

Reel Paddling Film Festival The Reel Paddling Film Festival is the world’s largest paddling film festival. There are amazing short films on all types of paddle sports; canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, kayak fishing and MORE! The CV Arts Cinefest presents ‘Our Loved Ones’ on Tuesday, March 22, 7 pm at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre.

It is a touching film which follows the effects of a father’s suicide on his family over the next 30 years. The granddaughter discovers that she needs to break the cycle.

Spring Equinox The equinox is when the Northern and Southern hemispheres get the same amount of sunlight. For us in the North, we enter spring and our daylight hours become longer each day.

Patrick was a kidnapped by Irish raiders and worked as a slave shepherd until he found God. He escaped back to Britain and became a priest after which he returned to Ireland where he worked to convert thousands of pagans to Christianity.

His efforts against the Druids led to the elimination of slavery and human sacrifice in Ireland. He died on March 17 which has become a day of celebration.

Lenten restrictions are removed for the day leading to great celebrations of food and drink. He used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the holy trinity so it has become a symbol of the day.

Junior B Hockey The Kimberley Dynamiters have eliminated the Fernie Ghostriders and the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. They will be facing the Beaver Valley Nighthawks, who have defeated Nelson and Grand Forks.

Both teams have lost only one game in the playoffs so it will be an exciting, hardfought battle.

Gather the kids and the baskets for the first annual Invermere Easter Egg Hunt. It takes place next Saturday, March 26, 10 am sharp at Kinsmen Beach. There will be a separate hunting area for the younger and smaller kids.

This is a free event sponsored by the District of Invermere. There will be lots of chocolate to be had.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows a really cool trophy featuring a Canada Goose. It is the B.C. Girl’s High School Curling championship trophy. It is currently in Kimberley as they won it. These are the girls that eliminated our girls from the zones. A very strong team.

Library Fundraiser The Invermere Public Library is hosting Burn’n’Mahn Dueling Pianos as a library fundraiser on Saturday, April 2 at the Invermere Community Hall.

These two fellows are phenomenal. I have seen them twice and was extremely impressed both times. They can play virtually any song by request from the audience.

Plus they are very funny and entertaining.

There will also be a silent auction, a wine grab and a 50/50 draw. Tickets for this fabulous fundraiser are $35/person at the Invermere Public Library, Best Western Invermere Inn, The Trading Post, Meet on Higher Ground and the Purple Cow.

Barbara Graham's Last Wish In 1955, Barbara Graham was executed at San Quentin for murder. Barbara and four accomplices gained entrance to a house, where a gambler's fortune was said to be hidden. None was found.

When they left, the owner was dead. Barbara swore her innocence. About to die, she cursed the men connected with her conviction.

Shortly after, two were executed, one was murdered, one died in a boat crash and another in a traffic collision. The DA and the judge died from cancer and the prison warden had a heart attack.

The best tip I can give is to just have fun out there this time of year. The muscles are a bit tighter, the ground is a bit harder and the balls don’t fly quite as far. Don’t expect to burn up the course. Just enjoy it.
