March 7-13, 2019 Volume 17 Issue 10 No Paper Next Week Sorry folks but I need a week off. I will be travelling home with a nurse, a technician, my Mom and my sister to set up my dialysis ‘ward’ in my house and will not have the energy to focus on The Valley Peak. So my best advice is to read this issue really slow or several times during the next 2 weeks. All current client ad contracts will be extended by one week. Thanks for being kind and understanding.

Hot Stuff “Dad, are we pyromaniacs?” “Yes we arson.”

Community Fundraiser The community is rallying for Darren Rieffenstein, who lost everything in a fire recently. Darren is a great guy in a tough spot. A little burnt out apparently. A fundraiser is being held at the Wilmer Hall on Saturday, March 9, from 6 to 11 pm. There will be live music by the Chisel Peak Blues Band, a silent auction and food.

Paint Night at Taynton Bay Want to learn some acrylic painting skills? Sign up for a Paint Night, and you’ll leave with new art for your wall.

The Saturday, March 9 event starts at 7 pm, with a featured green and black “Forest Fox” painting. The $55 cost includes all supplies, some snacks and spirits. Call 342-6663 to sign up.

Mountain of Hope Fundraiser There will be a special screening of the film “This Mountain Life” at the CV Centre on Sunday, March 10, in support of Mountain of Hope Society. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Popcorn and refreshments will be available by donation. Special guests Tania and Martina Halik will answer questions after the film. Tickets are $12 at the door, or $10 in advance at Syndicate, Ullr and the Panorama Ski Patrol Clinic. Thanks to the Panorama Ski Patrol for organizing this fundraiser for a fantastic society that helps out so many local folks in our community.

Online Events Listings This valley is always hopping. To help spread the word about what’s going on in our communities, we’ve added an Upcoming Events webpage to www.valleypeak.ca. NO ISSUE NEXT WEEK NEXT ONE MARCH 21 ENJOY THIS ONE

Another reminder that there is no paper next week as I am deeply engulfed in setting up my own dialysis ward in my house. It is going to be incredible and I am inviting anyone who is interested in seeing what it is all about to contact me and come by to watch a session of dialysis. I would like my doctor to fully see what I go through, maybe some home care nurses, the paramedics that may have to save me, any first responders in the valley that are interested or even anyone interested in what kidney failure can look like. Believe me, you may have an idea of the concept, but really no idea of the full process. And well, if something did go terribly wrong, you will be the people that I will be counting on. I am thinking that likely will not happen, but hey, it has in the past. I cannot thank the Kidney Foundation and the B.C. Renal Agency enough for the efforts and expenses involved in keeping many of us alive. There are a lot of folks in kidney failure out there. Thousands of good people whose lives could be changed with a new kidney (I have to sneak that in here on occasion).

Rockies Hockey That’s all folks. The Rockies playoffs came to an end in the first round, thanks to the Fernie Ghostriders. Fernie will go on to face the division-leading Kimberley Dynamiters. Kimberley defeated Golden in the first round. Good job by all the fans supporting the Rockies this year and a solid season for the team. Being in Castlegar, I didn’t get to attend any playoff games this year as the Rebels did not make the playoffs. Ouch, haha. Good luck to all the surviving teams.

Watson’s Waddle There is no issue of The Valley Peak next week so there is lots of information in this issue. I am really busy next week so I won’t have time to get an article done, therefore, no paper. We have been on the road lots and I have really focused on an important part of it. You really have to travel with treats. Good, tasty ones that add to a delightful day of traveling or visiting. I can tough out a pretty long day with just a few short walks as long as I am getting some love and some snacks. I am looking forward to getting back to Invermere to my own territory and all my friends. I love that community. The treats there are pretty sweet.

What Year Was It? The Euro was officially adopted by 12 European countries, the Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth passed away, Kelly Clarkson became the first American Idol, Robert Pickton was arrested in Abbotsford and Spider-Man was released. What year was it? See page 10.

Winter Operations

Medical Help

The District of Invermere would like to remind everyone to take extra care while travelling during the winter season.

“I really don’t like this hospital,” said the patient. “You treat us like dogs.” “That’s absurd,” replied the nurse. “Now roll over.”

Residential and commercial driveway entrances and sidewalks are the responsibility of the owner to be cleared of windrowed snow and ice to the degree that the mobility of vehicular and pedestrian traffic shall not be compromised.

12 Strings Classical Music La Cafamore will return to Christ Church Trinity on Saturday, March 23 for an evening of string trio works by Piazzola, Dohnanyi and Beethoven. Tickets are available now for $20 at Inspire Flowers. The music begins at 7:30 pm. This talented group includes a cellist, violist and violinists. It’s always a fantastic evening with La Cafamore.

CITIZENSHIP

Here’s how you can help... Be a good neighbour. Do not park on the street during a snowstorm or while snow clearing operations are underway. Pile snow on the right side of your driveway (when facing the road) if possible when shoveling. Remove snow from around fire hydrants on or near your property to enable quick access by emergency personnel if the need arises.

EDUCATION

The District apologizes for any inconveniences caused by snow removal operations.

EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING

For further information, please telephone the municipal office at 250- 342-9281.

My kidneys are not coming back. That has become very apparent. My cancer is into remission enough that if someone offered one up, they might start to consider it within a few months but I am not really sure. Conversations get a bit vague and well, there are only 35 million extra kidneys in Canada, it might be hard to find a match. So with no kidneys, life is tough to survive. It requires a lot of medical attention, particularly in the form of dialysis. The nearest dialysis centre is in Cranbrook. During my current time in Trail I had dialysis 4 days last week and this is the best my bloodwork has been since 2017

I need lots of dialysis. Four times a week, four hours each time, is optimal. That is a lot of Cranbrook trips and time. Too much for me. So I am training to bring it all home. I can do it in the comfort of my own home. Still lots of time involved, but at home, here in Invermere. So this training is critical to my well-being. I do not want to live in a larger centre. I kind of enjoy it here. My life will not be perfect, but it will be as good as it can be and that is all I can ever hope for.

GOOD WORK ROCKIES! Thanks for a great season! The Columbia Valley Rockies would like to thank everyone for their support this year. It takes a lot of volunteers to run the team. Many businesses & people sponsor. Support has been FANtastic. The coaching and management staff did a great job. Thanks to the staff at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.

My Progress So I am training on a home hemodialysis machine. I will be drawing my own blood out of my body, running it through an artificial kidney system, and then returning it. It is an amazing process. It is very scary. The training is very intensive. Because I think I am a smarty-pants and due to all the travel, they have agreed to cut the time from one month down to two weeks. I have to pay attention. There are a lot of steps involved. Connecting or disconnecting, arterial, venous, saline, dialysate, heparin, waste and sample lines, plus 4 bags of saline and using at least a dozen syringes. Every time. I have worked hard at understanding the whole concept which helps me remember the steps and why they are done. It takes me more than an hour to get hooked up and running but that is due to being over careful and thinking it through each step. It will be 45 minutes at best though. Lots of alarms to learn, a couple of which can have some crazy consequences. I am lucky to have such great nurses training me, one of which will be coming to Invermere to make sure my first home run is out of the park.

Romantic “My husband is so romantic,” she said. “Every time he speaks to me he starts with ‘Fair Lady’.” “Romantic? Didn’t he used to be a bus driver?”

Water Wise Did You Know that this time three years ago, the ice was almost completely thawed from Columbia Lake? The Columbia Lake Stewardship Society has been keeping freeze and thaw records of Columbia Lake since 2002. To date, the earliest thaw has been in 2016 on March 4th, and the earliest freeze has been in 2017 on November 7th. This winter looks like it may end a bit later. When do you think the ice will thaw? K.W.

With my increased levels of dialysis this past week during training, I am feeling quite good. Better than I have for a long time. My urea and creatinine levels (two tough toxins) are being cleared nicely. It is all I can ask for. It has really helped with my energy, balance and strength. Everyone I chat with can see it in my colour and energy and makes a comment about it. It feels good. With the lower toxin levels my body is healing up a bit more from the chemo also. My appetite is returning which is good. My myeloma is currently at bay. I read an article supposedly from John Hopkins Cancer Centre discussing how chemo will knock back a tumour at the beginning but becomes very toxic in the long term After that it is all about healthy eating and building your immune system. And from my perspective, a little shot of cannabis oil.

St Patrick’s Tea & Bake Sales Dress in your best St Patrick’s day green and celebrate with a tea and bake sale (or two) on Saturday, March 16. There are two events planned to mark the occasion and raise funds. One is at Christ Church Trinity, hosted by the Valley Gogo Sisters raising funds for AIDS orphans in sub-Saharan Africa, with admission by donation. The other event at the Radium Community Centre in support of the Edgewater Radium Healthcare Auxiliary, with a $6 admission. Two great ways to spend an afternoon, in support of two great causes.

It Was That Year (From page 4) In 2002, the average house cost $228,700 and the average annual income was $42,400. Queen Elizabeth celebrated 50 years as Queen, the Mars Odyssey found ice (water) on Mars and Kmart became the largest U.S. retailer to file for bankruptcy protection.

There were still tickets available for the annual Lake Windermere Rod & Gun Club Banquet and Dance on March 17, which is always a sell-out, spectacular event featuring a buffet of wild game. The club has been around for 100 years and continues to make a huge difference to our valley with their volunteer conservation work and programs. Come celebrate and support these local hunters and fishers at their annual major fundraiser. Tickets are $50 ($30 for kids 17 and under). The evenings starts at 5 pm, with dinner, a dance, a centennial celebration, raffles, silent and live auctions, draws, door prizes … It’s a party.

Cost of Living When I was a kid, Mom would give me a dollar to take to the store and I could come back with 4 chocolate bars, 50 sour candies, 50 blue whales, 2 bags of chips, 10 packs of sweet tarts, a can of pop and more. You can’t do that anymore. There are too many security cameras.

Local Parent Advisory Committees do so much for our schools. Head to the Horsethief Creek Pub on Sunday, March 17 to support the Edgewater School’s PAC, when 15% of all that day’s food sales will go toward their extra-curricular activities, lunch programs, school supplies and more. Accompanied minors will be seated until 8:30 pm and are welcome to stay until 9:59pm, so make it a family lunch or dinner date and bring the kids.

It’ll be a full moon on Wednesday, March 20. Pleiades Spa is offering a special chakra yoga class and guided meditation to mark the occasion, from 7:30 to 9 pm. Participation is by donation. Call the spa at 347-2288 to reserve your spot.

The page 6 photo shows a beautiful larch tree standing alone amongst other coniferous trees. It was on the road to Panorama last fall, a photo I sent it to a friend in Australia asking about fall colours.
