May 24-30, 2018 Shoreline Clean-Up Many of us choose to live in or visit the Valley because it’s just so darn beautiful. Help keep our shorelines clean and safe by joining the Lake Windermere Ambassadors for the annual spring shoreline clean-up on Sunday, May 27, 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Meet your friends or family at your favourite beach -- Kinsmen, James Chabot, Windermere or elsewhere -- and pick up the litter that’s accumulated over the winter. Sign up in advance on the Facebook page, by calling 341-6898 or emailing info@lakeambassadors.ca, and they’ll drop supplies off for you. A waste-free picnic lunch will be generously provided for volunteers by Rocky River Grill at 12:30 pm at Kinsmen beach.

Possibly the coolest volunteer opportunity ever: ride an electric-assisted trishaw (aka a fancy bike) with a senior or less-abled person as a passenger and explore Invermere for 60-90 minutes at a time. The “Cycling Without Age” project started in Denmark and is now coming to town, thanks to local volunteer organizers Blaine (341-1059) and Don (409-4040). Volunteer “pilots” can give as little or as much time as they wish, and don’t need to be super fit. Volunteers age 18+ with a valid driver’s license can call the guys above.

It is so easy for us to get caught up in the negativity or the world and the people around us. We see a lot of bad stuff on the news and a lot of privileged attitudes on talk shows and whatnot. It teaches us to focus on the negative. Anyone can tell you about a problem yesterday or something they don’t like or a person that frustrates them. Anytime. It is what we seem to like to focus on. My question to you is “What amazing thing happened to you yesterday? What beautiful thing did you see? What was a wonderful experience?” Every day we experience thousands of amazing moments that we just take for granted. Just waking up and having that intricate body perform in any way is very amazing. I love my dog and he loves me. The fruit trees are in blossom. The lilacs smell incredible. Blue skies and green pastures. My car started. I had breakfast. A friend called. I met lots of folks on our dog walk. I am alive (that is a big one for me). My last several months have really helped me grow in appreciation of life and beauty. Everything is beautiful if you let it be so. I am sure that I have as many issues as most people, whether it is financial, health, family, work or whatever. And I do focus on them more than I should. But my daily life really changes when I realize even a bit of the great stuff that I am missing.

Watson’s Waddle It is time. I have been writing these articles for 2 years and have not yet talked about dog poop. Yes, that is it. Feces, poop, whatever. We dogs love how humans are so fixated on our ‘bathroom’ activities. Whenever I am in the squat position, Rob is saying “Good boy, Watson, good boy.” And then he is there, picking it up with a bag. He even checks it for colour and texture. I don’t fully understand it, but I quite enjoy it. Sadly, many of our morning walks seem to end as soon as I do my business. But I’m no fool. I have figured that out and I will pinch as long as I can in the morning just to get some extra walking that day. What is really funny is the fact that Rob really celebrates if I do my stuff near a garbage receptacle. It makes for a quick pick up and deposit without a lot of carrying the bag around. It makes him happy. So my advice to all the other hounds and pups out there is to use your poop to your advantage. It means a walk or two every day and if you drop in the right spot, it makes your pack leader very happy. If used properly, it is a great way to manipulate people.
Tenderized My friend told me a steak joke but it was not very well done. A good steak joke is rare. What Year Was It? Beatlemania was born with the release of their first 2 albums, the first U.S. State lottery took place, Lester Pearson was elected as Canadian Prime Minister and ZIP codes were introduced in the U.S. The pull tab can for soda and touch tone phones were invented, the Porsche 911 and the AC Cobra debuted and Patsy Cline died in a plane crash. What year was it? See page 10.

So I have been on peritoneal dialysis for a few days now and it is quite the adventure. They tell me it will help me feel better as my body toxins are being cleaned out daily rather than a power cleaning every 2 or 3 days. It is gentler. The process right now involves 4 times a day doing an ‘exchange’ of clean fluids for dirty ones. It takes about a half hour each time so it goes pretty quickly. The tricky part is scheduling my daily activities around this adventure. I really only have about 3 hours (maybe 4) between procedures so I have to manage that. I have to use a very sterile technique. Any mistake on my part will lead to an infection of my peritoneal cavity. Peritonitis. Ouch. I have actually already obtained a small infection and it is a tough run. Here’s hoping it goes better as I progress.

Reach the Valley Effective marketing is important. You have to reach your potential customers. Many folks go with posting on Facebook. Their 400 friends see what is going on. But actually, most of their friends already know. The Valley Peak reaches more than 2,000 people in the valley every week. People of all ages and backgrounds enjoy the quick, happy read. It puts the readers in a good mood when they see your ad. Effective. And affordable. Very affordable. It only makes sense to spend a few dollars to help your business grow. Email rob@valleypeak.ca for more information. Put your business in front of my readers. It will make a difference.

Side Effects Not much new on the chemo front for me. I am in the process of trying to get it transferred to Cranbrook instead of Trail for easier access for me. I did meet a gentleman the other day who said the neuropathy thing in my hands and feet never went away for him. He always carries a walking stick for balance. It was interesting but also a bit discouraging. And yes, some side effects are permanent. Only 18 more hits of chemo over 18 weeks and I am done, as far as I know. This new daily dialysis is supposed to really help with the fatigue feeling. We shall see if I gain much energy. Not many dialysis patients are on chemo so it is tough to find resources.

The Thrifty Reporter Yes, colourful spring flowers are showing up all over the neighborhood. I love spring when the yellow daffodils, red tulips and many other flowers start to show their colours. This colourful display is a nice change from the white winter months. A couple of days ago I picked a handful to brighten up my dining room only to find I did not have a suitable vase to arrange them in. The flowers were so pretty I wanted a vase that was really elegant so off to the Invermere Thrift Store I went. Did you know they have a wide selection of vases to choose from for a great price?

As it stands, I am only 2 weeks away from moving back to the Columbia Valley. That is part of the new dialysis. Next week I get trained on a ‘night cycler’ which will allow me way more freedom during the day. After nearly 6 months of basically dropping out of my life, it will be nice. A lot of things will change in how I live including my eating habits and the way I do my work. I will have to find a way to carry on with The Valley Peak without being stressed and overworked each week while still affording to house and feed myself. I have a lot to catch up on as far as the billing and client relationships go as I have been so far away. That will be nice. Anyways, I am hoping to see a lot of all of you shortly. I am excited.

Proportional Representation
WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED TIRES ON RIMS.
In November, B.C. voters will decide whether to switch to a “proportional representation” model for future provincial elections. Proportional representation means that the percentage of seats a party has in the legislature will reflect the percentage of people who voted for them. Fair Vote Canada BC will host a meeting on Saturday, May 26 at 3pm at the Invermere Library to discuss why a “YES” vote in the referendum might be a good choice. Here’s your chance to get informed before you vote in November.

Breakfast Time What makes up a good breakfast? It is an important meal that kicks your body into gear for the day. Start your day right. Water is good anytime. Get a glass of water into you just to get the body and organs lubricated and ready to roll. Fibre and carbohydrates are good. A bowl of sugar-free cereal (all-bran) or porridge is a good start. Add a bit of milk, maybe some fruit or walnuts and you have a tasty, wholesome breakfast. Or a piece of whole grain toast with an egg or two is also fine. Just limit the butter and maybe have a bit of fruit on the side.

Creston Asparagus It seems that asparagus has become one of my favourite vegetables. Especially fresh asparagus coming from Creston at this time of year. It is delicious. AG Valley Foods will be stocking Creston asparagus this week. It is one of their many partnerships with local suppliers. Watch for many local ‘Edibles’ as you visit the store. Local produce, sauces, pastas, preserves, chocolates and more. Thanks to our local grocery store for supporting our community and providing outstanding products.
A great venue for events of all sizes. Up to 600 people on the floor. Up to 120 people in the lounge. 250-342-3315 invermerecurling@shaw.ca
It Was That Year (From page 4) In 1963, a new home cost $12,600, a car cost $3,200 and the average annual income was $5,800. The first NHL entry draft took place, Alcatraz was closed and JFK was assassinated.
It Is Your Own Energy Incredibly, everything that we perceive in this world is a reflection of our own energy. If I see someone out there and think, “That person sure can be a jerk,” then it is very likely that no matter how that person acts or speaks, I am going to perceive them as a jerk. If I look at a task at hand and think, “This job sucks and is going to take forever,” then that job will suck and will drag on. On the positive side, acting on this knowledge can change your life. Put the happy, positive thoughts and energy out there and so many happy, positive things will come your way.
Attire “And the award for best neckwear goes to … huh. Would you look at that? It’s a tie.”
Sandal Season I realized quickly last week, with my feet sweating in wool socks, that winter was finally over and it was time to pack up the boots and switch to sandals. For some of us, that means pedicures. Judy at Simply Nails does pedicures and “gel” nails (my female friends tell me this is a good thing) on days, evenings and weekends, so if you want your feet and toes to look their best give her a call at 341-5245.
Don’t Be a Litterbug More people enjoying the Valley in the summer months usually means more litter on our beaches, trails and streets. Please help keep our area beautiful and clean for everyone to enjoy and clean up after yourself. For bonus karma, pick up after others.

Happy Birthday It is my sister Darlene’s birthday this week. May 26. She has been a huge support through my health issues and I really appreciate it (most of it anyways). So a very happy birthday to you Darlene. I know you will see this online.
Dandelions There is a huge crop this year. The Columbia Valley is doing its part in supporting the world’s declining bee population. Sometimes I glance at my yard and feel a bit guilty for all the dandelions but when I look around I see many more in lots of places. To some folks they are a weed, but to me they are a cute little flower with an awesome ‘golden-rod’ colour which matches the logo for The Valley Peak.
Where I Was The photo on page 6 is a washout that could be from any stream in the Kootenays right now. Please be very careful if you are around flowing waters folks.
Where’d the Gravel Go? Our local operations crews have been busy cleaning up the streets this spring. Thanks to all the folks who worked hard to remove the sand and gravel. They’ll be busy making repairs, building infrastructure, repainting lines and curbs, and doing other important jobs over the summer months. You make us look good.

ten. Think about it. Reinforce your thoughts often. It will make things happen for you.
Angry Earth The world is going crazy again this year. It seems that every year there are more and more natural disasters such as flooding, fires, volcanoes, avalanches, earthquakes, tsunamis and more. We have been blessed to be in this amazing area with relatively few issues so far but remember that anything can happen at any time. Be prepared with an emergency kit and an idea of where you would go and what you would do if things were happening here.

Canada Day Parade It was pretty recently that July 1 seemed like a long ways away. But now it is pretty much only a month from now. Are you ready for a great celebration? It will be a great parade. Do you have your float prepared? Or are you at least thinking about it. The parade is a great way to promote your business or organization while contributing to the community. It’s a nobrainer really. I hope to see you all there.

Blizzards in May There’s nothing better in 30-degree heat than a blizzard from Dairy Queen. The flavours have come a long way since the Smarties and Skor of my youth: current feature flavours include cotton candy and caramel brownie. Their drive-thru is open from 11am to 9pm, so head to Athalmer the next hot day and grab a cool treat.
Present I gave my friend an elephant for her room. She said: “Thank you.” I said: “Don’t mention it.”
Put It Out There I have found that the best way to obtain something, whether a new place to live, a new job or whatever, is to put that energy out there. I have recently seen some amazing examples of this concept. Talk about it. Talk to God. Talk to your friends, family and neighbours. Talk to yourself and remind yourself about it. Of-
