May 26-June 1, 2016 Volume 14 Issue 22 Friday at the Station This Friday night, May 27, get out to the Station Neighbourhood Pub to enjoy ‘Big Eli B’ and his awesome band. Eli Beingessner is an amazing musician who can light up any room with his guitar skills. He is a local lad that has developed tremendous talent playing with his father, Marty, and many other local talents. The Station will be packed on Friday with Eli fans so make sure you get down there early to get a seat. The show is at 9 pm.

Longtime Friends Two elderly ladies were playing cards together as they had been doing for years. “Please forgive me,” said one lady. “But I have forgotten your name. Can you tell me what it is?” The second lady looked really frustrated and said, “How soon do you need to know?”

Home Soccer Tournament This weekend will be busy in Invermere. The local soccer association is hosting a tournament at Mount Nelson Athletic Park and at the schools.

NEW ADVERTISER! 1. Roller skating

When I last heard we had 52 teams registered. That will be a lot of visitors in the valley as each team will have at least 10 players plus coaches, families and more. Welcome everyone. Enjoy the valley. And thanks to all the volunteers who put this together. It has grown very quickly as you do such a great job.

Horsethief Creek Happenings Canadian recording artist Joseph Forrest is making a stop at the Horsethief Creek Pub for ‘Live Music Monday’, May 30, 7-9 pm. “A student of jazz and classical and the son of a bluesman; his background is eclectic to say the least. He has been described as a stir crazy, energetic songwriter. Serious. Jokester. Joseph batches together opposing flavours in the tastiest way, brewing up tunes like a madman. Sanity is subjective. He keeps his music exciting, throwing curves.” Thanks to Mike at the Horsethief for providing such a great venue for so many different musicians and events. Watch for an upcoming comedy show in June.

Riddliculous We all have different of strengths. For those who love our language, I ask, “Can you think of a 9-letter word that contains only one vowel? See page 8.

So Sad “Why are so down?” asked the bartender. “My wife and I had a fight,” answered the patron. “She quit talking to me for a month.” “That’s not so bad.” “Oh yes it is. The month ends today.”

BIG ELI B THE STATION FRIDAY, MAY 27

Saturday, June 4

Life does not seem to slow down much for myself and many other folks. Busy, busy, busy, trying to get everything done and keep a tiny bit of cash in the bank. Keeping up with household chores such as yardwork, laundry and cleaning, trying to do a little bit for the community and just trying to find time to lay back a bit can really fill up a week. For me, making sure that I find some joy in everything that I do is a huge part of it. I don’t mind being busy if I am enjoying what I am doing. That is probably why some of the chores get ‘slightly neglected’. Unfortunately I can let some things slide a bit too much and then the tasks begin to overwhelm me. Then stress kicks in and I just want to go lay down and hope for sleep to take it away. That doesn’t seem to work very well. But I have found it is more effective to just take that first right step. Get started on one job and the tasks will shrink quickly and take the stress with them. Find some joy out there.

See me after the show,” states pianist Carolyn Cameron. Advance tickets are at ‘Avenue’. Adults $15, students/seniors $12 and children under 12 are free. Tickets will also be available at the door.

This is a typical day in my life and my thoughts about it (quantity of treats may vary daily). Wake up time and lots of nice scritches from Rob-I really love morning rubs. Outside for a pee and a sniff-I totally love going outside. Back in for food and water in my dishwoohoo, I love breakfast. Rob’s a bit busy on computer so I will just lay beside him and rest-I love being near him. He moved his chair so I’m going to jump up and hope for a treat-I love treats. More scritches-I love it. I will stand by the door hoping for a walk-It worked, I love walks. He opened the car door-I love car rides. Hey, this is dog beach-I really love walking here. Back home for a rest-I love it. Is that supper I hear?-I love having supper. Another walk is in order with my full tummy -I really love these evening walks. Rob is getting ready for bed. I wonder if I look just right will he let-Yes, I love sleeping on the bed and hearing my human breathing. I can’t wait until tomorrow-I love my life.

The Columbia Valley has an incredible network of hiking and biking trails throughout the whole area. “Who takes care of them?” you ask. Well, it is good-spirited folks like you and me who have formed the Summit Trail Makers Society. They are a group of volunteers who are happy to promote active lifestyles in the valley. Just like you. Their Annual General Meeting is this Monday, May 30, at 7 pm at the David Thompson Secondary School theatre. There will be presentations by Joe Lucas (Utah National Parks) and Mark Halwa (GeenwaysWestside Legacy Trail). Everyone is invited and more great volunteers are always welcome to come and check it out.

The Thrifty Reporter Invermere is a great senior’s community and being that I am getting close to that 65+ age I really appreciate this fact. Quite a few stores have a senior’s day, including the Invermere Thrift Store. You need to be over 65 to participate in this shopping experience, giving people with scooters, wheelchairs, canes or walkers a chance to explore the store without the traffic of regular hours. It is held the first Wednesday of each month. So...Wednesday, June 1 at 2-4 PM is Seniors’ Shopping Day. Remember you must be 65 or older!

Shaving is one of those things that guys generally do on a regular schedule. It is really not very exciting on a daily basis. But a hot shave from an actual barber is a different story. It is invigorating and relaxing all at once. It feels incredible to be pampered (in a bit of a manly fashion). A hot shave would be a fantastic idea for a Father’s Day (coming in a month) gift. Go see Patrick or Mike at Invermere Barbers and pick up a great gift for the man (or men) in your life.

Careful with Your Campfires This is a new season of camping and over all, things are pretty dry out there (although recent rain has helped). There have already been several fires in British Columbia (and Alberta) and there really has not been a lot of lightning. Human-caused fires are bad. A lot of unnecessary expenses and resources are used up. Be careful with your campfire. I will review the compliance regulations next week or so. I can tell you now that being out of compliance (fire too large, unattended, etc.) has a new fine of $1,150. So be wise and respectful please folks.

“What’s wrong honey?” asked the husband. “I’m feeling nauseous from riding backwards on the train,” replied the blonde wife. “Why didn’t you ask someone across from you if they would change seats?” “I couldn’t. There was no one there.”

Car Club There is a car club here in the valley. The Columbia Valley Car Club gets together on the second Friday of every month at Rocky River Grill (Super 8 Breakfast Room) at 6 pm for dinner. A meeting follows at 7 pm. Anyone can attend. They have set the dates for the car show in Radium as September 16 and 17. That will be another wonderful adventure.

Geared Up Thanks to the Station Neighbourhood Pub for their ‘Gear Up for Fort Mac’ fundraiser last Friday. Over $3,000 was raised through the efforts of some local firefighters, the Small Town Dirtbags and other volunteers. The place was packed and a few folks (myself included) got to experience putting on a firefighter’s outfit as quickly as possible. I never met my ‘opponent’ Brittany before and haven’t seen her since but she was half my size and twice my speed and agility. Justin Atterbury defeated Gerry Taft in the final match-up. It was exciting. Good job by everyone involved.

Glow Roller Skating I was able to stop by the Invermere Roller Rink (Curling Centre) during the weekend. It was packed on Sunday. It is a great adventure. For only $5 you get a pair of roller skates and a couple of hours to use them. That is an unbelievable deal. Check it out Friday evenings from 7 to 9 pm and Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5 pm.

“No Soup for You!” Unless you are going to ‘Kootenay Coffee Works and Soup Company, located next to Bavin Glass. They have the best soup in the valley. It is made fresh in the restaurant daily with a choice of two favourites. Chris and Erin are very diligent in their soup-making giving them the nickname of the ‘Soup Nazis’ a reference from a great episode of Seinfeld. Try it, you will be very impressed.

Contractor A local contractor came into the hardware store and said, “I need some four-by-twos.” “Do you mean two-by-fours?” “I’ll check. Yup, two-by-fours.” “How long?” “For a long time. I’m building a house.”

friends change often? You might want to have a look inside yourself. It just may be you that is the toxic problem. Some indicators may be: You blame others for your problems and mistakes (believe it or not, even you make mistakes; it’s okay). You talk about others behind their backs (face your issues with others). You rehash comments and conversations (not everything has hidden or negative meanings). You take more than you give (it is good to do things for others sometimes). You have actual enemies (that actually takes a bit of work to alienate someone to the point of being an enemy). You have frenemies (you hang with people you don’t really like for whatever reason). You have no true friends (can you count on anyone out there or have you pushed them all away?). Your life is full of drama (odds are pretty good that you are your own worst enemy, causing all of your own issues). Do better and you will feel better.

Happy Hunters The Canadian Tire store in Invermere has expanded into firearms. This is perfect for all of the hunters in the Columbia Valley. Stop in and check out the new firearms section. As a fisherman, I have always enjoyed visiting the extensive fishing department. They have a huge variety of fishing tackle suited for nearly any type of fishing that you can imagine. Congrats to the new owners on doing a fine job with the store.
