Stay in the positive zone folks. There is a lot of negative energy out there and a lot of people are living in a very negative head space. The problem with that is that the more negative you are, the more negativity comes towards you. We attract the energy that we put out there. So if we spend our time worrying about bad things happening then the likelihood of those things actually happening increases. If we perceive someone as a mean person that person will be mean to us. If we worry about our health then we are likely to have health issues. Life is within ourselves. We are all in charge of our own lives, every moment of every day. We can be as happy and positive as we want to be. If we perceive someone as kind and loving then that is what we will receive from that person. And you know what? Everyone is kind and loving if we allow them to be. In our hearts, everyone is very similar. We all want to live happy, loving lives with good friends and community. Here, we live in an incredible community full of amazing people. It is up to us to be one of the amazing people and to help ourselves and others find the beauty within all of us.

DOG

So it is very apparent that Rob is my go to guy or my ‘pack leader’. I really count on him for my food, exercise, poo pick-ups and a lot of love. It has been pretty tricky lately. During the last few months he seems to take off on occasion. As soon as he is putting his shoes on I am jumping up on him making sure that he is taking me with him. Sadly, sometimes he will say, “Sorry Watson but you have to stay here while I go to the hospital”. That sentence knocks the wind right out of me. I do not like being left behind for any amount of time. If he is gone for very long, I get pretty worried about being deserted. I am lucky that he has his Mom and lots of friends to help me out. Kootenay Kritters has done a great job of keeping me happy and exercised. When I do get him home, I just follow him around, literally touching his leg with my snout as he moves around. I really love him and love to be as near as possible during the day and every night. It is a strong bond we have.

What Year Was It? Hitler became Chancellor of Germany and declared a mission to generate a ‘people’s car’ (later became the Volkswagen Beetle), U.S. prohibition was repealed and cannabis was outlawed. Alcatraz opened, drive-in movies began, Monopoly was released, chocolate chip cookies were invented and Einstein moved to America. What year was it? See page 10.

Family Secrets At what age is it appropriate to tell my dog that he’s adopted?

Bingo Check out the Bingo every Tuesday evening at the Shuswap Band Office at 7 pm. They are using it as a fundraiser for Aboriginal Days on June 22. Everyone is welcome.

So I have done about 10 days of peritoneal dialysis, including a few days in Invermere. It is an interesting adventure at this point as I have to be sitting down at home every three or four hours. The procedure takes about half an hour so I didn’t get to go far from home. But I am definitely finding that I have a lot more energy. I am able to actually walk up a hill or stairs without getting exhausted. Tomorrow I am going for a bunch of tests to determine if this system is being effective in removing all my toxins. It is so much nicer than travelling to the hospital three times a week. I am also training this week on a ‘night cycler’ which is a machine that will do the dialysis exchanges for me as I am sleeping. If I can stay attached for 8 hours at night then I have 16 hours of free wheeling during the day. For me this is as good as it gets for now. I am not really a candidate for a transplant due to the myeloma so home dialysis is fantastic.

Long Day It is a long one. I have run out of unproductive things to do while I am at work.

We have discussed most of the side effects of chemo but I have found a new issue since I have begun peritoneal dialysis. I am adding 2 litres of fluid to my body every few hours and then draining most of it out. Apparently I have been very dehydrated for months so my body is trying to absorb and retain a lot of the fluid. I gained 6 kilograms (13 pounds) in the first four days. That has leveled off now. I also experience a few cramps during draining and filling of my dialysate. As my cavity gets empty, the drain line comes into contact with different tissues and organs. It can be pretty sharp cramps at times. Anyways I seem to have a lot more energy on this style of dialysis so I am really hoping that it all works out with the night machine. That will get my life back to pretty normal.

Old Age Three things happen as you get older. The first one is that you lose your memory. I can’t remember the rest.

My Progress There is not much new in my world of chemo other than I am trying to get it transferred from Trail to Cranbrook. Once a week I will have to travel for a quick shot in the belly and a handful of pills. They have been very vague on my progress but bone scans have shown that things seem to be working okay. Carry on until September 18 and hope for the best. Progress in my kidney world is exceptional. Doing my own dialysis at home has made a huge difference so far and if it works out well I will be moving back to the valley full time next week. That is exciting. I really look forward to seeing if I can swing a golf club. It has been a long spring and summer of not really doing anything very fun, just healing. A huge thanks to everyone who has been helping me out. There have been so many of you that have made a difference.

Grow to Eat Planting doesn’t just happen on the May long weekend. If you hope to eat, say, two lettuce heads a week through the summer, you need to plant two lettuce seeds or seedlings every week. Ditto for sugar snap peas, carrots, and other vegetables where eating them at their peak matters. Another way to spread out the harvest season is to spring plant ever-bearing strawberry plant varieties (like Albion) instead of, or as well as, the June-bearing varieties (like Tristar). There’s nothing better than eating your own fresh food from your own garden all summer long.

Last week I talked about vases for all the beautiful cut flowers. I would like to share another project and yes the containers can be found at the Thrift Store. In my travels I stopped to visit a greenhouse. They are always a pleasure to walk, not only for the sights and smells but also to get ideas for my own planting needs. I just love succulent plants like cactuses and this greenhouse had many with some being displayed in crystal dessert bowls. Yes, I know of a great little thrift store to pick up fancy bowls like these for my succulent plants. The plants will look awesome and at a great price

Wildfire Season So things are already pretty dry in British Columbia. It is a crazy world of fighting flooding in some areas while fighting wildfires in others. In our area, the Fire Wardens have begun patrols. They will be out to chat up the backcountry users regarding safety around campfires. Remember that fires must be contained in a proper pit with a maximum size of 50 centimeters tall by 50 cm wide. Keep water or a shovel nearby and always attend your fire. And please put it out before you leave. Abandoned campfires are consistently an issue in our area. Anyways, please be respectful of the information you receive when you come across a Fire Warden while you are out using the bush areas.

Show your appreciation for our incredible community by volunteering for a set-up or take-down shift on Valley Appreciation Day, Saturday, July 21. It’s a pretty physical job, moving tables and chairs around, but it’s essential to this great annual downtown Invermere event. Set-up happens from 6:30-8:30am (or whenever it’s done) with clean-up from 1-4 pm. To volunteer your time, contact Cortney by email at events@invermere.net or call 342-9281 ext. 1232. Hope to see you there for pancakes.

What a morning this is. The sky is blue and not a cloud in sight. The weather has been incredible for the last couple weekends. Shirt sleeves and shorts were seen everywhere. I even wore shorts and sandals. And it looks like it shall be pretty nice for the next few days. Get outside folks. Enjoy where we live and the amazing weather that we are having. It just feels good.

Birthday List Most folks will deny it but really, everyone likes to hear ‘Happy Birthday’ from their friends once each year. So let me know at The Valley Peak about your birth date and those of any friends or family that you want to torment. Contact information is at the top of each page.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 is more about where I want to be. It is a photo of Watson and I in a little bonding moment while out camping at one of our beautiful back country lakes.

Pop-Up Picnic Tickets Tickets are now on sale for the 4th annual Mountain Al Fresco, an outdoor picnic dinner and party for ages 19+ where everything is white, from the decorations and plates to the diners’ outfits. The event is held at a secret location in Invermere, to be revealed at noon on the day of the event, July 7. You can bring your own three-course picnic, or pre-order your food by July 3. Music will be provided by Flint & Feather (folk/roots) and also by DJ Wild Bill. Guests bring their own table decorations and wine glasses. Tickets are $25 and available online at www.mountainalfesco.com. Sounds like the perfect excuse to dig out that white cowboy hat or wedding dress you’ve got in the back of your closet.

Tips from the Pro How do you deal with a windy day? This is the “Wind”ermere Valley, so we have to accept that we will be playing in the wind from time to time. The old adage goes, “when it’s breezy swing easy”. This is true as we tend to overswing in the wind, mis-hitting the ball and creating more spin and a ball out of control! It is best to take more club and swing easy, which not only helps with better contact, but usually flights the ball lower into the wind. Jeremy Johnson, FHSR.

Home Sweet Home So I got back to Invermere for a few days last weekend. It was a very busy few days just catching up on parts of my life. I didn’t get out much. An incredible experience was walking into

my house. Groups of ladies from my Church, with their friends had been to my home to clean it up. They did a great job. They also put fresh food in my fridge including some prepared meals. It made for a much easier trip home for me. I really have to give them a special thanks.

Camping Season How often do you make it out to a local lake or campground in the summer? The prep work can seem daunting: check the trailer’s propane, unearth the tent in the storage room, pack up the stuff … But once you’re out there, with the campfire burning and maybe a filthy kid or two riding their bikes everywhere, the dog snoozing in the shade, it’s so worth it. It can be even more fun with friends nearby. People come here from all over the world to spend a night in our forests: we’re the lucky ones who can do it anytime.

Cheers to the Volunteers Thanks to everyone who came out for the Annual Shoreline Clean-up. It’s incredible how much litter and garbage can build up over the winter months. And on behalf of the volunteers: thank you to Rocky River Grill for the delicious lunch.
