It is hard to fathom the things that many of our wartime heroes have been through and witnessed. But it is easy to realize how important these men and women have been to our country and our way of life. My father was in World War II, storming the beaches of Normandy. He lost many friends during that time. He also made some very close, lifelong ones. Most of us are very lucky and will never have to deal with any type of war and fighting. We live everyday benefitting from the efforts of our serviceman with the freedom of many choices. November is National Veterans’ Month and this Friday, November 11 is Remembrance Day. For many it is a just another day off to look forward to. But for millions more, it is a day to step back and reflect on our freedoms and to thank those who have helped us to achieve it. Thanks to those who do step forward and are part of our military and peace-keeping missions. And thanks to all those who have done it in the past. You are remembered. Lest we forget.

Watson’s Waddle Eat, play, love. That is what it is all about for me and most dogs. I guess I could add drink water, exercise and sleep to that short list but it doesn’t sound quite as catchy. I am lucky that I am very well-fed. Rob gives me a healthy dog food and always has some available in my dish. I also get a lot of treats as we travel through the valley. I love to play, especially with Matilda. We will run and wrestle continuously while we are out for a walk. With our short, stubby legs we look like a couple of T. Rexes trying to wrestle. It is quite funny really but we definitely do get lots of exercise while we are doing it. Love? Well that is an obvious one. Everyone and everything wants and deserves love. It feels so good to have someone show they care for you. I get lots of scritches and rubs, hugs, soothing voices, eye contact and more. I can never get too much love. No one can. Sleep is a huge part of my existence. Rob has a tough time understanding how I am happy to just lie around most of the day. Personally, I have no problem getting up from one dog bed, strolling around for a minute and then going to sleep on another bed. A dog’s life can be a great life.

What Year Was It? Michael Jackson passed away, paleontologists uncovered the oldest remains of a human ancestor yet (Ardipithecus ramidus) and NASA launched a photoprobe to The Milky Way to search for extrasolar planets. What Year Was It? See page 10.

Fresh Air My doctor suggested that I get more fresh air and I would feel better. So now I roll down the window in my car everywhere I go.

The Rockies defeated Golden last Tuesday before coming up short against both Fernie and Castlegar last weekend. We are currently 8 points back of Fernie and 5 ahead of Golden for fourth place in the division. Kimberley and Creston are very strong in our division this year, tied with 28 points. Creston is hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup this year, meaning they get a bye into the event so they have put together a strong squad. Kimberley has been solid for the last couple of years. The Rockies are on the road this weekend. The will be hosting Fernie and Nelson next Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19. The Creston Thunder Cats will be here on Tuesday, November 22.

November 11. Remembrance Day is a day to buy a poppy and proudly wear it. It is a day to take a few minutes of your time to remember....to remember the freedom we enjoy in this country and how it was achieved. On Remembrance Day, members of the armed forces (soldiers, sailors and airmen) are commemorated. It marks the date and time when armies stopped fighting World War I. on November 11th at 11 am in 1918 (the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month). Canada lost some 100,000 Canadian soldiers during the First and Second World Wars alone. To give the volunteers time to participate in the ceremonies, the Invermere Thrift Store will be not open until 1 pm on Friday, November 11.

American Election

Shooting Stars

As this issue goes to print, the Americans are going to the polls. I have to admit that it has been a crazy campaign. It is total negativity. For a country to spend billions of the taxpayers money to force them to choose between two completely corrupt, out of touch candidates, while thinking that they are the pinnacle of freedom, is totally nuts. I really don’t even understand their system but I don’t see anything good coming out of it. I anticipate a lot of U.S. migrants coming to Canada.

Most meteor showers are caused by the Earth’s orbit crossing paths with a debris trail from a comet or other space object. Although they look like ‘shooting stars’ high in the sky, the particles are actually burning up in our atmosphere only 60 to 100 miles from the ground. The Earth is moving so fast that the energy generated by a piece of debris hitting our atmosphere is incredible. Many of the ones we see are actually as tiny as a piece of dust that we would barely see with our naked eyes here on Earth. Space and the Universe are pretty cool.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 shows a piece of glasswork from Bavins. It is a Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award. You can see one at Palliser Printing or at AG Valley Foods.

Winter Wonderland Market There is a magical market coming up next weekend at the Invermere Community Hall. The Winter Wonderland Market will run Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19. Plan a visit to the market to check out all the wonderful vendors and the items that they have for you.

Headed South I have seen a lot of Canada Geese around the valley the last couple of weeks. Dorothy Lake has been loaded with them. They are all stopping in for a brief rest as they head south for the winter. It is a very long journey. At the same time, many locals are following their lead. This is the time of year that the ‘snowbirds’ begin their journeys. Travel safely and have lots of fun.

Series Champions Congratulations to the Chicago Cubs for their World Series victory. Game seven against Cleveland was very exciting. The Cubs had not won in 108 years. That should give some hope to the Toronto Maple Leaf fans.

Very Wise I was telling my teenager that as you get older you develop wisdom. “You must be a genius,” he said.

Super Hero Curlers The Ladies’ Super Hero Curling Bonspiel took place this past weekend at the Invermere District Curling Centre. Twenty teams displayed their super powers as they tried for the championship. Congratulations to the Vejprava team, the overall champions, winning the A Event. The Patton and MacCormack teams took the B and C Events respectively. It was a fantastic weekend with our local ladies hosting several visiting teams. There were lots of great costumes and plenty of fun times. That is what a curling bonspiel is all about.
