November is a busy month at the Legions with Veteran’s month and Remembrance Day happening. It is important to pay tribute to our veterans. Things get really busy at the Invermere branch (Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71) later in the month. This Friday’s meal (Nov 15) is a pork chop dinner starting at 6:30 pm with the usual 50/50 and meat draws. Coming up on November 23 is the Turkey Shoot followed by a Grey Cup Party on Sunday, November 24. Beyond that comes ‘Sgt Wilson’s Show’ and the Christmas Tea and Craft Sale. You don’t need to be a Legion member to participate in their functions. I will keep you posted as much as I can each week.

Robservations I am never really sure what I want to write about in my Robservations. I have to be very careful not to offend anyone these days. It is painfully strange to live in a democratic country based on freedom of speech and yet to be scared to death about offending someone with every word you say or write. Don Cherry voiced his opinion freely and was fired for it. For being what he considered to be a true Canadian Patriot. I guess his speech was not all that free. Obviously not everyone agrees with his opinion, especially his bosses. Apparently in today’s Canada, free speech means you can say anything you want that agrees with the current platform but if you disagree with any of it you are quickly labelled phobic or a racist. It is pathetic that you cannot defend the values and culture of Canada that you grew up with. My friend was laughing and commenting that I do pretty good keeping most of my opinions out of The Valley Peak. Like everyone these days, I am afraid to offend anyone.
Rolling Along I had a happy childhood rolling down hills in old tires. Those were the good years.
The Station One of the highlights of my week, every week, is Wednesday Night Trivia at the Station Neighbourhood Pub. Make sure you get there a few minutes before the 7 pm start to ensure a table. Some nights it can get pretty busy. Teams of up to 6 players ($3 each) try to take home the prize kitty. Jason Stevens puts together 40 mixed questions with a bit of good humour, a few clues and a good challenge. It is a great test of teamwork and diplomacy amongst friends. And you even learn a few things! The Station has a tasty menu as well. Thursday evening wings are half price at $8/pound. Stop in anytime for an enjoyable experience.
Friday Tastings Don’t forget to stop in at the Copper City Liquor Store in the Best Western Invermere Inn on Friday afternoons to check out their products. There will be no tasting this week but they will be back with more soon.

Watson’sWaddle Hahaha. So Rob found an article called ‘How to Train a Basset Hound’. It is quite well-written and full of funny points so I know he enjoyed the read but it gave away a few of my secrets. First off, I was already ‘trained’ when Rob came into my life. It has taken me 4 years to train him to where I need him to be. You know, keep my food and water dishes full, give me treats, walk me, pet me and so on. It has been a fun journey. What he found out is that I always ‘need’ a treat. We Bassets practice our woebegone looks when our humans are not around. He is also figuring out that I am a bit smarter than I like to let on. I just like to really weigh my options before making any rash decisions. I am much more stubborn than I am stupid, that is for sure. It is part of my charm. With my large body but low center of gravity, he has also figured out that I am very strong and hard to force into a different direction unless I have decided that is an acceptable plan. And I love to just stop in the middle of every doorway or gate to make it that much more difficult for him to pass through. It is a fun little game I play while pretending it is unintentional. Although Bassets are by far the most intelligent animals, all dogs are much smarter than you think and we love to fool you every day.
What Year Was It? Lots of debuts this year, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Pepe Le Pew, ball point pens, clock radios and Elvis (at age 10) made his first public appearance. France joined the United Nations, the microwave oven was patented and Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to an unheard-of 4th term before dying of a stroke. What year was it? See page 10.

My counsellor noticed a bit of an improvement in my mental state this week. I have been out and about a bit lately and it feels pretty good. And I have really tried to focus on what I am thinking and saying while I am out. As I mentioned last week, so much of our happiness is based on our own attitude. Am I happy that I am on dialysis and have bone marrow cancer? No, not really. But I am happy to do dialysis at home and that the cancer is in remission. Very happy. I just have to remember that part of it. I am very blessed. I am also happy that it is happening to me rather than some of my friends or family. I wouldn’t know how to deal with it otherwise. With me, I am able to write about it also. That seems to connect me to a lot of people with issues of their own and helps both them and me. This is great filler for the paper. That makes me happy. When I think back a year and how I was thinking that may be it for me, I am doing phenomenal right now. Not the perfect life but a pretty blessed one. And every day is all about how I look at it.

My Progress I had a great night curling last week. I can’t get down in the hack and deliver like I used to but was able to throw rocks with the stick and do some sweeping. It was fun. I tire easily and did get a bit off balance a couple times but I just have to be careful. I have a toque with a head protector in it for safety. I have to accept that I will always feel fatigued during physical activity. The creatinine (muscle waste product) just builds up too quickly without kidneys. So my life is all about planning ahead. When we are out for a walk I have to calculate every downhill whether or not I will make it back up. I still tucker out a bit on the basement stairs here in the house. I am great on level ground though. Not much of a runner but I can get around no problem. Like everything, it is all about accepting my limitations, maybe even celebrating them. This last year has been very good with my healing. Thanks to all those who have helped and tolerated me in that time.

One of the stranger side effects of all my health issues is just the thought processes that my brain likes to go through. Of course I can dive into a negative pit whenever I feel like it but that is not the best place to be. An interesting factor is just how I see so many things now. I am not really afraid to say what I am thinking or ask for what I want. And it is amazing at how much that honesty frees my soul. It is hard to describe. I also find my attention span is way shorter. Life is short and mine is deemed to be shorter than usual so I can quickly lose interest in things and want to move on. I hope that is not offensive to people but really, who cares? Not me much. My life is a lot more pleasant if I avoid drama. I think about all the things I wasted time worrying about that had so little effect on my life. So yes, facing mortality has really changed the way I look at life. I have sorted out a few things that are important to me and otherwise I just have to let life happen and enjoy it.

Rockies Hockey
Sheblime Roofing
Another strong weekend behind the Columbia Valley Rockies as they took 3 out of 4 possible points including a win over division rival Fernie. The Rockies have been playing strong hockey lately. This weekend they travel to Fernie on Friday before coming home to host the North Okanagan Knights on Saturday, November 23. The Knights have 7 wins in 18 games this season. All of the Saturday game times are 7 pm. Get down to the arena and join the crowd cheering on the Rockies. There are some great draws and contests including a chance at a nice 50/50 prize. A loud crowd is always a huge boost to the home team. Let’s go Rockies!

Riddliculous Answer The Thrifty Reporter Button button...who has the button? I remember that game, do you? I also remember my mom had a button tin with so many cool buttons. One of my favourite things to do as a child was to play with the button box, a treasure trove to a small child. They were great for counting and sorting into colourful piles. Other uses were to make art or use to embellish items. If you need a button or two then a good place to shop would be the Invermere Thrift Store. They have an amazing assortment of buttons.

Up Your Attendance How do you reach nearly everyone in the valley? A few posters can reach a few hundred. The same with a Facebook post. How many residents are actually your Facebook friends? Not as many as you would like to think. The Valley Peak is printed into 1,500 copies each week. Many are read by more than one person. That means that nearly 2,000 readers see each issue. Ads are as low as $25 each. Really? To reach 2,000 people? That is a pretty good price to get the word out.

Holy Holiday Season Folks
WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED TIRES ON RIMS.
This is issue 46 for 2019. That means we are in week 46, more than halfway through November. There is just over a month until Christmas. I haven’t even thought about Christmas yet. Other than considering outdoor decorations. Time really flies in this world. Take advantage of your time. Find some joy and spend time wrapping yourself in it.

As soon as you enter the doorway, your senses take over. ‘From Scratch, A Mountain Kitchen’ in Fairmont is an exciting place to be. It looks amazing inside and the familiar sounds of talented chefs preparing meals is very comforting. But your sense of smell really takes over. The sweet scents of several specialty foods fill your nostrils and get your mouth watering. And your taste buds won’t let you down. They will be very happy with the experience, as will you and your friends. From Scratch offers top-notch catering services and specialty cooking classes also.

Family Spaghetti Dinner I love spaghetti, just saying. This Sunday, November 17, head out to the Edgewater Community Hall for a family spaghetti dinner. Doors open at 4:30 pm and the dinner is at 5 pm. Gather your family or a group of friends and come support the Edgewater Recreation Society. Tickets are $10/person or $25 for a family.
Men’s Issues Men and women have a lot of different issues. That is obvious. One that I have problems with each winter is when I am wearing so many layers and I feel the urge to go pee. It is very tricky getting into that zipper and finding another layer and not knowing if it is an undershirt tucked down or your long johns pulled up. Every layer is overlapped and it is like solving a puzzle while under growing pressure. Yes the issues of being a man hahaha.

eral years now, fifteen or so. I have learned the exact time frame to get it done. I usually pick at it a bit through the week and then bear down hard on Sunday and Monday. So adding dialysis into the picture has changed the game quite a bit. I lose half of one of those days each week. So here I am on Sunday night trying to get enough writing done that I will be able to finish tomorrow. It is a bit awkward working on the laptop on dialysis so I can’t count on that time for much. Time management is definitely a big part of life.
Physics Light travels faster than sound. That is why some people look much brighter until you hear them speak.
Help Please What is a great way to add joy to your daily life? It is to go into every situation wondering what you can do to help make it better. The key word is help. If you spend your day doing little favours and improving the days of others, your days will go very well. You will achieve inner happiness. Really.

Bacon Bits I love bacon. To me it is the most universal food that is out there. It goes with just about anything. BLT sandwiches are incredible and I am pretty sure that I could eat one every day. It is also a great addition to burgers and more. Sorry, that was just some random food thoughts. Sadly this was an article I wrote 2 years ago, just before kidney failure. I am now very limited on bacon (and tomatoes) so my BLT sandwiches are few and far between.

Fireplace Safety It is the time of year that many of us in the valley are burning wood to stay warm. I love the steady, comforting heat coming from a wood stove. How is your chimney looking?
