A Desert Gem...

W

elcome to Oliver where the peaches are sweet, the wine is stellar and the locals are as warm as the sunshine. We invite you to book a tee time, spot a rare bird, taste our finest vintages, compete in a race or tan poolside and enjoy the serenity of a small town. The town of Oliver is tangible proof that dreams come true and the efforts of one person can make a difference in the world. Oliver is the northernmost tip of the Great Basin Desert stretching all the way from Mexico. Former B.C. Premier John Oliver had a vision of a place where returning WWII vets could make a fresh start with their own piece of earth. The expansive irrigation system he brought to reality combined with fertile land and the hospitable desert climate have resulted in a prolific area for producing high quality grapes, tree fruits and ground crops. Oliver boasts two world-class golf courses and more than 27 wineries. We are within easy proximity to dozens more wineries, several golf courses, beaches and parks. Outdoor enthusiasts can snag a trout at one of our scenic lakes, take a long bike ride or hike highlands, lowlands and grasslands. Enjoy a great meal at one of our excellent restaurants and a good night’s rest at one of our motels, B&Bs or campgrounds. During your visit enjoy our shops, fruit stands and marvel at our diverse landscapes. Thanks for coming. We’re happy you’re here. Cover photography by Russell Work. f the sun is shining (and it does about 2000 hours a year in Oliver), it’s a good day to pick up a set of clubs. The South Okanagan comfortably boasts the longest playing season in B.C. just short of Vancouver Island. Golfers pining for their day on the links will find a tee time from March to November. Oliver is fortunate to have not one but two excellent golf resorts on its roster, each offering a unique perspective of local terrain. Nk’Mip Canyon Desert Golf Course is a championship 18hole course owned and operated by the Osoyoos Indian Band. Nk’Mip translating loosely to “flat bottom land at the mouth of the creek or river.” It is designed for all levels of player ability and offers more narrow fairways, amazing vistas and unexpected elements to add challenge. The clubhouse offers a stunning display of artistry in architecture and houses their pro shop and restaurant. Canyon Restaurant at Nk’Mip was voted Best New Restaurant and Restaurant with the Best View by Okanagan Life Magazine in 2009. It has an expansive patio offering panoramic views and great meals to diners, well deserving of the moniker ‘Best”. Fairview Mountain Golf Club cloaks 160 acres of mountainside overlooking fertile vineyards and orchards. It is a par 72 course with wide and fast fairways and its fair share of elevation changes. This challenging and memorable golf course was designed by renowned Les Furber. The dining room at Fairview Mountain offers excellence in ambiance and food. It offers both fine dining and casual meal choices and inside or patio dining with spectacular views no matter which side of the restaurant you are seated.

Five local favourites

1. 2.

If you have a craving for something sweet, soft and ever so slightly sticky then head over to the Oliver Bakery for their popular six ounce apple fritters. They are big enough to split three ways but one bite and you won’t want to share. Baker Wayne Jones bakes and sells four to six dozen a day but don’t leave it too late in the afternoon to stop by. You won’t get a better donut anywhere. Also notable at the Oliver Bakery are its pastries, breads and excellent light breakfast and lunches. If you are looking for a good read to take down to the beach or poolside check out the Oliver Used Bookstore at 34848 97th Street (South end of main street). The store is run by the Southern Okanagan Association for Integrated Community Living and offers a selection of used books at seriously bargain prices (fifty cents to a dollar).

Music Bingo is a popular draw at Murphy’s Pub on Tuesday nights and is usually accompanied by an awesome dinner special and small prizes to make winning fun. You’ll have loads of laughs and may just surprise yourself with how many songs you remember. If you haven’t sat in a big traditional small town theatre, Oliver has a treat for you. Check out the flicks on the big screen at the Oliver Theatre built in 1947. Foreign film nights are all the rage in town Wednesdays, January through March and generally fill the theatre to its 302 seat capacity. Top the night off with movie popcorn served the oldfashioned(and the best) way with real butter. Tuc-el-Nuit beach is located off the beaten track and right in town on, you guessed it, Tuc-el-Nuit Lake. It’s a great family beach complete with a sandy swimming area, a playground and picnic tables.

From mine town, to wine town

L

egend has it that Oliver credits its existence to a pair of footloose prospectors who made the original discovery of gold in the area in 1869. From humble beginnings developed the mining community of Fair view on the benches above Oliver, in its time one of B.C.s largest towns. As the gold rush waned so did the town of Fairview with a new townsite being established where Oliver now stands. In the background orchards and a ranching industry were flourishing in its fledgling stages. Jesuit Father Pandosy of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate thought he might try planting some fruit trees at his Okanagan Mission in 1863. When local families saw the trees flourish they also planted small stands and by 1890 the Okanagan’s potential for orchards was clear. In 1918 directed by the vision of then Liberal Premier Honest John Oliver the provincial

government purchased 22,000 acres of land in the South Okanagan to construct a 25-mile long irrigation system, known to the locals as the Ditch. It was Oliver’s vision to give returning World War II servicemen something to come home to. Servicemen gratefully took on the five to 10 acre plots and relaxed payment plan and built a community that would last. John Oliver and his dream were honoured with his name on the town. The population of Oliver grew from 500 in 1921 to 1800 in 1932 and developed a bustling industry in cantaloupes, cucumbers, tomatoes and fruit at one time boasting itself to be Cantaloupe Capital of Canada. Those five and 10-acre plots continue to burst with fruit blossoms in the spring manifesting the sweetest peaches and apricots, juicy cherries and plums and apples. Ground crops flourish as does a maturing wine industry that allows Oliver to moniker itself Wine Capital of Canada.

liver not only claims the title of Wine Capital of Canada, it also remains undefeated in the Guinness World Record for producing the world’s largest cherry pie. The Oliver Rotary Club and helpers baked the 17.11 tonne pie (37,721 pounds) on July 14, 1990 sticking a fork in the previous record held by Chef Pierre Bakeries of Traverse City, MI at 28,350 pounds. All the ingredients and labour were donated by Oliver locals. The technical detail of designing and creating the world’s most gigantic

pie pan was admirably met by local Ernie Rotheisler. He built it in two sections that were welded together on site at the park over top of a dug-in propane cooker. A make-shift oven was then constructed over the cooker. The local baker provided dough and volunteers began rolling it out in squares at 3 am. By 10 am the dough was laid and 96 45-gallon drums of cherry pie filling were poured in. After several hours of baking it was time for the community to have its pie and eat it too after successfully capturing the prize of a world record.

See... Swirl... Sniff Sip Savour A

trip to Oliver would not be complete without taking the time to exercise the five S’s: See, swirl, sniff, sip and savour. Our idyllic little pocket desert has earned its title Wine Capital of Canada by producing about 10 percent of the nation’s wine and much of its finest vintages. Glacial deposits formed the west bench, monikered The Golden Mile in the ice age. Deep sandy deposits on the east bench made Black Sage. The result - two unique soil and growing terrains that unite to provide a prolific and award-winning wine industry. More than 27 wineries call Oliver home from large operations like Vincor (Jackson Triggs) to family-run estate wineries like Golden Beaver Winery Inc. and Stoneboat Vineyards. Some of our smaller wineries sell exclusively from their tasting room that you won’t want to miss out on. More than 100 vineyards along the highway through Oliver and its backroads present a romantic leafy green tableau that makes up about 53 percent of B.C.’s vineyard acreage. Sommelier or layman, you will find a day, (or two or three) touring and tasting our whites, reds, sparkling and ice wines to be romantic, enlightening, possibly educational and a lot of fun. Some charge a token fee usually for ice wine or high-demand bottles. A number of wineries also open their doors and offer complimentary tours of their facilities. It’s a great way to be introduced to and surely gain a higher appreciation for the art of the vintner. Choose your favourite wineries and plan the day or just meander the benches looking for winery signs and stop where the whim takes you. If no one wants to commit to drive for the day why not contact Desert Country Wine Tours and let them do the driving for you while sharing their knowledge of the local wine industry and its producers. Either way, a daytrip to the wineries is a guaranteed holiday hit.
