Light Up Parade

778-526-5233

To our valued customers and friends. Due to the requirements of legislation, we will be having our last day of medical cannabis sales on October 16th. Unfortunately, our doors will have to remain closed as we continue our due diligence throughout the application process. The BC government will have an online ordering system so people will have access to cannabis while the licensing system moves into effect and stores are approved. We will be posting regular updates on our website, as well as information on our progress. Thank you again to all our customers for your support and encouragement. You have made this a wonderful experience.

www.greenpeakmedicalcannabis.com

If you’re thinking of entering a float or walking in the Light Up Parade on November 17, give Cortney a call at 342-9281 to register. The parade starts at 6 pm and is a big tradition here in the valley, as part of downtown Invermere’s light up events. It is a great opportunity to put your business or organization in front of a lot of people. Lots of local businesses and groups pull out all the stops to make their parade entries the brightest and most dazzling. Think you have a bright idea for an entry this year? Call Cortney.

Riddliculous What do arctic penguins and peacock eggs have in common? What gets larger as you take more away from it? What should you keep after you give it? What was the longest river in the world before the Amazon was discovered? See page 8.

Winter Clothing Drive It’s time to unpack the winter gear, see what fits, and pass along the stuff you’re no longer using. Family Dynamix is happy to take any gently used (or new) winter clothing off your hands. They’ll give it to local folks who need some help staying warm over the coming months. Drop off your donations of coats, toques, mitts, socks, thermal layers and more at 1317-7th Avenue in Invermere.

Wow! Another strong weekend for the Rockies at home. They won both games, defeating 100 Mile House and Beaver Valley. That puts them at 9 wins and 2 losses. They are in first place in the Eddie Mountain Division of the KIJHL, overtaking the Kimberley Dynamiters. The Rockies are on the road for the rest of October. They will be visiting Princeton, Osoyoos, North Okanagan and Golden. I wish them luck as they are undefeated on the road this season. Thanks to all the fans at the home games. You have been making a huge difference, inspiring the players to play just that little bit harder. I hope to see you all at the rink during November.

Robservations Okay, I am not sure why, but The Valley Peak has been getting some incredible positive feedback lately. This issue is one of the fullest issues, as far as advertising clients, in the past year. I have become pretty passive at selling ads. I will put the odd note in here reminding folks it is a good place to advertise but that is about it. The paper seems to sell itself lately. I have also been getting a lot of notes from people who have visited the valley and found The Valley Peak during their journey. Some read it very thoroughly and compliment many aspects of it. Often they contact me months after visiting with great feedback. This really helps the website hits grow. Locally most of the comments are around Watson’s Waddle (he is a much better writer than me) or around my health issues. Although every week I go through an internal debate on whether or not to write about health, every week someone thanks me for doing so. They say the openness helps with their own health issues. So anyways, I hope you continue to read and support The Valley Peak. Please thank my advertisers for their support and do your best to support them.

Well-Conditioned I remember the day I was in class learning about how Pavlov conditioned dogs to respond to a bell for dinner and thinking, ‘Whatever, this is silly’. Then the bell rang and we all ate lunch.

Watson’s Waddle So this is one of my favourite times of year. The air is crisp with the morning frosts so it is so refreshing to get out for a walk. The coolness feels great on the pads of my feet and in my lungs. As the day warms up, more and more scents are released for my enjoyment. Some walks go pretty slow as I want to stop and smell the ‘roses’ about every five feet. Eventually Rob gives up and puts me on the leash. I don’t really mind the leash. Mine is a nice retractable one with lots of leash on it. I get pretty free reign unless another dog or a deer come into sight. Then Rob has to hold me back a bit. I love saying ‘Hi’ to the other dogs but I just don’t like the deer at all. I run and chase them away. Except sometimes they don’t run. Last year I dodged a doe’s front hooves and got around to nip her butt. But last night it was a big 4-point buck. He dropped his head and tried to gore me. Fortunately I am quicker than I look and was able to chase him away. It was a scary moment for Rob.

Kidney Failure

WE HAVE A HUGE SELECTION OF GOOD USED TIRES ON RIMS.

Last week I did a trip to Cranbrook hospital for a session of hemodialysis and to get some bloodwork done. The bloodwork showed that my regime of peritoneal dialysis worked well over a two week period so we are now going to try a month. If things are all good after a full month then we shall be visiting the notion of pulling out my hemodialysis catheter from my chest. That is a pretty big ‘no turning back’ moment in this journey. My kidneys themselves are still toast. Once the dialysis is stabilized I will be asking a bit more about transplants. Rumour is I need to be ‘cancer-free’ for five years to be placed on a transplant list and for one year to even be eligible to find a live donor. Multiple myeloma can’t be ‘cured’ so I will never actually be cancer-free but I am at 95% right now. I will be asking about transplants as I have a teleconference with my renal team in a week or so. So depending on what I learn, you might not want to make eye contact with me to avoid being asked for a kidney haha.

ROAD TRIP TIME The Columbia Valley Rockies are on the road for the rest of October. We will be back in November. Thanks for all of the fan support this season. You make a difference. Like an extra player.

My main goal right now is to regain strength. The chemo is over but with the dialysis thing going on, recovery is slow. Watson has been a big help as I get to take him for 2 or 3 walks daily. I pick the spots so I can determine how many hills I will be climbing. Balance mostly seems to be an issue when I am getting up from a seat. I just have to make sure my feet are underneath me. I was walking on the curling ice surface the other day with no big issues. I guess the problem there is that a fall can be so instantaneous. I shall have to find a helmet. They have some pretty fashionable ones in curling. And I still feel cold very easily. I can be cold in a warm room which is pretty common for dialysis patients. That could also be an issue if I think I want to curl. Overall things seem to be getting better which is all I can ask for.

My Progress Nothing too new or exciting here. Chemo done for a month now so getting a bit stronger. I’m doing well with home peritoneal dialysis so no trips to Cranbrook hospital for dialysis for a month. Plus I am managing it in a way that I have been able to get out to a couple events. Getting out into the community is pretty important to me. Lately I am feeling that I am becoming part of this community again. It is much nicer than sitting in my house having my little pity parties.

Meteor Showers If you have been a regular reader over the years, you are well aware that I love the night skies. I mean, what isn’t there to love? Well October and November are pretty good months for sky watchers. Theo Orionids and the Leonids meteor showers peak on October 21 and November 17 respectively. They will be displaying meteors all through the months so just look up, relax, and hope for a bit of a show. This is also the time of year that Orion rises through the night with Sirius following closely behind.

Mountains of Hope I was able to attend the Mountain of Hope Casino Fundraiser at the ULLR bar last weekend. It was a great evening with an impressive turnout. The tables were very busy. I should mention that I have always loved blackjack. Thanks to the organizers and ULLR for putting on such a great event. All the money raised (100%) goes to people in need in the valley. It is a completely confidential process allowing folks to accept help with dignity. If you or someone you know is in dire need, please contact the Mountain of Hope Society.

Make Play Food with Felt The Invermere Library, which is famous for its great holiday craft nights, will host free monthly craft nights for adults over the coming months. Head to the library on Thursday, October 25 and you’ll learn how to use felt and embroidery thread to create fake food: a great gift for any kid’s play kitchen. The fun begins at 6pm, with all materials supplied. Space is limited for this hands-on evening, so call 342-6416 to reserve your spot.

Free Pedometer Loans How many steps do you walk in a day? To find out, borrow a free pedometer from the Invermere Library and start strolling. It’s a great way to test out the new step-tracking technology before buying your own fitness tracker. There’s a new, free indoor walking program at the CV Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 am to noon: come out and make some walking friends.

One Year Ago Often when I am writing an issue I like to check the same week’s issue from last year. Many events happen at the same time each year and it is a great way to make sure I have not missed something. This week was tough. No issue last year. Instead this was some very intense time in the Trail hospital, not really knowing what was happening. It is amazing how much has happened in this past year. Every year I guess.

Economic Development Understaffing of local businesses, a lack of affordable housing for employees, limited employment opportunities … these are some of the challenges people talk about in our community. Maybe the place to discuss these concerns is at the quarterly meeting of the CV Community Economic Development Advisory Commission, from 10 am to noon at the Windermere Fire Hall on Thursday, October 18. Come hear what the advisory commission is doing to make our valley even better.

Book Club Looking for a book club that actually reads and discusses books? It helps to meet in a place surrounded by hard covers. The Invermere Library hosts a free monthly book club, and everyone is welcome to join. Richard Wagamese’s The Indian Horse is on the schedule for Friday, October 19, from 2 to 3 pm.
