Every Friday is a wonderful dinner that includes all your side dishes, dessert and a coffee or tea. You can also participate in meat draws and a 50/50 draw. The Legion is a fun place with great fellowship. You can always find a game of pool or darts there and Thursday nights are poker nights.

Rockies Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies played some great hockey last weekend, losing to the Fernie Ghostriders but coming on strong against the Castlegar Rebels with a 6-0 victory. This Friday, October 4, the Rockies host the Kimberley Dynamiters. Game time is 7:30 pm at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. The Rockies hit the road for a few games before we see them at home again on October 25. They will be travelling to Beaver Valley, Castlegar, 100 Mile House and Kamloops. Great fan support has brought some decent 50/50 prizes at the games. The food from the concession is very tasty and the hockey is exciting to watch. In other words, get out to the game this Friday and have some fun supporting the Rockies.

How do you meet people in this valley? How do you get a bit of exercise through the cold winters without gearing up to play outside in the cold? Where can I sit with friends for a quiet, affordable beverage in town? Pretty easy answers to those questions. Join curling and be cool (not cold). Throw a few rocks, sweep around a bit and have some fun. This Thursday, October 3 at 7 pm is the registration and annual general meeting for the Invermere District Curling Centre. I suggest everyone comes down and checks it out.

Robservations It is time for me to turn things around somewhat. I have been putting out a lot of negative, whiney energy lately and it is getting old. They say that complaining without offering a solution is just whining and I have been full of that. Really I am incredibly blessed to just be alive with the health issues I have seen in the past 2 years. I have to remember that every day. I don’t like doing dialysis but I am very proud that I am capable of doing it myself at home and I know the importance of it to stay alive. I spend time with an amazing dog. Watson is just full of happy energy and knows how to cheer me up just by coming close so I can touch him. Pure love. If I am going to live for a while yet, I need to enjoy the time I have. Otherwise there is no point. Who wants to hang out with a miserable man? Or be one? This will take some work but I want to get back to who I was before cancer, both physically and emotionally.

Watson’s Waddle So October 1 was the 4 year anniversary of me rescuing Rob. He came and picked me up at PAWS in Creston and the rest is history. It took me a week before I was writing for the paper. I was happy to find the article below, my first ever as a canine writer. ‘Watson the Bassett hound is settling into his new digs nicely. He wants to tell you a bit about himself: Bassets are a unique breed mostly recognized as the ‘Hush Puppy’. We have large dog bodies on short dog legs. We were bred for hunting small game, supporting hunters on foot (hence our short legs so they can keep up). Our huge ears actually funnel scents towards our incredible noses. Our tails have a white tip so you can find us in the long grass. And our skin is so loose on our bodies because we were raised around a lot of badgers. A badger can grab me by the back of the neck and I can actually twist within my skin and fight it off. I will discuss my character traits with you next week.’ It has been 4 great years folks. Thanks for continuing to read Watson’s Waddle.

Mental Health There are a lot of things happening in my life and around the world that stress me out. Sometimes I can get really get down on things. And I know a lot of you feel the same way. But what to do about it? I find staying away from the news helps. A lot of negative propaganda comes from that source. I can live a happier little life here in the valley and not fret too much about distant things. Hugging my dog seems to help lots. Pets are full of love and we all need some of that. Helping somebody always seems to improve my mood and my thought processes. Kindness is good for everyone. Noticing the beauty around us seems to help also. The world is amazing if you see it through the right eyes. And not being afraid to talk about my issues seems to help. I have sought out support from Mental Health. They have been very supportive and non-judgmental.

My Progress Cancer and dialysis are unchanged which is all good. My dream of getting a kidney is not moving fast. I am not sure what is holding all you folks back from offering up your extra one haha. Dialysis is still pretty lonely and boring. If you want to make a difference in my life, stop in for a quick visit during dialysis. It is a long haul at my house every second day. The dialysis bus project is doing okay. A few offers of funding and a bit of help. The guidelines from BC Renal Agency indicate that I need to source enough patients to keep a nurse employed. That is a bit tricky until they all become aware of the service and how awesome it is. It would be nice to change a few lives for the better.

Link to Rink Golf and curling pretty much go hand in hand. Their seasons are opposites allowing participation in both sports during the year. The ‘Link to Rink’ tournament brings the two sports together for a really fun weekend. Entrants play a couple quick curling games Friday night and another Saturday morning. Then they are off for some golf at Windermere Valley Golf Course with a best shot scramble format. The event finishes with a dinner from Windermere Grill and a quick prize award ceremony. Everyone is left with an open Sunday to do with what they wish. This year’s fun is this Friday and Saturday, October 11 and 12. There are lots of skunks in the valley and they are spraying lots of pets. It is something that all pet owners dread. I think the skunks dread it also. What to do about the scent on your pet? I grew up using tomato juice as it is acidic and kind of neutralizes the odour. Lately I have read that a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and dish soap is the most effective. I am not sure what amounts but it is worth a try.

Happy Anniversaries This is an interesting time of year for me. September 19 was my one year anniversary for finishing chemo. That was a big day in my life. One year with my cancer ‘in remission’. October 1 was my 4 year anniversary with Watson the Bassett hound. He has been an incredible addition to my life. A lot of love when I needed it most. Coming up on October 9 is 2 years since I collapsed with kidney failure and October 11 is 2 years of dialysis. Who would have thought? These dates all remind me of how blessed I am to be alive today with an awesome hound as a companion. Living with both kidney failure and bone marrow cancer is quite the adventure. Thanks to those who have and continue to support me.
