October 5-11, 2017 Feed the Valley The Rocky River Grill is again hosting their annual ‘Feed the Valley’ event this Monday, October 9, from 2 to 8 pm. It is fantastic Thanksgiving Feast including turkey, veggies, smashed potatoes, dressing and all the other trimmings that go with it, including dessert. Everyone is invited to attend and it is a free event. This gets a great dinner for all of us who don’t have time or money to afford our own. It is good. It is a Food Bank fundraiser though, so if you can afford it, please bring nonperishable food items or cash to donate to the Food Bank. That will help so many folks in the valley through the next few months. Thanks.

Volume 15 Issue 40 It is a timeless, classic, family movie that has always received great reviews. It is showing at the Lake Windermere Alliance Church on Friday, October 13 at 7 pm. Admission is by donation as a fundraiser for a mission group to travel to Mexico to help build a family home.

Bowling Leagues The Valley Alley is gearing up for the fall and winter bowling season. They are still looking for teams for the Tuesday and Wednesday mixed leagues. They also have room for individuals in all the leagues. Joining a bowling league is a great way to meet people while having lots of fun. It gets you out of the house every week for a fun, social experience. Give them a call at 250342-2695 for more information.

Saturday Night UFC

I really sucked at math in school. My three most dreaded words were ‘pop quiz’.

This Saturday, October 7, get down to the Copper City Saloon at the Invermere Inn for anther UFC Fight Night. Who will be the world flyweight champion? Find out this weekend. The fights begin at 7 pm. The place fills up pretty quickly on fight nights so make sure you are in time to get a seat.

Family Movie Event Check out ‘Pollyanna’. It is a 1960 Disney movie about a young girl who is an amazing optimist. The term ‘pollyanna’ is an excessively optimistic person.

Happy Thanksgiving. I wish you all warm thoughts of the many things to be thankful for. I have tried to list some of my thanks through the paper but there are far too many to include them all. This weekend is when people try to be more conscious of what they are thankful for. We all have a lot of blessings but we often tend to lose sight of them. Sometimes we focus on how our neighbours have more. The problem with comparing to others is that we can always find someone with more or better stuff. Instead, celebrate what you do have. And share it with those who have less. A great way to realize your blessings is to help someone else. And then, to turn every day into ‘Thanksgiving’ day. To wake every day and actually see some of the great things around us. To celebrate our life each day. Do you wake up and say, “Good morning, God,” or do you wake up and say, “Good God, morning.”?

A couple weeks back I was wagging on about how you humans should be living more like us dogs. You know, love, healthy eating, stretching, drink water, blah, blah. Well I want to add a couple more wonderful ways that I like to live my life. I like to play. With a person, another dog or a cat, it doesn’t matter. Having fun is fun and when I am playing, I like to go all out. My day is much better with some fun in it. Which is why I also like to rest. If I am out there running around, I am pretty happy to hit the dog bed for a solid nap. Rest is important so make sure you get enough. But most importantly, I look forward to every moment. I think that every time Rob stands up, something good is going to happen so I follow him to make sure. Definitely, every time we head out that door, something good is going to happen. A walk, a ride, a visit, a bathroom break, it’s all good. I can’t wait to see what is coming next. Wouldn’t that be a great way for everyone to live? Just looking forward to the next moment, no matter what it may bring.

What Year Was It? The St. Lawrence Seaway opened, the first McDonalds opened, Disneyland in California opened and the first Guinness Book of World Records was published. ‘In God We Trust’ was added to U.S. currency, the Henri Richard riot happened in Montreal, the Mickey Mouse Club and Gunsmoke debuted on TV and James Dean died in a car accident. What year was it? See page 9.

The ‘Link to Rink’ tournament brings the two sports together for a really fun weekend. Entrants play a couple quick curling games Friday night and another Saturday morning. Then they are off for some golf at Windermere Valley Golf Course with a best shot scramble format. The event finishes with a dinner from Annie’s Grill and a quick prize award ceremony. Everyone is left with an open Sunday to do with what they wish. This year’s fun is on Friday and Saturday, October 13 and 14. Two Years Ago I will try to reprint this article every year. It definitely brings back a few memories. ‘Welcome Watson’ Basically, The Valley Peak is all about informing you about things happening in the valley. Especially the good things. But it is also full of personal thoughts and information from my own little life. So welcome to Watson, my new furry friend. Watson is an 8 year-old Basset hound that was surrendered to a shelter in Creston by a loving family who came across very hard times. They lost their house and had to go to an apartment. Watson has taken a few days to settle in to his new digs but he is cheerfully relaxing as I write this. He shall become a regular columnist for The Valley Peak beginning next week.

I was lucky enough to attend the ‘Soup and Bun’ luncheon in Edgewater last Friday. The seniors host it at the Legion. It was delicious. A bowl of homemade soup (2 choices), a fresh homemade bun or biscuit (I loved the cornbread), juice, coffee or tea, and a huge selection of delicious homemade desserts. All for only $6 on the last Friday of every month. The Edgewater Seniors donated $4,000 towards the improvements at Frank’s Rink this year. Thanks to all the volunteers and to the folks who come out and enjoy the lunches.

Costume Ideas and More Halloween is here pretty soon. Coming up with a costume can be tricky for all ages. Check out ‘Treasures in the Wind’ on Government St. in Windermere. They have a bunch of Halloween costumes, decorations and accessories. You will see lots of other great things while you are there.

Sing & Celebrate This Sunday, October 8, join the folks at the Lake Windermere Alliance Church for ‘Sing & Celebrate’. They get together at 7 pm to sing a few classic hymns and enjoy some great desserts prepared by the ladies.

What did Batman say to Robin just before they got into the Batmobile? “Robin, get into the Batmobile.”

Awesome Website If you are away from the valley or if you can’t find a paper copy of The Valley Peak, just go to the website, www.valleypeak.ca. You will find the current and past issues posted there as well as information regarding ad costs and more. Thanks to Eggplant Studios for building and managing it for me. Keep in touch with the valley when you are abroad. And I should say ‘Hi’ to all my faithful online readers. Thanks for enjoying The Valley Peak.

Winter Tires We are into the month of October. That means that there are restrictions on automobile tires on most highways in British Columbia. Your tires must be certified for winter driving. That means they should have a snowflake or an M/S on them indicating that they are good for winter road conditions.

Falling Into Autumn What a quick switch of seasons we are experiencing. The leaves are changing and falling quickly this year. The Farmer’s Almanac called for a hot, dry summer and is suggesting a long, cold, snowy winter. It is so beautiful when you see all the amazing colours offered up by the trees and shrubs at this time of year. So many shades of yellow, orange, red, green and more. Thank you nature.

Coffee Works One of my favourite stops in the valley is at Kootenay Coffee Works. They have fantastic food, whether it is a lunch special (prime rib on Thursdays), a bowl of homemade soup, a sandwich or some delicious baking. They also have a great choice of specialty coffees and teas to help us get through our days. They are next to Bavin Glass at the crossroads.

Thanks To all the volunteers who make things happen in this valley. From Board members to ticket-takers, emcees to clean-up crews, everyone makes a difference. There are too many to list, but thanks to all the non-profit societies, service clubs, fire & rescue people, etc., that just give your time. If you would like to highlight your group, or an outstanding contribution from a volunteer, email rob@valleypeak.ca and I shall offer up a ‘shout-out’ for you.

Valley Time Being involved in helping organize a few events here in the valley is an interesting adventure. You really have to have faith that folks are going to show up as seldom

does anyone buy advance tickets. Not a big issue with some events but if you are feeding folks, it is a bit tricky predicting how much food to order. Blessed are those events that sell out in advance. I am as guilty as anyone for not buying tickets ahead of time. It is fun to try and live a ‘fluid’ lifestyle with very few locked-in commitments, just letting the wind take me where it will. Anyway, if you know you want to attend an event, help the organizers out by purchasing your tickets ahead of time.
