September 10-16, 2020 Better Beef I have been introduced to Bugaboo Beef up at the Agri Park Farmer’s Market on Wednesday evenings. I tried a couple of steaks and some ground beef patties early in the summer and they were all amazing. I have been back a couple of times now. You can get their locally raised, grain fed, Angus beef at the market for 2 more weeks (until September 16), or you can get it directly from the ranch. It is available yearround in variety and family-sized packs. Call 250-342-1607 or email them at bugabooranch@gmail.com.

Scarecrow Tour

I accidently sprayed deodorant into my mouth. Now when I speak I have this weird Axe scent.

October brings the season for scarecrows. This Year, the District of Invermere is introducing the Great Scarecrow Competition & Tour. Everyone, including residents, businesses and community groups are invited to build and display a scarecrow on their property. Enter your scarecrow online at eventbrite.ca (cost is $10). People can drive around town and view the scarecrows and pick their favourites online October 9-16. The winner takes home all the proceeds. Sounds like fun to me.

School is In It is happening. The kids are back in school. Again, I am not sure how that looks for the schools or the kids but I am sure that lots of folks are happy. From my end, I live near an elementary school so I have to be very careful as I am driving around my area. Please do the same out there. Kids are pretty distracted when they are with their friends and may not be fully aware of traffic so it is up to us to keep them safe.

Robservations “Make your smile change the world. Don’t let the world change your smile”. That is a very powerful quote. I am not sure who said it but I like the way they think. A simple smile can change the way so many people feel. It is incredible. I know this because I know how I feel better when someone smiles at me. Much better. So I strive to smile at folks as much as possible and I love when they smile back. Sometimes it may be tricky if they have a mask on but I can usually see the warmth come to their eyes. Opposite to that is the folks with fear in their eyes. Sadly many people are so scared of what is happening out there that they are assuming that everyone and everything around them will give them a deadly virus. I don’t know how to react to someone who is scared of me. It is strange. Loving people and loving life is the natural lifestyle for humans. We start out loving everything and everyone but we soon learn about hate, fear, judgement and other negative traits. It is strange and sad. So use your smile and share some positive energy whenever possible. You know it feels good to make another person smile so strive to feel good every day.

Watson’s Waddle We have a lot people and places that are so welcoming that it is amazing while at the same time we have other spots that do not want dogs around at all. Humans are definitely about being in control of everything, including other species (that’s me, a dog). I love water and it is tough that the best water places are ‘human only’ (beaches). I understand that some dogs do not clean up after themselves, but I do (or have someone do it for me). A shout out of thanks to all the responsible dogs that have well-trained owners. But when we walk the beach on a Sunday morning, there is so much human garbage that it is ridiculous. Yet it is me that is not allowed. Oh well. As for the amazing stuff, many businesses allow dogs to come in and some even offer dog treats. Canadian Tire, RONA and Home Hardware come to mind quickly. But I think the best of all is the Rocky River Grill. They actually allow dogs to come into the outdoor dining patio area. Rob and Tracy went for breakfast and I was able to join them. The wonderful server even brought me a bowl of water. Check it out dogs.

What Year Was It? Cigarette ads were banned from television, Neil Young returned to Canada for his first concert since reaching stardom, the Harlem Globetrotters lost to the NJ Reds, ending a 2,495 game winning streak and ‘Patton’ won best picture. Alan Shepard hit the first golf shot on the moon, Walt Disney World opened in Florida, Bobby Orr signed the first ever milliondollar contract and ‘All in the Family’ premiered on TV with the first ever ‘toilet flush’ on TV. What year was it? See page 7.

I am a regular for bloodwork at the lab in the Invermere hospital. I go monthly for my lack of kidney function and my dialysis to make sure toxins are under control. The team in the lab here are fabulous. They treat me well and do a good job of hitting the right spot. Every three months I go for bloodwork for my cancer and then meet with my oncologist or cancer specialist. I did the bloodwork the other day and now wait for results and my appointment. This is always a stressful couple of weeks waiting to get the final results of the cancer. Results have been incredible so far so I am hoping to just hear the same old from the doctor this time.

Beautiful Flowers I am impressed every summer with the beautiful flower beds around the District of Invermere. It really adds to the attractions of the valley. I also love the flower-picking day that comes up at the end of the season every year. That happens next Friday, September 18. We are all allowed to pick annual flowers from the beds. No digging please. Leave all roots, grasses and perennials and of course, don’t be a flower hog. Leave a few for me. Anyways, thanks to the District of Invermere for all of this.

Well I am lying in my dialysis bed for the morning and as I look out the window I am surprised to see some snow on the mountaintops. It looks so beautiful and peaceful. I am sure that some people are pretty happy about it. Skiers and sledders come to mind, as well as hunters. I am sure we are quite a ways away from snow down here in the valley but it is time to start thinking about it.

Hunting Season It is that time of year folks. Bow hunting season has begun and the hunters are out and about in the mountains. Soon regular season will begin and even more folks will be trying to put meat on their tables and in their freezers. I recall hunting in my earlier years with my father. I never shot a big game animal as I did not quite have the heart for it but I sure loved the meat. Moose meat is delicious. Good luck to all the hunters and please stay safe.

Strong Opinions Obviously not everyone agrees with my thoughts on the corona virus. The information we see in mainstream media is very different from what I believe (and many others-thanks folks). Lots of new information is coming out regarding false positives, over-counting and more as audits are being done but that will not hit the news. It does not match their narrative. Anyways, my recent opinions did bother at least one reader. They did not think that I am very well-informed. Obviously I am not very well informed with the same information they have. It was interesting reading a different viewpoint. It was a bit entertaining being told I am a self-centered jerk and a yellow pseudo journalist. Some folks are passionate about their beliefs. I shall stick with what I see with my own eyes. A lot of fear over very few deaths. If folks want to isolate or protect themselves, that is fine but they can’t really expect everyone to respond in the same way.

But how about a billion dollars? That is a thousand millions. Most of our brains cannot grasp that concept. That is one of the reasons Canadians allow our government to waste/misplace/give away/steal many billions of dollars and the citizens just keep paying higher taxes. It is a bad system.

Where Watson Was Thanks to Kootenay Kritters for this and most of the Watson photos these days. The page 6 photo is a gorgeous shot of Watson at Munn Lake, near Wilmer.

Humbling I was pretty happy with my gardening adventures this year. I thought I did well with my veggies on my deck and in my raised bed. But compared to my landlord’s garden or my neighbours and other friends, mine was pretty boring. Hats off to all the folks who put in the time and effort to manage a garden. Those who do canning and pickling for food all year round are even more impressive.

Paddleboard Heroes Thanks to Roxanne and Patrick (I think-I can be bad with names) for returning the paddleboard they found.

Panic Attacks I have to say that panic attacks are not a very pleasant experience. I tend to get them on occasion during dialysis. It is related to the feeling of being trapped. It is a bizarre sensation as my whole body begins to feel stressed. I get restless legs and feet, begin to feel hot and start sweating and my brain starts to elevate in stress levels. It is a weird sensation and I really dislike it.

Freebie I usually charge for window cleaning. But this one is on the house.

Unfathomable Numbers Unfortunately, we are caught in a system where money determines our value. For me, a thousand dollars is an incredible amount of money and requires quite a bit of work to produce that. I cannot imagine having a million dollars. That is a thousand thousands. It is reachable by very few in our society. Many have worked very hard and very smart to get there.
