Great Youth Program The Columbia Valley Youth Network is running some great youth events in each community as they gather much-needed input from local youth regarding their needs around the valley. Youth (ages 12 to 18) are invited to get together at fun spots in each community for free food and activities and to voice their opinions. Check the ad on page 4 for the time and place in your community.

Steak Sandwich I love steak sandwiches. Actually I love most food but steak sandwiches get a very high rating. This week’s Friday dinner at the Invermere Legion is a steak sandwich, including garlic toast, baked potato, Caesar salad, dessert and a beverage. It is happening at 6:30 pm on September 15. The Legion dinners are always great meals and very well-attended. Plus you can get in on the 50/50 and meat draws while you are there.

This has been a crazy, busy summer for me. I have been working with B.C. Wildfire Service as a Fire Warden and it has been non-stop with that job. That has made it a bit tricky to get The Valley Peak done each week. In my own self-judging mind, it has really affected the quality of The Valley Peak. I might sneak in a ‘copy and paste’ from a past year for an article (especially with jokes). Sometimes that leads to the occasional error. But strangely enough, I have been getting more positive comments than ever before regarding the paper. Readers enjoy the positive energy, a few jokes, information about upcoming events, puzzles and more. ‘Watson’s Waddle’ is a huge hit. He is like a little celebrity in the valley. It is quite entertaining as he milks people for attention and love when we are out and about. Anyways, this is actually one of the busiest issues ever for advertising and upcoming events. The Valley Peak is a great way to reach the valley and an affordable, effective place to advertise. Thanks to all my clients and readers.
Full Moon The moon is full of mysterious landscapes and craters. On the bright side, you can actually see them.
Spilli Station Situation It has been a great summer for the Spill Station Cafe in Spillimacheen (obviously). They have a great menu and have been busy all summer. Now that fall has arrived, they are changing their hours for a couple of weeks before closing for the season. They will be open 10 am to 2 pm Wednesday to Friday and 10 am to 7 pm on Saturday and Sundays. Their final day for the season will be Saturday, September 30 when they will be closing at 3 pm. Thanks to everyone who has been supporting the Spilli Station Café this summer.

Many folks believe that a dog is a reflection of God (spellingwise it is). Dogs are all about love. We dogs need to receive love and we need to give unconditional love. We have very deep eyes that can make any human feel greatly loved. Many humans wonder why such a great companion for a human has such a shorter life span. It would be so much easier to just hangout as lifelong companions. It is a good gig for us, the dogs, as you are there for our whole lives, but we are pretty temporary in yours. A person can have several pets pass through their lives and at the time, each dog seems like it is the best, most-loving dog you will ever know. But then it’s gone and your heart is broken. But it mends, just never completely. I think it is just to help you folks understand what love is all about. Love is a living thing. It is a spirit within us that returns again and again, with huge bouts of sadness and grief mixed in. So thanks to all you open-hearted people out there. The risk that you take when you fall in love with a dog is well worth it. You know that your life will be overflowing with love. You will have many very happy moments and one really sad one. It is good for your heart.
Figure It Out A lot of people really have a tough time counting calories. They have the figures to prove it.

Repair Café There is a new program in town. The Columbia Valley Makerspace Society is a group that wants to help people learn to repair their broken items rather than discarding and purchasing new. We all have favourite items that are broken and wish that we could afford to have repaired. As it turns out, sometimes it is a very simple fix that we are capable of doing ourselves. On Saturday, September 23, bring your broken item to the Invermere Legion between 1 pm and 6 pm and they will help you take a look at it and fix it. This is a free event and includes free coffee and treats.

Inside ICAN Teego here, reporting for ICAN Rescue and Adoption Facility. As we’re in the midst of tackling a trap, neuter, release project at Skookumchuk, we are in dire need of barn homes to relocate the fixed feral cats. When we trap kittens or younger cats we have the opportunity to tame them to become house cats, but for older cats that have been living outside for years, they need the space to roam. If you have the space and the compassion to provide one or more of these ferals homes we’d love to hear from you! A little food and shelter goes a long way for a feral cat. Clear Skies What an incredible treat it was on Sunday to wake up to beautiful blue skies and fresh air. The bit of wind and rain on Saturday evening and overnight really cleared up our air. It was quite different getting in the house later to find it smelling smoky from the days of low smoke in the air. Today, Monday, things are starting to try to revert to the smoke. When I go outside I smell the smoke again and I can see a bit of it coming out of the mountains. Hopefully some substantial rain will change all of this soon.

The ‘What’s Up Down the Valley’ calendar on page 12 can be a very handy guide to activities in the valley. Many folks check it each week. So it is important to keep it updated with accurate information. Please let me know if your program is done for the season so it can be removed from the calendar. The Columbia Valley Rockies are into their regular season now. They came up against a couple tough teams to start the season, losing in Kimberley and also home to the Castlegar Rebels. They are on the road for a couple games and return to host the Kimberley Dynamiters on Friday, September 22. Good luck to our guys. Attendance was great on the weekend. Nearly 350 fans showed up to cheer on junior hockey in our community. The 50/50 draw was $400 (congratulations to the winner). I hope to see lots of folks there on the 22nd.
Takes Me Back I love the way different things can trigger different thoughts and memories. For some strange reason, I bought some ‘Cream of Wheat’ breakfast cereal last month. It just caught my eye. I don’t think I have ever bought it before. But it was a huge part of my childhood. Dad loved different porridges and this was one of them. The taste and texture of this warm cereal brings me some warm memories of mornings with Dad.

Red Fish It is that time of year. The kokanee (landlocked salmon) are running up the streams for reproduction. I love how they have turned red so I can actually see them in the water. The other day I came across a huge sand bar area that many of them are using for reproduction. I was able to watch them stir up the gravel with their tails and attempt to pair up into couples. It was interesting. It actually reminded me of watching large salmon on the island in one of my university biology classes. It seemed much more interesting this week watching them dance in the stream.

I love sweets. It is definitely a flaw of mine. Fortunately, Margot at ‘Gimme Some Sugar’ likes to help me with my flaws. She makes delectable sweets. With lots of chocolate, my favourite. She makes incredible sponge toffee and you can get it with or without chocolate coating. Her chocolate-covered caramels are pretty fantastic also. You can find a variety of her products in AG Valley Foods, Big Horn Café, Family Pantries, The Hitching Post (Kimberley), Copper Point Resort, the Base Camp, Canal Flats RV and Fairmont Pizza and Ice Cream Parlour. You can call 250-341-5185 to put in a custom order for gifts, social events or just a personal treat.
Fore! Windermere Valley Golf Course is offering up very affordable golf this month. For only $22, from Sunday to Wednesday, after 2 pm, you can play 18 holes. That is a great bargain. The course is in wonderful shape. It is a nice course that is family-friendly yet full of challenges. The staff are all really nice folks. Call 250-3423004 to book a tee time.

Hunting Supplies
Clean Coupons
Canadian Tire has added a complete firearms section to the store in Invermere. They have an expanded hunting department that should be able to suit anyone’s needs. Guns, scopes, ammo, clothing, footwear, calls, decoys, camping gear, accessories and more. Stop in and check it out.
I do a little bit of bartering with The Valley Peak and some advertising clients. Often I will take gift certificates to restaurants so I can experience their businesses or share with friends. Sometimes I give them to folks who have been helping me along the way. And other times, I just forget them in my pocket and put them in the laundry. A couple days later I will wonder where that coupon went and have a flashback. I will find a bunch of shredded paper in my pants pocket. It is sad that my brain lets me down and costs me cash on occasion. I guess it could be worse.
Sharp Sting I have had a pretty good year avoiding bees and hornets until last Sunday. I was out as a Fire Warden and turned my head to feel a sharp sting on my jaw. There was a hornet on my collar and looking in the mirror, I could see it dangling from my chin by its stinger. Ouch! I had forgotten how sharp that sting can be. It was getting pretty close to my airways so I really had to fight off panic. It would suck to have a reaction way out in the middle of nowhere. Obviously I did survive, haha. I found an old penny and placed it on the wound, They say the copper draws out some of the poison. A bit of ice helped with the pain and swelling. Hopefully I have no repeats.
Best Motto At a plastic surgery clinic: We love to see new faces in here.

Stop into their showroom to learn more about their beautiful, efficient, cost-saving stoves, fireplaces and other heating options.
Soup and a Bun On the last Friday of every month, at noon, the seniors in Edgewater host a ‘Soup and a Bun’ luncheon at the Legion. The cost is only $6 and that includes a choice of home -made soups, a fresh bun or biscuit, dessert and a beverage. It is a great deal for a tasty meal. I always enjoy the drive out and the delicious food.
Thanks
